The Ride of the Year A Once-in-a-Lifetime Event with GRAN FONDO and BMC
Imagine flying halfway around the world, just to spend ten hours in the Black Forest. You throw a leg over the fastest race bike of the year, ride side by side with the people who built it and suddenly, youre the product manager for the next model. Between town sign sprints and espresso stops, youre deep in conversation about geometry, components and the question: what kind of story would you tell from a day like this? Thats exactly what happened at our reader event with the BMC Teammachine R01. A once-in-a-lifetime experience the cycling world hasnt seen before.Whether pedalling 900 km across Europe, or flying from Los Angeles over the Atlantic for one epic ride; it might sound crazy. Maybe it is. But as the grand finale to the biggest group test of the year, we had an idea that made it all worthwhile: we wanted our readers to have the chance to ride the fastest bike of the year themselves together with the GRAN FONDO test crew, and the team behind the bike. To experience the development process first-hand, give feedback for the next generation, and step into our shoes for a day, crafting a story in front of the camera and notepad to capture and share this one-off experience.Heres what led up to it: just under a year ago, we stood on a closed mountain pass in the Dolomites, decked out in team kits, with the eight hottest race bikes of the coming season. Oh, and a Ferrari 348 in rosso corsa, because why not?. We were there to do what we do best test bikes, tease out their differences, and create a group test that not only crowns the fastest bike of the year, but sparks dreams and tells it like it is.The experience blew us away, and we knew we had to share it. So our simple idea snowballed into something bigger. We expanded the Rari Racing Team to include ten of you, and invited everyone to join us and the BMC crew for a ride on our favourite home loop through the Black Forest. Each of you riding your own Teammachine R01, with full-on style points: the red team car with the prancing horse on the bonnet, and everything the Rari Racing Team does best pizza, Rari, amore! It was an event that not only gave a few lucky riders a rare behind-the-scenes look, a chance to meet the minds behind the designs at BMC, and enjoy an unforgettable ride but also reminded us all what really matters. The New Faces of the Rari Racing Team 2025Dana Ultra-endurance racer. Of course she rode 900 km of the route from Barcelona to Leonberg by bike.Diego Swapped his mountain bike for gravel, and then made his way to the road. For him, its the perfect counterbalance to daily life in the car industry.Hanna A racer from Stuttgart who only speaks one language across road, gravel and mountain biking: full gas. And when shes not wearing a race number, shes pedalling her bikepacking setup across the continent.Jane Owns five bikes, climbs like a mountain goat, casually snagging QOMs on the side.Julian Usually at home on an enduro bike, but will ride road bikes for pizza.Dan Flew in from Los Angeles, bringing road, XC and motorbike experience along for the ride.Olaf Rides anything with wheels. From cargo bike to aero machine as long as theres no motor, hes in.Ruben A triathlete from the Netherlands who has to ride pretty far to find 1,500 metres of elevation.Runar All-rounder from Iceland. From road to gravel, track to motorbikes as long as it has two wheels and goes fast, hes on board.A crew that could have come straight out of a casting call for the colourful face of modern cycling: sharp-eyed female racers with an instinct for performance, road veterans who know every move by heart, enthusiast riders with that unmistakable sparkle of a seasons first big ride in their eyes, and bike nerds who can identify a freehub just by its sound. Different riding styles, different preferences, aged between 25 and 50, from every corner of the map all brought together by one passion and one bike. The plan: 100 km, 1,500 metres of climbing, Black Forest views worthy of a frame, 33C heat, and not a cloud in sight. The risk? None of them had ever ridden the Teammachine R01. None of them knew each other. And judging by the first conversations, there were more than a few jetlagged faces. So, could this really work?Hot Day, Cool People and Badass BikesEveryones dialled in their setup, stuffed gels into jersey pockets and topped up the tanks with espresso and cinnamon buns. The sun is already beating down on the tarmac, and somewhere behind us, the Ferrari is purring. Theres that electric buzz in the air the kind you feel just before something big kicks off, when no one knows how its going to turn out. Fourteen riders from around the globe, none of whom have ever ridden together. All riding bikes theyve never touched before, bikes built for the pro peloton. Exciting? Absolutely. We roll out, and any nerves disappear as fast as the scent of espresso back at the start. Strangers turn into a gruppetto, gliding in pairs towards the Black Forest. The first few kilometres are easy-going, then we hit some fast descents, a spontaneous town sign sprint, and the days first proper climb. The group finds its rhythm. Hows the bike? Like its riding itself. The lines dropped mid-ride, half-laughing, half in disbelief. And its not the only one. Everywhere, the same grin. The same short but clear answer: Fast! And more than that? Agile, precise, confidence-inspiring and so comfortable you almost forget how many watts youre putting out.Strange, isnt it? Arent we riding the most uncompromising race bike of the year? The machine built to win WorldTour stages? Shouldnt it feel a bit overwhelming? And yet the confidence this bike gives you feels almost like breaking the rules.Turns out, fast doesnt have to be hard. The BMC Teammachine R01 Pros Only?If we were talking motorsport, the Teammachine R01 would be a Formula 1 car: built for pros, built to win. And thats no metaphor BMC actually worked with Red Bull Advanced Technologies on the bikes aerodynamic optimisation. Thats the same team that usually designs wings for F1 cars, hulls for offshore racing yachts, and components for aircraft. But today, were not interested in wind tunnel graphs or flashy fact sheet figures. What matters is how the bike feels on the road, with real people behind the bars. That cant be measured in watts or seconds. And lets be honest none of us here are pros, and our only goal is to have as much fun as possible. So, are we riding the wrong bike? Wouldnt a more relaxed all-road bike like the Roadmachine have been the sensible choice for a cruise through the Black Forest? Probably. But fun isnt always sensible. And whats more fun than a fast, precise bike that urges you to push harder and rewards you with pure riding joy? Its that mix of confidence and speed that becomes addictive.Of course, the Teammachine R01 isnt built for everyday riding. Its not a long-distance workhorse for ultra-endurance events. Its more like a sports car you dont buy it for the commute: you buy it for sunny weekends and empty backroads. A bike that doesnt compromise, doesnt ask if its practical, only if youre ready to go full gas.And thats exactly what were about to do. At the top of the days biggest climb, the Rari Racing support crew is waiting, with espresso, cake and a stunning view. Lets go!Party Pace & V8 soundWe chase each other up the climb. At the summit, were greeted with caffeine, sugar, breathtaking views and a much-needed cool breeze. From here on its all downhill!. Of course, thats a blatant lie. But the rolling return route invites one last big push. The sun casts the Black Forest in golden light, with long shadows dancing across the tarmac. What a great day of riding. We burn our final matches on the long straight into town and roll back to our starting point, cooked but grinning; legs heavy, minds light.Waiting for us? Piping hot pizza, ice cold beer and a shower that feels like a full-body reset. We share our stories, relive the ride and wonder how everything ran so perfectly. Not even a single puncture shout out to Pirelli If we had to sum up the day in one word? Harmony. Not just between rider and bike, but between total strangers brought together by a shared passion for riding bikes. Were already plotting the next reader event, with one goal: to make the things we love real and tangible for you. Big thanks to BMC for teaming up with us, and to everyone who joined the ride. Until next time!Speaking of next timeGot any ideas or wishes for what our next reader event should look like?Take part in our short survey and help us plan an unforgettable experience and with a bit of luck, you might even bag yourself a spot!Der Beitrag The Ride of the Year A Once-in-a-Lifetime Event with GRAN FONDO and BMC erschien zuerst auf GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine.

