TRP x Classified Launch Vistar Wireless 116 Drivetrain!
Last years premium mechanical mountain bike drivetrain was just a warmup to TRPs big drivetrain ambitions, and now, along with Classified, theyre unveiling two wireless, electronic-shifting wide-range 1x groups for both road and gravel bikes!Called Vistar // Powershift, the group pairs a wireles derailleur and 12-speed cassette with Classifieds two-speed internally geared hubs, they achieve a wider range of unique gears up to 530% range with an 11-40 cassette.Thats massive range. For perspective, Shimanos 10-51 mountain bike cassettes have 510% range. SRAMs 10-52 Eagle cassette has 520% range. And now you can get 530% on your gravel bike with a 10-40 cassette and simple 1x chainring. Thats really cool, but its the execution that makes this really something specialManual shifting, automatic gear selectionWith just 12 cogs, Classified says youre getting the equivalent of 15 or 16 unique gears, depending on which cassette you choose. They havent unveiled all of the options yet (stay tuned, theyre launching this at Eurobike and well update this post with more tech details soon), but there should be gearing options that prioritize cadence and gear steps for roadies, or more range for gravel cyclists.Because its all electric, and its all part of the same system now (as opposed to pairing a Classified hub with 3rd party derailleurs & shifters), everything can work together harmoniously, and they call this symphony of shifting QuantumShift. With QuantumShift turned on, you can simply shift up or down and it will automatically shift the derailleur or the hub (or both) to give you the smallest gear step possible in either direction. This effectively gives you 15 to 16 individual gears.Turn it off and you can shift through the cassette and hub manually, giving you 24 gears just like a normal 212 drivetrain, albeit with some duplication of gear ratios.Eliminating the downsidesWith Classifieds 2x hubs, which are widely considered a gamechanger (try one if you can), the downsides have been that you need to add a third shifter pod to your handlebar, and you need to use their proprietary modified cassettes on an otherwise SRAM, Shimano, or Campagnolo group. Now, they have a complete system that takes advantage of TRPs existing HyWire-style electronic shifters and proven hydraulic braking, same as whats used with Pinions electronic shifting gearbox system. This gives you a familiar set of controls, with shifter paddles in all the usual places. It also gives you the aerodynamic advantages of a 1x chainring, and lets you quickly change chainring size based on course conditions. Chainline can be better, and you can use a more efficient larger chainring up front since the hubs easier gear acts like a small chainring. Two cranksets are offered the Classified aero chainset with solid chainring, or the Vistar crankset with lighter direct-mount chainrings.Youll still need to use their wheels, or have their hub built with your favorite rims and spokes. There are a lot of brands on board offering Classified-compatible wheelsets, though, and I imagine options will continue to expand with this announcement.Classified-Cycling.ccThe post TRP x Classified Launch Vistar Wireless 116 Drivetrain! appeared first on Bikerumor.

