    Magura Says the Race Pro Is the Most Powerful Brake It Has Ever Developed
    Today, the German brake specialists at Magura are introducing what they are calling the most powerful brake they have ever developed: the Race Pro. Designed with massive stopping power and uncompromising control in mind, the new Race Pro is aimed squarely at serious mountain bike riders. Magura also breaks its own mold and aims to quiet the haters and skeptics by manufacturing the Race Pro brakes in premium aluminum.Magura Race Pro DetailsMagura makes it very clear that the goal with the Race Pro was to create its most powerful brake to date. With a name like Race Pro, its clear that its aimed at racers, particularly gravity riders, but is intended for use by all riders seeking peak braking performance. They say the new brakes offer full power and aggressive bite, but with a gentle touch. This means that riders get extreme braking power when they need it most, with smooth actuation and low hand force to keep arm pump at bay.Magura says that efficiency is the key to this new brake. Our legendary radial master piston, actuated towards the handlebar, and a low-friction anodized piston chamber convert every bit of finger force into braking power. Thats paired with a ball-bearing lever pivot to ensure smooth operation. Magura says theyve taken this design a step further than on the Gustav brakes with a new threaded Easy Link valve.     Shimano Makes a Major Change to their Road Pedals with SPD-SLR: New Cleats, Pedals, Even Shoes
    Shimano has spent more than two decades changing almost everything around its road pedals without seriously messing with the SPD-SL cleat. That changes with SPD-SLR.The new system brings a redesigned road cleat, new Dura-Ace and Ultegra pedals, and two new road shoes built around a lower shoe-to-pedal connection. Shimano says the complete package cuts stack height by 2.3mm, clips in faster, drops cleat weight, and creates a stiffer connection between the rider and bike. Just dont try to ride your teammates bike with the new SPD-SLR pedals and you have the SPD-SL cleatsask Mathieu Van Der Pol.The pedals are interesting, but nothing wildly different; same goes for the S-PHYRE shoes, but the cleat is where the story is.(All Photos/Shimano)First Change To SPD-SL Since 2003Shimano introduced SPD-SL in 2003. Shimano has updated pedal bodies, bearings, shoes, and even cleat float options. The basic three-bolt cleat-to-pedal interface has remained remarkably familiar. SPD-SLR is the first fundamental rethink of that connection in more than two decades.And, thanks to a tragic attempted bike change at 2026 Paris-Roubaix, we already know why compatibility matters.SPD-SLR: Same Idea Different ConnectionShimano is treating SPD-SLR as a complete system, not a new pedal with a slightly different body. If 2026 had a tagline for bike innovation, it would be think of it as a full system.Shimano developed the shoe, cleat, and pedal together, focusing on reducing movement between the three contact points. The biggest number is a 2.3 mm lower stack height, bringing the foot closer to the pedal axle.Why does stack height matter so much? A couple of millimeters doesnt sound dramatic until you remember this contact point moves thousands of times over a ride. A lower stack can reduce leverage between the foot and pedal axle, give a rounder pedal stroke, and provide a more stable platform under hard efforts.The cleat now sits tighter against the pedal. Shimano claims there is zero gap between the two surfaces as part of the new systems improved stability and power transfer. That also means a better clip-in experience.SPD-SLR = Faster Clip-InShimano has widened the catch area and reduced the engagement angle from 15.5 degrees on SPD-SL to 10.5 degrees on SPD-SLR. The smaller angle means less pedal rotation is needed before the cleat finds and engages the pedal.The redesigned cleats are also considerably lighter. Shimano says SPD-SLR cleats weigh up to 25% less than their SPD-SL equivalents. Example: The SM-SH12 cleat set weighs 71g compared with 55g for the new CL-SL120. But weve yet to actually lay hands on the new cleats.Sixteen