- WWW.BIKERADAR.COMChinese brand Star Union challenges premium brake makers with Suhr R740 stoppersChinese brand Star Union has introduced its new premium brake line-up, under the name Suhr. The new Suhr R740 brakes are made from CNC-machined 7075-T6 aluminium alloy and feature cooling fins built into the 4-piston caliper. The brand says the brakes, which were on show at Eurobike, are purpose-built for downhill and enduro bikes, with the caliper featuring 16mm pistons. Tool-free adjustment for reach is used on the lever, but there isn't any contact adjust as on other high-end brakes. The calipers feature a refined finish with cooling fins on the main body. Nick Clark / Our Media This isn't something ubiquitous on top-spec mountain bike brakes, with Trickstuff's 1,300 Maxima brakes only featuring reach adjustment. Suhr says the brakes weigh 299.3g for the front with a 1,000mm hose, and 318.5g for the rear with a 1,800mm hose. An aluminium lever blade is used. Nick Clark / Our Media Mineral oil is used in the system and stainless steel-backed carbon ceramic pads are employed in the caliper. An anodised finish features on the lever and caliper, with black, silver and purple available. The brakes are priced at $450, which seems competitive with other premium stoppers. - WWW.BIKERADAR.COMLive Tour de France coverage to be broadcast on S4C and iPlayerS4C has announced that it has secured the rights to broadcast this year's Tour de France, and the live-stream will also be available on BBC iPlayer. While it comes late, with the race starting on Saturday, the news will be welcomed by those wanting to watch the Tour de France in the UK without having to pay for a TNT Sports subscription. S4C will sublicense the coverage from TNT Sports, who have exclusive rights, with its own Welsh-language commentary being broadcast live. The presenting team includes Rhodri Gomer, Peredur ap Gwynedd, Gruff Lewis and Manon Lloyd. How to watch the Tour de France 2026: global options for live TV and streaming with stage start times Select stages The start and finish of the race will be available for free. BERNARD PAPON via Getty Images S4C will only broadcast select stages live, including stages 1, 2, 3, 19, 20 and 21. Stage 18 will also be covered exclusively on S4C Clic, BBC iPlayer and S4C Chwaraeons YouTube channel. Its the 13th year in a row that the Welsh language channel has covered the race, and it says it is in negotiations to cover the Tour de France in 2027, when it begins in the UK and passes through Wales for the first time in its history. Alongside its live coverage, highlights will also be available via S4C and its digital platforms. S4C wont be the only place to watch free Tour de France highlights in the UK this summer, with 5 showing a daily highlights show. ITV 4 lost its rights to broadcast the race after Warner Bros. Discovery Sports Europe secured the Tours exclusive live broadcast rights. Presenter Peredur ap Gwynedd said: I am very happy that S4C is broadcasting the Tour de France once again, for the 13th year in a row. It's pretty bonkers that we've broadcast the race since 2014. And of course, with a stage of the Tour taking place in Wales next year, the word 'exciting' doesn't even come close to how I feel about the future!0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 33 Visualizações
- WWW.BIKERADAR.COMThe most direct access to Campagnolo carbon: new Zonda wheels hit lowest price point as company continues to reinvent itselfThe new Campagnolo Zonda wheelset continues the Italian groupset and component makers process of reinvention, with the latest addition to its line-up hitting a lower price point for all-road riding. If youve paid attention to Campagnolos launches recently, this might not come as a surprise. When the company released Record 13 in April, it said the new groupset spanned road, gravel and all-road bikes. It is also more affordable than the brands Super Record groupset by 1,400. At 1,420, the Zonda wheelset costs 870 less than the Bora X gravel wheelsets. Campagnolo says the new wheels offer the most direct access to Campagnolos carbon wheel range. Still Campagnolo The Campagnolo Zonda wheelset is said to focus on what truly matters. Campagnolo Campagnolo says the Zonda wheelset manages to provide access to its range of carbon wheels not by giving up details but by focusing on what truly matters. The Zonda wheels have a high-modulus unidirectional carbon rim thats 50mm deep with Campagnolos signature C-Lux direct-mould finish. The 25mm hooked internal rim can support tubeless tyres from 29mm to 