The Aero 111 front tyre is Continentals most aerodynamic yet up to 18 watts faster than a GP 5000
Continental, DT Swiss and Swiss Side have partnered to develop the Aero 111 a tubeless aerodynamic road racing tyre designed specifically for the front wheel.First spotted at the Tour de France but now officially launched, the design sees cavities in the tread function as vortex generators, which are said to help air stay attached to the front wheel, in order to improve aero efficiency and handling. While the tyre is optimised for use with DT Swiss ARC, AR and A, and ERC, ER and E wheels, Continental says it will provide a competitive advantage to riders using wheels from other brands, too.The tyre is available exclusively from online retailers Bike24 (Europe) and Competitive Cyclist (US), as well as direct from Swiss Side, costing 119.95 / $120.95.Setting a "new benchmark" in aero performanceThe Aero 111 tyre is designed for the front wheel only. - Continental / DT Swiss / Swiss SideThe Continental Aero 111 tyre features 48 cavities set within the tread, referred to as vortex generators, which the brand says are intended to help control the airflow as it passes over the front tyre and wheel.Developed with aerodynamics specialists Swiss Side, and using DT Swiss wheels to model performance, the pattern is said to trip the airflow, creating a more turbulent boundary layer (the layer of air closest to the surface of the rim). The air is then said to stay attached to the rim for longer, delaying flow separation and, in turn, maximising the sailing effect. We spotted the tyre at the 2024 Tour de France Grand Dpart in Florence. - George Scott / Our MediaFor context, the pursuit of more efficient aerodynamics is often centred on the idea of keeping air attached to the profiled body for longer when air becomes prematurely detached from the body (otherwise known as separation of flow), it creates a wake, which causes drag. The sailing effect is generally maximised when the airflow is controlled to the point where it creates a higher pressure zone behind the profiled body. The higher pressure then effectively pushes the body into the lower pressure area ahead of it.Wind tunnel testingContinental / DT Swiss / Swiss SideWhen mounted to a 62mm-deep DT Swiss ARC 1100 Dicut wheel (which has a 20mm internal rim width), DT Swiss says a 700 x 26c Aero 111 tyre is slightly more aerodynamically efficient compared to a 700 x 25c Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR tyre when exposed to 30kph winds at 0-10 degrees of yaw.Between 10-20 degrees of yaw, though, the Aero 111 tyre is claimed to be up to around 6 watts faster, which corresponds to an approximate -2.5 watt sailing effect, according to Continental.Continental / DT Swiss / Swiss SideTested at 45kph, the main benefit is seen at 15-20 degrees of yaw, delivering up to around 18 watts improvement (translating to an approximate -10 watt sailing effect), according to the testing figures provided.Tests were also conducted at 30kph using a 700 x 29c Aero 111 tyre mounted to a 45mm-deep DT Swiss ERC 1100 Dicut wheelset, compared to a 700 x 28c GP 5000 S TR tyre.Continental / DT Swiss / Swiss SideThe graph reveals similar aerodynamic performance up to around 7 degrees of yaw, after which up to 20 degrees of yaw the Aero 111 tyre is shown to be up to 4 watts more efficient.Continental / DT Swiss / Swiss SideTested against selected competitors from Schwalbe, ENVE, Vittoria, Cadex and Pirelli, the Aero 111 is also shown to be more efficient across the 0-20 degree yaw angle range.Again, this comes from the testing figures provided as part of the Aero 111 launch. The Schwalbe Pro One TLE (700 x 25c size) is the closest-performing tyre, overall, at 30kph, and the Cadex Aero Tubeless (also 700 x 25c size) closest at 45kph.Continental / DT Swiss / Swiss SideIts worth noting that, when asked, the brands wouldnt supply exact figures for the tests so all figures and comparisons stated (above and below) are extrapolated from the graphs supplied by the brands, with a margin for error. That said, Swiss Side confirms that all graphs display the aggregated results of multiple tests carried on a rolling wheel rig in Swiss Sides wind tunnel, and that further tests carried out on full bike setups corroborate the findings.Swiss Side also says tests have also been carried out on wheels with 20, 22 and 24mm internal rim widths, with similar trends seen.Perhaps unsurprisingly, given the tyre is developed with DT Swiss, its not disclosed what alternative wheels the Aero 111 tyre has been tested with.Improved handlingThe