- BIKERUMOR.COMWilier Verticale SLR Ultralight Carbon Road Bike is 10% Lighter Than Zero First RidesThe new Verticale SLR is Wiliers lightest road bike ever. The next new road bike to be developed together with the Groupama FDJ team, this new Wilier Verticale SLR is an undeniable lightweight, built for when the roads head up into the mountains. But its not just an ultralight climbers bike, the all-new Verticale is a light and stiff allrounder with modern wide road tire clearances and slick integration. Plus, it never hurts that our XS test bike weighs in at just 6.7kg, without any component compromisesWilier Verticale SLR lightweight carbon climbers road bike(Photos/Cory Benson)Out of the box under the minimum UCI weight limit before we threaded on a set of pedals, the new Wilier Verticale SLR immediately feels lightweight. They say it is the lightest bike the Italian bike maker has ever built based on a kit of frame, fork, hand;lebars & seatpost. But that statement would seem to include some light rim brake bikes of the past like the 680g 110th anniversary Zero.6.In any case, this bike is light and feels light. Wilier pegs that frame kit at 1623g.It claims to be 9.7% lighter than the disc brake 0 SLR down from its 1798g frame kit. And that sensation is only amplified when the road starts to point uphill. But Wilier made clear that they werent cutting performance corners to save weight. This was built to be a Pro Tour race bike, and need to back up its light weight with race-ready stiffness.Groupama FDJ R&D(Photo/WIlier)Wilier and FDJ worked back and forth from the R&D lab to the wind tunnel, to out on the road to refine a lightweight bike with maximum control. Wilier aimed to build a bike to climb quickly up the mountain, then descend the other side in complete control.(Photo/WIlier)You can feel that the Verticale was designed to respond specifically when the gradients are challenging and youre dancing on the pedals. It gives you back exactly what you give it and you feel in complete control during highly technical high-speed descents: this is very important because a professional cyclist needs to fully trust his bike. It truly is an excellent bike for mountain stages. It will be my trusted companion throughout the Tour de France and I cant wait to test it during the mountain stages. David Gaudu, Groupama FDJ pro cyclistNew carbon manufacturing tech(Photo/WIlier)The new Wilier Verticale SLR is carefully crafted with a combination of extremely high tensile strength T800 & T1100 carbon, mixed in with hi-mod M46JB fibers. The target was lightweight with superior torsional stiffness. The real secret to making that work though, seems to be a new Active Moulding process that uses a new type of foamed polymer inner molds that adapt to the materials during the curing process presumably expanding from the inside to eliminate any air bubbles, excess resin, or wrinkles in the carbon layup. What else is new?Compared to the previous 0 SLR, the new Verticale SLR is slimmed down and tweaked across the board, shedding a few grams with every little change. But the frame and fork shape changes are mostly quite subtle, with most of the upgrades happening inside the carbon layup. One of the most prominent changes in the new bike though, is the revised seat cluster. The Verticale now gets a smoother web between the seat and top tubes, angled down in line with the seatstays. The new revised integrated wedge-style seatpost clamp, now fits angled into that connecting web to clamp the proprietary 27.2mm deep but just 22mm wide aero seatpost. The Verticale SLR also features revised racing geometry compared to the 0 SLR. The changes are relatively minor, but Wilier expanded the frame Reach range shorter on the smaller, longer on the largest sizes to offer a wider fit range, while retaining low Stack numbers. Combine that with new sizes for the all-new cockpit to deliver race-ready fits to more riders. That new 1-piece monocoque carbon V Bar cockpit is said to weigh just 310g. It has a smooth flattened top with high mounts for the lever hoods. Then, just below the hoods, the bars quickly widen for more stability. It has the same effect as a bar with about 10 of flare, yet the drops remain parallel with the full transition happening just under your brake levers. The end result is the bar is 3cm wider at the drops than it is at the hoods. Narrow & aero up top, then wider for sprinting stability and wrist clearance down below. Tech detailsAsymmetric full carbon fork with 1.25 tapered steerer, flat mount disc brake & 12mm thru-axleGenerous clearance around max 32mm tires (theres room for 35s in our test bike, with room to spare)New removable braze-on front derailleur hanger, for perfect compact or pro 2x chainring ratiosNew full carbon dropout for 12mm thru-axle & flat mount 140mm, with modular insert and replaceable derailleur hangerProprietary aero carbon seatpost with either 0mm or 15mm offset heads, plus integrated number plate or taillight mounting BB86 PressFit