Its very versatile for a track bike. It was unofficially dubbed a tracklocross bike because it had big tire clearance, something you never saw on a track bike. It was also one of Surlys first models. In its marvelous 23-year run, it became a go-to choice for bike messengers and commuters alike. The Steamrollers popularity is likely due to its steel frame, the simplicity of a singlespeed, and the 700c x 38mm tire clearance, which allowed the rider to fit enough tire in the frame to handle city streets without fuss.Surly officially discontinued the Steamroller back in 2023.