tyre is being used by the Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale team, paired to a GP 5000 S TR at the rear. - Tim de Waele / Getty ImagesThe brands also claim that the Aero 111 tyre brings improvements to bike handling, thanks, they say, to its ability to reduce the force of the air detaching from the wheel-tyre system, compared to a Continental GP 5000 S TR tyre.At both 30 and 45kph, the Aero 111 tyre is said to bring consistently-increasing steering moment force (measured in Newton-metres) from zero to +/- 20 degrees of yaw, rather than the sudden change typically seen with a GP 5000 S TR tyre.Continental / DT Swiss / Swiss SideIn this instance, a 700 x 26c Aero 111 tyre was fitted to the same DT Swiss ARC 1100 Dicut wheel, but pitched against a wider 700 x 28c GP 5000 S TR.Continental / DT Swiss / Swiss SideThe grey lines in the graphs show the sudden decrease of required steering force (shown to be around 10 degrees of yaw at 30kph, and 15 degrees of yaw at 45kph), effectively illustrating the moment at which the air typically detaches from the test wheel when using the GP 5000 S TR reference tyre. The brands say that this sudden change in force acting upon the wheel causes less stable handling, bringing about more steering corrections, and in turn forces the rider to slow down (or use a less aerodynamic position).GP 5000 S TR DNAThe Aero 111 tyre is said to have most in common with a Continental GP 5000 S TR in terms of construction. - Simon von Bromley / Immediate MediaContinental says the Aero 111 tyre uses the same technologies as its Grand Prix 5000 TR family of tyres, which includes the GP 5000 S TR, GP 5000 AS TR and GP 5000 TT TR.When asked, Continental confirmed that the tyre is most similar to the GP 5000 S TR in terms of construction, and that the tyre is suitable for use on both hooked and hookless rims.Continental says the Aero 111 tyre uses its BlackChili compound, contributing to low rolling resistance and exceptional grip in both wet and dry conditions, although it has been modified slightly to accommodate the vortex generators. While the brand doesnt offer any comparison with competitors, our own rolling resistance testing has showed the GP5000 S TR to be competitively efficient versus rival tyres, while offering good grip and suppleness on the road. Both the GP 5000 S TR and GP 5000 AS TR rate highly among competitors already. - Ashley Quinlan / Our MediaThe brand says its Active Comfort Technology also helps the tyre absorb vibrations, with a 2 x 220 TPI (thread-per-inch) casing.Ultimate expected tyre life isnt published, but the brands say that the tyre has been used for over 2,500km before any negative aerodynamic impact is seen from the worn vortex generators. The brands also say the Decathlon-AG2R La Mondiale WorldTour team has been using the tyre in training since December 2023, with no negative reports (relative to the GP 5000 S TR tyre).A 700 x 26c tyre is said to weigh 250g, while a 700 x 29c tyre is quoted at 280g for comparison, weve weighed a 700 x 28c GP 5000 S TR tyre at 280.6g.Continental Aero 111 pricing and availabilityThe Aero 111 is being distributed in Europe and the US, with availability in the UK subject to import duties. The Continental Aero 111 tyre is available today, from Bike24 in Europe and Competitive Cyclist in the US, as well as from Swiss Side. The tyre is set to cost 119.95 / $120.95. Both 700 x 26 and 29c sizes come in a black sidewall only.UK customers are able to buy from Bike24 and Swiss Side (with the price subject to exchange rates and import duties from the EU).DT Swiss also offers the Aero 111 tyre with selected wheelsets (listed below) as part of a new wheel-tyre system for a 100 upcharge, fitted with a TPU (thermoplastic polyurethane) inner tube. Classified and TRP join forces to launch a wireless groupset
CyclistClassified and TRP join forces to launch a wireless groupsetClassified has combined its two-ratio hub gear with a new 12-speed electronic gear system from TRP, to provide a single chainring groupset with 212-speed wireless electronic shifting. Although you can operate it like a conventional 212-speed system, the new Vistar // Classified gearing can be configured to offer 16 sequential gears for road or 15 for gravel use. Fitted with an 11-42 tooth cassette, this offers a wider 530% range than the alternatives from SRAM and Shimano. The Vistar // Classified system will be available from Q3 2024, with prices yet to be announced. Related Posts Gravel groupsets reviewed: Shimano vs SRAM vs Campagnolo Opinion: Down with electronic shifting! Gravel