40mm wide. Campagnolo says the wheels focus on the same engineering philosophy that defines all its products: premium materials, complete manufacturing control and lasting reliability. The hub features Campagnolo's signature G3 lacing pattern, using an asymmetric spoke layout to improve lateral stiffness and deliver immediate power transfer. The adjustable Cup & Cone bearing system reflects Campagnolo's long-standing philosophy of prioritising long-term performance. It preserves the smooth rolling feel that has always distinguished Campagnolo wheels, even after thousands of kilometres, the company says. Like Record 13, the wheels are manufactured entirely in Europe. A new generation Campagnolo says there is a new generation of cyclists. Campagnolo Although BikeRadars Warren Rossiter says we can leave all-road behind now endurance bikes have stopped flirting with gravel, Campagnolo appears committed to the label. Thats partly because of how it sees bikes changing. Campagnolo says: There was a time when every bike had a clearly defined purpose. A road bike for asphalt. A gravel bike for dirt. Today, that distinction no longer exists. All-road isn't about finding a compromise between road and gravel. It's about designing a wheel that feels equally at home on both, it continues. Campagnolo says this in-between category also suits new riders that sit between its performance road wheels, such as the Bora Ultra and Bora WTO, and gravel wheels, including the Bora X. Between these two worlds lies a new generation of cyclists. Riders who start on the road but don't want to stop when the road changes, it says. That's exactly where Zonda Carbon All Road belongs. A wheel that preserves the dynamic feel of a true Campagnolo road wheel while adding the versatility demanded by modern cycling. Making Campagnolo more accessible Campagnolo's Record 13 groupset launched in April. Campagnolo With its recent launches, it seems Campagnolo is aiming to make its products more accessible. Lower prices and greater versatility should in theory open the once-boutique brand up to more riders. The company has had a rocky time in recent years. Its Super Record Wireless groupset, launched in 2023, received a lacklustre response. The groupset appeared to be falling behind its competitors, and for the price of 4,499. This had arguably been a long time coming. Campagnolo positioned itself as a high-end brand in 2007. Ensuing world events and struggles in the cycling industry did little to help its ambitions, with the historic brand hitting financial troubles late last year. But the release of Super Record 13 and Super Record 13 X for 1x gravel and all-road bikes in 2025, and then the launch of Record 13 in April, means Campagnolo is firmly back in the conversation.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 47 Visualizações
- WWW.BIKERADAR.COMBreitlings Top Time B01 Eddy Merckx is an homage to the greatest cyclist of all timeBreitling has revealed the Top Time B01 Eddy Merckx timepieces, an homage to the greatest cyclist of all time. Breitling CEO Jean-Marc Pontrou says: Eddy Merckx is the greatest cyclist of all time. His record speaks for itself. These watches capture that drive, that constant push to go further, faster, and push limits. The watch is said to honour Merckxs domination of professional cycling. Nicknamed The Cannibal, Merckx clocked 525 victories during this career. This included 11 Grand Tours, 19 Monuments and three World Championships. He won the Tour de France five times and recorded 96 days in the yellow jersey. The Breitling Top Time B01 Eddy Merckx The watch comes with a stainless steel mesh bracelet or leather strap (pictured). Breitling The Breitling Top Time B01 Eddy Merckx encapsulates these victories through several details. The Top Time itself was introduced in the 1960s, when Merckx began his career, as a line of racing watches, designed to capture the eras spirit of speed, style and freedom. The new Eddy Merckx edition has a yellow dial to reflect the champions Tour de France success. Contrasting subdials in the collections signature squircle shape bring clarity and edge, echoing the visual language of race timing and performance, Breitling says. Eddy Merckx racing in an individual time trial at the 1970 Tour de France, which he would go on to win. Rolls Press / Getty Images 'One of 525' is etched on the caseback to mark his total number of victories (which were also honoured by the recent Eddy Merckx 525R). 