Specialized Diverge 2026 on Test Caught Between Adventure and Race Fever
With the new 2026 Diverge, Specialized brought their adventure gravel platform right up to date. That means wider tires, an updated Future Shock and a redesigned storage compartment. But is that enough to meet the demands of both adventure riders and gravel racers? We got our hands on the bike ahead of launch and put it to the test on the gravel roads of Slovenia. Heres what its capable of.Specialized Diverge 4 Expert AXS | kg 8.9 in size 56 | 6,299 | Manufacturers-WebsiteA lot has changed since the last Diverge launched back in 2020. Gravel has exploded. Races have become faster, longer and tougher, while the idea of adventure gravel has evolved. Todays gravel bikes are expected to deliver massive tire clearance, loads of grip, plenty of compliance, as well as being bikepacking-ready and aerodynamically efficient. Thats exactly where the new 2026 Specialized Diverge enters stage. Its built to handle everything from big off-grid adventures to fast-paced gravel racing. Key updates like increased tire clearance, the new Future Shock 3.0 suspension system and a proven bikepacking setup aim to make it a true all-rounder. We took the latest Diverge out on the gravel roads of Slovenia to see how it performs in the GRAN FONDO test.Baby steps Whats new on the 2026 Specialized DivergeAt first glance, the new 2026 Specialized Diverge looks a lot like its predecessor and thats no surprise. This isnt a radical overhaul,, which isnt necessarily a bad thing. After all, the Diverge is built on a proven and hugely popular platform, known above all for its clever suspension system. Thats exactly where Specialized made their key update: the 2026 Diverge now comes equipped with the latest Future Shock 3.0. First seen on the Specialized Roubaix SL8 and the Turbo Creo, the system offers 20 mm of front suspension travel. All in all, the springs in the Future Shock system (left) can be swapped between three different stiffness levels and fine-tuned using red spacers. To fine-tune the system, the integrated steel spring can be swapped for one of three stiffness options. You can also adjust it further using spacers, tailoring the setup to your weight and riding style. The suspension itself is available in three versions. Version 3.1 comes with just the steel spring and no damping. Step up to version 3.2 and you get a hydraulic damper for added control. The top-tier 3.3 version features the same damper but with an external dial, letting you fine-tune the damping characteristics on the fly. Adding to the comfort concept is the Roval Terra seatpost, which can flex backwards by up to 18 mm to offer extra compliance on rough terrain. To boost compliance even further, the 2026 Diverge can now take up to 50 mm gravel tires with 8 mm of clearance on each side, according to Specialized, essentially unchanged from the previous model. If youre willing to sacrifice a bit of that margin, Specialized claim that you can even squeeze in 2.2 mountain bike tires. Another update comes in the form of a redesigned frame storage system. The SWAT Box 4.0 now features a bigger opening and even more internal space for gear. And for the first time, the aluminium version of the Diverge also gets this integrated storage compartment, a real first for the range.Even with the 50 mm wide Specialized Tracer tires fitted to the test bike, theres still plenty of clearance on the fork.Yes, you can even fit mudguards to the 2026 Specialized Diverge though tire clearance is then limited to 45 mm.Theres plenty of room at the rear too, so its no surprise that Specialized claim the Diverge can handle MTB tires up to 2.2 wide.If you need even more storage, youll have to add bags but thats no issue here. Thanks to its bikepacking-friendly design, the 2026 Diverge comes with mounts on the fork, top tube and downtube, giving you plenty of options for attaching gear. And if thats still not enough, theres even the option to fit a rear pannier rack. It might sound like a lot, but when you realise that most of these features were already on the previous model, its clear the 2026 Diverge is more of a gentle evolution than a bikepacking revolution. Visually, too, not much has changed. With its chunky frame, the bike is still instantly recognisable as a Diverge. Unfortunately, that also means it still lacks a fully integrated cockpit. When the ride turns into an adventure, the 2026 Specialized Diverge is right in its element.Gravel racer or adventure buddy? Why the 2026 Specialized Diverge refuses to chooseThe Diverge, a race bike? According to Specialized, absolutely. So its no surprise that the first glimpses of the yet-to-be-released model came during the Unbound gravel race in the US. Its exactly this kind of high-speed, long-distance challenge where the 2026 Diverge is meant to shine, thanks to Specializeds Suspend the Rider concept. But while most of todays gravel race bikes are focusing on wide tires and aero optimisation, Specialized are sticking with their proven Future Shock system. The big question is whether this much-loved adventure bike can really hold its own against the new breed of fast, aero-optimised gravel racers. Our test bike may come with a modern narrow handlebar and a long stem, but the external cable routing feels anything but up to date. Its a fair question. Even if youre willing to overlook the lack of aero optimisation, the absence of a fully integrated cockpit and the relatively high weight of 8.9 kg, the Diverge still doesnt quite fit the racing mould, mainly due to its tall front end. That makes it a solid choice for ultra-distance gravel events or particularly rough terrain, but not quite the ideal match for what modern gravel racing has become. So why try to be two bikes in one? The reason Specialized seem reluctant to fully commit in either direction is likely down to a gap in their line-up: they dont currently have a dedicated, modern gravel race bike. Hopefully, thats a gap theyll be filling soon. The 2026 Specialized Diverge in DetailOur Diverge Expert AXS test bike retails at 6,299, and comes equipped with a SRAM Rival AXS XPLR groupset, paired with a matching Rival crankset featuring a 40 T chainring without power meter. Specialized also spec the bike with their in-house Roval Terra C wheelset and 45 mm wide Specialized Tracer tires, although our test bike was fitted with the 50 mm version. The saddle, too, differs from the standard build: instead of the usual Power Expert, we had the chance to ride the S-Works Power EVO. In this slightly modified spec, our test bike tips the scales at 8.9 kg.Ready for anything with its robust down tube protection and third bottle cage mount, the Specialized Diverge is fully adventure-ready!The S-Works Power Evo saddle isnt part of the standard spec and was only fitted to our test bike for review purposes. With DT Swiss 370 hubs on the Roval Terra C wheelset, Specialized are relying on proven, reliable performance.Specialized also offer the aluminium Diverge 4 as a Sport or Comp version, which set you back 2,299 and 2,799, respectively. Both models come with the Future Shock 3.1 as standard. The Sport build features a Shimano CUES drivetrain, while the Comp version rolls out of the factory with a mechanical SRAM Apex groupset. If youd rather go for the carbon version, the entry-level Diverge 4 Sport Carbon is available from 3,499. And for those who want nothing but the very best, the Diverge 4 Pro LTD flagship model comes with a SRAM Red AXS XPLR groupset and premium components, all wrapped in a special racing Gloss Flow Red Yellow LTD paint finishPrice is 9,999.Specialized Diverge 4 Expert AXS 2026 6,200SpecificationsSeatpost Roval Terra Carbon 27,2 mmBrakes SRAM Rival 160/160 mmDrivetrain SRAM Rival AXS XPLR 1 x 13Chainring 40Stem Future Stem mmHandlebar Specialized Adventure Gear Hover 420 mmWheelset Roval Terra 12 x 100 / 12 x 142Tires Specialized Tracer 700x 45cCranks SRAM Rival XPLR AXS 172,5 mmCassette SRAM XPLR XG-1251 10-46Technical DataSize 49 52 54 56 58 61Weight 8,90 kgThe Geometry of the 2026 Specialized DivergeA glance at the geometry chart confirms that the 2026 Diverge is a worthy successor to Specializeds popular all-rounder. But look a little closer and youll spot some key updates. Specialized increased the reach slightly, allowing for shorter stems and more direct handling. At the same time, a slacker head angle and longer chainstays bring added stability and boost tire clearance at