bike gearing: Everything you need to know Classified Powershift hub review Bicycle gear ratios explained Buyers guide to road bike groupsets Shift under loadBelgian brand Classifieds Powershift hub gear offers the benefits of a 2x system with a single chainring, with two sets of ratios available via gearing in the rear wheels hub. Its a pared-down version of a multispeed hub gear, which rivals a two chainring system in weight and allows shifting under load as the planetary gears are continuously engaged. Shifting usually requires a satellite shifter-style button on the bars.We loved the fast shifting under load without the risk of chain drop when we reviewed the Classified Powershift system in 2022.Now Classified has joined forces with TRP to create a complete wireless electronic groupset called Vistar // Powershift. This combines derailleur shifting over a 12-speed TRP cassette with the Powershift hub to provide 15 or 16 sequential gears with the potential for a huge range of over 530%.The system logic takes care of deciding whether your next gear up or down requires a derailleur shift or a change in the Powershift hub gear ratios. If you prefer, you can also choose to work the two systems separately, as with a conventional 2x system, to provide 24 gears, although as with a 2x groupset, youll then have gear ratio overlaps, which the sequential setup avoids.Road and gravel configuration optionsThe Vistar // Powershift system is available in two configurations, with either 16 discrete ratios for road use or 15 for gravel use. When the Classified hub is paired with an 11-40t cassette, Vistar // Powershift provides a gear range of over 530%. For comparison, a SRAM mullet build has a 520% maximum range and Shimano GRX 12-speed Unstoppable offers 510% range.Among the benefits claimed for the new system besides eliminating the risk of chain drop and crunch-free shifting under load are increased drivetrain efficiency and lower frictional loss than a conventional 2x system. There should be less wear on components, as the system logic helps to maintain a straighter chainline and the single chainring is larger than the small ring in a 2x system. You can also shift when stationary, thanks to the Classified hubs continuous engagement.Without two rings and a front mech, the system is claimed to be more aero too. Theres a Classified aero chainset available, as well as a standard open sided design. The derailleur battery is removeable for charging, which also means that you can carry a spare in case it runs flat on longer rides.Of course, the groupset also includes TRPs hydraulic disc brakes, which the brands say offer one-finger braking, with the brake levers designed for ergonomics for a wide range of hand sizes.Although TRP is best known for its brakes, it also sells two 1x MTB groupsets with mechanical shifting over cassettes up to 10-52t. It claims that the Wave tech in the Vistar // Classified cassette, as with other brands systems, such as Shimanos Hyperglide+, offers rapid shifting between sprockets.Vistar // Classified has already seen action at the 2024 Unbound Gravel race with the Classified Ridley Factory Teams Arno van der Broeck using it in the premier nine-hour 200-mile race.Theres no word yet on pricing, but we do know that Vistar // Classified is expected to be launched towards the end of Q3 2024, when further details of the system and its gearing options will be made available. Meridas pocket-friendly Big.Trail hardtail is built to pack a punch thanks to updated geometry and value-focussed specs
Merida is focusing on fun times and value with its updated Big.Trail range of hardtails. The trail hardtail is often ignored, with high-tech, super-specced full-suspension rigs stealing the limelight. However, with far fewer moving parts, the hardtail shouldn't be overlooked, especially if youre looking for grins that dont cost the earth.Meridas refreshed Bike.Trail 29er bikes aim to provide those smiles, without you needing to visit the bank manager. The new bike range has updated geometry with longer reach, slacker head angles and steeper seat angles, as well as sensible tyre choices and a sturdy 140mm-travel fork.Refined chassisReady to get shreddy. - Ian Linton / MeridaThe Big Trail's alloy frame has been built with trail performance in mind, according to Merida, thanks to a modern shape that shouldnt baulk at steep and technical terrain. However, Merida has given a nod to versatility, recognising that many people will want a bike to do numerous jobs. This means at the back there are hidden rack and mudguard (fender) mounts, and