- IRISHCYCLE.COMDublin bicycle users reminded to Light up your BikeThe Dublin Cycling Campaign, supported by the Dublin City Council and the National Transport Authority, is reminding Dubliners to light up their bikes. The annual awareness initiative reminds cyclists of the legal requirement to light up with a red rear and white or yellow front light during lighting-up hours, which runs from 30 minutes after sunset until 30 minutes before sunrise. People who do not could risk a 40 on-the-spot fine.As happens every year, volunteers from the Dublin Cycling Campaign will hand out free sets of bike lights at a number of locations around the city in the next few weeks. This will start tomorrow at the Donnybrook Greenway between 4-5pm, with further times and locations to be shared on the campaigns social media channels.Lord Mayor of Dublin, James Geoghegan, who cycles and is due to launch the initiative tomorrow, said: Cycling is such a great way to get around the city, but as the winter closes in, its so important that cyclists light up. So if youre taking to the roads on two wheels, please check that your lights are working properly.Una Morrison, chairperson of the Dublin Cycling Campaign, said, We are delighted to support this initiative. We encourage all cyclists to ensure check their bike lights are working and maximise their visibility during the darker autumn and winter months. Cyclists must play their part. She added: We also encourage all road users to increase vigilance of more vulnerable road users at low visibility times like dusk and dawn to ensure all our journeys are as safe and enjoyable as possible.Lucy Hayes, Dublin City Councils walking and cycling officer, said: Dublin City Council is keen to support cycling as a year-round fun and safe active travel option. Its essential that along with the improved infrastructure and greenways for safer and more accessible cycling, cyclists must make sure they light up their bikes, both for each other and for other road users, as the darker evenings and mornings close in.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 216 Visualizações
- BIKERUMOR.COMCDuro Teases Czech Wound Carbon Gravel Bike, Starts Shipping Epona Enduro MTBAt Bespoked in Dresden over the weekend, Czech robot-wound carbon bike maker CDuro teased us with an all-new gravel bike prototype. Designed as an all-rounder, this prototype gravel bike highlights their unique automated carbon tube & joint manufacturing construction, showcasing every individual wrap of carbon that makes up its structure.Plus, at the same time, CDuro also announced their carbon Epona enduro mountain bike which we first shared with you last summer, but had been following for several years through its development is now available for purchase!CompoTechs CDuro Czech robot-made carbon bicycles(Photos/ Cory Benson)We first know CompoTech for their unique in-house-made machine-wound carbon fiber tubing. A carbon tube tech designed from the ground up to better handle the real bending and torsion forces that bike frame tubes actually encounter vs. conventional filament winding, these tubes are remarkably strong and impact resistant, even when made incredibly lightweight. Its the same tech weve been riding in Festka road and gravel bikes for more than a decade.I even got a first-hand look into CompoTechs in-house Czech carbon tube production back in 2017, together with Festka as they were preparing to make tubes for my own custom One Gravel bike itself the prototype that would become Festkas Rover. Although everything was so super secret at the time, so I really wasnt allowed to share what was happening inside their factory.I did in fact, already catch a glimpse of an early prototype that CompoTech was working on, which would become their CDuro Epona enduro bike which itself is now available.CompoTech Integrated Loop Technology drives CDuro bikes developmentBut CompoTechs latest and most advanced automated manufacturing technology is really what fuels them to create their CDuro Bikes brand. As a manufacturer, the vast majority of CompoTechs carbon products go into industrial applications where their light weight, stiffness, and vibration damping make them outperform conventional metal parts or other composites the engineers behind the brand like to ride bikes. So while high-performance carbon tubes were a great starting point for tube-to-tube bike builders like Festka, it was the automated manufacturing of joints between tubes that allowed CDuro to create its own bikes. This new Integrated Loop Technology (ILT) takes automated carbon tube production to a new level with an automated integral joining tech that lets a robot join the tubes. That way CDuro first makes individual lightweight carbon tubes with a more conventional filament winding loom attached to a spinning spindle. Then for example, they cut & miter a downtube, bottom bracket shell, and headtube to be assembled as one. And a robotic arm joins the tubes together, wrapping longitudinal fibers over the joints and along the full length of the tubes to complete the structural needs of the assembly. And finally, the robot overwinds the tube junctions to create the desired tension in the long fibers and lock in the joint before wrapping it all in tape to squeeze out any excess resin and finalize the structure.ILT