Photo by A.S.O. / Thomas MaheuxGuillermo Thomas Silva (XDS Astana Team) won the queen stage of the Arctic Race of Norway atop Storheia on Saturday and took the race lead, countering Lennert van Eetvelts attack with 300 metres to go and holding him off to the line.The Storheia climb 3.5km at 11.8%, known locally as the Norwegian Mont Ventoux split the race on its opening slopes, with the best climbers going clear from Stokmarknes. Van Eetvelt took control in the final part of the climb before Silva countered inside the last 300 metres. The Belgian fought all the way to the line but the Uruguayan held on, finishing the stage in 3:29:11.Silva is the first South American to win a stage of the Arctic Race of Norway and takes the Midnight Sun jersey, leading Van Eetvelt by 10 seconds and Alessandro Pinarello by 21. Robbe Dhondt was fourth on the stage and sits fourth overall at 25 seconds.Giovanni Lonardi holds the points classification on 45, two ahead of Erlend Blikra. Morthen Wang Baksaas keeps the Northern Lights jersey on 13 points and Silva also leads the young rider classification. Unibet Rose Rockets take over the teams standings.Dillon Corkery finished 84th at 7:26 and drops 56 places to 83rd overall a hard day on the climb after two top-30 sprint stages.Stage 4 on Sunday runs Daniel Bresnan (Greenmount CA) won the combined Elite and Masters race at the Munster Criterium Championships at Limerick Racecourse on Friday evening, out-sprinting Mike Storan and Daryl Kearns from a four-rider group.Greenmount Cycling Academy hosted their final criterium day of 2026 in warm, cloudy conditions, with a stiff northerly wind making the home straight hard work. Racing began at 6pm with the under-8/10 event and ran through the evening, with Munster championship medals decided across the adult categories.A cagey start to the combined race produced several attacks before a break went clear. Bresnan bridged across with help from Dermot Radford (Dan Morrissey Cycling Team) to join Kearns (Dungarvan CC) and Storan (West Clare CC) at the front. Erlend Blikra (Uno-X Mobility) won stage 2 of the Arctic Race of Norway in Andenes on Friday, taking the sprint in 3:56:49 from Ethan Vernon and race leader Giovanni Lonardi.It is a home win for the 29-year-old Norwegian, seven years after his first appearance at the race and on his return this week Norways 18th victory on home soil, on the races 50th stage. It is also the third consecutive year that a Norwegian, and an Uno-X Mobility rider, has won at least one stage here.Lonardi keeps the Midnight Sun jersey, now four seconds ahead of Blikra, who climbs five places on general classification with the win. Teodor De Luca is third at six seconds, with Vernon fourth and Jason Tesson fifth, both at eight.Lonardi also leads the points classification on 45, two clear of Blikra, who wears the jersey on the road. Morten Wang Baksaas holds the Northern Lights jersey on 10 points and De Luca retains the young rider lead. Euskaltel-Euskadi climb six places to take over the teams classification from NSN Cycling Team. Herman Emil Eriksen was named most active rider.The general classification contenders have kept a low profile through two sprint days, but Saturdays stage 3 from Stokmarknes should settle that: it Giovanni Lonardi (Team Polti VisitMalta) won the opening stage of the Arctic Race of Norway in Myre on Thursday, taking the sprint from Jason Tesson and Riley Pickrell after 181.9km from Evenes at an average of 44.477km/h.Five riders went clear from the start of the 13th editions first stage and were caught with 3km remaining. Lonardi takes the Midnight Sun jersey as race leader, the third Italian to lead the race, with Tesson four seconds back and Teodor De Luca third at the same time.It is Lonardis first win of the year, Italys fourth at the Arctic Race, and a first here for Polti VisitMalta on their debut appearance. Morthen Wang Baksaas (Lucky Sport) takes the Northern Lights jersey as mountains leader, the tenth Norwegian to wear it. De Luca leads the young riders, NSN Cycling Team the teams standings, and Eirik Vang Aas was named most active rider.Dillon Corkery was the sole Irish rider in action, finishing 31st in the bunch and Tommy Campbell never did.He rode. He officiated, for many years as Chief Commissaire of the Junior Tour of Ireland. He administered. He sat on the board of the federation. He brought sponsors to the sport when nobody else could find them. And through all of it, he wrote for the Evening Herald, the Irish Independent and the Sunday Independent, for Cyclingnews, for IrishCycling.com, and every Friday for years on this website.Tommy Campbell died on Monday, 10 August 2026.The commissaireTo a generation of young Irish riders, Tommy was the man overseeing the race.He was Chief Commissaire at the Junior Tour of Ireland for many years, and officiated at many other stage races besides. In its tribute, the Junior Tour remembered a commissaire who