bottom bracketV Bar full carbon integrated one-piece handlebar cockpit with replaceable alloy steerer clamp hardware6 cockpit sizes available: 37/40mm & 39/42mm widths, with 110, 120, 130 & 150mm stemsV Bar-specific alloy out-front GPS mount, includedFirst ClimbsWith modern wide tire clearance, powerful disc brakes, and race-proven geometry, this lightweight bike is still a solid all-rounder. And weve been pedaling to lots of PRs & the occasional QOM from cobblestone sectors to local climbs. On the flats and through rolling terrain is simply feels fast. The handling is quick and the bike is really light though, so high-speed descending in the wind requires careful attention. Steeper climbing felt quick, but even with the UCI-illegal weights amateur riders looking for a climbers bike might want compact instead of the mid-compact gearing that came on this bike. Our XS test bike slackens the head angle out quite a bit to eliminate toe overlap, which is fine for most riding. But standing & pedaling out of the saddle on the steepest climbs, and the front end flops a bit. Maybe a shorter cockpit might help keep weight stable further back when climbing? We might also suggest smaller riders on the edge to size up if they plan to spend a lot of time in the mountains.Riding ImpressionsA pleasant surprise was how planted and smooth the bike felt over the cobbles and broken asphalt. A lot of that certainly goes to the light and supple 30mm Vittoria Corsa Pro TLR tires (31mm measured). But fast-rolling, comfortable, and grippy tires are one of the greatest things about top-tier modern road bikes. And theres plenty of room for wider tires for heavier riders or more time on rougher roads.Another nice surprise was the Prologo Onetouch 3D tape with its little CPC connected power control tubes. They deliver great grip even when sweaty and pleasant airflow. We just wish that Wilier would have wrapped it all the way around the bend a few cm further. Sure, more bar tape is less aero, but lets prioritize comfort, please. We also were a bit shocked at how bright the green frame was when it first came out of the box. But it quickly grew on us. Now we love it. It literally pops in any weather, from rain rides to sunshine. The green cockpit is a bit over the top, but a little more bar tape would sort that out too.Wilier Verticale SLR Pricing, availability & optionsThe new ultralight 2024 Wilier Verticale SLR is available as a frame kit starting at $6900 / 5800. - WWW.CYCLIST.CO.UKThe Wilier Verticale SLR is 10% lighter than the 0 SLRCyclistThe Wilier Verticale SLR is 10% lighter than the 0 SLRWiliers new Verticale SLR is a lightweight road bike that takes over from the 0 SLR as the brands climbing bike used by its two sponsored pro teams. Wilier says that the frameset weight is 156g lighter than the 0 SLR with new manufacturing techniques, a new fork, a new seatpost clamp design and new bar/stem.Complete bike prices for the Verticale SLR range from 9,000 to 12,500, while the frameset costs 5,500. Thats around 10% lighter than its most recent 0 SLR lightweight bike, launched in 2019, which the brand says weighed 1,819g for the complete frameset in size M. Wilier says that making a lightweight bike is easy the hard part is keeping performance ride qualities.Wilier started by speccing a range of high grade carbon fibre from Toray, one of the foremost carbon fibre manufacturers. The Verticale SLR frameset is made from a mix of T1100 and T800 high tensile strength fibre, along with M46JB high modulus carbon fibre, incorporated for torsional stiffness. The fibres are embedded in a special epoxy resin and the pre-preg cut into 400 pieces Wilier says its manufacturing technique for the Verticale SLR frameset uses pre-shaped pieces, which are placed in the mould before curing. Curing itself uses a process that Wilier calls Active Moulding. The bikes fork is asymmetric, being more overbuilt on the left side to handle the forces exerted by the brakes. It also has a new lay-up, with twisted carbon fibres to improve stress management when riding and braking. To that end, the fork crown has been redesigned too with a cone shape to improve stress distribution.Wilier says it has aero tested the Verticale SLR frame and ride position with its pro riders in the Silverstone Sports Engineering wind tunnel in the UK, a favourite of bike designers, although no numbers have been made public.Wilier Verticale geometryWilier has fine-tuned the Verticale SLRs geometry from the 0 SLR. Although the frame stack is the same, the reach has been reduced slightly on size XS and S frames and increased on XL and XXL frames. The handlebar geometry has also been adjusted, with the Verticale SLRs one-piece V-Bar bar/stem having a revised drop, reach and tilt angle. Wilier claims it has a weight of around 310g. Theres a 30mm flare from the tops to the drops, with the bar spreading below the hoods, which remain close to vertical. The flare results in a closer hand position when riding in the tops or the