carbon up close: before & afterThis ILT process allows CompoTech to fully automate the creation of the key frame subassemblies of both their first bike the single-pivot full-suspension Epona enduro mountain bike and this more traditional diamond frame gravel bike prototype. In that way, CDuro machine-winds the bikes backbone as a single element. And then, they simply slide other tubes in and bond them into place.CompoTech show how the downtube assembly of the Epona is made in that video above, but dont reveal exactly what happens in the next step. However, that long robot arm suggests much bigger assemblies could be rotated through the automated production. Plus, CDuro describes the complete front triangle of the Epona mountain bike and the front triangle of this gravel prototype as being made in one piece.CDuro robot-wound carbon all-rounder Gravel bike prototypeSo the ILT process creates a perfectly automated joint between tubes, but also the continuous longitudinal fibers that reinforce the woven structure of the main frame tubes. And probably the thing that I love most about the CDuro bikes is that nothing is hidden. While traditional hand-laid carbon always has some human imperfections (like you can see on this prototype gravel bikes seatstay and chainstay junctions), the automated fiber placement is perfectly where it was designed. Every fiber precisely placed by robots. The finished product is a strangely skeletal or even industrial aesthetic, at times even looking unfinished. But thats exactly because CDuros robots only place the carbon fiber where they need to from a structural perspective. In my mind, thats the beauty of these bikes. Every fiber of carbon is placed there with intention. Nothing extra. The result on this as-yet-unnamed carbon CDuro Gravel bike prototype is that the overwrapped ILT joints remain open. On their mountain bike, they seal these off to keep out mud and debris. But CDuro still arent sure if they would leave the gravel bike more open.Carbon tube connections up close CDuro does not entirely automate construction of the prototype gravel bike, though. Robots wind the (mostly) round tubes and create the main front triangle joints. But CDuro CNC-machines aluminum dropouts at the rear, which they then directly bond into their tubes. And then, they connect those chainstays and seatstays to the front triangle with conventional tube mitering and hand-wrapped carbon overlays.Officially, this is still completely a gravel prototype, and CDuro does not have any real final details of an estimated availability timeline for the new bike. They do describe the gravel bike more as an all-rounder. So it will have gravel geometry inspired by the mountain bikers who have designed it. And while optimizing weight, CDuro prioritize durability over the absolute lightest weight possible for this gravel bike project.CDuro expects tire clearance in the 45-50mm range. Cable routing will be fully integrated up front, and it will be UDH-compatible. And it likely will add more bottle cage mounts than you see here, but as CDuro say, they would rather cut as few holes into the middle of their carbon tubes, as possible. 100% made-in-Czechia, complete gravel frames will probably sell for somewhere between 2500-3000 in a handful of stock sizes, starting with raw matte carbon finishes being the most affordable. But well have to wait at least until next spring to get a more concrete timeline.CDuro Epona carbon enduro mountain bikeBut, if you are looking for a unique carbon enduro mountain bike woven by Czech robots, you can already order one of these CDuro Epona frames today. We first featured the single-pivot Epona last summer at Eurobike where it was sporting this upside-down carbon Intend fork. Ive also seen it around the Czech enduro racing scene and in line at my local bikepark, piloted by Czech enduro racer Dominika Adamcov. This is the versatile and capable mountain bike that CompoTechs engineers wanted to build from the start. CDuro name the Epona after a local technical rocky trail that descends from the highest mountain just above CDuros factory in Suice, at the foot of the umava mountains on the CZ/DE border.CDuro describe the concept of the bike as simple, a strong, stable, lightweight carbon, and straightforward single-pivot enduro frame platform. They are not trying to reinvent mountain bike suspension or even geometry design just to reimagine it with their unique automated carbon construction.Generally, CDuro builds the Epona up as either a mullet bike with a longer 65mm stroke shock for 160mm of rear wheel travel. Or go full 29er with a 60mm shock stroke for 150mm of rear travel. But for the smallest S-sized bikes, CDuro reduces rear wheel travel to 137mm with a 55mm stroke shock for lower standover with either a 29 or 27.5 rear wheel. In any case, CDuro recommends matching it to a 29 front wheel and 160-170mm of fork travel. The bike comes in 4 stock sizes (S-XL) and features pretty standard capable geometry for a lightweight enduro bike. You get a slack 64 head angle, steep 79 seat angle, relatively long 450mm chainstays, and medium-long Reach figures.Tech detailsCompoTechIntegrated Loop Technology robot-wound carbon front trianglehi-mod carbon frame 100% EU-made at a claimed 2.2kg without shock27.5 mullet 160mm or full 29er 150mm