'Eddy Merckx Tribute' is written on the open caseback and Merckxs signature can be found at 6 oclock. The 41mm watch is powered by Breitlings Manufacture Caliber 01, and it is self-winding with a 70-hour power reserve. The watch has either a calfskin leather strap with a folding clasp or a stainless steel mesh bracelet with butterfly clasp. Not the first cycling watch from Breitling The Breitling Top Time B01 Eddy Merckx watches. Breitling The new Top Time B01 Eddy Merckx isnt the first cycling watch from Breitling. The Swiss watchmaker released the Top Time Coppi and Top Time Bartali editions last year, which were inspired by one of cyclings most iconic rivalries. Breitling also says its relationship to the sport extends back to the 19th century, when the company created cycling-oriented stopwatches. In the 1930s, it created a timing apparatus that was used for cycling races. Breitling hasn't confirmed the cost of its latest watch, but we doubt it will cost anything like as much as the Colnago and Richard Mille million-dollar watch that launched earlier this week. Recently, we also saw Bravur release the Grand Tour Sprinter, which celebrates cyclings fastest finishers, and a collaboration with Zwift.0 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 43 Visualizações
- WWW.BIKERADAR.COMThis folding helmet can protect your head in under 10 secondsFolding helmets offer an interesting solution for space-starved commuters looking to keep the head protected on short rider. On display at Eurobike 2026, Seira's folding helmet looks to fit the bill well, with the design incorporating a folding mechanism that is retained in place by a Boa-style dial. It looks like the brand has taken inspiration from the natural world, with the helmet featuring an armadillo-like design. The helmet appears to be easier to fit into a backpack compared to other folding designs. Nick Clark / Our Media The helmet comes in two sizes, M and L, and is made from a high-tenacity polyester fabric, EPS and polycarbonate. The open, or spread, size of the L helmet is 345x445x53mm, and it weighs 460g, so it should easily fit into backpacks. The brand doesn't claim much in the way of safety features, though portions on the side of the helmet ensure a snug fit. There are vents in the helmet to enable airflow while you're riding. Nick Clark / Our Media Seira says the design enables various patterns to be printed on the shell, and is looking at supplying the helmet to micro mobility companies to add safety to their fleet. Folding or unfolding the helmet takes under 10 seconds, with straps and a Boa-style dial keeping it in place. - WWW.BIKERADAR.COM"It changes what's possible in every race situation" new Giant Revolt Advanced SL is one of the lightest and fastest gravel bikes you can buyGiant and Cadexs engineering teams came together on the new Advanced SL project to create not just a frameset with a selection of components. Instead, they set out to create a "complete speed system". The frame, fork, one-piece aero cockpit, wheels and new 45mm tyres were developed, tested and tuned to work together to create a pure gravel race bike. According to Giant, the new system weighs in 288g lighter and reduces resistance by 18.99 watts over the previous-generation Revolt Advanced Pro. Giant claims the new Revolt is one of the lightest and aerodynamically efficient gravel race bikes available. As part of the new bike's development, Giant brought on board Cole Paton, three-time top-five finisher at the Life Time Grand Prix, and two-time Australian gravel national champion Brendan Johnston. Both have already raced a prototype of the Revolt at major races, including Unbound. At the level were racing now, every system on the bike has to work together, says Paton. Theres no room for compromise. "The Revolt Advanced SL is the first gravel bike Ive ever ridden that feels like it was 100 percent engineered for the demands we face. The aero advantage, the way it carries speed over rough terrain, it changes whats possible in every race situation. "The demands of the sport are higher than ever" new Liv Devote Advanced SL is fully focused on gravel racing Cadex's new Max CXR gravel wheels weigh only 1,320g and are paired with 'aero' tyres Lighter than ever The Revolt Advanced SL has been reimagined as a pure racer. Giant Bicycles The new Advanced SL grade frame weighs in at a claimed 839g (size M), 151g lighter than the previous generation. Alongside the frame, the all-new fork also sees a drop of 10g to 385g. Its the first time the Revolt has been part of the SL manufacturing process, which employs Giants own carbon nanotube tech resin (CNT) and in-house woven fibres cut accurately