grams will not transform a bike. However, getting lighter while reducing stack and changing the engagement mechanism is a nice bonus.Four SPD-SLR CleatsShimano is also expanding the road cleat family from the familiar red, blue, and yellow options to four SPD-SLR versions.Red (CL-SL100) is the fixed option with zero float.Yellow (CL-SL110) is the higher-float option, with Shimano showing 3 degrees of rotational movement.Blue (CL-SL120) reduces that to 1 degree for riders who want some movement without much lateral wandering.Gray (CL-SL130), which is a little different.The gray cleat is intended to help riders use SPD-SLR pedals with most non-Shimano three-bolt road shoes. It provides more adjustment range for shoes with fixed cleat mounting positions, but it does not provide the same low-stack or weight benefits as the three core SPD-SLR cleats. Basically, if you want the low stack and low weight, youre gonna have to get on the Shimano shoes. But lets move on to the pedals.New Dura-Ace PD-R9300 PedalsSPD-SLR makes its top-level debut on the new Dura-Ace PD-R9300.Visually, it still looks like a Shimano road pedal. The changes are in the body shape, contact surface, bearings, and the new cleat interface. The pedal uses an injection-molded carbon-composite body with an extra-wide platform and an integrated stainless steel contact plate. Shimano says the plate improves engagement and increases stiffness at the shoe-pedal interface.The axle runs on wider bearings intended to spread load more evenly. Shimano claims an 11% increase in stiffness compared with the PD-R8200. Shimano now heat-treats the axle and has revised the bearing surfaces. In this new process, Shimano claims 53% less rotational resistance than the PD-R8200.Shimanos goal was to reduce losses through the entire connection from shoe to axle. It sounds pretty convincing, but thats only if youre getting on the shoes too.Ultegra Gets SPD-SLR TooThe new Ultegra PD-R8200 uses the same SPD-SLR architecture.It gets a lightweight resin body, stainless steel contact plate, and the same engagement characteristics as Dura-Ace. Riders will trade some of the top-tier refinement for a slightly lower price point, but with the same stack height as the Dura-Ace setup.New S-PHYRE RC910Shimano also built a new flagship shoe around the lower SPD-SLR interface, and its pretty integral to the whole system.The S-PHYRE SH-RC910 gets a new Carbon Hollow Core midsole, carbon-fiber heel cup with Anti-Twist Stabilization, revised surround-wrapping upper, additional ventilation, and DYNALAST 2.0. The SPD-SLR mounting platform should give riders more cleat adjustment range.Shimano says the Carbon Hollow Core construction aims for maximum pedaling efficiency while keeping weight down. The carbon heel structure is meant to keep the back of the foot from twisting under hard efforts. The previous S-PHYRE used nylon heel retention and felt OK to us, but I wouldnt mind carbon if its comfortable.The lower cleat interface is part of the shoe, not something Shimano popped underneath an existing RC903.RC810 Brings the Platform Down a LevelThe new SH-RC810 brings much of the same thinking to the tier below S-PHYRE.It uses dual BOA Li2 dials, DYNALAST 2.0, an external heel stabilizer, replaceable heel pads, and a hollow-channel carbon midsole with ventilation and water drainage.Most importantly, it gets the new SPD-SLR mounting platform and expanded cleat adjustment.That gives Shimano two shoes (at different price points) built around the new interface from launch, while still letting riders with existing Shimano three-bolt road shoes use the new cleats.Where From Here?For a company that rarely changes standards without a reason, SPD-SLR is a notable move. Shimano has decided there were enough gains left between the sole of the shoe and the pedal axle to justify walking away from more than 20 years of road-pedal compatibility.After watching Van der Poel discover that fact in the middle of Arenberg, nobody can say Shimano changed it quietly. But well save our comments until we can experience this new system for ourselves. Until then, remember to check the neutral service bikes next year.

