DJI Drone Tech Evolves into Mega eBike Power w/ Lightweight 105Nm Avinox Motor
Yes, drone maker DJI is now DJI the ebike motor maker, with an all-new full-power but lightweight mid-drive Avinox ebike drive system. Calling it a logical progression from the light but powerful motor & battery systems that keep their drones in the air, the DJI Avinox system powers eMTBs with 105Nm max torque from a motor that weighs just 2.5kg. That makes Avinox the lightest full-power eMTB drive I know of, and just about half a kilo heavier than the lightest motors that put out around half as much torque. And with energy-dense battery tech, DJI promises full-power ebikes as light at 19.2kg with all-day range.DJI Avinox lightweight, full-power ebike drive system(Photos/DJI)DJI says they are going to redefine the electric mountain bike (eMTB) experience with their all-new Avinox ebike drive system. With a unique combination of industry-leading torque, light motor weight, light & energy-dense battery tech, and smart automated pedal-assist modes, the new DJI Avinox ebike drive system looks poised to make a splash in the growing eMTB market. Sure, were a little hesitant any time a new company appears out of the blue with a complex technical product going head-to-head with established industry powerhouses. But its true that DJI knows how to build powerful electric motors and batteries. And no one needs to make electric drive systems lighter and more efficient than a company used to flying them in the air. So, our interest is truly piqued to see how DJI can adapt their battery-powered drone expertise into battery-powered ebikes.DJIs legacy of passion for innovation, as well as our expertise in battery and motor technology accumulated in drones and camera stabilization systems, have led us to the creation of Avinox. It is a natural move for DJI to expand into this field as we have been mastering the technologies essential to an electric bike system, in terms of reliable motor development, battery management, mechanical design and engineering. This powerful and compact e-bike drive system embodies our pursuit of technological excellence and opens up exciting new possibilities for DJI as a leading tech brand in the outdoor realm. We are thrilled to come with a new proposition where we expect our expertise can bring enhanced experience to the users. Christina Zhang, DJI, Senior Director of Corporate StrategyIndustry-leading power at superlight weightThe all-new DJI Avinox Drive Systes centers on a lightweight but full-power mid-drive motor. DJI says it puts out a max 105Nm of torque and a peak of 850W of power assist (of course, 250W nominal power to meet pedal-assist regulations.) And yet delivering industry-leading power, the Avionox motor is claimed to weigh just 2.51kg, making it the lightest full-power motor weve seen. To hit that light of a weight, DJI says the Avionox motor uses high-performance polymer gears inside its compound planetary gearset. Not just powerful and light, Avionox also promises a remarkably quiet ride.Smart pedal-assist modesAnother key element leveraging DJIs drone motor and stabilized video tech is smart pedal-assist modes. Instead of just their conventional Eco, normal riding Trail, and high-power Turbo modes, DJI Avinox adds a new algorithm-tuned Auto mode. Designed for broad adaptability and long-range use, the Auto mode utilizes multi-sensor fusion to automatically and continuously adjust assistance based on riding resistance. DJI Auto promises a longer range than just running Trail or Turbo, but still gives you powerful pedal-assist when you need it.Plus, for those moments when you want to go full gas, theres a 5th Boost mode, that surges output to the Avinoxs peak 850W power for a few seconds, at the push of a button.A companion DJI ebike app gives the rider customization control over assist levels and ride feel for each mode.Big batteries and fast chargingWhile light assist eMTBs have generally opted for <500Wh batteries and many full-power ebikes have expanded to >1000Wh, DJI strikes a balance in the middle. Their standard go-to is an 800Wh internal battery. But theres also a 600Wh option for building eMTBs that blur the boundaries between lightweight and full power. Whatever way the eMTB designer goes, DJI employs GaN 3x fast charging 1 tech in their chargers so you can charge your ebike quickly. DJI says their 12A/508W fast charger can bring the bigger 800Wh battery from 0% to 75% charge in just 90 minutes. An integrated interfaceAll the power, control, and range come together in a sleek package with a tidy 2 full-color touchscreen OLED display in the top tube. Sure, you can connect a smartphone and DJIs new Avinox ebike app. But its hard to argue with seamless simplicity on bikes these days.Oh, and a USB port so you can keep your phone charged as you ride, too!Added connected features include bike security, data recording, and sharing, assist parameter adjustments, and real-time bike status checking. And the Avinox system uses standard Bluetooth communication and two wireless remotes to move through all the functions at your fingertips.DJI Avinox ebike drive Availability & PricepointAs is pretty standard, you cant just buy an ebike drive system on its own without an ebike itself. So the first complete eMTB that will feature the new DJI Avinox ebike drive system is the Amflow PL. An independent upstart bike manufacturer incubated by DJI, Amflow just launched a carbon 150/160mm all-mountain ebike with the DJI system that will be available later this year in Q4 starting around 7000 and with complete weights as low as 19.2kg in a more expensive spec. Check out our separate coverage of the Amflow PL Carbon here.Beyond Amflow at launch, DJI confirms that they are in discussions with other established ebike manufacturers. And if the ride feel, torque, power, and weight claims stand up, wed bet a bunch of ebike makers will be jumping to stick a DJI AVinox motor in their eMTB frames. New Parlee Taos Gravel Bike is all about Traction
