AiRO VAYU Uses AI-based Physics Model for Real-Time Aero Testing in Bike Fits
AiRO has launched VAYU, a new AI-based physics model that predicts a riders aerodynamic drag and airflow in near real time. The big change is speed. With the previous AiRO platform, every position change required a separate CFD simulation. These took roughly six minutes to return an aerodynamic result. VAYU cuts that to under a second, letting a fitter move a rider and watch the drag number update on screen almost immediately. This changes the way the system can be used during an actual fit.(Photos/AiRO)Instead of making a position change, waiting for the CFD result, then moving on to the next idea, fitters can now cycle through far more positions, helmet choices, and setup tweaks during the same session.AiRO says VAYU is roughly 12,000 times faster per aerodynamic question, with some interactive position changes updating in as little as 0.2 milliseconds. From CFD Wait Time to Live FeedbackAiRO already used a riders 3D body scan, riding position, and helmet to estimate aerodynamic drag, or CdA. The limitation was time.Six minutes isnt long in isolation. However, it adds up quickly when a fitter wants to compare multiple helmet positions, bar heights, elbow widths, or torso angles. A session can run out of time before you run out of things worth testing.VAYU removes that bottleneck. The fitter can adjust the rider and see the aerodynamic consequences almost immediately.VAYU takes AiRO to the next level, said AiRO founder and CEO Ingmar Jungnickel. Instead of waiting minutes for each answer, a fitter can move the rider and see the aerodynamic consequence almost instantly.Trained on More Than 30,000 CFD SimulationsAiRO says it trained VAYU on more than 30,000 CFD simulations. These include roughly 6,900 real customer cases generated through more than 130 AiRO fitters in 26 countries.AiRO believes that represents the largest dataset of airflow simulations built around real cyclists, and says VAYU is the first AI physics model developed specifically for sports aerodynamics.AiRO also provided some testing numbers. Across 101 rider-position comparisons, VAYU selected the faster of two positions in 97 cases, with drag changes resolved to within roughly 1%.Helmet testing was similarly strong. In 74 certified helmet swaps, VAYU selected the faster helmet 72 times. AiRO says both misses involved drag differences of less than 1.5%.The model is also deterministic, meaning the same inputs should return the same output every time rather than varying from run to run. That matters for fitters who are looking at small changes and trying to decide whether a position is genuinely faster or just statistical noise.Aero Testing Without the Wind Tunnel BillTraditionally, serious aero testing has meant one of two things: wind tunnel time or specialist CFD work. Neither is especially convenient.Wind tunnel pricing can run $500 or more per hour, and traditional CFD analysis can take so long that it doesnt really fit into a normal bike-fit appointment.VAYU is meant to bring some of that aero decision-making into the same room where saddle height, reach, bar position, and rider comfort are already being sorted out. That doesnt make it a wind tunnel replacement in the purest sense, but it does make aerodynamic testing far more accessible to riders who arent WorldTour pros or national-team athletes. More importantly, it allows aero to become part of the fitting process instead of something done separately after the position is already mostly locked in.More Positions, More Helmets, More Useful QuestionsThe speed increase could be especially useful when the changes being tested are small. Move the riders elbows in a little. Lower the hands. Raise the front end. Swap helmets. Move the head. Change torso angle. On the old system, every one of those questions came with another several-minute wait. With VAYU, the idea is to keep testing while the rider is still on the bike. That should also make it easier to balance aerodynamics against a position someone can actually hold. The fastest position for 30 seconds isnt necessarily the fastest position after three hours if the rider cant stay there. Real-time feedback gives the fitter more room to chase both.AiRO VAYU AvailabilityVAYU begins rolling out to all AiRO fitters on November 4.AiRO says the update will be included in every existing plan at no additional cost. Fitters on the companys Pro-level plan will also receive unlimited simulations and Digital Aero Twins. For riders, the biggest change should be simple: more aero testing during the same fit session, with far less staring at the screen while you wait for the next CFD result. And if youve ever spent a fit appointment wondering whether that slightly lower, narrower, uglier position is actually faster, VAYU should make it easier to find out before your coffee gets cold.