using its cold-blade technology. Alongside the frame, an all-new one-piece cockpit brings further weight savings, with the Contact SLR XR weighing in at 295g. The new Cadex Max GXR wheels weigh 1,280g (118g lighter than the previous top-end model's wheelset). So, even with larger-volume tyres as standard, the Revolt Advanced SL 0 is 288g lighter than the previous-generation Revolt Advanced Pro 0. Giant claims the SL 0s stiffness-to-weight ratio is 31% higher than the previous bike. The new integrated cockpit keeps the Revolt front end clean. Giant Bicycles Aero everywhere, even the tyres The new 45mm Cadex GXR tyre tread is optimised for rolling resistance and aero. Cadex Giant says the increased speeds in gravel racing have made aerodynamics the key to any new gravel bike design. It says: With race speeds at 30 to 45 km/h over five to ten hours, sustained drag is a direct tax on energy output. The new Revolt Advanced SL has been engineered to minimise drag across every element of the system. The frameset and fork, along with the cockpit, draw on Giant's aerodynamic expertise from bikes such as the TCR and Propel. Giant claims the revised frameset alone has helped reduce aerodynamic drag by 3.72 watts over the previous generation. The one-piece bar also adds aero efficiency, reducing turbulence over conventional setups thanks to the hidden brake-hose routing, keeping a clean aero profile. The wheels on the SL 0, Cadexs Max GXR, have a 50mm-deep wide profile that was designed to work in conjunction with the 45mm GXR tyre. The wheels' 25mm internal profile is matched with a 5mm-wide rim bead that improves impact resistance and profiles the tyre to the rims width. Even the tyre tread has been optimised to reduce rolling resistance while maintaining grip. The tread has also been profiled to complement the aerodynamics of the tyre and rim. Carbon aero spokes also help to reduce drag. The wheel and tyre combination reduces drag by 3.03 watts, according to Giant and thats with a 5mm wider tyre than the previous wheel and tyre combination. Wind-tunnel tests have shown a total reduction in drag of 18.99 watts, with 13.81 of those watts coming from aero improvements and 3.03 watts of rolling resistance savings. The remainder comes from wheel-rotation drag reductions. Race geometry The Revolt Advanced SL 0 tops the range at 9,999. Giant Bicycles The Advanced SL has geometry aimed squarely at racing, whereas previous Revolts were aimed at being all-rounders, or for more adventurous terrain in the case of the Revolt X. That means a lower, longer ride position. The stack drops from 586mm to 557mm on a medium, while at the same time the reach extends to 395mm. Giant has also steepened the seat angle to 74.5 degrees, shifting the rider weight forward, more over the bottom bracket for improved pedalling efficiency. The shift towards more progressive geometry is something weve seen in road-bike design. Is this a sign its coming to gravel, too? The Revolt has dropped the flip chip in favour of a UDH dropout. Giant Bicycles Elsewhere, the wheelbase has been kept short, while increasing the tyre clearance to 53mm. Out has gone the flip chip rear end Giant has used on the Revolt for the past two iterations. It's replaced by a simplified UDH dropout an essential on a modern gravel bike since the introduction of SRAM's direct-mount XPLR derailleurs. Giant Revolt Advanced SL pricing and range details Revolt Advanced SL 1 comes with SRAM Force XPLR and Giant's new CXR wheelset for 6,999. - WWW.BIKERADAR.COMCadex's new Max CXR gravel wheels weigh only 1,320g and are paired with 'aero' tyresCadex has unveiled the new lightweight Max CXR wheelset, which combines with its also newly launched CXR tyres to create an aero wheel system for gravel racing. The new gravel wheels and tyres were designed together with the aim of producing the ultimate aero gravel package. Jeff Schneider, global head of product at Cadex, explains: "With the Max GXR, we focused on the demands of modern gravel racing, where riders need efficiency, control, and durability at increasingly high speeds. The CXR wheelset was developed by Cadexs wheel engineers to meet the needs of stablemates Giant and Liv. The sibling brands have today released new pure-racing gravel bikes alongside the wheel and tyre system. The Liv Devote Advanced SL and Giant Revolt Advanced SL both feature the Max CXR WheelSystem on their flagship SL 0 models. Cadex has concentrated on upping the aero performance of the new wheels and tyres, increasing the transmission stiffness, and improving the durability to