insisted on fairness while making allowance for the fact that the riders in front of him were still learning their trade and who made sure he gave everyone on the race the time to be heard, whatever the issue.Anyone who has worked a stage race knows how rare that combination is. The commissaire who is firm without being cold; who can give a decision a team manager hates and still get a handshake at the finish. On a junior race it matters more again, because the riders are teenagers, the mistakes are real, and how they are handled shapes whether a young rider stays in the sport at all. Tommy got that.An ambassadorIn its tribute, Cycling Ireland called him a long-time Cycling Ambassador, and said he had been involved in the sport all his life as rider, commissaire and administrator, as well as through what the federation described as his fantastic commitment as a cycling journalist. He was, they said, always flying the flag for the sport at every opportunity.His fingerprints are on the structure of Irish cycling itself. Cycling Irelands statement traces him through every stage of the federations journey to its present form: senior administrator with the Irish Cycling Federation, member of the Irish Cycling Tripartite Committee, and finally a Board Member of Cycling Ireland.He was also, by the federations own account, the man who could get a few punts out of anybody. He promoted some of the best races and events in the country and introduced major brands to cycling sponsorship Guinness among them. In a sport perpetually short of money, that is no footnote. Races ran because Tommy made calls.His smile and his happiness will be missed by all.Cycling IrelandThe DiaryFor a lot of years this website carried Tommys Cycling Diaries the Irish Cycling Diary, out every Friday.It was a column in the old sense, and there is hardly a thing like it left in Irish sport. Results and previews, yes, but wrapped in opinion, mischief and memory. He wrote in capitals when he wanted you to hear him shouting. He nominated his fancies for the weekend, backed them with his own money, and reported his losses to readers with great good humour when the shirt was going off his back. He had opinions on how the sport was run, and having sat at the table for decades he had earned the right to voice them.He wrote obituaries better than anyone. When Colm Christle, the first winner of the Rs in 1953, died in late 2018, Tommy recalled interviewing him years before and described the old champion as pedalling into history all those years ago. That was the Diary at its best: a man who had been present for most of it, reaching back and pulling the past into the present for readers who never saw it.And he never stopped promoting the small events. A club promotion in Newbridge nearly derailed at midnight, and the Kildare family who rescued it. The Masters Championships in Wexford, where hed gone to school. A youth league started in Carrick-on-Suir back in the sixties. He gave them all their column inches, week after week, because he thought they mattered.The column was built on the telephone. Riders and organisers have described how Tommy would ring them most Thursdays through the season, gathering what he needed before the Friday piece went up the same calls feeding his newspaper work. He was, by every account, the man who had the inside scoop on everything going on in Irish cycling, and he got it the old way: by talking to people, week after week, for decades.The wider recordLong before the Diary, Tommy carried Irish cycling into the national press. His byline ran across the Independent group titles Irish Independent, Evening Herald and Sunday Independent in an era when column inches for the sport were fought for week by week.His reach went further still. He contributed to Cyclingnews for many years, filing Irish results to an international audience from as far back as 2002 and covering the biggest races on the calendar, including live reporting from MilanSan Remo. He was a Wexford man by schooling a St Peters boy, as he noted himself in the Diary when the Masters Championships returned to the town where he went to school. Outside the sport he worked for years with Kraft Foods, though anyone who met him in that capacity seems mainly to remember the long conversations about bikes that followed.CalpeFor a good number of years through the An Post cycling team era, when Sean Kellys squad wintered in Spain An Post brought the Irish cycling press out to Calpe for the team launch, and Tommy was always among the party.Those trips are where you got to know him properly. The launch itself was the excuse; what you remember is the rest of it Tommy working the room, greeting riders and staff hed known since they were juniors, gathering the stories that would surface in the Diary weeks later. He was in his element among the crew. And in the gaps between the formal business there was the pleasure of watching a man who had given his life to the