    Ergons New GMA and GMS MTB Grips Provide Ergo Options
    Riding comfort is all about your contact points, and Ergon has been striving for years to make grips that keep our hands and wrists as happy as possible. Ergon says hand discomfort, numbness, and fatigue are common complaints from trail riders, eMTB riders, and bikepackers. They seek to provide riders with some relief with their new ergonomic grip models called the GMA and the GMS. These new grips replace the brands GA2 and GA3 models, and both include design updates. The GMA is the lightly ergo-shaped, all-mountain MTB grip, and the GMS features a mini-wing for maximum wrist support.Both new grips are made from Ergons GravityControl rubber compound; both include CNC-machined aluminum clamps with laser-etched indices for convenient positioning, and there are two size options for each new model as well.The main update for both models is the new Smart Texture Rhythm surface. This is an engineered pattern that offers varying surface break densities across the grip. The design provides zone-specific damping, plus more comfort and better vibration absorption, particularly through long rides or on rough terrain. Of course, Ergon made sure the grips didnt lose their feedback and control in exchange for comfort.Ergon GMA Grip:The new GMA grip is intended for all-mountain riding, designed to perform well during climbs or descents. The grips tapered shape narrows around the inside of the hand to offer precise thumb and palm feel, and widens at the outer ends to add cushioning and enhance comfort.A new thumb recess and outer stop help improve handlebar control and help enhance the grips ergonomics. The new GMA provides a more uniform contact area, reduces pressure spikes, and supports the hands in bumpy terrain. Beyond all this, Ergon made sure the grips still allow easy access to shifters and dropper post levers.This grip boasts a gravity-inspired underside texture based upon Ergons GDH grip. It features raised ribs and finger guides that improve grip and support proper hand position. On top is the new Smart Texture Rhythm surface.The new GMA grip is available in standard and FAT sizes. At 34mm, the FAT version is 2mm thicker in diameter and offers more cushioning (ideal for bikepacking) or a better fit for bigger hands. The GMA grip is available in eight different colors, while the FAT version comes in four colors. MSRP is 29.95 ($34.55 USD).Ergon GMS Grip:Specifically aiming to relieve finger numbness and hand/wrist pain, the new GMS grip features Ergons ergonomic mini-wing shape. Round grips can concentrate pressure on the palm, irritating nerves and compressing blood vessels. The GMS mini-wing distributes pressure across the palm and supports the wrists better.The new grip has been redesigned to offer a more natural profile that conforms to the hands. It now features a smoother, trapezoidal shape with a more consistent outer contour. It also employs a curved profile sloping towards the outside ends to better match the shape of riders hands versus the previous GA3 grip.The GMS grip features Ergons new Smart Texture Rhythm surface.     First Rides: Segway MUXI Pro Compact Cargo e-Bike is Feature-Packed and Easy to Ride
    Since its establishment in 1999, the Segway brand has been synonymous with its self-balancing Personal Transporter. In the 26 years since, the self-proclaimed micromobility leader has expanded its product range to include electric scooters, go-karts, off-road vehicles, robotic lawn mowers, and e-bikes. The latest addition to its e-bike lineup is the MUXI Pro, an upgraded version of its MUXI compact cargo/utility model.To create the Pro version, Segway took the standard MUXI and upgraded it with a 70mm suspension fork, an auto-shifting 9-speed drivetrain, Class 3 capability, turn signals, and fenders included. It maintains compatibility with all of Segways aftermarket accessories plus all the features of its tech-forward Intelligent Ride System. The MUXI Pro comes in two new colorways and retails for $1,999.99 USD.Segway sent me a MUXI Pro to try out before launch, and it arrived a couple of weeks ago. Ive had the chance to familiarize myself with the bike and its tech, and have taken it for a few rides around the neighborhood. Ill share my initial impressions at the end of this article.Segway MUXI Pro DetailsThe MUXI Pro is built around the same frame as the standard MUXI. This compact cargo/utility e-bike has a distinctive, swooping double-tube design and holds the battery very low and centered in the frame for stability and a natural handling feel. The frame also has low step- and stand-over height, making