the rear. The geometry has also been adjusted to better suit modern, wider gravel tires, with a lower bottom bracket drop for improved cornering and confidence on loose ground. With a stack height of 610 mm and a reach of 400 mm, the resulting stack-to-reach ratio of 1.53 places the rider in a balanced yet upright position, just right for relaxed, off-road-focused riding where control and comfort are key.Frame Size495254565861Reach365 mm374 mm387 mm400 mm412 mm425 mmStack563 mm578 mm592 mm610 mm634 mm659 mmHead Tube90 mm104 mm116 mm135 mm161 mm187 mmHead Angle7070.571717171BB Drop85 mm85 mm85 mm85 mm85 mm85 mmChainstay Length430 mm430 mm430 mm430 mm430 mm430 mmWheelbase1019 mm1031 mm1041 mm1060 mm1081 mm1102 mmHorizontal Top Tube521 mm537 mm556 mm575 mm593 mm613 mmSeat Tube400 mm430 mm470 mm500 mm530 mm560 mmSeat Angle74.57474747474With the multitool mounted on the bottle cage, you can take care of quick adjustments and minor repairs on the go.Everything else can be stashed in the spacious SWAT Box integrated into the down tube of the Specialized Diverge 2026.Built for Adventure The 2026 Specialized Diverge on ReviewRight from the first ride on Slovenias demanding gravel tracks, the 2026 Specialized Diverge showed what its capable of. Our test bike, a mid-range build featuring the Future Shock 3.2, stood out with strong acceleration, confidence-inspiring handling and impressive comfort. The combination of stable, predictable handling, front suspension and the flexing seatpost works together brilliantly. Its a setup that really shines when youre cruising along gravel roads, taking in the scenery without a care in the world. The upright, relaxed riding position only adds to the adventure vibe you get the feeling you could tackle anything. All thats missing are the bags for your next big trip.In more agile situations where razor-sharp handling and maximum stiffness are key, the 2026 Diverge starts to show its limits. Without a full lockout on the Future Shock 3.2, the front end remains active during sprints, steep climbs or when youre out of the saddle pushing hard. While great for smoothing out rough ground, that movement takes away some of the bikes precision and snappiness when youre trying to attack fast, flowing gravel sections with real intent. For bikepacking and long-distance adventures, the balance of comfort and composure is spot on. But for more performance-focused gravel riding, the Diverge lacks that direct, lively feel you might want. That said, the overall ride is composed, predictable and incredibly safe. The suspended front end with integrated damping does a great job of ironing out bumps and vibrations, transforming rough tracks into relaxing touring routes. The top-tier Future Shock 3.3 performs even better in this regard, allowing you to fine-tune the damping and stiffen up the front end for a more efficient ride feel when needed. The same cant be said for the undamped 3.1 version found on the aluminium versions. Especially in direct comparison, the front end of the 3.1 setup feels noticeably less composed and significantly less refined. Who should take a closer look at the 2026 Specialized Diverge? With the Diverge 2026, Specialized present a versatile gravel bike built for just about any adventure. Thanks to the high comfort level, countless mounting points and clever integrated storage, the Diverge is ready for anything. Whether its a relaxed weekend ride, your daily commute, a shopping trip to the supermarket or a full-blown bikepacking expedition, this bike is in its element. Even the occasional gravel race can be part of its repertoire. But if youre after a truly fast, race-ready gravel machine for serious training or competitive racing, the 2026 Diverge isnt the right tool for the job.Helmet Kask Protone Icon | Glasses Oakley Radar EV Path | Jersey Pas Normal Studios Mechanism Pro Jersey | Shorts Pas Normal Studios Mechanism Pro Bib | Shoes Shimano S-PhyreConclusions about the 2026 Specialized DivergeWith the 2026 Diverge, Specialized delivered a solid all-round gravel bike with serious adventure potential. Its not just a looker the updated Future Shock 3.0 and expanded storage make this one of the best evolutions of the Diverge to date. Whether its everyday riding or a long-haul tour, the Diverge feels like it was made for the job. Still, it isnt flawless. 2026 Cervlo R5 First Ride Review A Mountain Goat with Tour de France Pedigree?
With the brand-new 2026 R5, Cervlo are not only launching one of the lightest road bikes out there, but also a bike thats already earned its stripes. Even before its official release, this climbing machine helped secure victory at the Tour de France Femmes. But how does this featherweight performer hold up outside the pro peloton?Cervlo R5 | kg 5.97 in size 56 | 12,999 | Manufacturers-WebsiteCervlo look set to overhaul their entire racing line-up this year. Following updates to the aero-focused S5 and the gravel-ready spero-5, its now the turn of their lightweight climbing race bike, the R5. Unlike the heavily-revised spero-5, the changes to the R5 are a bit more subtle, at least at first glance. True to the classic R5 silhouette, youll need to look a little closer to spot whats new. But make no mistake, the 2026 R5 has had a serious refresh. One of the headline figures: it now dips below the magical 6 kg mark, which makes it nearly a full kilo under the UCIs minimum weight limit. But is such a low weight still relevant in todays road bike world? After all, even aero-optimised race bikes can hit the UCI limit of 6.8 kg without breaking a sweat. So where does that leave the new 2026 R5? To find out, we got our hands on the bike ahead of launch and put it through the wringer in the French Alps, including on the final stage of the Tour de France Femmes. The big question: does the new R5 live up to its promise?Reaching new Heights with the 2026 Cervlo R5 but are Climbing Bikes still up to Date?It seemed the days of dedicated climbing bikes were numbered. Aero bikes and all-rounders had grown so dominant, often brushing the UCI weight limit of 6.8 kg while delivering better all-round performance. But thats about to change. A new wave of ultralight bikes is aiming to put the climber back on top. The secret recipe? A complete build under 6 kg, without relying on delicate weight-weenie components. Even with pedals, a head unit and a full bottle, these bikes still stay under the weight limit. And the pros are fully on board. On certain mountain stages, a lightweight climbing bike right on the UCI limit can clearly outperform heavier aero or all-round race bikes. No surprise then that the new Cervlo R5 was the bike of choice for freshly-crowned Tour de France Femmes champion Pauline Ferrand-Prvot, riding for Team Visma Lease a Bike. She put in a blistering performance on the Col de la Madeleine, gaining a full 2 minutes and 37 seconds on her rivals and securing the yellow jersey astride the R5.The holy couple Tour de France winner Pauline Ferrand-Prvots two race bikes rest against the team car after the final stage. While the pros have to weigh their bikes down to meet UCI regulations, the rest of us, the UCI outlaws, get to enjoy the full benefit of these featherweight machines. For once, were one step ahead. With ultra-light bikes like the 2026 Cervlo R5, every climb feels a little less daunting, every switchback becomes a chance to accelerate. In that sense, climbing bikes are more relevant than ever. Because cycling is still about emotion, freedom and the pure joy of riding so why drag any more weight up the mountain than absolutely necessary? You might not be quite as fast as the pros, but with the same equipment, the feeling is every bit as good.Lightweight down to the last Detail all the Updates on the 2026 Cervlo R5From the very start of development, one goal for the new 2026 Cervlo R5 was crystal clear: it had to make it under 6 kg limit. But while weight was the top priority, stiffness couldnt be compromised. The new R5 had to match the performance of its predecessor in terms of frame rigidity no easy task, and only achievable by reworking every single detail of the frame. The 2026 Cervlo R5 is available in two colours. Our test bike came with bronze-coloured decals, while an alternative silver version is also on offer.Even at first glance, the lightweight frame makes it clear that nothing has been left untouched. Cervlo fine-tuned every tiny element, hunting down every last gram. The result? A noticeably slimmer