impacts as demanded by fast, long-distance gravel racing. "It changes what's possible in every race situation" new Giant Revolt Advanced SL is 'lightest and fastest gravel bike ever' "The demands of the sport are higher than ever" new Liv Devote Advanced SL is fully focused on gravel racing Full-carbon construction Giant's new Revolt Advanced SL 0 gets the Cadex Max CXR WheelSystem and tyres. Giant Bicycles The new 50mm-deep wheelset weighs in at a claimed 1,320g (including tapes and valves). Thats seriously light for gravel wheels this deep and wide. The low weight is down to Cadex using the same construction techniques as it does on its flagship road wheelset, the Max 40. The new rim profile has a 25mm internal width with reinforced 5mm rim sidewalls. Cadex claims this toughened structure improves impact resistance, reduces the chances of pinch punctures and enables even lower tyre pressures than standard TSS (tubeless straight sided rims). The Max CXR rim has a broad 5mm sidewall. Cadex Bladed aero carbon spokes are bonded to Cadexs high-flange carbon hubs. Cadex claims this construction method greatly reduces turbulence at the wheel centre. At the rim, the broad width and tyre form create a smoother interface compared to traditional rims. This improves airflow across the interface and reduces drag. Cadex says wind-tunnel testing showed a system reduction of 4.61W over the previous Cadex AR35 wheelset with a narrower 40mm tyre. Aero tyres? The new Cadex 45mm GXR tyre tread is optimised for rolling resistance and aero performance. Cadex The new GXR gravel tyre has been designed for mixed conditions, with a high-volume, fast-rolling centre tread and refined shoulder geometry that not only improves traction and control but also reduces drag, according to Cadex. The tyres feature a supple 170TPI casing, with Race Shield+ puncture protection and X-Shield reinforced sidewalls for durability. The tyres come in 45 and 50mm sizes. Cadex's new Max GXR WheelSystem won't only be found on Giant and Liv bikes. - WWW.BIKERADAR.COM"The demands of the sport are higher than ever" new Liv Devote Advanced SL is fully focused on gravel racingLiv has announced the release of its new Devote Advanced SL gravel bike, launched alongside the Giant Revolt Advanced SL, with both bikes sporting a new lighter construction, new aerodynamic focus, and revised race-focused geometry. Like the Revolt, Liv's new women's gravel bike gets new Cadex gravel wheels and tyres also launched today, contributing to a complete bike thats Livs fastest ever drop-bar off-roader. The Devote Advanced SL was developed with input from Liv Racing Collective privateers Tessa Neefjes and Melisa Rollins, who compete at the highest level of gravel racing. Melisa Rollins and Tessa Neefjes testing out prototypes of the Devote Advanced SL. Liv Cycling According to Ludi Scholz, Liv's gravel and off-road category manager: Tessa and Melisas direct feedback informed the bikes handling characteristics, efficiency targets, tire optimisation and overall race performance priorities. The demands of the sport are higher than ever, and riders are asking more from their equipment. The new Devote Advanced SL reflects that shift. Its our fastest, lightest, and most race-focused gravel platform yet, developed alongside the athletes pushing the sport forward. "It changes what's possible in every race situation" new Giant Revolt Advanced SL is 'lightest and fastest gravel bike ever' Cadex's new Max CXR gravel wheels weigh only 1,320g and are paired with 'aero' tyres Lightened with improved aero A lower front end and a longer reach. Liv Cycling For the first time, the Devote has been made using the Advanced SL carbon construction methods of parent company Giant. That means the same in-house woven carbon and nanotech resins as used on Giant and Livs WorldTour-level bikes. The Devote shares the same Cadex GXR wheel/tyre system as used on the new Giant Revolt Advanced SL 0. Similarly, Liv claims the redesigned frameset combined with the wheels makes for a 25% improvement in the ratio of pedalling stiffness to weight. There's also a 38.5% improvement in handling stiffness to weight. The Devote Advanced SL 0 weighs 4,223g, including the frameset, Cadex Max GXR wheels, Liv Contact SLR XR Integrated Handlebar and Cadex GXR 45mm race tyres. That's 297g lighter than Liv's previous flagship Devote Advanced Pro, despite its wider 45mm race tyres. Tyre clearance is up to 53mm on the Devote Advanced SL. Liv Cycling The aerodynamic improvements are a result of using the Liv/Giant AeroSystem shaping for the