Drone manufacturer DJI unexpectedly enters cycling market with Avinox eMTB motor
Drone and action camera manufacturer DJI has entered the electric mountain bike market with the Avinox a 2.25kg lightweight motor system that delivers twice as much torque as its competitors. The motor is accompanied by a fully-fledged app and two lightweight battery options. The motor is specced exclusively on the Amflow PL at launch. Torque, torque, torqueWith its claimed torque output of 105 Nm, the Avinox trumps its competitors by a fair margin.Motor specs: 105 Nm torque, 2.52 kgBattery specs: 800/600 Wh, 3.74/2.87 kgFive assistance modes, including auto-assistThe headline stat of the new Avinox motor is its claimed 105 Nm torque output. Thats twice as much as other lightweight motors, such as Specializeds SL 1.2 (50 Nm).The DJI Avinox also easily out-powers bigger motors like Shimanos EP8 and Boschs Line CX, both of which both deliver 85 Nm. Whether or not that much torque is actually usable on the trail depends on the systems power delivery, but it's still an impressive figure. With a claimed weight of 2.53kg, the Avinox motor slots somewhere between the weight of a lightweight and a full-power motor. Specializeds SL1.2 offering tips the scales at approximately 1.9kg, whereas the EP8 and Line CX systems weigh 2.6kg and 2.9kg respectively.Auto-assist, motor modes and integrationDJI is aiming high with the Avinox system, packing a punch with its claimed low weight, high power and large battery capacity. The Avinox motor has five assistance modes, all of which are tunable via the Avinox app. Riders can choose from the traditional Eco, Trail and Turbo modes, as well as a 30-second Boost mode, which temporarily delivers maximum power and torque. The Avinox OLED display shows you your stats and has a USB-C output. For riders prefer a set-and-forget approach, DJIs motor features an auto mode. This automatically adapts assistance based on real-time information from in-built sensors. Exactly how this will work and what data the sensors collect is yet to be announced. The accompanying Avinox app enables users to tube power modes, log rides and configure bike security settings.BatteriesBoth sizes of the Li-ion battery boast impressively light weights. The motor is accompanied by two lithium-ion batteries. The flagship battery has an 800 Wh capacity and a claimed weight of just 3.74kg that's 600g lighter than the 750 Wh Bosch Powertube 750.A lighter 2.87kg 600 Wh battery is also available. Again, this is considerably lighter than comparable offerings from Bosch, such as the Powertube 625, which weighs 3.5kg.Amflow PL CarbonAt launch, the Avinox motor is exclusively specced on the Amflow PL Carbon.Information about the Amflow brand is scarce, and the PL Carbon is the only bike currently in its lineup.160/150mm travel (front/rear)29 and 27.5 rear wheel compatibilityDJI Avinox motor, 800/600 Wh batteryAmflow PL Carbon frame and suspensionThe integration of the Avinox system looks sleek. The Amflows carbon frame has a claimed weight of 2.27kg (without motor or battery), with full builds starting at 19.2 kg. It has 150 mm of rear suspension travel, which is delivered by a four-bar linkage design. The Amflow PL Carbon is compatible with both 29in and 27.5in rear wheels. Swapping from one wheel size to another is done via a flip-chip. Amflows size charts suggest four sizes will be available, from M - XXL.Amflow PL Carbon spec, pricing and availabilityAccording to Amflows website, two models will be available the PL Carbon and the PL Carbon Pro. Pricing is yet to be announced, as is the availability of the bikes, but we do know that both builds will use Fox suspension, SRAM drivetrains and Magura brakes.

WTB Adds Wider Gravel Tires, New Macro XC Race Tire & Vulpine S, Plus Casing Updates
WTB almost always has something new for us at trade shows, and Eurobike 2024 is no different. This year, there are not only new sizes of existing tires, but there are two completely new additions, along with improvements to their casing tech. New Casing UpdatesEven though you cant really see it, the casing is a critical part of the tire responsible for ride feel and puncture resistance. Starting with their completely new SG casing level, WTB has added a 120tpi casing with puncture protection in the sidewall only. That makes it their lightest and most supple casing used for lighter and race-focused tires. Their existing SG2 casing has also been updated with a new take on existing protections. While it still offers bead-to-bead puncture protection, its now split into multiple pieces that all link together. That allows for more flex and movement, but also allows for the tire to stretch to its true size (or close to it, read on for more). Expect to find this casing on gravel treads for the adventure crowd like the new Resolute 50. New Tire ModelsMacro XC Race(Photo/BikeRumor)For the XC race crowd, the new Macro will be offered only in 29 x 2.4. At 721g, the tan version of the tire came in slightly heavier than claimed, but thats still pretty light for a 2.4 tire. Calling it their first XC race tire, this tire is designed with World Cup XC racing in mind and includes the new 120tpi SG casing. Offered in 40 and 45mm widths, WTB expects this to be their fastest gravel race tire. Available in 40mm and 45mm section widths in both black and tan sidewallSimilar design as the beloved Vulpine Gravel tire with the exception of a smooth centerline for increased speedLow, tightly spaced transition knobs with plenty of working edges to provide braking and cornering traction both on and off the pavementRound tread profile to allow smooth cornering on pavement, hardpack, and dirt100% Recycled and Recyclable Packaging$69.95New Tire SizesResolute 50(Photo/BikeRumor)If adventure is what you seek, the new WTB Resolute 50 should be up to the task. Equipped with the updated SG2 casing, the Resolute 50 is up for whatever your adventure brings in all conditions. This time our sample came in under claimed weight at 619g, but it also is slightly undersized, measuring at 48.86mm wide. That measurement is after a few weeks mounted to a Reynolds Blacklabel G700 Pro wheelset with a 25mm internal width. (Photo/BikeRumor)Ive been testing these out on our Kona Ouroboros test bike which is a perfect platform for the tires. What the tires give up in on-pavement speed, they more than make up for in off-road grip. Overall, they were very easy to set up tubeless, and have held air well ever since. 50mm section widthSG2 bead-to-bead protection available in both black and tan 120tpi casing optionsMedium-height, blocky tread with rounded edges and increased ramping to provide improved mud clearing and decreased rolling resistanceTightly placed center tread grouping to aid in rolling speedWidely spaced transition and side knobs to provide increased cornering tractionRound tread profile to allow smooth cornering on hard pack and loose terrain100% Recycled and Recyclable Packaging$69.95Vulpine 45(Photo/BikeRumor)Finally, the Vulpine gets a new 45mm size for a slightly more aggressive cousin to the new Vulpine S. Instead of a slick center section, the Vupline keeps the closely-spaced ramped center knobs. 45mm section widthAvailable in both black and tan sidewall with 120tpi casing and SG protectionLow, tightly spaced tread to increase speed with plenty of working edges to provide cornering and braking traction on dirt and pavement.Round tread profile to allow smooth cornering100% Recycled and Recyclable Packaging$69.95wtb.comThe post WTB Adds Wider Gravel Tires, New Macro XC Race Tire & Vulpine S, Plus Casing Updates appeared first on Bikerumor.