downtube, even thinner seat stays, a reworked bottom bracket area and a lighter seatpost clamp design. Major updates, even if they only reveal themselves in subtle visual details.Three generations in one the difference becomes especially clear along the downtube, where the 2026 Cervlo R5 reveals itself as not only the lightest, but also the sleekest R5 to date. The bottom bracket area has also seen major changes the new version (right) is noticeably boxier than its predecessor (left), helping to save weight while maintaining high stiffness. The most noticeable visual change hides in the fork. Gone is the distinctive chin of its predecessor, meaning the fork is no longer seamlessly integrated into the frame. The 2026 R5 now features a similar front brake setup to the Cervlo spero-5, using direct mount disc brakes. This makes it possible to mount the brake caliper directly onto the fork without the need for an adapter. The trade-off? The front end is only compatible with 160 mm rotors. Also new is the fully integrated Cervlo HB18 cockpit, featured for the first time on the R5. Based on the dimensions of the S5 cockpit, it has a 2 sweep. That means a bar measuring 38 cm at the hoods flares out to 42 cm in the drops. The aero profile adds a touch of wind-cheating performance, helping the 2026 R5 carry speed more efficiently on the flats. At the same time, Cervlo redesigned the seatpost, shaving off a few extra grams through careful material optimisation. Thanks to the new direct-mount option for the front brake, theres no need for an additional adapter anymore. The most noticeable difference from the previous model the fork on the new Cervlo R5 no longer flows seamlessly into the frame.Cervlo didnt stop at the frame they scrutinised every single component. According to the manufacturer, small details like the new UDH-compatible mech- hanger and smart spec choices such as the revised Reserve 34|37TA ST wheelset and TPU inner tubes helped shave off a total of 396.5 g. Practically no part was left untouched. Even the saddle clamp, seatpost collar and top cap have all gone on a weight-loss programme. Before and after even the smallest components on the new 2026 Cervlo R5 have shed weight. (left = new)The weight-saving design is especially noticeable at the seatpost clamp. Not even the tires escaped Cervlos relentless hunt for grams. The 2026 R5 rolls on 26 mm Vittoria Corsa Speed tires, a clear nod to the bikes climbing focus and racing DNA. While these time trial tires fit the concept well, the narrow 26 mm width feels a little dated by modern standards. Still, theyre undeniably light. With a maximum tire clearance of 34 mm, theres plenty of room for upgrades if you fancy a bit more volume or versatility. The 2026 Cervlo R5 in DetailThe first Cervlo R5 to feature a fully integrated cockpit is getting the full celebration it deserves: all versions come equipped with the new Cervlo HB18 cockpit. Our top-tier test model comes is fitted with SRAMs RED XPLR groupset and a 48T aero chainring with integrated power meter. At first glance, that might seem like an odd choice, why would a gravel drivetrain end up on a road bike? Its not really about weight, as this setup saves just 1 gram according to Cervlo. And its not about gearing either, since the range is similar to that of a traditional 2x road setup. The real reason lies elsewhere: its part of the current trend to establish modern 1x drivetrains on the road and to do away with the front derailleur entirely. The XPLR group is paired with Reserve 34|37TA ST wheels laced to DT Swiss 180 Dicut hubs, 26 mm Vittoria Corsa Speed tires, and a Prologo Nago R4 PAS Lightweight Nack saddle. All together, this top-tier build weighs just 5.97 kg retailing at 12,999.The SRAM Red AXS XPLR drivetrain with a 10-46 T cassette and 48 T chainring makes it easy to conquereven steep climbs. The 2026 Cervlo R5 comes fitted with 26 mm Vittoria Corsa Speed tires as standard, but with generous tire clearance, theres plenty of room to size up.Cervlo offer two more high-end builds, both of which are specced with the same Reserve 34|37TA ST wheelset. For the groupset, you can choose between a SRAM Red AXS with a QUARQ power meter anda Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 with the 4iiii Precision Pro Gen3+ DUAL power meter. Both variants retail for 12,999.If youre looking for something a little more budget-friendly, Cervlo also offer two more accessible options, each fitted with Reserve 34|37TA ST wheels paired with DT Swiss 240 hubs. Here, you can choose between a SRAM Force AXS or Shimano Ultegra Di2 groupset. Both come equipped with power meters and are priced at 8,999. And if none of the complete builds tick the right boxes, Cervlo also offer a frameset for 5,699.Cervlo R5 2026 12,999SpecificationsSeatpost Cervlo SP33 D-ShapedBrakes SRAM RED AXS 160/140 mmDrivetrain SRAM RED XPLR AXS 1 x 13Chainring 48Stem Cervlo HB18 100 mmHandlebar Cervlo HB18 400 mmWheelset Reserve 34|37TA SL DT 180 12 x 100 / 12 x 142Tires Vittoria Corsa Speed 700 x 26cCranks SRAM RED AXS DUB 170 mmCassette SRAM RED XPLR XG-1391-E1 10-46Technical DataSize 48 51 54 56 58 61Weight 5,97 kgThe Geometry of the 2026 Cervlo R5The racing DNA of the Cervlo R5 is clear in its geometry. At the request of the pros, its now aligned with the fit of the Cervlo S5, making it easier for riders to switch between the two platforms. In practical terms, this means 5 mm less stack height. The bottom bracket drop has also been adjusted to suit modern, wider tires, sitting 2 mm lower than before. The result is a sportier, lower centre of gravity, even when running wider tires. With a stack-to-reach ratio of 1.45, the overall geometry remains aggressive and performance-focused.Size485154565861Reach368.7 mm376.5 mm383.3 mm391.1 mm400.3 mm408.3 mmStack496.1 mm520.2 mm544.6 mm567.5 mm590.7 mm610.7 mmChainstay Length410 mm410 mm410 mm410 mm410 mm410 mmBB Drop76.5 mm76.5 mm74 mm74 mm71.5 mm71.5 mmHead Angle717273737373Seat Angle74.57473.5737373Horizontal Top Tube506 mm526 mm544 mm565 mm581 mm595 mmHead Tube89.6 mm109.3 mm132 mm156 mm182.8 mm203.7 mmWheelbase976.8 mm977.6 mm978 mm992.8 mm1010.3 mm1024.5 mmPure Climbing Performance first Ride Review of the 2026 Cervlo R5Enough with the numbers, how does the featherweight 2026 Cervlo R5 actually ride? From the very first pedal strokes, the bike impresses with its snappy, almost effortless acceleration. Thanks to the lightweight wheelset, low overall system weight and efficient frame, even the slightest pressure on the pedals is instantly converted into forward motion. Its especially fun on climbs and when kicking out of tight switchbacks. The agile, responsive handling adds to the excitement. At low speeds, the precision is spot on, while at higher speeds, the bike manages to stay composed and stable. Whether youre seated or out of the saddle, the R5 stays fast and efficient, and the ease with which it surges forward will have you chasing more elevation with a smile. But all that climbing prowess doesnt come at the expense of downhill performance. On descents, the 2026 R5 delivers fast, agile and confidence-inspiring handling. Its precise without ever feeling twitchy, letting you carve through corners with control and ease. The only real limit here is the narrow tire width. A modern 28 to 30 mm setup would unlock noticeably more grip and confidence. That said, the bike still offers surprising compliance even with the skinny 26 mm tires. The ergonomic cockpit does a great job of absorbing vibrations, and together with the frame and seatpost, it delivers an impressively comfortable ride without sacrificing stiffness in sprints and with hard efforts. Also surprising is how well the SRAM Red XPLR groupset performs in this build. Yes, you give up a bit of top-end speed, and the gear jumps in the upper range take some getting used to, but if youre happy to ditch the front mech, this 1x setup works brilliantly. All in all, the 2026 Cervlo R5 is a true climbing bike that shines in almost every situation. Whether youre grinding uphill or bombing back down, it feels right at home.Who should take a closer look at the 2026 Cervlo R5?The 2026 Cervlo R5 isnt just for mountain goats and Alpine enthusiasts. Yes, its clearly built with climbing in mind, and the low system weight and punchy acceleration make it an absolute joy to ride uphill. But thanks to the well-balanced handling and consistently strong performance in most scenarios, the R5 feels just as capable when the road points down or flattens out. Sure, youll have to add weight if you want to race it in UCI events, but if pure riding enjoyment matters more to you than top speed on the flat, the Cervlo R5 is one of the most exciting and rewarding bikes out there.Helmet Kask Protone Icon | Glasses Oakley Encoder | Jersey Pas Normal Studios Mechanism Long Sleeve | Shorts Pas Normal Studios Escapism Bib | Shoes Shimano S-PhyreConclusions about the 2026 Cervlo R5 Weighing in at just under 6 kg, the 2026 Cervlo R5 clearly has one goal in mind: big climbs. But despite what the scales suggest, this bike is capable of far more than just ascending mountains. The balanced handling, impressive comfort and well-thought-out ergonomics make it a strong performer in most situations. Even the bold spec choice with SRAM Red XPLR proved its worth in testing, delivering smooth, efficient shifting both on steep climbs and fast descents.TopsExcellent climbing performanceUltra-low weightPremium finishFlopsSlightly narrow tires Tuning Tip: 30 mm wide tires for more grip and even more fun on the descents. For more details, visit cervelo.com. The new MAHLE X20 Update A Digital Ride Booster