it easy to mount and dismount. It has a claimed user height range of 48 to 60, and the riding position is intended to be upright for rider comfort.The MUXI Pro has a unique double-tube frame, low battery placement, and low step-over height.The MUXI models are designed to be short-tail, or compact, cargo bikes, and the Pro comes equipped with a sturdy rear rack rated for up to 121 pounds. It has a total payload capacity of 418 pounds and a max rider weight of 265 pounds. Segway offers a range of aftermarket accessories for the MUXI, including a passenger kit, middle basket, front basket, an automatic dropper post, rearview radar, and a rearview mirror to outfit it for your needs.The MUXI Pro comes with a suspension fork, lights, and fenders, and is compatible with various aftermarket accessories to carry cargo.MUXI Pro UpgradesLike the regular MUXI, the Pro rolls on 20 wheels with 3 multi-surface tires. Unlike the regular MUXI, however, the Pro features a 70mm suspension fork to add comfort and control. It is equipped with front and rear lights to see and be seen, and the Pro adds turn signals so you can let motorists and other riders know where youre intending to go. The Pro also comes with front and rear fenders as standard equipment.Unlike the single-speed MUXI, the MUXI Pro features an electric auto-shifting 9-speed drivetrain. The MUXI is a class-selectable bike, but the Pro adds Class 3 to the list (where legal) and the ability to reach pedal-assisted speeds of up to 28 mph.The MUXI Pro gets an auto-shifting 9-speed drivetrain and can be configured as a Class 3 e-bike (up to 28 mph with pedal assist).Motor and BatteryThe MUXI Pro has a 750W rear hub motor that puts out up to 80Nm of torque. It has numerous pedal-assist levels to suit your needs, and as mentioned above, riders can choose between Class 1, 2, and 3 through the Segway app.According to Segway, the advanced motor includes several advanced features: Hill Descent Control provides controlled descending and reduced brake wear while giving back to the battery with Regenerative Braking for improved efficiency. Hill-Start Assist prevents rollbacks, and the Traction Control System (TCS) detects wheelspin to help maintain MUXI Pros composure on slick or loose surfaces.The bike is powered by a removable 48V / 716 Wh battery, which gives it a claimed range of up to 73 miles. A full charge reportedly takes 5.5 hours. The battery and display are IPX7 rated for water resistance, and the battery and electronics are certified to UL 2271 and 2849 safety standards.Color display.The MUXI Pro comes with a multi-function color display centered on the handlebar over the stem that shows ride metrics and other features, including navigation. (photo/Jeremy Benson)As mentioned at the top of this article, my MUXI Pro test bike arrived two weeks ago, and Ive taken it out for a couple of spins so far. My experience using the bike is still quite limited, so these are just my first impressions of this compact cargo e-bike.My MUXI Pro arrived fully assembled, so I cant speak to the assembly process if you have one delivered to your home. The first thing you need to do is download the Segway Mobility app; then, when you turn the bike on, a scannable QR code pops up on the display so you can quickly and easily pair with it. Once paired, you can customize numerous settings, including security features like a passcode, Apple Find My, AirLock, and so on. The post is still a bit short, but totally rideable. (photo/Jeremy Benson)The MUXI Pro has a relatively large fit range, but the stock seatpost was nowhere near long enough for me. Im 60 with a 34-ish inseam, and the post is probably two inches too short for my legs. Its a great fit for my 57 wife, and Id say riders probably 510 and under will likely fit with the stock post. As a performance-oriented cyclist, I prefer proper leg extension while pedaling, even if Im on an e-bike. So, I swapped the stock post for a significantly longer one I have on hand, but its still a tad short. Im currently in the process of sourcing an even longer one for additional testing.Now, with a seatpost thats close to the proper length, Ive taken the MUXI for a few rips around the neighborhood and on some errand runs. So far, Ive found it to be quite comfortable, both in terms of the seated pedaling position and the ride quality. Its very stable and super smooth; I think mostly due to the low placement of the battery. The suspension fork takes the edge off bumps and imperfect road surfaces, and the 3 wide tires provide a little extra cushion and predictable grip. Unlike some 20 wheeled bikes Ive ridden, the MUXI Pro doesnt feel twitchy or nervous; instead, it feels calm and predictable.Lots of security and tracking features.