even kickstand mounts for cross-town jaunts. There are also attachment points for Merida's large MTB fender, borrowed from the brand's One.Forty and One.Sixty models. This bolts directly onto the rear seatstay brace.Merida is confident in the chassis abilities, with the frame rated to Category 4, meaning you can race enduro on it.Merida's extended rear fender can be bolted straight into the frame via these holes in the rear brace. - Ian Linton / MeridaMod consSRAM's Univeral Derailleur Hanger sits at the back of the bike, ready to accept a SRAM Transmission direct-mount rear derailleur, or offer up easy replacement if you bend a traditional derailleur hanger. An ISCG05 mount wraps around the threaded BB shell.Theres chunky chainstay protection, to reduce chainslap noise, which can be distracting on the trail. Its made from two materials a rigid plastic that means theres no glue required to attach it to the bike, and a softer rubber that dampens noise, bolstered by air pockets to ensure a silent ride. The Boost-spaced rear end can accept up to 2.4in tyres, mounted to Meridas own 30mm internal-width rims.Cables enter the frame via the headset. - Ian Linton / MeridaInternal routingPerhaps the most obvious feature of the cockpit, at least in the absence of clutter, is the Wire Port, Meridas system of running cables and hoses into the down tube, via the headset. This includes a two-piece headset cover, made for Merida by Acros, which is claimed to provide impressive durability thanks to its sophisticated seals.Want to carry loads on the bike, rather than your back? Theres space for two bottles (Merida claims the Long and XLong frame sizes can carry two 700ml bottles, while even the XShort can take one 700ml and one 500ml) plus a mount under the top tube to attach tools and a tube. This is in addition to Meridas multi-tool stashed under the saddle.Sorted shapeMerida's Big.Trail range is built for laughs on the trail, with modern geometry, powerful brakes and grippy rubber. - Ian Linton / MeridaThe Big.Trails geometry is defined by Meridas Agilometer philosophy. Rather than small/medium/large frames, Merida dub their sizes from XShort to XLong, across five sizes. While the previous Big.Trail reviewed as part of our 2024 Budget Mountain bike of the Year test wasnt old-school in its shape, with a 65.5-degree head angle and 435mm reach in a Medium, Merida has grown the Big.Trail further. The head angle has slackened by 1.5 degrees to a raked-out 64 degrees, while reach figures have increased a Mid size has a reach of 455mm, 20mm longer than the previous-generation Medium model. We love to see little aesthetic details. - Ian Linton / MeridaSeat tubes are designed to be short this allows for longer-travel dropper posts, plus gives you the ability to pick a frame size on reach, rather than seat tube length.Seat tube angles are steepened to 76.5 degrees, from 75.5 degrees, while the bottom bracket sits 70mm below the axles nice and low. Continental Aero 111 front tyre has claimed aero gains even at 30 kmh
CyclistContinental Aero 111 front tyre has claimed aero gains even at 30 kmhA collaboration between Continental, DT Swiss and SwissSide sees the launch of the Aero 111 front wheel-specific tyre, which the brands claim is the most aero tyre available. They say that the aero benefits are the same at 30kmh as at 45kmh, so the new tyre benefits most cyclists, not just the fast guys. At higher wind yaw angles, they report negative drag in their tests, so the tyre actually helps propel you forward. It also has a more linear response to wind yaw angle, resulting in lower steering moment and less twitchy handling in crosswinds. The Continental Aero 111 front tyre is tubeless-ready, hookless-compatible and available in 26mm and 29mm widths with claimed weights of 250g and 280g respectively. Both widths are priced at 119.95 or $120.95. Theres no UK pricing yet.DT Swiss will offer its performance race and endurance wheelsets ready-fitted with the Aero 111 front tyre and a Continental Grand Prix 5000 S TR rear tyre with TPU tubes pre-installed with a price supplement on the same wheelsets without tyres that varies up to 150. Related Posts Opinion: Your tyres are wrong Hooked vs hookless rims: Pros, cons and which is right for you Best road bike tyres 2024: 10 of the best tyres for all occasions The spokesmen: Inside DT Swiss How to ride in crosswinds Patented vortex generatorsThe key innovation in the new tyre is a patented set of 48 rectangular cavities distributed over the tyres tread. These are claimed to act as a vortex generator, helping to ensure that