Wilier's new Verticale SLR sheds weight and jumps aboard the flared-bar bandwagon
Wilier has launched its new Verticale SLR lightweight race bike, superseding the 0 SLR in its line-up ahead of the 2024 Tour de France. The bike is claimed to be almost 10% lighter than the outgoing 0 SLR, thanks to a new carbon layup, with an improved stiffness-to-weight ratio and overall ride quality. The Verticale SLR also sports a new integrated handlebar, a tweaked geometry (compared to the 0 SLR) and a series of smaller features designed to shed weight and improve reliability. The new bike is set to be ridden in the high mountains at the 2024 Tour de France by the Groupama FDJ and Astana Qazaqstan WorldTour teams. There are seven complete builds, starting out at 9,000 ($12,100 / 9,900) with a Shimano Ultegra Di2 R8100 groupset, rising to $15,700 (13,400) for a Campagnolo Super Record Wireless build (not available in the UK).You can read Ashley Quinlan's review of the new Verticale SLR here.Remodelled carbon frameThe Verticale SLR's frame uses a combination of Toray T800, T1100 and M46JB carbon fibre. - WilierWilier says that while the 0 SLR was used as its starting point for development, a number of changes have been made to improve its take on the ultra-light race bike formula. The frame is said to use a mix of Toray T800, T1100 and M46JB carbon fibre, laid up in specific (although undisclosed) locations. The brand says the T800 and T1100 materials are used for their high tensile strength, while M46JB is considered high-modulus and exhibits superior torsional stiffness. The new bike is said to be nearly 10 per cent lighter than the 0 SLR. - WilierEach frame is claimed to be made using 400 cut pieces of carbon, laid up with special epoxy resins for curing, using a process it calls Active Moulding.Wilier says this process involves the use of foam polymer moulds, which are said to adapt to the materials during the curing process, enabling it to cut excess weight.A Verticale SLR frame is said to weigh 648g in a size M. An equivalent 0 SLR frame weighed 766.5g, according to the brand.Wilier claims both deliver the same level of stiffness, equating to an improved stiffness-to-weight ratio.Wilier wants to reach a wider range of riders with the Verticale SLR. - WilierThe Italian brand also says it has worked on making the Verticale SLR more suitable for more riders.A new moveable front derailleur mount can be fixed into two positions and is said to enable the use of oversized chainrings (up to a 56-tooth outer chainring), while the rear dropouts are claimed to have been redesigned for greater reliability. The housing shape is claimed to reduce the chances of unwanted hanger rotation, while the hanger is designed to protrude inboard of the dropout for extra clearance between the chain and chainstay.Groupama FDJ and Astana Qazaqstan riders will be aboard the new bike in the Tour de France. - WilierThe proprietary seatpost is also available in two versions: zero and 15-degree setback, and includes a mounting point for a rear light or race number bracket. This is fastened by a new integrated seatpost clamp, said to contribute to the frames low weight, accessible from the underside of the top tube-seat tube junction.Up front, the fork has evolved, with a new 'twisted' brakeside fork leg. This is claimed to enable the carbon used in this area to be better optimised for the braking forces it has to withstand. An asymmetrical layout is present (thicker on the brakeside), but both fork legs also feature Kammtail (truncated aerofoil) profiling, which Wilier claims improves stiffness and brake feel (it makes no claims regarding aerodynamics). There's clearance for 32mm tyres. - WilierWilier also says the tall fork-crown profile improves strength, while tyre clearance is rated for 32mm tyres. The fork has a 1-1/4in steerer tube, which can be used with any of Wiliers existing road-going bars (for example, the Filante and Zero bars) and third-party cockpits with the help of an adaptor.Cut to accommodate 15mm of spacers, the fork weighs a claimed 296g, 24g less than the 0 SLRs fork in the same condition. At the centre, the frame sports a PF86.5 press-fit bottom bracket standard.GeometryThe seat tube angle is 73.5 degrees, while the head tube angle is a pretty slack 72.5 degrees. - WilierWilier says it has evolved the geometry compared to the 0 SLR, but has kept the stack the same.Responding to rider feedback, reach has been shortened on the smallest XS and S frames by a few millimetres, but lengthened on the largest XL and 2XL frames. In a size L (which broadly equates to a nominal size 56cm), the stack measures 559mm, with a 393mm reach. The seat tube angle is 73.5 degrees, while the head tube angle is 72.5 degrees. The latter is generally a little slacker than most race bikes. When paired with the forks 46mm rake, Wilier says the Verticale SLR is designed to offer stable handling characteristics, especially on fast descents. WilierThe Verticale SLR sports a new integrated carbon handlebar, called the V-Bar.Wilier says the new handlebars ergonomics were developed in partnership with the Groupama-FDJ pro cycling team, offering a narrower platform at the base of the hoods for more comfortable hand placement when in an aero-tuck position. The