(photo/Jeremy Benson)Its also an incredibly easy bike to get on and ride. If you have a security passcode set up, you need to enter it when you turn it on. After that, you just choose the pedal assist level and go. While youre riding, the auto-shifting drivetrain changes on the fly, downshifting when you slow down and upshifting when your speed and cadence increase. The rider can select the desired cadence for the auto-shifts, so you can adjust the ride feel to your preferences or situation. Overall, it works pretty darn well, and Im surprisingly impressed by its performance.Lots of buttons, but Im quickly getting used to it. (photo/Jeremy Benson)The display is bright and easy to read, and it makes it easy to stay on top of your riding metrics or make adjustments to the bike through the menu. I will say that with two handlebar-mounted controls, there seems like a lot going on at first Im used to a single unit on my other e-bikes. After a couple of rides, however, Ive already gotten pretty used to it, and now Im hitting the correct buttons most of the time On that note, the lights work well for being seen in the daytime and riding in the dark. The front light has an upper cutoff so you dont blind oncoming riders, pedestrians, or motorists, and the separate rear turn signals are a nice touch.Ive also been impressed by the motor. Its relatively quiet, and it has six levels of assistance to choose from. Ive mostly been using it in the mid levels so I can put some of my own power into the pedals. On a couple of occasions, Ive bumped it up to high, and it packs a serious punch, makes hills vanish, and has no problem hitting 28 mph on flat ground (in Class 3 mode). At the same time, the power delivery doesnt feel jumpy or jerky; instead, it has a smooth and refined feel. The MUXI Pros lights work well, and the separate turn signals (orange) are a nice touch. Last night, I rode it six miles to and from the grocery store in mid- to high-assist levels, and used 7% of the battery. On that note, I need to get my hands on some of Segways cargo-carrying accessories to add some utility to this compact cargo e-bike.Beyond the short seatpost, I really dont have any other complaints about the MUXI Pro. Its smooth, comfortable, plenty powerful, and super easy to ride. At $2,000, its not the cheapest bike around, but it seems competitively priced for a fully featured e-bike with this much tech built in. Regardless, Im going to keep on riding it, and Ill report back with a long-term review in due time.

    After 25 Years, BOA is More Invested in Cycling Than Ever with New Helmet Testing Lab
    One of the most interesting developments at BOA recently has nothing to do with shoes. Sure, you can already find a lot of BOA products other than shoes. But in the cycling world, its still probably best known for the BOA Fit System those little dials on your shoes that help you cinch down the perfect fit. BOA has also been working on integrating their Fit System into helmets for almost a decade now, and every step of the way has seen significant improvements. But lately theres been an entirely new development that could have a profound impact on the safety of BOA-equipped helmets. Wanting to better understand the interaction of the fit system with helmet safety tech like MIPS and the helmet as a whole, BOA went all in on testing and built their own test studio in its Human Performance Fit Lab at their headquarters in Denver, Colorado. The testing at Virginia Tech is largely considered the gold standard at this point, so the testing rig replicates their procedure, which requires dropping the helmet on six different locations. The process is repeated with another helmet to understand any variability between models. In addition, drop tests are performed at two different speeds while measuring both linear impact and rotation. BOA has been testing the same helmet with and without MIPS to better understand the difference. Ultimately, they hope that having the ability to prototype and then test in-house will yield the ability to create safer helmets, which may also lead to performance improvements like figuring out ways to provide better retention on the head without overtightening or overheating. While using test dummies allows for repeatable test results, it will be interesting to see how BOA uses their new capabilities to test the effect of things like hair or cycling caps on helmet and rotation mitigation systems performance. Obviously, a lot of BOAs helmet partners will do their own testing and development, but having