of rear single-pivot travel on sealed bearingsthreaded or BB92 PressFit bottom bracketUDH with 12x148mm Boost spacing180 post-mount disc brakeinternal brake routing, plus optional internal wired 31.6mm dropper seatpost or derailleur routingEpona Pricing & availabilityCDuro produces the Epona in small batches in 4 stock frame sizes (S-XL), but with each bike dialed in for the individual buyer. The Epona sells as a frame-only for 3860. And with a 50% deposit to start the build process, it takes about 8-9 weeks before they will get the frame to you to build up. Pretty much every Epona I have seen built up in person has featured premium Intend suspension, but CDuro is happy to help you find a more reasonably priced build, as well. In fact, Bikerumor is in talks with CDuro to test one with a more conventional build kit on our local trails in the coming months.CDuroBikes.comThe post CDuro Teases Czech Wound Carbon Gravel Bike, Starts Shipping Epona Enduro MTB appeared first on Bikerumor.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 205 Visualizações

- BIKESNOBNYC.COMColor Me NonplussedSometimes I wake up in a cold sweat worried that the cycling industry is not doing enough to save the planet:Like, youd think making bikesstill the most efficient mode of transportation humanity has every devisedwould be enough, right?Apparently though 65 percent of people who answered some kind of survey do in fact want to see the bike industry engage in climate advocacy:The story says only but 65% sounds like a lot to methough as someone whod be willing to pay a premium for them to shut up about it once and for all I realize Im biased. No offense to John Burke, of course:People give him a hard time, but I like that John Burke thinks he can fix everything:Granted, I havent read the book, but I think its cute hes always making earnest to-do lists:I dont know what a single one of those 16 detailed solutions is, but I find the utter futility of the whole endeavor oddly endearing. As for the video, its also basically a list, though he starts off with a story about riding with Rory Kennedy 10 years ago:Wait, he believes in climate change and the moon landing?!? Whats next, Burke? Evolution?!?Anyway, he goes on to explain that she told him in 10 years this is what people (presumably the ones who are left after the planet climate changes us to death) will be saying:Keep in mind this was ten years ago, and nobody today is speaking in the past tense. In fact, I even checked the Climate Clock:And according to them weve still got four whole years leftmaybe even more if we get more women in parliaments:Why is more women in parliaments good for the planet? I have no idea. As far as I can tell the climate is basically an angry god that must be appeased. But Im not going to argue with any of it lest someone accuse me of being a climate change denier. Now, what Im getting here is that 10 years ago Rory Kennedy told John Burke we have 10 years, so he immediately started doing some climate stuff at Trek, and now here we are 10 years later, nobodys speaking in the past tense, and we still have four more years even according to the whackadoodles who run the Climate Clock:[Greta gets whatever she wants. Thats what makes Greta Greta.]So from all of this we can safely conclude that John Burke is taking credit for single-handedly saving the planet.Nice job, John Burke. That was a close one.So how did he save the planet? Im not sure; I skipped through the video, but I think he started shipping bikes in smaller boxes. Though it is worth noting that 10 years ago Trek had only one bicycle that required a battery:[From here.]And now theyve got a metric assload of bikes that require batteries:Like, basically theyve electrified like half their catalog. And thats not counting all the non-e-bikes that still need batteries just to shift. Even a 105-level road bike needs to be plugged in these days.(Here is an honest question: is a Trek T80+ still viable today? Can you get replacement batteries for it? I really have no idea.)So I ask you ladies and gentlemen: How did we manage take the most efficient machine ever created and undermine that efficiency by putting a bunch of gratuitous batteries all over it that have to be mined, all while congratulating ourselves for all the things were been doing to save the planet? And yes, I get itthe batteries require more resources than the regular bikes, but thats offset by the fact that e-bikes are getting people out of their cars. Oh, waitIm not saying e-bikes havent become a meaningful part of the transportation landscape; all Im saying is that we just keep driving more and more no matter what. See that dip? Basically, locking people in their homes and telling them theyre going to die is about it is the only way to keep people in this country from driving. So Id love to congratulate the bicycle industry for all its doing to save the planet, and Ill absolutely do so just as soon as all these companies announce that theyll no longer produce bikes that require batteries and that theyll cease helmet production immediately.Fake fact I just made up: 32% of that plastic will be bicycle helmets. And in other sustainability news, I completely missed that Vittorias making a new tire out of food and garbage:If they can make a good tire out of old crap then that is genuinely