progression to the drops features a double-kink profile, proceeding downward before flaring out, then kinking back inwards at the drops. The shape is claimed to enable the shifter hoods to canter inwards by design (supporting riders looking for a more aerodynamic position), with the drops set 30mm further apart from the centre-to-centre measurement at the brake hoods.Wilier also says it increased the volume of the handlebar tops in order to help smooth the entry point of hydraulic brake hoses. At the steerer clamping zone, Wilier says it opted to use alloy inserts for the bolts to screw into, to help with clamping-force distribution on the carbon steerer, as well as being easier to replace when needed. The newly designed bar has a port for a GPS mount. - WilierThere are six sizes available: two measure 370mm centre-to-centre at the brake hoods, with 90 or 100mm stem lengths, and four feature a 390mm width, with 110, 120, 130 and 150mm stem-length options. The bar also features a port for a new out-front computer mount, which fits inside the bar (rather than underneath it), secured in place by two bolts on the underside.Wilier says the 370/100mm variant weighs 310g, complete with hardware that compares to 338.5mm for the 0 SLR handlebar (albeit in an unspecified size).Wilier Verticale SLR availability and pricesPrices start at 9,000 with Shimano Ultegra Di2 R8100. - WilierThe Wilier Verticale SLR is available now, and comes in seven complete builds and a frameset.Prices start at 9,000 ($12,100 / 9,900) for a Shimano Ultegra Di2 R8100-equipped build, rising to $15,700 (13,400) for a Campagnolo Super Record Wireless build. All come specced with Wilier sibling brand Miches Kleos wheelsets and Vittoria Corsa Pro TLR tyres.Importantly, Wilier says riders will have free choice of V-Bar size at point of purchase, while the choice of a zero-setback seatpost is subject to a little upcharge. The Campagnolo build isnt available in the UK.Wilier Verticale SLR specificationsWilier Verticale SLR Campagnolo Super Record WRLPrice: N/A / $15,700 / 13,400Frame: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonFork: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonGroupset: Campagnolo Super Record WRLPower meter: NoWheels: Miche Kleos RD 36Tyres: Vittoria Corsa Pro, 700 x 28cSeatpost: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonHandlebar/stem: Wilier V-Bar, carbonSaddle: Prologo Nago R4 PAS, carbon railsWilier Verticale SLR SRAM Red AXS w/power meterPrice: 12,500 / $15,300 / 13,000Frame: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonFork: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonGroupset: SRAM Red AXSPower meter: Yes, SRAM Red AXSWheels: Miche Kleos RD 36Tyres: Vittoria Corsa Pro, 700 x 28cSeatpost: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonHandlebar/stem: Wilier V-Bar, carbonSaddle: Prologo Nago R4 PAS, carbon railsWilier Verticale SLR Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9200 w/power meterPrice: 12,200 / $15,300 / 13,000Frame: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonFork: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonGroupset: Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9200Power meter: Yes, Shimano R9200-P cranksetWheels: Miche Kleos RD 36Tyres: Vittoria Corsa Pro, 700 x 28cSeatpost: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonHandlebar/stem: Wilier V-Bar, carbonSaddle: Prologo Nago R4 PAS, carbon railsWilier Verticale SLR Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9200Price: 11,000 / $14,500 / 12,200Frame: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonFork: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonGroupset: Shimano Dura-Ace Di2 R9200Power meter: NoWheels: Miche Kleos RD 36Tyres: Vittoria Corsa Pro, 700 x 28cSeatpost: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonHandlebar/stem: Wilier V-Bar, carbonSaddle: Prologo Nago R4 PAS, carbon railsWilier Verticale SLR SRAM Force AXS w/power meterPrice: 9,700 / $12,600 / 10,400Frame: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonFork: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonGroupset: SRAM Force AXSPower meter: Yes, SRAM Force AXSWheels: Miche Kleos 36Tyres: Vittoria Corsa Pro, 700 x 28cSeatpost: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonHandlebar/stem: Wilier V-Bar, carbonSaddle: Prologo Nago R4 PAS, carbon railsWilier Verticale SLR SRAM Force AXSPrice: 9,200 / $12,100 / 9,900Frame: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonFork: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonGroupset: SRAM Force AXSPower meter: NoWheels: Miche Kleos 36Tyres: Vittoria Corsa Pro, 700 x 28cSeatpost: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonHandlebar/stem: Wilier V-Bar, carbonSaddle: Prologo Nago R4 PAS, carbon railsWilier Verticale SLR Shimano Ultegra Di2 R8100Price: 9,000 / $12,100 / 9,900Frame: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonFork: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonGroupset: Shimano Ultegra Di2 R8100Power meter: NoWheels: Miche Kleos 36Tyres: Vittoria Corsa Pro, 700 x 28cSeatpost: Wilier Verticale SLR, carbonHandlebar/stem: Wilier V-Bar, carbonSaddle: Prologo Nago R4 PAS, carbon rails

Who are the favourites for the mens Tour de France 2024?