hoods, which is more aero while still keeping within the UCIs rules for pro races.Wilier makes the V-Bar in six sizes with bar widths of 37/40cm or 39/42cm and stem lengths between 90mm and 150mm.Theres a new clamping mechanism on the steerer tube too, with two alloy inserts that Wilier says improve force distribution and make it easier to replace the tightening mechanism. The hose routing system within the bars has also been updated for easier routing. The new handlebars are compatible with Wiliers other performance bikes. The bars can be fitted with Wiliers alloy out-front computer mount, which sits flush with the bars.Wilier Verticale design detailsThe Wilier 0 SLR had a characteristic block-shaped housing under the top tube for the seatpost clamp, which looked slightly out of place on the svelte frame. In the Verticale SLR, Wilier has redesigned the clamping mechanism, so that it tightens from below, rather than from above as was the case for the 0 SLR. The block under the top tube has gone and the new design saves weight.Wilier says that its new front derailleur hanger design also reduces weight while increasing versatility. While the 0 SLRs hanger was riveted to the frame in a static position, the Verticale SLRs hanger can be shifted between two positions on the seat tube, allowing it to work with standard cranksets from 50/34t, but also one with a 55t or 56t outer chainring, keeping the pros in Wiliers sponsored Astana Qazaqstan and Groupama-FDJ WorldTour teams happy.Wilier says that it has also redesigned the new bikes rear dropout and that the seatpost incorporates a mounting point for a rear light or a race number. The pros seem to like the new bike. According to Groupama-FDJs David Gaudu, It truly is an excellent bike for mountain stages. It will be my trusted companion through the Tour de France and I cant wait to test it during the mountain stages.Wilier Verticale SLR specs and pricesWilier will offer the Verticale SLR in seven specs at launch.Top spec is equipped with Campagnolo Super Record WRL and priced at $15,700 / 13,400. - TDAGLOBALCYCLING.COMSouth Korea: The Land Of The Morning CalmUPDATED June 25, 2024BY Michael CooINJourney to the East no comments South Korea: The Land Of The Morning CalmI was very fortunate to join the 2024 Journey to the East during their time in South Korea. Heres what I discoveredThe Land of Endless Bridges might be more appropriate. Ive never seen so many bridges: big and small, colourful and drab, long and short, ugly and beautiful. Koreas endless combination of rivers and mountains dictates the vast number of these structures.Truth be told, South Korea, the Land of the Morning Calm, isnt going to knock your socks off with its touristic highlights. There are no Great Pyramids or Eiffel Tower or Angkor Wat. Its attraction is much more subtle and as such, to me, can be much more rewarding. The Koreans do live up to the calm in the tour section name. They arent looking to impress you, to insist on your attention, to point out how wonderful their country is (sound like anyone you know?). They just get on with their lives and the result is, frankly, amazing. Our mechanic, Jordy from Scotland, on his first trip overseas was overwhelmed. He wondered if, perhaps, the Koreans could come to his country to show them how to go about building a wonderful nation.Sand scupltures (L), Haeridangil (R)For example, the end of this section of the Journey to the East Cycling Tour is in the port city of Busan, the countrys second largest metropolis. We stayed in the Haeundae beach area and I wandered along the beach, which was in the midst of a sandcastle building competition, before zigzagging inland. I happened upon an area called Haeridangil where some older buildings had been remodelled as tiny cafes, gift shops, restaurants and galleries. This wasnt mentioned in the guidebooks but it was just another example of the locals creating something specialand keeping it to themselves. You will also notice the presence of magpies, the unofficial National Bird called gachi in Korean. It is a symbol of good luck and of good news. In Gyeongju, a wonderful town full of history, they were the only ones allowed on the ancient burial tombs. The rest of us faced 2 years in jail!Korea is an aging country. In fact, it has one of the lowest, if not the lowest birth rate in the world. Outside of Busan and Seoul, you rarely saw any young people. The older adults are very active however, something the government strongly encourages. Almost every small town we cycled through had a busy Gate Ball Course. Essentially, golf for Korean seniors featuring large plastic golf balls. And it is free! In the countryside it is not uncommon to see older farmers using mobility devices to get out to the fields hoes/shovels attached! All hotel rooms have doorbells. No loud barbaric knocking here! And the toilets. And let me tell you about the toilets! Ill admit, I was scared to try the Enema button! It took me a while to notice but there are no 4th floor