Hot on the heels of their Ouray all-road bike comes the Taos, a versatile gravel bike with the same monocoque nude carbon frame construction but a focus on delivering next-level traction.Inspired by the wide variety of terrain around Taos, New Mexico, their latest creation fits huge tires and uses a dropped-stay, heavily sloping frame design to soak up chatter and keep your wheels planted. It also replaces the Chebacco as their stock offering, though you can still get a full custom Z-series gravel frame if you want.An all-new frameLike the Ouray, the Taos frame is a full monocoque design, made in one piece in their new European partner factory, and comes with a waxed finish sans paint. This design gives them complete control over the entire bikes ride quality in ways that tube-to-tube or lugged construction cant. And they do it with such precision that every UD layer you see is exactly how it comes out of the mold, perfectly placed and absolutely functionalthere are no added cosmetic layers, finishing, bonding, overwraps, or filler.Which is why they offer it with a nude finish that has nothing but a durable wax coating over it. That makes it lighter, with a claimed average frame weight under 1kg, yet its tough enough to withstand the elements and a few knocks. Because its a gravel bike, high-impact zones are reinforced, and rubberized protective shields cover the bottom of the downtube near the BB and the chainstays.About that tractionWith the one-piece construction, Parlee is able to tune the carbon fiber used in the seat tube, top tube, and seat stays to be more compliant at the saddle than a typical gravel bike. They claim it has 20% more compliance at the saddle than is typical. While you feel that as more comfort, it also means the rear tire has more consistent contact with the ground, which translates to better traction as the wheel skips less. The Taos fits up to 700x50mm (2.0) tires, which maximizes the tire patch and volume, also aiding in grip and comfort. They say it all adds up to a bike that offers better traction than anything else on the market. Its also fastThe bottom half of the bike is stiff for efficient power transfer. Whether youre grinding up a climb, hammering for the finish, or just making the miles disappear as quickly as possible, itll make the most of all your watts.Subtle aero touches help with this. The top of the downtube is a subtler version of their wind tunnel-proven Recurve design, and all cables and wires are hidden inside the stem and frame for a full stealth look. Parlee isnt making any aero claims for the Taos, but its designed with single-day races like Unbound, BWR, etc., in mind.As such, it has three bottle cage mounts (two inside the front triangle, one underneath) and top tube bag mounts, plus their first-ever internal downtube storage compartment. But thats about it. You can strap more bags to it, but its not intended for fully-loaded bikepacking.and versatileThe Taos geometry is suspension corrected. Its fork has a 425mm axle-to-crown measurement, similar to modern gravel suspension forks. Add any 30-40mm fork you want and geometry barely changes.Keep it rigid and you can use the flip-chip dropout to change the fork offset from 45-51mm. While its billed as a gravel bike, Parlee knows many riders like their bikes to pull double duty, and this ones compatible with tires down to 70032. Change the fork offset to adjust the handling to suit your tire size and needs.Geometry & standardsThe Taos is offered in six frame sizes, each with the option for standard or tall head tube setups. This, along with full custom component builds for every bike based on your fit data, ensure almost every rider can find a perfect fit aboard the Taos. The bike comes with integrated headsets for stealth routing, and they use the common headset standards so you can use any common setup from FSA, ENVE, Token, Deda, PRO, etc. They also use a standard round seatpost and T47 BB. The front brake comes standard with a 160mm rotor as the smallest size, which lets you easily switch to a 180mm rotor without any special adapters. The rear brake sticks with the common 140/160 sizing.Spec overviewConstruction: One-piece, UD (uni-directional) carbon monocoque frame and forkDesign: All-road geometry with modular Flex-Fit systemTT Slope: Sloping, 15-21 degrees (size-specific)Tire Clearance: 32-50mm (measured)Seatpost: 31.6mm, round, 0mm or 25mm offset, replaceable external clampCabling: Full internal routing, electronic drivetrain onlyBottom Bracket: T47, internal, 85.5mm widthDrop Outs: 142mm thru-axle, UDH (Universal Derailleur Hanger) compatible, 140/160 rear rotorsF.
