The Cyclist schedule gods have obliged by providing the open goal of a little-known race called The Giro dItalia for my contextual background noise. With a passable number of my predictions not quite totally obliterated by Stage 6, Im feeling pretty sage. For anyone thinking about a little flutter, Id point you in Robyn and Ewans direction, whose crystal gazes rest on research and informed speculation, rather than the jewellery choices of the GC candidates.Elsewhere on the site, there is the usual spread laid on for the eyes of the inquisitive rider. To base layer or not to base layer when riding in the summer is the quiz weve pulled from the archive this week. Theres also an enlightening interview with Ralph Denk whose Bora-Hansgrohe team will soon be welcoming some bulls (red ones) into their china shop. Other big news this week included the launch of Monument Cycling TVs streaming service, which should provide a huge and welcome boost for British cycling, and kicks off with the Lincoln GP this weekend. And there is one more thing. Whats this in my bag? Oh, my own trumpet. How did it get there? And next to it: a link to Cyclists write-up of the Pan Celtic Race in 2023. Sorry, Ill only plug it once. Riding almost 2,500km in a week gives me (I hope) a tooting pass. This made-to-order ethos feeds into the companys environment-first approach. The latest, #EDIT003, launched at the end of April and has fabric design from abstract artist Remi Rough woven into the Audax and ultra-distance-focussed kit. Handily, its anything but rough and feels delightful against my fragile Celtic skin. This loud jersey has six pockets including an overlaid double-width vented pocket that can easily handle a hardback book if thats your bag and is made from 100% recycled materials. Kostme bills it as game for pretty much everything ride-wise, and its been working nicely for me in this hellacious season some people are referring to as spring. The accompanying cap is sporting similar vented panelling to the jersey, and at the back even has an elasticated sort of snapback band something you dont see every day.Buy now from Kostme (145)Tailfin Frame BagThree years in the making and announced with all the trappings of a landmark global political event (hats off to the comms team) the Tailfin Frame bag adds another staple to the Bristol brands armoury. (Im not West Country-biased I promise). Tailfin has already set the world of ultra luggage alight with its thru-axle-based posh pannier system that seems to have done for the domination of the seatpost bag. But it aint stopping there. So whats the big deal its just a frame bag right? Wrong my friend. As well as coming in nine sizes (with a handy online sizer), two different styles, an optional bottle dropper, being very protective of paintwork, and (obviously) totally waterproof, it also makes a mean cortado, loves cleaning, and will file your tax return for you if you post the figures through the zip hole. (Only some of this is true).Attend any ultra race or Audax this year and itll be a case of Tailfins everywhere and not a shark in sight. Im not sure why. The sight of vacant litres of air sparks possibility somewhere deep inside me. Probably for the same reason my house is full of brand-new, unblemished notebooks. The promise of the blank page and all those novels Ill never write. At least with the bags I do always end up using them, even If its just for moving house. The Apidura City Backpack 20l didnt stay vacant for long. Its commuter-ready and fully waterproof, so you can rest easy that your laptop and your emergency layers are going to stay dry no matter how religious the downpour gets. There are some handy internal pockets, including a zipped flat section, and theres an external zipper that has a neat key holder concealed within. They also do a messenger bag in the same material, which is worth checking out if one of your shoulders is particularly valuable or youre just a massive diva. Its essential that you brake before careering over the edge of a ravine; its not essential that you read a novel about suburban families murdering their neighbours. But I will say that without actually qualifying as essential Oliver Frankin-Walliss book detailing our relationship with rubbish and waste is a staggering bit of reportage. From second-hand clothes markets in Africa, to landfill sites in India, and rows and rows of incinerators and oozing nuclear dumps far closer to home, the sheer scale of crap that we produce, chuck out, and magic out of sight is utterly nauseating and slightly panic-inducing.Franklin-Wallis lets us know, with poise and no little optimism, that the bin is not any kind of final destination. It is actually a smelly portal to a global kaleidoscope of trash that no one really wants to deal with. (Oh and that compostable plastic cellophane stuff isnt properly compostable. - BIKERUMOR.COMThe New Project N+1 Prototype from Thesis Bike has Adaptable-Geometry For Riding It AllThats right, the minds at Thesis Bike have developed a bike that transforms from a fast and responsive road bike to a stable and capable gravel bike. They say that code name Project N+1, will do everything in-between as well. Could it be the last drop bar bike youll ever need? With classic road aesthetics, generous tire clearance, and extensive component compatibility, it looks like a thoughtful design to me. Lets go over some of the thinking and design behind the Thesis prototype. (Photos/Thesis Bike)When compared to road bikes, gravel bikes will have slacker head tube angles, increased fork offsets, longer wheelbases, bigger tires, and dropped bottom brackets. The components and fit are similar, but the differences in fit and positioning, handling, and tire clearance meant choosing a bike for the different terrains. Choosing between a blended all-road bike, a partially-adjustable bike that compromises some geometry for others, or an entire stable of single-purpose bikes. This is part of what gave rise to the belief that the optimal number of bicycles is always one more than you currently have N+1.What if One Bike Could Be ManyThat was the inspiration behind Project N1, the code-name for Thesis effort to create the first bicycle that adapts quickly and completely from road to gravel and everything in between.Dropouts are slid down and forward for Road modeRotate, Stretch, DropThesis Project N1 prototype can switch from gravel geometry to road in just a matter of minutes with nothing more than a hex wrench. The rider loosens Thesis unique, diagonal-sliding dropouts when swapping wheels, completely transforming the bikes character. Dropouts are slid up and back for Gravel modeFor gravel the rider slides the axle up and back, slackening the head tube, increasing the wheelbase, and dropping the bottom bracket. Thus allowing for increased stability and the use of bigger tires. Tires clearance is up to 700x51mm or 650bx57mm with a 68mm road bottom bracket for chain line and q-factor, without reverting to dropped chainstays. Flippin The ChipThe finishing of the geometry transformation is the flipping of the forks flip-chip. The fork is currently still under development. Flipping the chip will move the axle 10mm away from the caliper, extending the forks axle-to-crown measurement, and further slackening the head angle. At the same time, it allows the fork offset to be corrected and the front center to be increased. What about the 10mm discrepancy at the caliper? Thesis suggests utilizing a 160mm rotor on the road wheelset and a 180mm on the gravel wheelset. This will eliminate the need to move the caliper when flipping the chip and swapping stuff over.Thesis Head of Brand, Sam Jackson had this to say: Figuring out how to make the swap between modes simple and approachable for novice riders with limited mechanical knowledge was essential to the success of the design. Were happy to say that its incredibly easy to switch the bike between gravel and road setups; going from end to end on the rear sliders completely transforms the bike without any need to tinker with the brake caliper. This is truly a do it all bike that people will be able to swap between a road and gravel bike as frequently as they want to, enabling an immense amount of latitude within one bike. The idea was to vary the handling from Land Cruiser to Lamborghini, and without a doubt it delivers. The Flippin DifferenceProject N+1 Frame HighlightsThreaded T47 68mm BBStraight 44mm head tubeRound 27.2 seatpost secured by a traditional collarFuture-proof UDH & Transmission-compatible dropout systemMicro-adjustment screws the rear dropoutsCompatibility with 1x/2x mechanical & electronic, internally-geared hub, & single-speed drivetrainsSupport for fenders, racks, dynamos, wired lights, droppers as well asPartial-internal, full-internal, & full-external (fork-only) routing.Pricing for the Thesis Project N+1 has yet to be announced.