More power at the push of a button? MAHLEs latest firmware update for the X20 hub motor promises more than just a little bit of fine-tuning. 18% more torque and 10% more power, all through software alone? Sounds intriguing! Heres everything you need to know about the update. Some software updates slip by unnoticed. Others transform your ride entirely. Over the past few months, a new trend has emerged: e-bike motor manufacturers are releasing digital upgrades to squeeze more performance out of existing systems. Instead of reaching for the toolbox, performance now comes from the cloud. MAHLE are the latest to join the fray with a digital turbo for their rear hub motor. The X20 is getting a virtual power boost and were here to tell you whether it delivers, and how to get your hands on it.This firmware update marks the next evolutionary step for a motor thats already known as one of the lightest and least obtrusive drive units out there now with added bite. And its not just the software thats been tweaked. The latest X20 units are now compatible with SRAMs UDH standard, paving the way for e-gravel bikes with cutting-edge drivetrain systems.Development and testing all happen in Palencia, right in the heart of northern Spain. Thats where MAHLE took over the start-up Ebikemotion back in 2018 and where around 50 engineers are now working on the future of lightweight e-drives. Custom-built test rigs are used to put the motors through extreme heat, cold, moisture and long-term strain. We already visited the MAHLE SmartBike Systems R&D department back in 2023 and took a close look behind the scenes.Even back then, it was clear: this isnt just about hardware. When theres a Smart suffix in the name, you need clever software to elevate a simple drive system to the next level. MAHLEs Smart Assist mode is a great example, using a wide range of data inputs route length, heart rate, gradient, battery level and rider power to fine-tune support and adapt to the riders needs.A closer look at the X20 upgrade More oomph from the cloudTipping the scales at just 1.39 kg, the X20 motor has already helped several bike manufacturers build sporty e-road and e-gravel bikes that feel more like an analogue bike with a gentle breeze of tailwind than a bulky e-bike. Weve already tested it in models like the Mondraker Dusty XR, BMC Roadmachine AMP ONE and ROSE REVEAL PLUS, pushing the X20 to its limits both on the road and off it.What stood out was its natural ride feel, subtle assistance and low system weight. But theres a fundamental difference between hub motors and mid-drive units: hub motors deliver their power directly to the rear wheel rather than through the drivetrain. Weve already taken a deep dive into how that impacts performance and cleared up some common myths around the topic. That direct power delivery has a cascading impact on the way torque figures are understood. Before the update, the X20 delivered a maximum of just 23 Nm on paper. But since it bypasses the gears and acts directly on the rear wheel, MAHLE say that it feels more like a 55 Nm mid-drive motor. Or rather, now, like a 65 Nm motor. Because according to MAHLE, the new firmware increases torque by a hefty 18%. In real-world terms, that means more punch when setting off, more power on steep climbs and a smoother, more confident delivery of force.Peak power has gone up too: from 250 watts to 275 watts an increase of around 10%. Upping your personal peak power by 10% would take serious training. The X20s built-in power meter reads your own output and adds up to 200% on top, depending on the support level.Whats especially interesting is that MAHLE managed this performance boost without changing the housing or adding any weight. The X20 remains one of the lightest and most compact drive units on the market, weighing in at around 3.2 kg including the 236 Wh battery and motor controller.Worth noting: for now, the update is only available for newly-produced X20 motors with the current hardware generation. If youve already got an X20 on your bike, youll need to wait a little longer for the digital boost. MAHLE say the update will be available for existing X20 systems from the end of 2025.More than just software? The hardware updates in the latest X20 generationAlongside the digital performance boost, the new generation of the X20 also gets a few tangible hardware upgrades. The motor now comes with a redesigned end cap and a new freehub, making it fully UDH-compatible. That opens the door to pairing it with SRAMs latest Transmission drivetrains, which are gaining traction fast. This is particularly exciting for the gravel segment. Manufacturers can now build e-gravel bikes that meet high-tech standards, with sleek integration, extra torque and the advantages of electronic 13-speed drivetrains like SRAM Rival XPLR, Force XPLR or RED XPLR. Combined with the performance upgrade, the X20 should now be more than capable of handling steep, loose climbs with ease. But does it really live up to the promise? Time to hit the test track.Putting the latest MAHLE X20 to the testA 10% increase in power sounds great on paper but can you actually feel it on the road? In short: yes.Since the firmware update, the X20 accelerates with noticeably more intent, especially in the higher support modes. This isnt a 1,000-watt monster flinging you up hills at 25 km/h without a drop of sweat. Its a precise and responsive push that enhances the bikes vitality without changing what it is.And thats exactly what you want from an e-road or e-gravel bike: a light, agile setup that fades into the background above the 25 km/h threshold, but still takes the sting out of long climbs. The X20 remains a motor for riders who want to stay in control. The update simply gives it a bit more punch right where its needed most.By design, hub motors have a disadvantage when starting uphill. Low speed and high resistance mean that the direct drive to the rear wheel requires a pedalling cadence thats not always there. This is exactly where the new software tuning comes into play. When pulling away from a tight switchback or tackling a steep gravel ramp, the motor now delivers noticeably more oomph. Its not a night-and-day transformation, but it is that subtle yet crucial difference that helps you find your rhythm quicker.Once youre in the flow, the assistance blends in seamlessly with your own power, ensuring a completely natural ride feel so natural that you might even forget youre even on an e-bike after a few kilometres. The only reminders are the motors soft hum at full tilt and your surprisingly low heart rate after reaching the top of a climb. And what about range? In theory, it drops slightly due to the higher power output. But in practice, it never became an issue during our test rides. Above 25 km/h, our Ridley E-Grifn test bike just kept rolling smoothly under muscle power alone. Thats exactly the appeal: more support when you want it, and easy pedalling when you dont.MAHLE have managed to make their smallest, lightest and now most powerful hub motor even better. More power, more torque and the addition of UDH compatibility take the X20 to a new level without compromising on weight or integration.Der Beitrag The new MAHLE X20 Update A Digital Ride Booster erschien zuerst auf GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine.