sport simply enjoying being in the middle of it: the sunshine, the coffee, the talk, the company of people who spoke his language. It would start as a two-minute call about some small thing and then wander off down every avenue going but always, somehow, back to cycling. An hour later youd put the phone down having covered half the sport and most of the country, and it felt like it had taken two minutes. And you always came away from it wiser to the world than you were before you picked up.He rang me one Monday morning with some problem or other on the PC. Send it down to me, I said, thinking of the post. The next day I got a call from reception to say there was someone here to see me. It was Tommy. He had got on the train in Bray with the computer under his arm and travelled the length of the country to Limerick to hand it to me himself.We had lunch. He gave me the PC and went home. I fixed it that evening and rang him.The next day, another call from reception. He had made the whole trip again to collect it.Two hundred kilometres each way, two days running, for a machine that could have gone in a box. When I said something about it, he just grinned that infectious grin of his and said sure, its free transport.That was the thing about Tommy Id say he enjoyed every mile of it. The journey was an excuse for the lunch, and the lunch was an excuse for the talk, and the talk was always, one way or another, about cycling.A legend of a guy.And in Calpe he did me a turn Ive never forgotten.Wed been told to bring helmets and cycling shoes out with us. Extra luggage, I thought Ill hardly be needing mine. Then a ride out with the team was arranged, and there I was with no shoes and no helmet.Tommy took it upon himself to sort it. He went round the whole camp cornering people Sean Kelly and the rest of the crew included until he had a helmet and a pair of shoes in my size. I was out riding with the team the next day.Cycling Ireland said in their tribute this week that Tommy was always the man who could get a few punts out of somebody, and that he brought big sponsors like Guinness into the sport. I can vouch for the technique. He turned it on a pair of shoes for a journalist who hadnt packed properly, and it worked just as well.Cycling will miss him dearly, and so will I.TributesThe response to the news has been extraordinary in its consistency. One word appears again and again in the hundreds of messages left on the Junior Tours announcement: gentleman.Sean Kelly called him a true gentleman. Riders remember him seeking them out at races to make sure they got expenses to cover their travel. Trainee commissaires remember his encouragement. Dutch teams who came to the Junior Tour from 1997 onwards remember him in the commissaires car. Club men from Dublin Wheelers to Bray Wheelers claim him as a friend of theirs.The recurring theme is a man whose enthusiasm was infectious several people made the same observation independently, that you came away from a conversation with Tommy convinced Irish cycling was on the up. Another noted that he helped anybody, regardless of club, and that he was among those who fought to unify Irish cycling through the ICF years.More than one person said the same thing: you could write a book about what Tommy did for this sport.A place in the Hall of FameCycling Irelands Hall of Fame honours the people who built this sport. Among them are five men recognised in part for the Tripartite Committee work that unified Irish cycling Tommy sat on that committee too. It honours JJ McCormack, who conceived the Junior Tour Tommy was the man who ran it on the road for years afterwards. It honours Peter Purfield, who founded the website that became IrishCycling.com Tommy filed to it every week for the best part of two decades.His contribution runs straight through the middle of theirs, and he is not yet among them.IrishCyclingNews intends to submit Tommy Campbells name for consideration at the next review of Hall of Fame candidates. The case is a straightforward one: rider, commissaire, administrator, Tripartite member, Board Member, promoter, the man who brought sponsors like Guinness into Irish cycling, and the journalist who kept the record of it all for decades. Few people in the history of the sport in this country have given it so much across so many different roles.Anybody who wishes to add their name in support is welcome to be in touch. Given the response of the last few days, we suspect there will be no shortage.He just loved cycling.He was of that generation who understood that the job was never about the writer. It was about the riders, the organisers, the marshals in wet high-vis on a February corner. Demi Vollering (FDJ United-Suez) won the final stage of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in Nice on Sunday to seal overall victory, attacking inside the last kilometre of the Col dze to take the 99km stage in 2:44:43. Paula Blasi and Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney came in together at 1:04, with Niamh Fisher-Black fourth on the same time.It is Vollerings second Tour de France Femmes title after 2023, won by 1:18 from Niewiadoma-Phinney and 4:29 from Elisa Longo Borghini, who takes third after Marlen Reusser was dropped early and later crashed out of contention. Vollering finishes with three stage wins from this race.Lorena Wiebes takes the green jersey on 181 points and Puck Pieterse the mountains classification on 55. Antonia Niedermaier wins the young rider classification and finishes fourth overall, ahead of Blasi in fifth. Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney (Canyon//SRAM) won stage 7 of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift on Mont Ventoux on Friday and took the yellow jersey, finishing the 144km from La Voulte-sur-Rhne in 4:22:53. Demi Vollering was second at 1:16 and Elisa Longo Borghini third at 1:42, with Marlen Reusser fourth at 1:46.It is Niewiadoma-Phinneys first stage win at the race, at the fortieth attempt. The 2024 overall winner had six previous stage podiums two seconds and four thirds without ever taking a stage, and becomes the 22nd different rider to win one, with Poland the 11th nation. It is a second Tour de France Femmes stage win for Canyon//SRAM after Ricarda Bauernfeind at Albi in 2023.The Pole takes yellow for the fifth time in her career, behind only Marianne Vos (8) and Lotte Kopecky (6), and leads Vollering by 15 seconds the closest one-two after seven stages in the races history, beating the 26 seconds between Le Court-Pienaar and Ferrand-Prvot in 2025. Reusser is third at 39 seconds. She is the fourth different rider to lead this years race after Lorena Wiebes, Sigrid Ytterhus Haugset and Reusser, which has never happened in a single edition before.Mont Ventoux made its debut in the race, at 1,910m the highest point of this edition and the fourth highest the peloton has reached since 2022. Kim Le Court-Pienaar (AG Insurance-Soudal) won stage 6 of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in Tournon-sur-Rhne on Thursday, taking the 153km stage from Montbrison in 4:01:48 ahead of Cdrine Kerbaol and Puck Pieterse, both on the same time. Sarah Van Dam was fourth, the best stage result ever by a Canadian rider.It is a second Tour de France Femmes stage win for Le Court-Pienaar, a year on from her victory in Guret, and a second for Mauritius she remains the only Mauritian to have won at the race. AG Insurance-Soudal have now won a stage in each of the last three editions, a run only Team SD Worx-Protime have matched.Marlen Reusser keeps the yellow jersey with Demi Vollering still 12 seconds behind the closest one-two in the races history at this point, beating the 16 seconds between Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney and Kerbaol in 2024. Niewiadoma-Phinney is third at 1:17 and Elisa Longo Borghini up two places to fourth at 2:28.Puck Pieterse was first over the Cte de Prigneux, the Cte de Boucieu-le-Roi and the Col de Lalouvesc to reach 47 mountains points the highest total in the history of the race, beating Justine Ghekieres 46 from 2024. She has now led over 16 categorised climbs, another record. Demi Vollering (FDJ United-Suez) won stage 5 of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift in Belleville-en-Beaujolais on Wednesday, covering the 140km from Mcon in 3:53:54. Marlen Reusser and Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney finished on the same time.It is Vollerings fourth stage win at the race, after the Col du Tourmalet in 2023 and Rotterdam and Alpe dHuez in 2024, and her first in 717 days. The win is only the second for FDJ United-Suez at the Tour de France Femmes, ending a wait of 1,471 days since Cecilie Uttrup Ludwigs stage 3 victory in pernay in 2022. Vollering had also led over Mont Brouilly 3km at 7.7% earlier in the stage, extending her record as the only rider to take a categorised climb in all five editions of the race.Reusser holds the yellow jersey, now just 12 seconds ahead of Vollering, with Niewiadoma-Phinney third at 1:17 after moving up three places. The Poles third place was her sixth stage podium at the race, still without a stage win a record in itself.Puck Pieterse extends her mountains lead to 37 points after leading over all six categorised climbs, a record for a single stage, and takes her fifth polka-dot jersey. Lorena Wiebes leads the points classification on 131 points, a record thirteenth green jersey that moves her past Marianne Vos. Antonia Niedermaier takes the young rider jersey Germanys first distinctive jersey in the race and UAE Team LIMAD move back to the top of the teams classification.India Grangier abandoned, and Teuntje Beekhuis and Hannah Ludwig did not start, leaving 135 riders in the race.Stage 6 on Thursday runs 153km from Montbrison to Tournon-sur-Rhne, rated hilly.Our RidersFiona Mangan finished 83rd at 24:57 and Mia Griffin 121st at 30:08.