CyclistWho are the favourites for the mens Tour de France 2024?The Tour de France is back, thank god. With the return of the Tour comes predictions, speculation, rumour and guessing games of who will win the 2024 Tour de France. But why stab in the dark? Whether you go by consensus or bookmakers, there are clear favourites to win the famous yellow jersey and clear contenders to either challenge for that final podium spot or take their chance if the top two dont make it to Paris.Riders are desperately searching for underdog status ahead of this years Tour de France. A crash-marred spring and unfavourable preparations have meant that many riders are starting the Tour de France on disagreeable terms. With only a couple of days to go until the race starts in Florence, the clock is ticking for the favourites to get their act together ahead of the big send-off in Tuscany.By merging bookmakers consensus and GC record, weve considered every genuine contender who could feasibly win the general classification in the mens Tour de France 2024 and assessed their chances. Consider it a stab in the light. Our own predictions will follow later this week.Tour de France 2024 favouritesBarring incident, the yellow jersey will be worn by one of two men in Nice. You know them well after watching them clash over the past three Tours.Jonas VingegaardUNIPUBLIC / SPRINT CYCLING AGENCYSprintCyclingAgency2023Jonas Vingegaard has a lot to prove at this years Tour de France. After a serious crash at Itzulia Basque Country this spring, the two-time Tour champion has had a far from ideal build-up to his defence. Now even with Pogaar on two Tour wins apiece, Vingegaard will be hungry to prove that he is the best Tour de France rider of the 2020s.In 2023, Vingegaard looked unstoppable. A pragmatic Tour de France crescendoed in the Alps with a monstrous time-trial victory on Stage 16 in Combloux. He laid the final nails in the coffin of Pogaars chances on the Col de la Loze where he extended his lead by almost seven minutes. In Tour terms, it was seismic. If it werent for that crash in the spring, Vingegaard would be the out-and-out favourite. The Visma-Lease a Bike squad looks strong. Paris-Nice winner Matteo Jorgenson will be backed up in the mountain train by 2020 Giro podium finisher Wilco Kelderman and Slovenian Jan Tratnik. Wout van Aert returns from injury to prop up this team alongside Christophe Laporte on the hilly profiles. The only slight issue is Sepp Kusss late removal from the squad due to illness, hes replaced by Bart Lemmen. The Danes recent crashes will cloud all speculation, but he has been training again and seems fit enough to race. In due course, we will see the return of the ruthless Vingegaard.Rating: 5/5Tadej PogaarDario Belingheri/Getty ImagesThe bookies favourite is Tadej Pogaar. This is for good reason, he is the best cyclist around at the moment. The Slovenian has previously won two Tours de France and already has a Grand Tour under his belt this year. He looks untouchable on the climbs and his squad is packed full of talent.Pogaar was in imperious form earlier this season with Classics wins at Strade Bianche and Lige-Bastogne-Lige. He took this form into the Giro dItalia where he clinched six stage wins and the overall classification. It looked like the best Pogaar weve seen to date, but without a top-tier favourite to compete against, it was hard to know if he was Tour-level competitive.Much of the discourse last year was clouded by Pogaars wrist injury. There was also plenty of talk about him learning from his mistakes after being outplayed by Jumbo-Visma in 2022. What we saw last year was a man burnt out by the final week and Vingegaard saw his chance and took it. If Pogaar has improved on this flaw, then we could see the Slovenian claim the Giro-Tour double.UAE Team Emirates have brought a horrifyingly strong team. Pogaar will be backed by three Grand Tour podium finishers in the form of Joo Almeida, Juan Ayuso and third place finisher last year Adam Yates. The climbing support goes deeper still with Pavel Sivakov, Marc Soler and Tim Wellens. Will this team be enough? Has Pogaar learned from the last two Tours? Is he actually better than ever? Well see.Rating: 5/5Tour de France 2024: The B-Tier contendersBelow Pogaar and Vingegaard sit the other two Grand Tour galacticos: Remco Evenepoel and Primo Rogli. The duo have clashed over the past two seasons, first meeting