Ready for Adventure? 2025 ROSE BACKROAD on Review
A bold new design, more tire clearance and clever features like a dynamo hub and an integrated storage compartment: the 2025 ROSE BACKROAD leaves behind its all-rounder image and goes all-in on adventure. We got our hands on the successor to ROSEs gravel best seller ahead of launch and took it for a proper spin to see whether ROSEs popular all-rounder has morphed into a full-blown adventure machine.ROSE BACKROAD unsupported | 11 kg (manufacturers specification, including light, dynamo, power bank) in size M | 4,400 | Manufacturers WebsiteDare to explore few slogans could be more fitting as we find ourselves ankle-deep in sand in the Veluwe National Park. The sun shimmers over purple blooms, fine dust clouds swirl underneath the 50 mm tires, and our test bike looks like its been pulled straight from the pages of a survival magazine. The BACKROAD has been a runaway success for the German brand. When we tested the previous model in 2020, it impressed with great versatility, a solid spec and a price point that appealed to both ambitious gravel riders and everyday cyclists. It also proved that ROSE were quick to recognise the gravel trend and got it right from the start. Now, the German manufacturer gave its bestseller a serious adventure-focused overhaul, drawing a clear line between this model and the race-oriented BACKROAD FF, which came out on top in our 2025 gravel race group test. The new BACKROAD isnt trying to be all things to all riders anymore. With clearance for much wider tires, more mounting points, an integrated storage compartment and in the motoreless version a dynamo hub, lighting system and onboard power bank, this is a bike built for serious backcountry exploring. ROSE are tapping into a growing trend in the gravel scene: a shift towards self-supported, long-distance capability. Hub dynamos, charging ports and built-in storage once reserved for custom builds are becoming standard on production bikes.Just like Canyons Grizl CF Escape, ROSE are flipping the gravel adventure concept on its head. But can this new version carry on the success of the original? We took it for a proper ride before launch to find out.Big changes: the 2025 ROSE BACKROAD in detailAt first glance, its obvious: this is no marketing exercise. The new BACKROADs adventure credentials run deep, from the bold silhouette to the integrated features. Overall, the frame looks burlier compared to the outgoing model: a boxier silhouette, chunkier top tube, beefier seatpost. The styling remains firmly routed in ROSEs design language, but this version has been turned up a notch more muscle, more presence. Even with the big storage compartment in the downtube, the design stays coherent. It doesnt feel like overkill, which is the case with the car boot-sized compartment of the Orbea Terra Adventure. The new BACKROAD looks noticeably beefier than its predecessor, but still clearly stays true to ROSEs familiar design language.A cut-out on the seatpost clamp, hidden beneath a plastic cover, is carried over from the previous model and is designed to add a touch of flex and comfort.Tire clearance is now up to 53 mm, which adds to the tough, purposeful look. The white version almost channels Cybertruck vibes, while the Terra colourway gives off a certain Lego Duplo charm with its playful accents. At 11.0 kg in size M (including dynamo system, lights and power bank) its not exactly featherweight. But strip off the extra features and it starts to look more reasonable.Plenty of space: the new fork fits tires up to 53 mm wide and adds extra mounting points thanks to threaded eyelets. There are also plenty of mounting options: threaded eyelets on the frame and fork for bottle cages, bags, racks and mudguards though mudguards only work with tire widths of up to 45 mm. The bike comes standard with a frame bag, and the unsupported model also has a top tube bag. Both are part of a collaboration with Fidlock and can be quickly clipped on and off thanks to the magnetic mounts. The frame bag, in particular, sits incredibly securely and, according to ROSE, even improves aerodynamics. Weve seen a similar approach on the BACKROAD FF. In practical terms, it means that you gain about one watt with the bag mounted. And with the dynamo switched on, youre only losing two watts instead of three. Thanks to Fidlocks magnetic closure system, the bags can be attached ansd removed with a simple click. The top tube bag is ideal for keeping valuables safe during a quick stop at the supermarket.A Suitable Model for Everyone? The 2025 ROSE BACKROAD Spec VariantsROSE offer the 2025 BACKROAD in two frame materials and a total of nine versions: five in carbon and four in aluminium. There are three main variants the BACKROAD AL, the BACKROAD CF and the BACKROAD CF unsupported, which is the flagship adventure model. The aluminium BACKROAD with Shimano GRX RX400 groupset retails from 2,000, and is aimed at bikepacking newcomers. Other builds feature GRX RX610 or SRAM Apex AXS XPLR groupsets. The AL version is available in sizes from XXS to XXL and comes in three colour options: Dune, Soleil and Soil.In the Terra colorway, the Backroad 2025 adds playful Lego-Duplo vibes to its adventure-ready character.Rose Backroad unsupported 2025 4,400SpecificationsSeatpost Rose D-Shape Gravel D-ShapedBrakes Shimano GRX BR-RX820 160/160 mmDrivetrain Shimano GRX RX820 1 x 12Chainring 40Stem Rose ALR 2.0 90 mmHandlebar Rose Gravel 420 mmWheelset Rose G30 12 x 100 / 12 x 142Tires Schwalbe G-One Overland 700 x 50cCranks Shimano GRX FC-RX820-2 170 mmCassette Shimano GRX 10-51Technical DataSize XS S M M/L L XLWeight 11 (Herstellerangabe, inklusive Licht, Dynamo, Powerbank) kgSpecific FeaturesSupernova front and rear lightSON hub dynamo with integrated power bank stored in the frame compartmentFrame bag included in the boxPrices for the carbon BACKROAD start at 3,000 (mechanical Shimano GRX RX820 groupset) and go up to 4,200 for the models with either the electronic GRX Di2 or SRAM Force AXS XPLR. The CF models come in two colour options Terra and Lions Mane and are available in sizes XS to XL. The flagship unsupported model comes equipped with a SON dynamo hub, Supernova lighting, integrated power bank and a USB-C charging port. Priced at 4,400, its built specifically for long-distance, self-supported adventures. The aluminium version in Dune, shown here as the Backroad AL EQ with full everyday kit.The carbon model in Lions Mane, pictured here in the unsupported setup for self-sufficient adventures. All versions come with one standout feature: an integrated storage compartment in the frame. For the BACKROAD AL, this marks a genuine first its the first aluminium gravel bike ever to include this feature. All models come with standard internal wiring (minus the power bank), which makes it particularly easy to retrofit a SON dynamo hub.Lets Go Wild! The ROSE BACKROAD unsupported ModelThe unsupported version is the most uncompromising top-tier model in the new BACKROAD line-up purpose-built for adventures far from civilisation. With a SON dynamo hub, Supernova lighting, integrated power bank and USB-C charging port, its designed to keep you riding for days without needing a plug socket. The SON dynamo hub is neatly integrated into the front wheel and can be controlled via a switch hidden in the bar-end plug.At the heart of the system is the internal power supply. A switch in the bar-end plug lets you choose on the fly whether the dynamo powers the lights, charges the power bank in the down tube, or stays switched off entirely. According to ROSE, the dynamo draws around 3 watts of rider power. The power bank isnt just a buffer for the lighting system it also includes a USB-C port beneath the stem, allowing you to charge your GPS or smartphone while riding. This means that your entire setup stays powered without the need for external chargers or constantly worrying about battery levels. The entire power system is routed discretely through the bike: all cables run internally through the frame and converge inside the storage compartment, which houses not only a Swat-style bag but also the power bank in the unsupported version. The Supernova headlight switches on automatically in low light and offers not just a powerful dipped beam but also a bright high beam. In urban settings it might seem like overkill, but out in the wild or on remote forest trails, its a real safety bonus. At the rear, a permanently wired light ensures youre visible from behind, with all cables neatly routed internally