airflow stays adhered to the front wheels sides and delaying flow separation. The tyre is the result of a four-year project between the brands. DT Swiss has worked with SwissSide to develop its wheels aerodynamics for ten years. Further optimisation was needed to consider the wheels along with the tyres though, so Continental was brought onboard to help design a tyre to aerodynamically optimise the entire wheel-tyre system.Other features of the new Continental Aero 111 tyre are inherited from the GP 5000 S TR tyre range, so the new tyre is tubeless-ready, uses a reformulation of the BlackChili rubber compound and includes Vectran puncture protection. The tyre is compatible with hookless rims.It is currently in use at the Tour de France by the Decathlon-AG2R pro team on its SwissSide wheels.Claimed better performance than the competitionConti isnt the first tyre brand to develop a tyre with claimed aero benefits.Schwalbe has its Pro One Aero tyre, which it claims works with wheels including the Syncros Capital to offer up to 22% lower air resistance than its Pro One TT tyre.Giants Cadex performance brand has also developed its wheels and tyres together, with the Cadex 50 Ultra Disc wheels and Cadex Aero tubeless tyres claimed to provide aero benefits.More recently, Zipp has worked with Goodyear to develop tyres aero-optimised for its 353 NSW and 303 wheels.SwissSides CEO Jean-Paul Ballard is blunt though. There are no aero tyres on the market, he claims. When testing competitor tyres, the brands say they found that some offered little or no aero gain. Others worked optimally only at specific, usually high, speeds and with wheels of a limited depth range. Their conclusion was that the aero tyres on the market served a limited group of riders, with aero gains difficult to replicate. In contrast, they claim that the Aero 111 tyre provides its optimal aero gain at lower speeds of around 30kmh, more typical of the average road rider. There are significant gains claimed at wind yaw angles above 10 degrees too, thanks to an optimised sail effect.Ballard says that SwissSides wind-tunnel testing shows negative aerodynamic drag figures for the new tyres at higher yaw angles, which are more likely to be experienced by riders at lower speeds. Negative drag means that the tyre actually adds forward propulsion.Theres little or no aero effect for the tyre on the rear wheel, as the airflow there is already turbulent following interaction with the further forward parts of the bicycle and its rider, so the Aero 111 tyre is designed for front wheel use only.Aero drag is only one aspect of tyre performance though and the brands also claim that rolling resistance is the lowest of the tyres they have tested.Another effect of the new tyres aero drag reduction is a more linear steering moment when riding in crosswinds, resulting in more predictable handling and providing the confidence to stay in an aero riding position.Such crosswind stability is another hot topic in wheel design, emphasised for example by Fulcrum as a feature of its new Sharq all-road wheelset. The benefits of the Aero 111 tyre are claimed to continue even with wear, with testing showing no measurable difference for tyres ridden over 2,500km.An option ready-fitted to DT Swiss wheelsDT Swiss claims there are similar aero benefits both with the 26mm Aero 111 tyre on its ARC 1100 Dicut DB 62 wheels and with the 29mm tyre on its Endurance ERC 45 wheels. It will offer the Aero 111 front tyre across a range of its carbon and alloy wheelsets, including the performance ARC 1100/1400 Dicut in 38mm, 50mm, 62mm and 80mm depths and the alloy AR 1600/1800 Spline 30.In its Endurance wheel line-up, you can buy the Aero 111 tyre paired with the ERC 1100/1400 Dicut in 35mm and 45mm depths and the alloy ER 1600/1800 Spline 30.In all cases, the wheels are sold already set-up with a Continental Aero 111 front tyre and a Grand Prix 5000 S TR rear with TPU inner tubes.DT Swiss will also sell the tyres from its site and there are aftermarket options in the US and Europe, with UK sales via Bike24.Widths, weights and pricesThe Aero 111 tyre is available in 26mm and 29mm widths. It has been aero optimised for DT Swisss aero and endurance wheelsets, but the collaborators claim that youll get aero benefits when used with other brands wheels too. They also say that the tyre will provide aero gains regardless of your wheel rims depth and width and how fast youre riding.Conti claims a 250g weight for the 26mm and 280g for the 29mm width tyres. Both widths are priced at 119.95 or $120.95, with UK prices not yet available.