the facility on site will allow BOA to develop the next evolution of their fit system so they can offer that to partners in the future. One of the most exciting aspects to me is that BOA isnt in the position of trying to sell you a helmet. They simply want to offer a fit system that makes all helmets safer and better performing, and now they have the equipment to take that even further. Real World TestingIve been watching this evolution of the fit system closely for years now, and can personally vouch for the improvements. Initially, many of the BOA-equipped helmets simply didnt work for me. But each successive model was a little better, which brings us to helmets like the recently released Specialized Ambush 3.Not only is the BOA Fit System in the Ambush 3 substantially more comfortable than earlier BOA MTB helmets, but Im also certain it played a big role in preventing serious injury in a recent crash. After a tap of my bar against a tree, I was sent into a high-side crash, only to have a small, stubby tree trunk stop all my forward momentum while leading with my head. Based on the impact, if my helmet had moved even half an inch in that initial part of the crash, one of those stubby branches could have gone into my eye socket instead of the helmet. While Im pretty sure I ended up with a slight concussion, given the circumstances, Im extremely pleased with the performance of the helmet and would certainly replace it with the same model. My biggest takeaway from the BOA Fit System on the Ambush 3 is that it holds the helmet in position extremely well without having to really crank it down. Its not one of those helmets that you can feel the muscles tense under the helmet when chewing a trail snack, or feel like the blood flow is being cut off to your scalp. So, in a short period of time, BOA-equipped MTB helmets have gone from something I couldnt wear to some of my absolute favorites. And if that was all before BOA built their in-house testing facility, I cant wait to see what comes next.

    Challenge Chicane Pro Tubular Goes 38mm Wide
    Just in time for the official kickoff of cyclocross and the USCX cyclocross series, Challenge is introducing its fast Chicane tread in a 38mm tubular. Then it was a prototype of a Limus tread mixed with a Sprint center-file tread. (All Photos: Challenge)What is the Challenge Chicane?The tread is simple: fast through the center, with taller side knobs for cornering. That makes the Chicane a good pick for dry hardpack, fast grass, tacky courses, frozen ground, and light mud where you still want speed without giving up all your grip.Its a highly versatile tire, and many riders use it far beyond its dry-weather intentions. As a 38mm tubular, this might make the most sense out of Challenges new Master Blaster lineup (my name, not theirs).Why a 38mm?A 38mm will float over roots and uneven terrain, and in dry conditions, thats a good thing. The 38mm Limus tubular didnt really get that. Because for mud, its best to stick with a narrow tire to dig down into the earth not float. Most professionals (with three-four sets of wheels in a van) will size down and run a 30mm tire for the mud. But I digress.For a lot of early-season cross racing, that is a pretty useful place to be.300 TPI Handmade CasingThe Chicane Pro tubular uses Challenges 300 TPI Super Polyester casing. Is a higher TPI better? For tubulars, yes. 300 TPI means the casing uses 300 polyester threads per inch, with finer threads packed more tightly together. That lets the tire flex and conform to the ground more easily at low pressure. This flex and suppleness is exactly what you want from a cyclocross tubular: more grip, better bump absorption, and zero chance of burping (but you can roll the tire with a crap glue job). The tradeoff is usually durability, but for race-focused tubulars, that extra suppleness is a big part of the appeal.The Chican Pro Tubulars use Challenges SMART rubber compound and PPS puncture protection between the tread and casing to minimize flats.Inside is a latex tube with a 48mm valve stem usually long enough to not need a valve extender.Pro vs. Team EditionChallenge also sells a higher-end Chicane Team Edition Handmade Tubular.The Team Edition moves to a 320 TPI sealed corespun cotton casing and Challenges softer SMARTsoft compound. The Pro sticks with the 300 TPI polyester casing and standard SMART rubber. Both weigh in around 420g for the 33mm tubular version.What should I choose? The Team Edition is the softer, more race-focused option. The Pro should make more sense for riders who race often, train on the same wheels, or just want something a little more durable.