frame tubes, fork and cockpit the same design protocols as seen on bikes such as the pro-tour proven EnviLiv and Giant Propel. Liv says its own wind-tunnel testing against the Devote Advanced Pro confirms total system savings of 20.03 watts using rider positions matched to the intended geometry and riding style of each platform. The Devote Advanced Pro has a more upright all-road gravel position, while the Devote Advanced SL has a new race-focused riding position developed around a lower stack, longer reach and a more aggressive front-end setup. Riding to Georgia Liv's Georgia mannequin was used to develop the new Devote Advanced SL. Liv Cycling Liv has also developed 'Georgia', a next-generation wind-tunnel mannequin created using the body dimensions of Liv AlUla Jayco athlete Georgia Baker for reference. The modular 3D-printed mannequin has realistic torso shaping and dynamic adjustability to the ride position. Liv says this more accurately reflects how women sustain speed across rough terrain and over long gravel race distances. Liv says this means that through its testing process it has been able to optimise rider efficiency across realistic gravel race positions and conditions. Race-optimised geometry The new Devote Advanced SL 0 is Liv's purest gravel race bike to date. Liv Cycling Unlike the Devote Advanced Pro, the new SL has new race-ready geometry in the form of lower stack, longer reach, and both a steeper head angle and shorter trail. The longer front-centre brings a much more aggressive ride position and more precise steering. Liv says the new design is optimised around 45mm gravel tyres, yet has clearance for up to 53mm widths, which provides the best balance of rolling speed, grip, and handling on unpredictable terrain. - WWW.BIKERADAR.COMPaul Seixas named as youngest Tour de France rider in 89 years, Mathieu van der Poel and Jasper Philipsen also confirmed every squad announced so farPaul Seixas has been confirmed as co-leader of the Decathlon CMA CGM team, with the 19-year-old Frenchman set to be the youngest rider to start the Tour de France since 1937. Seixas has enjoyed a remarkable rise to pro cycling's top table in 2026, having finished second at the Volta ao Algarve and Strade Bianche and Lige-Bastogne-Lige, and winning Faun-Ardche Classic, Itzulia Basque Country and La Flche Wallonne. Seixas is France's latest hope for a first Tour de France winner since Bernard Hinault, who won his fifth and final Tour in 1985 but expectations are, of course, tempered by the presence of Tadej Pogaar, Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel in the field. Seixas also crashed hard at the Tour Auvergne-Rhne-Alpes before abandoning the race, but has been declared fit for the Tour and will co-lead Decathlon CMA CGM alongside Dutch sprinter Olav Kooij. Tour de France squad announcements continue to come in thick and fast, ahead of Saturday's Grand Dpart, with Soudal Quick-Step, EF Education-EasyPost and Alpecin-Premier Tech among the latest teams to reveal their line-ups. Mikel Landa misses out for Soudal Quick-Step, as a result of a lingering back injury, Ben Healy will aim to replicate last year's heroics for EF Education-EasyPost, and Mathieu van der Poel and Jasper Philipsen are both on the start sheet for Alpecin-Premier Tech. UAE Team Emirates-XRG has also announced the line-up of riders to support Pogaar, fresh from dominating the Tour de Suisse, through July, with star domestiques Isaac del Toro, winner of the Tour Auvergne-Rhne-Alpes, and Adam Yates part of the eight-man roster. The Tour de France is always the biggest challenge of the season and also the race that motivates us the most. Every year, you arrive at the start knowing that anything can happen over three weeks, and thats what makes it so special," said Pogaar, who will also be supported by Felix Groschartner, Brandon McNulty, Nils Politt, Florian Vermeersch and Tim Wellens. This year's Tour de France route starts with a 19.6km team time trial, ensuring every rider needs to arrive on the start line in prime condition. This is the first TTT at the Tour since 2019 and, with an uphill finish (800m at 7%) to Barcelona's Olympic Stadium, it's also an opportunity to gain time on rivals from the first flag. - WWW.BIKERADAR.COMNew Zipp 404 S wheels bring high-performance aero to budget pricing for first timeThe new Zipp 404 S wheelset brings carbon tubeless aerodynamic Zipp wheels to a previously unheard-of price point. The 50mm-deep, 1,585g wheels are priced at 985 / $1,300 / 1,100. They come with Zipps proven 76/176 hubset and Sapim CX Sprint