the entire power distribution happens invisibly within the frame. The integrated Supernova headlight with high beam function ensures optimal lighting in the wild and a small rear light mounted on the left seatstay.Even the standard CF and AL models come pre-routed from the factory, which makes it easy to retrofit a dynamo hub. To fully embrace the self-sufficiency concept, ROSE deliberately chose not to equip the unsupported model with electronic groupsets like Di2 or AXS they would still require dedicated batteries. Instead, the bike runs the mechanical Shimano GRX RX820 for maximum reliability. If something goes wrong, a cable can be replaced anywhere not something you can say for a snapped Di2 wire or a dead battery.According to ROSE, the mechanical Shimano GRX RX820 is the perfect choice for real off-grid adventures: its tough, offers a wide gear range and is easy to maintainThe Geometry of the 2025 ROSE BACKROADThe geometry of the new BACKROAD 2025 shifts the focus even further towards comfort and adventure. With a reach of 396 mm and a stack of 581 mm in size M, the bike maintains a stack-to-reach ratio of 1.47 just like its predecessor clearly distinguishing it from the much more aggressive Backroad FF, which comes in at 1.41. The head angle is now 0.25 slacker than before, which should translate into more stable and composed handling. At the same time, the slightly steeper seat tube angle puts you in a more efficient pedalling position. The wheelbase has been extended by 14 mm to offer added stability when bombing down gravel tracks with a loaded setup, while the chainstays have been shortened by 2 mm to keep the rear end agile and responsive. All in all, the new Backroad strikes a clear middle ground between its predecessor and the race-focused Backroad FF, with a geometry thats been purposefully tailored for big adventures and long days in the saddle.SizeXSSMM/LLXLSeat Tube462 mm481 mm501 mm511 mm531 mm556 mmTop Tube525 mm545 mm560 mm575 mm590 mm615 mmHead Tube102 mm122 mm137 mm157 mm167 mm182 mmHead Angle70.57171.2571.2571.571.5Seat Angle75.574.574.257473.7573.5Chainstay425 mm425 mm425 mm425 mm430 mm430 mmBB Drop78 mm78 mm78 mm78 mm78 mm78 mmWheelbase1018 mm1025 mm1035 mm1049 mm1064 mm1086 mmReach384 mm388 mm396 mm403 mm412 mm430 mmStack545 mm565 mm581 mm600 mm610.5 mm624.5 mmBuilt for Adventure? The 2025 ROSE BACKROAD on ReviewTo put the new BACKROAD through its paces, we headed to the ROSE Adventure Summit in the Dutch Veluwe National Park. Sand, rooty trails and blooming heathland offered the perfect mix to test the bike on everything from punchy singletrack to long, flowing straights. The new BACKROAD is neither a twitchy racer nor a sluggish pack mule. Acceleration is direct, but not explosive no surprise given the 11 kg build, chunky 50 mm tires and sturdy aluminium wheels. The stiff frame delivers solid power transfer, but dont expect it to feel especially snappy. What it does offer, though, is a huge amount of confidence. It holds its line with great stability and stays calm under pressure no twitchiness, no fuss. It feels planted on fast descents, and truly comes to life on long gravel stretches and flowing forest tracks. It handles trails well too, though here it demands slightly more rider input. Handling is always intuitive and predictable, whether youre in deep sand or rattling over loose gravel. The mechanical Shimano GRX 112 offers plenty of control and confidence with its wide gear range and powerful brakes. Rose have deliberately chosen this low-maintenance drivetrain, and it holds its own when it comes to shifting performance, even against Di2 or AXS. Reliable and easy to look after, its built for adventure in Anatolia. The wide tires only add to that monster truck feeling, making the BACKROAD a reliable companion long after other bikes would have thrown in the towel. Prefer something quicker and more nimble? Check out our gravel tire group test for faster-rolling alternatives. On tarmac, the higher rolling resistance and slightly sluggish feel become noticeable it takes a bit more effort to build up speed. Once you get the bike up to speed, it impresses with its efficient rolling performance. Whats surprising is the BACKROADs handling: despite its relaxed, straight-line stability, it still navigates tighter corners with ease and stays well controlled, even in deep heathland sand. Comfort comes mainly from the combination of the wide tires and well-balanced geometry. The frame itself is on the stiffer side, while the seatpost cut-out provides a bit of flex especially noticeable for lighter riders. That said, the ride is never harsh. Paired with a sporty but relaxed riding position, its a setup that makes even long hours in the saddle feel manageable. The cockpit is also well designed, with ergonomics that feel spot-on whether youre riding on the tops or down in the drops. The only real downside is standard top tube bag. While its a practical idea, the execution isnt perfect. To fit the ultra-wide top tube, the bag had to be made fairly wide, but its also quite shallow just enough space for snacks or small bits and pieces, but not really enough for a phone. To remove it, it has to be slid sideways to the left. That means if youre used to swinging your right knee forward when starting off or stopping at lights, you might end up knocking it off by accident. Tuning tip: Fit a set of lightweight carbon wheels for a livelier ride and reduced overall weight.Who should take a closer look at the ROSE BACKROAD?The new ROSE BACKROAD is a purpose-built adventure machine for bikepackers and off-road enthusiasts who want to stay off the grid for days at a time. If your idea of fun involves gravel roads, forest trails or remote landscapes like the Australian Outback, this bike is a solid and reliable partner. If youd rather plough through mud on fat tires than glide across smooth tarmac, youll feel right at home astride the BACKROAD.Even commuters with a taste for adventure will get on well with it the BACKROAD isnt a classic commuter bike, but with mounting points for racks and an integrated lighting system, its perfectly capable of handling day-to-day riding. And while ROSE clearly steered the BACKROAD towards the adventure category, its still versatile enough to handle more traditional gravel riding. Thanks to the relaxed geometry, the high level of comfort and planted handling, its just as suited to long mixed-surface rides or post-work laps through the woods, even without bikepacking bags. So unless youre chasing KOMs, the BACKROAD is the better all-round option compared to the FF, which is firmly aimed at race-focused riders.Helmet Abus Airbreaker | Glasses Shimano Equinox | Jersey MAAP Evade Pro Base Jersey 2.0 | Bibs MAAP Team Bib Evo Cargo | Shoes Canyon Tempr CFR Offroad | Socks MAAP Divison Mono SockConclusionsThe new 2025 ROSE BACKROAD is a true adventure companion built for comfort, long-distance rides and proper off-road fun. With clever touches like integrated storage compartment, internal wiring and Fidlock bags, it shows just how well thought-out an adventure-ready gravel bike can be. The wide tires, composed handling and relaxed riding position inspire confidence, even when the terrain gets rough. ROSE made a clear move away from the all-rounder gravel concept and positioned the BACKROAD firmly in the adventure camp. All thats missing is an urban world championship though, sadly, theres no trophy yet for the fastest commuter. But if there were, chances are the winner would be sitting on this rocket: the Specialized Turbo Vado SL 2 S-Racing LTD.Thats right! The Turbo Vado SL 2 was originally designed as a city and fitness bike available as the EQ version with mudguards and a rack, or as a step-through for maximum comfort. But with this strictly limited edition, Specialized unleashed their performance crew. The result? A city e-rocket infused with the manufacturers racing DNA: SRAM RED drivetrain and brakes, Roval carbon wheels, and a one-piece carbon cockpit straight out of the XC and high-end road racing world leave no doubt about its intentions. The goal: an ultra-light e-bike built for fast commuting, fitness, and exploration. For this special moment, Specialized reworked the Porto with a custom setup to haul not one, but two Turbo Vado SL 2 S-Racing LTDs in great style. The sight alone would make any shaggy mule question its life choices. Together with Stephan, the two bikes, and the hefty construction, the rig tipped the scales at a solid 175 kg. Beyond the Finishline the new GRAN FONDO issue #030 is here!