fantastic. Still, I really dont want to live in a world where people treat riding on black tires like wearing a fur coat:Also, while the raw materials may be different, weve ridden down this road on over-inflated tires before:Remember the colored tire craze of the late 90s and early aughts? You can guess who pointed out the folly of this at the time:I admit to not knowing much about tire compounds, but I do know tires are mostly black again, and Im guessing this is why. Continental used sell colored tires and market its Activated Silica Compound, but now their tires are black and theyre pushing the soot content instead:I guess black soot doesnt have the same ring to it.As for the new Vittorias, I guess theyre still being tested:That seems like something youd want to know. But the color matches the dirt, which should make them a hit on the gravel scene.Spoeaking of gravel, a reader informs me that the New York Times says this is the best book:And that its like riding a bike on gravel:Slippery and nerve-racking? Mustve been using those recycled tires.Wonder what pressure they were running0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 232 Visualizações
- WWW.BIKERADAR.COMNew Wahoo Elemnt Ace leaked is this the worlds first bike computer with an integrated aero sensor?A new Wahoo bike computer, called the Elemnt Ace, has leaked on Reddit.According to images shared by Reddit user anotherwahooligan (who claims to have purchased three units on eBay), the Wahoo Elment Ace looks to be a new high-end model. The leaked images reveal a large, 3.8in touchscreen a first for a Wahoo bike computer and detail a number of sensors, including a gyroscope, accelerometer and wind sensor, alongside an altimeter. We suspect these sensors could enable the Elemnt Ace to calculate a riders aerodynamic drag, most likely in conjunction with data from a power meter (such as Wahoos own Powrlink Zero power meter pedals) and tyre rolling resistance data inputted by the rider. If so, this would make the Wahoo Elemnt Ace the first mainstream bike computer to feature integrated aero measurement capabilities. The leaked images only show the product packaging and a digital render of the computer itself. Nevertheless, the box reveals plenty about the expected specifications, so lets dig into those.Wahoos most powerful bike computerReddit users have leaked what appears to be a new flagship bike computer from Wahoo. Reddit / HenkStubbeAccording to the specs listed on the rear of the box, the Elemnt Ace will be Wahoos most powerful bike computer.Compared to Wahoos other bike computers, the Elment Roam V2 and Element Bolt V2, the Elemnt Ace looks set to receive a major upgrade to its display. As well as being substantially larger, the screen will be a 'next gen TFT' (a kind of LCD display) capable of displaying 16 million colours and supporting touch operation. In contrast, the Elemnt Roam V2 previously Wahoos most expensive bike computer featured a 2.7in screen capable of displaying only 64 colours.Despite this, the box says the Elemnt Ace will feature '30+ hours of battery life', alongside 64GB of internal memory and dual-band GPS.As is becoming de rigueur for electronic bike peripherals, the Elemnt Ace also looks set to get USB-C charging. The first bike computer with a built-in aero sensor? The box reveals much about the Elemnt Ace's potential specs. Reddit / anotherwahooliganIf the Elemnt Ace can measure wind speed and altitude with enough precision, this data could be combined with speed, power and rolling resistance data from external sources to calculate a riders aerodynamic drag (or at least an approximation of it that allows for comparative testing of equipment or riding positions).Of course, it remains to be seen whether Wahoos integrated sensors can compete with dedicated aero measurement devices from third-party brands in terms of accuracy and repeatability in varying wind conditions.Previously, riders wanting to use drag-measuring peripherals such as the Notio Konect, Aerosensor Aerodynamic Cycling System or Body Rocket system, have had to rely on Garmin bike computers and Garmin's Connect IQ app ecosystem. This allows third-party brands to create their own apps for Garmins range of compatible bike computers, whereas Wahoos bike computers have always been more of a closed ecosystem. While the Elemnt Ace may have some measurement capabilities of its own built in, could the software designed for this purpose also open up compatibility with third-party peripherals for capturing more data?An Edge 1050 competitor? Will the Wahoo Elemnt Ace compete with the Garmin Edge 1050? Reddit / anotherwahooliganGiven the addition of a new, larger screen and extensive new features, the Wahoo Elemnt Ace looks set to compete with Garmins recently launched flagship bike computer, the Edge 1050.As such, the box says the Elemnt Ace features a 'premium aluminium mount' and an 'audio speaker', which can perhaps act as a digital bike bell like on the Edge 1050.At the time of writing, we dont know when the Wahoo Elemnt Ace will launch or how much it will cost, although an official launch may not be too far off if product packaging and specs are leaking. As always, well bring you more information as soon as its available.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 293 Visualizações