at the 2022 Vuelta. They renewed their rivalry throughout the spring of 2023 at the Volta a Catalunya and later the Giro dItalia. Their paths have crossed already in 2024 at Paris-Nice and the Critrium du Dauphin. Both have Grand Tour wins on their palmars.Primo RogliA.S.O./Billy CeustersAfter a move in the winter to Bora-Hansgrohe soon to be renamed to Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe Primo Rogli will return to the Tour de France after being absent last year. The Slovenian infamously crumbled on La Planche des Belles Fille in 2020, becoming Tadej Pogaars first victim on the roads of the Tour de France. The following two years, Rogli crashed out of the race, failing to make it to Paris.Since his abandonment in 2022, the former ski jumper has clocked some big results, including a Giro dItalia win in 2023. In 2024, Rogli has been back to winning ways. After an underwhelming Paris-Nice, Rogli refound his mojo at the Critrium du Dauphin in typical Rogli style. The Bora leader claimed two mountain stages before almost losing the race on the final day to Matteo Jorgenson. The parcours suits Rogli. A favourable amount of time-trialling in the first week and a couple of Rogli-tailored hilly stages could suit the Slovenian. Alongside Giro champion Jai Hindley and former top five finisher Sasha Vlasov, Bora are taking their chances seriously. Rogli hasnt beaten Vingegaard or Pogaar since changing teams, but that could all start at the Tour.Rating: 3.5/5Remco EvenepoelA.S.O./Billy CeustersFrom Belgium, Remco Evenepoel will provide cyclings cultural homeland with a Tour contender. At the age of 24, Evenepoel will be making his long-awaited Tour de France debut this year.So far in 2024, Evenepoel has had a less-than-ideal run-up to the Grand Boucle. A crash in Itzulia Basque Country saw the Soudal-QuickStep leader break his collarbone. Not long after, Evenepoel returned to racing at the Dauphin. There, he earned a stage win and a top-ten finish in the GC. His climbing results were not convincing, however.Remco will enter the Tour de France as the reigning world time-trial champion. These capabilities will come in handy on Stage 7s long time-trial around Burgundys vineyards. Otherwise, he will look to capitalise on his good Classics legs early with the rolling profiles of the Italian Grand Dpart. He starts the Tour alongside Basque nearly-man Mikel Landa and doppelgnger Ilan van Wilder as mountain support. QuickStep have never won the Tour de France, usually opting for sprint finishes and breakaway exploits. The Evenepoel project has a lot resting on it and his Tour discovery will be telling.Rating: 3/5Tour de France 2024: Outside betsAt the Tour de France as with any bike race anything can happen. Weve seen plenty of pre-race favourites crash out early on in the past. Although most talk is about the big four, there are plenty of outsiders who can upset the apple cart at the Tour de France.Carlos RodrguezA.S.O./Charly LopezIneos Grenadiers upcoming star Carlos Rodrguez will be hoping to replicate the Team Sky successes of the 2010s.2024 has continued in winning ways for Rodrguez who himself won a stage in Morzine last year. He romped home with the Tour de Romandie title and struck gold again with an impressive stage win earlier this month at the Dauphin.Flanked by former Tour winners Egan Bernal and Geraint Thomas as well as Tom Pidcock and Laurens De Plus, Rodrguez has some real stars to help him on the climbs. A bonus for the squad is that the 23-year-old is still eligible for the white jersey, and with no Pogaar in that competition this year, he has a serious chance to clinch that one.Rating: 2/5Adam YatesA.S.O./Oman Cycling Association/Thomas MaheuxNow, for the enemies within UAE Team Emirates. Adam Yates leads the charge after a third place finish last year. The Brit has shown some real strength recently with an overall win and a handful of stage wins at the Tour de Suisse a couple of weeks ago. If Pogaar crumbles with fatigue, then Yates could be given the green light to go for his own GC chances. Like last year, Yates could easily waltz onto the final podium if hes up there supporting his Slovenian leader.Rating: 2/5Juan AyusoUNIPUBLIC / SPRINT CYCLING AGENCYLike Yates, Ayuso will be riding for Pogaar. Like Yates, Ayuso has also finished on the podium at a Grand Tour.Although still young, Ayuso has been building on his experience this year in UCI