Imagine this: youre all set on spinning an epic tale, but nothing happens. Or youre counting on your GPS, and it completely lets you down. Or youve flown all the way from Los Angeles to Stuttgart for an exclusive five-hour test ride, only to pull out halfway through with cramps. A nightmare? Not at all. This is where life truly begins. No doubt about it when youve honed every pedal stroke for the Tour de France and things go sideways, the frustration is real.. You had your sights set on a massive goal, gave it your all, and then the brutal realisation hits you: all that effort, and for what? Was it all for nothing?Sure, most of us arent riding the Tour de France. But what about goals? We all have them. Big ones, small ones, crazy and even secret ones. And thats a good thing. Goals give us direction. They get us moving. And they show us what really matters even if, along the way, we change course, ease off the pace or end up somewhere completely different to where wed planned. But goals can also get in the way. Especially when they take centre stage and make us forget about life itself whether its at work, with our favourite sport, in relationships or with that one dream bike wed do anything to get our hands on. So why do they get in the way? Because too many of us want the results, but hate the process. And if we keep pushing our happiness and satisfaction into the future, always tying them to the next big goal, then were no better than a donkey chasing the carrot thats dangled in front of its nose. But if we can learn to enjoy the ride, to embrace the process, then it doesnt really matter where we end up. And thats exactly how it was with this issue. One of our biggest highlights this season was the grand finale for the Rari Racing Team: ten selected readers from around the world USA, Spain, Iceland, the Netherlands and Germany joined us to test the winning bike from our big race bike group test: the BMC Teammachine R01. But that was just the start. Alongside the folks from BMC in Switzerland the team behind the bike our readers stepped into two new roles. First up, they became product managers, tasked with designing their own bike. Then they turned into journalists, challenged to find the story theyd tell about the event. Because every story is about perspective. What we notice, what we focus on, and how we interpret whats happening all of that shapes how a story lands. Whether it moves you, inspires you or just falls flat.Efficiency, acceleration, handling, comfort, grip, puncture protection even aero gains. One wear-and-tear part on your bike affects all of the above. More speed per euro? Thats rare. We put 13 of the most exciting high-end road bike tires through their paces, both out on the road and in the lab. Which tire is the best? And the fastest? And what are the 7 key takeaways? Read our comparison test to find out.Speaking of which: every great tire needs a great wheel to match. So we went straight to the Tour de France, joining Team Lotto and Basque wheel manufacturer OQUO for the Grand Dpart. The catch? Great wheels dont exactly make for gripping stories. But dont worry this ones well worth a read. When was the last time you got completely lost? Or cursed your bike computer? Weve tested the three hottest top-tier models from Garmin, Wahoo and Hammerhead in a head-to-head showdown. And honestly, it was one of the most nerve-racking group tests weve done in ages. Some devices arrived still in beta mode, and constant software updates meant features and performance changed throughout testing. But each one still had its own character. So what are they actually capable of, and which one suits your needs best? Which features really make a difference, and whats just overpriced fluff? When everythings always within reach, sometimes we need to practise going without. Or put limits on ourselves. Just like ultra cyclist Jack Thompson, who decided to ditch modern tech and ride his own version of the 1903 Tour de France with just two gears.Maybe its not about the perfect outcome. Not about the most miles, the deepest reserves or the fastest bike. Maybe its about how the journey feels. What we learn when things go sideways. How we grow when we let go. And our new mate Dan from LA? Despite the cramps, he had an incredible time because if the finish line isnt what its all about, but the experience is, then you get the best of both worlds. With that in mind enjoy this issue and whatever goals youre chasing next. Wherever they take you.Enjoy the mix of articles that have made it into this issue, and grab yourself some inspiration! Get the latest issue directly on your device if you already have our app. Otherwise, simply install it from the App Store (iPhone/iPad) or the Play Store (Android Smartphones & Tablets).Der Beitrag Beyond the Finishline the new GRAN FONDO issue #030 is here! erschien zuerst auf GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine.

Drink & Drive! 12 Non Alcoholic White Wines Reviewed
Blazing heat, roaring rides and ice-cold white wines without the buzz. We gathered high above the rooftops of Stuttgart for our DOWNTOWN Rooftop Tasting and raised a glass to summer! Read the full article to find out how the 12 non alcoholic white wines fare, and why some of us ended up with a hangover the next day.Wine behind the wheel? Absolutely! But how good are non alcoholic white wines really? We hosted a laid-back DOWNTOWN tasting session and invited along some friends from @abnormstudio, @heizrclub and @tofino.store to sip our way through 12 bottles of non-alcoholic white wine. Non alcoholic wine is no longer just a backup plan its a statement of a conscious lifestyle and totally on trend. Especially white wines without the booze promise summer vibes, vibrant aromas and easygoing pleasure for all occasions. Heres what impressed us and what didnt. Cheers!Whether its a sunset date on a rooftop, dinner with friends or a little me-time on your terrace non alcoholic white wine is no longer just a bland knockoff of its boozy cousins. The range is huge and seriously exciting: From zesty Sauvignon Blanc alternatives to delicately sparkling whites that verge on bubbly. Many non alcoholic white wines today bring bright freshness, zesty acidity and even a touch of fizz qualities youd normally expect from a glass of sparkling wine. Perfect for warm days, light dishes or simply a little joy in a glass. And because the non alcoholic world plays by its own rules, categories start to blur. A dealcoholized white wine with bubbles is it sparkling wine? Or just a really good wine with a twist?Total flop or just a sip gone wrong? If you want to know which alcohol-free white wines impressed us, which left us cold and which one gave us a headache despite having zero alcohol you can find the full article in our sister magazine DOWNTOWN.Der Beitrag Drink & Drive! 12 Non Alcoholic White Wines Reviewed erschien zuerst auf GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine.