spokes, backed by Zipps no quibble lifetime warranty and crash replacement policy. While the outgoing 303 S wheels hit the same price point, Zipp says the 404 S with its improvements in aerodynamics is its first high-performance specialist aero wheelset at this price point. Why make the 404 S? The 404 S brings Zipp's carbon aero knowhow to a lower price point. Ashley/Jared gruber With the rise of competitor Asian wheel brands and a myriad of new wheel builders emerging, established specialists such as Zipp, Mavic and ENVE have faced stiff competition in recent years. This led to Zipp not only reducing the prices of its premium Firecrest models, but also the arrival of the S line of affordable wheels. The 404 S is the latest model to join the S range. The new design borrows the shape from the Firecrest wheels, although the rim depth has been reduced from 58mm to 50mm. The rim follows Zipps established TSS (tubeless straight side) hookless design with a 23mm internal width. Like the 404 Firecrest, it's optimised for 28-30mm tyres. Zipp says the new shape saves 2 watts over the 303 S. Detail-heavy testing The Zipp 404 S compared to similar-depth all-rounder wheelsets. Zipp Those who are familiar with the 404 Firecrest will know it's Zipps fastest road wheel, with a rim section thats 58mm deep. The 404 S, however, is aimed at bridging the gap between the pro-level 404 Firecrest and the all-rounder 303 S at 40mm. Nathan Schickel, Zipps road wheel product manager, explains the reason for the 50mm depth. "It still gives a real aero advantage, but is more user friendly in all conditions than a specialist aero option like the 404 Firecrest, or similarly deep wheels of Zipps competition," he says. Zipp has benchmarked the 404 S in a new way, using wind-tunnel data, real-world data and CFD (Computational fluid dynamics). The real-world data and CFD involve data collection from riding in different wind conditions and at various yaw angles. The data collation also included historical meteorological data to better understand the wheels' performance. The graph produced from this testing balances the aero and yaw data into a single 'weighted aero drag (watts) number on the vertical axis, and on the horizontal axis is the price (in $). By plotting the aero data against price, Zipp hopes to give riders a better understanding of what you can expect to gain for your outlay. Zipp 404 S details The 404 S rim is 50mm deep with a hookless 23mm internal width. Zipp The full-carbon rim has an internal width of 23mm and uses Zipps straight-sided hookless rim design. It's fitted with Sapims CX Sprint steel spokes cheaper, marginally heavier spokes than the CX Rays found on Zipps premium wheels. The front features 20 spokes and the rear 24. Zipp hasn't made the switch to carbon spokes as many competing brands have. Schickel explains the brand has been testing carbon spokes for two years, although it remains unconvinced by carbon's longevity and toughness when it comes to wheels. By using steel spokes, Zipp has been able to give the 404 S a generous maximum weight limit of 235lb/115kg. The wheels are also backed by Zipps unconditional lifetime warranty and crash replacement policy the same cover afforded to the brand's premium models, which retail for more than twice the price of the 404 S. The 176 rear hub has a 3-pawl, 36-point engagement freehub. Zipp The wheels are completed by Zipps 176/76 hubset. These hubs have been in Zipps range for more than a decade. Schickel says the reason for choosing this paring is theyre dependable, durable and with improved bearing seals. Consisting of contact seals on the outside, with non-contact on the inside, theyre well protected from the elements, yet have reduced system drag. The 176 rear hub uses a 3-pawl driver body with 36 points of engagement for quick engagement. The rear wheel comes with either SRAM XDR or HG11 freehubs. The 404 S effectively replaces the 303 S and has already been seen on new bike specifications most notably on the updated SRAM Force AXS equipped Canyon Aeroad CF SLX 8. Ventum and Megamo have also announced bikes equipped with the 404 S. The Zipp 404 S is available with bold white or understated dark grey graphics. Ashley/Jared Gruber The Zipp S range of wheels now has the 404 S for the road, and the 303 S XPLR for gravel and all-road, with the 1Zero Hitop S covering XC mountain biking. Zipp 404 S pricing Zipp 404 S front wheel: $630 / 475 / 530 Zipp 404 S rear wheel (HG or XDR): $670 / 510 / 570 Zipp 404 S pair: $1,300 / 985 / 1,1000 Comentários 0 Compartilhamentos 51 Visualizações