WorldTour stage races. The youngster earned a big win at the Itzulia Basque Country earlier this year a race won by Vingegaard last year and secured a silver medal at Tirenno-Adriatico in March. He crashed out of the Dauphin recently, but he was spotted at altitude in Isola with Pogaar last week.Ayuso can time-trial and he can diesel his way to the front. His sprint is decent and hes become more savvy in races. Expect the unexpected.Rating: 2/5Richard CarapazA.S.O./Billy CeustersEF Education-EasyPosts hopes rest on former Giro winner Richard Carapaz. In the recent series of Netflixs Unchained, Jonathan Vaughters said that Carapaz is the most expensive rider the team has ever taken on.The Ecuadorian has been given a lot of support at EF over the past year, but his results have not mirrored this optimism. A lower table top-ten at the Tour de Romandie showed some signs of form, but a recent Tour de Suisse abandonment leaves us lukewarm. Carapaz hasnt finished a Grand Tour since 2022, so he will be under the radar. This will also be Carapoazs final Tour in the golden helmet before handing that over to one of his colleagues at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.Rating: 1.5/5Simon YatesLuc Claessen/Getty ImagesTwin to podium finisher Adam, Simon Yates will be expecting a triumphant swan song to his long tenure at Jayco-AlUla before he becomes another Visma domestique next season.Often overlooked, Yates finished in fourth last year. Most of that time was gained with a stellar performance on the queen stage to Courchevel. In 2024, however, he will need to do more to end up in the same GC position.Hes only Yates to win a Grand Tour but Simon has only taken one win so far this year, at the AlUla Tour, the home race of the teams Saudi Arabian co-sponsor. He has been tuning up at an altitude camp, but recent snubs at stage races point towards a downward turn in form. Yates can pull a performance out the bag. Hes also known to excel on the roads of the Tour de France, having won a white jersey and two stages in the past. However, we know Simon Yates. He isnt a Tour de France winner.Rating: 1/5Enric MasUNIPUBLIC / SPRINT CYCLING AGENCYMovistars steady engine Enric Mas is returning to the Tour de France one year after crashing out on Stage 1. The Catalan rider has given us some hope in the past having finished inside the top ten in the 2020 and 2021 Tours. Hes also a tried and tested Vuelta star having made the podium there on three occasions.Dont expect to see Mas attacking, he barely does. Hell stick to the wheels and hope for a strong top ten finish. A reinvigorated Davide Formolo will attempt to tow Mas up the climbs, but when it comes down to it, Movistar havent clicked at the Tour in recent years.Rating: 1/5Whos being overlooked?A.S.O./Billy CeustersPogaars teammate JooAlmeida is likely to be a pivotal domestique, but he could sneak onto the podium if his rivals arent careful. Also, Matteo Jorgenson of Visma-Lease a Bike could test the waters and attempt a top ten in the GC. Similarly, domestiques Sasha Vlasov and Hindley could contend for the top 5 if Rogli crashes again on French roads.French hopes will be pinned on Romain Bardet and David Gaudu. The former will be competing at his last Tour de France having announced his retirement after next years Dauphin. The Cyclist PredictionA.S.O./Pauline BalletJonas Vingegaard will be victorious at the last minute, taking back minutes in the final three stages of the Tour.Pogaar has shown signs of weakness during the final weeks mountain stages at the last two Tours de France. Ayuso and Yates cant save him if Vingegaard decides to capitalise on that. I understand that Vingegaard is coming in with an injury, but I can see a clich scenario of him riding into form once the race gets into the nitty gritty of the final week. Stage 21s time-trial around Nice will be Vingegaards crowing moment and the Dane will earn a third consecutive yellow jersey. The rest of the podium will be filled by Slovenians. Tadej Pogaar comes home in second and Primo Rogli somehow manages to reach third place ahead of a barrage of UAE riders in the middle ranks of the top ten.In reality, this crystal ball will shatter when the live broadcast cuts to Vingegaard getting dropped on the Col du Galibier on Stage 4. Never say never, Chris Froome has done crazier things.Need to know whats at stake? Read our guide to the Tour de France prize money.