in hotels. After a little investigation I discovered it was because the character for 4 also translates to death.Bus stop in the apple orchard regionApples. I had absolutely no idea apples were a thing in this country. The Korean word for apple is sagwa which also happens to be the word for apology. Offered to those you have offended. If they take a bite, your apology is accepted. Our young driver was listening to this explanation grinned and said, Ive never offered anyone an apple. In Seoul, while visiting the stunning Gyeongbokgung Palace, we were introduced to the concept of hanbok. It refers to the traditional dress of the Korean people and at most historical sites, there are shops where visitors can rent outfits which they then wear while strolling through the grounds. It made our visit that much more realistic and for the locals, they benefited from free admission if they were dressed up.The countrys capital has a surprising amount of green space. To me, the most impressive was the Cheonggyecheon. Once a polluted stream paved over for an elevated expressway, it has been beautifully rehabilitated into an 11 km long riverside park through the centre of the city complete with wildlife, public art (including a incredible 190 m long 5000 tile documentary painting that recreates a royal procession) and meditation spaces. In fact, public art is everywhere. Even in the smaller towns along the route, you would find unexpected streets of murals or striking, and amusing, sculptures, reflecting the peoples rather whimsical sense of humour. Public pride is also illustrated by how clean Korea is. In Seoul, one of the biggest problems was trying to find a garbage can to dispose of any litter but despite their absence you could literally eat off the floor of the subway cars!Abandoned bunkers (L), Korean War Memorial (R)Of course, it is important to keep in mind that this beautiful, peaceful country remains in a official state of war with its recalcitrant neighbour to the north. A reminder of the amount of immense effort and sacrifice South Korea has put into building its remarkable society. No visit to Korea is complete with eating at a traditional BBQ restaurant ([hansikjib]). The hot coals area prepared by hand outside and then delivered to your communal table, along with a ridiculous amount of meat and an endless stream of side dishes. Add in a cold beer or a carafe of the local liquor, soju, and you have perfection!NirvanaIll add one more personal highlight that I think best illustrates the quirky nature of this fascinating country. On one riding day, we were cycling along happily when out of the corner of our eyes we saw something weird so, of course, we have to stop to explore. In the middle of nowhere, there was a pool of water surrounded by, yes, old car seats in which sat a number of men casting their lines into the water. We sat down in a couple of vacant seats (I think mine was from a Chevy minivan and it still even reclined) and simply watched. Some fishermen were snoozing but every now and then one line would go tight, a fish would be reeled in, and then released back into the water. So peaceful. So strange. So Korea.RELATEDTOURJourney to the EastWhile Korea and Japan are close neighbors, their lands and cultures are completely their own, and cycling across these countries one after the other... However, after a solid string of spring Classics results and a reliable ride at the Dauphin, he has been given the nod.The Ineos rider is a strong rouleur who will prove useful in the transitional stages. He will also act as a valiant helper, fetching bottles and taking early tows at the head of the peloton. He is one of the unsung heroes needed within a Grand Tour-winning squad, and could well get an opportunity or two in the breakaways.Jake Stewart, Israel-Premier TechLuc Claessen/Getty ImagesThe 24-year-old from Coventry Jake Stewart will make his Tour de France debut this year. Formerly of Groupama-FDJ, the Brit moved across to the UCI ProTeam Israel-Premier Tech last winter. At Groupama-FDJ, Stewart finished as runner-up at the Omloop Het Nieuwsblad in 2021 at the age of 21. In the following years, he took a stage at the Tour de lAin in both 2022 and 2023, though his results this year have not been at that same level. He has only finished one WorldTour race this season and his preparation was derailed further at the Tour de Suisse a week ago where he also abandoned.Stewart is a hardy sprinter. He can get his way over some tough hills, has a quick kick to him and hes capable enough to sprint without a lead-out train. Jakes best Grand Tour results have come in sprints previously at the Giro and Vuelta. A sixth place at the Rome sprint finale of the 2023 Giro is his current best result on a Grand Tour stage. Israel-Premier Tech are going all-in for stage wins, so expect Stewart to help lead out Pascal Ackermann in sprints and potentially feature in a few breakaways.Read our stage-by-stage guide to the 2023 Tour de FranceUnsure how to watch?
