    Ringsend to Point Village walking and cycling bridge project expands to include road widening on existing bridge, new control tower
    Long-awaited plans for a walking and cycling bridge alongside the Tom Clarke Bridge (East Link) are progressing, with an anticipated opening date of around 2029. However, the project has also expanded to include road widening on the existing bridge which will also require a new bridge control building.The walking and cycling bridge will be a separate bridge, called the Point Bridge. But, as with many active travel projects undertaken by Dublin City Council, the project has morphed into a wider project which is now called the Point Bridge and Tom Clarke Bridge Widening Project.The new Point Bridge will also be a lifting bridge and include future-proofing with a 5.3m wide cycle path and 4.6m wide footpath.Its understood that part of the reason for a separate walking and cycling bridge was originally to simplify the projects delivery compared to adding structures to the existing Tom Clarke Bridge.The widening of the projects scope follows the examples of other city council projects, including the Clontarf cycle route project, which expanded into a massive wall-to-wall street renewal project. The same thing happened with the Liffey Cycle Route project, which was expanded into the Liffey Corridor project, where costs ballooned to above 100m before the project was cancelled in favour of a more cost-effective approach.A Dublin City Council Active Travel office update on the East Link bridge project said: It is also proposed to upgrade the existing Tom Clarke Bridge by widening the northern and southern bridge decks. The works will include replacing elements of the bridge deck furniture such as barriers, lighting columns and traffic lights.This widening of the bridge decks will mean the removal of the existing control building, which is located on the bridge and the building of a planned replacement control tower between the two bridges.Dublin City Council said: It is anticipated that construction works will commence in 2027 and last approximately 24 months. During construction, traffic on East Wall Road, the R131 and North Wall Quay will be maintained at all times, except for limited short periods.Early-stage public consultation is planned for the project is planned next week from 4-7pm on Tuesday, June 18th at the Ringsend & Irishtown Community Centre, 22 Thorncastle St, Dublin 4, D04 Y6V3, and from 4-7pm on Wednesday, June 19th, at the Sen OCasey Community Centre, 18-26 St Marys Rd, Dublin, D03 AY74.More drawings and details can be found at consultation.dublincity.ie.

The 6D ATB-2T MTB helmet also has its own ODS impact protection system.Meanwhile, the Airnoggin urban helmet is inflatable, allowing you to fold it down when not in use, but it is still five-star rated by Virginia Tech. Some helmet makers, such as Kask, largely forego MIPS, preferring to test their helmets to the WG11 rotational impact test standard. Kask claims that the headform used in the WG11 test better reflects what happens in real-life crashes than the standard headforms used in most testing.The majority of tested helmets rank highlyYou don't have to spend a fortune to get a safe helmet. - GiantAnother takeaway is just how many helmets are highly ranked by Virginia Tech. Its methodology includes a formula to assign a star rating, so its not just an arbitrary number.Of the 228 helmets tested, 137 were rated five stars thats 60 per cent. A further 55 or 24 per cent were rated four stars. This means, overall, 84 per cent of the helmets tested achieved Virginia Techs recommended level of five- or four-star protection.You dont have to spend a fortune to get a helmet that will protect you well either. Virginia Tech quotes a price of just $65 for the fifth-rated road helmet, the Giant Rev Comp MIPS, and there are highly-ranked MTB and urban helmets that cost less than $100 too.

    Hang around bikes long enough, and youll probably see a tall bike or two. These creations are exactly as they sound taller than average bikes, usually cobbled together from multiple donor bikes. Often, tall bikes require a creative solution to starting and stopping, but nothing like the most recent Guinness World Record attempt. According to Guinness, the record-breaking bike started as a friendly bet made at a pub between Nicolas Barrioz and David Peyrou. The two Frenchmen then set out to build Starbike, which is now officially the worlds tallest rideable bike at 25 5 (7.77m), breaking the previous record by 1 2 (36cm).The massive bike has everything youd expect from a normal bike, including two wheels, a saddle, a bar, working brakes with brake levers at the bars, and a crank that propels the rear wheel by a massive 53 chain! To earn the record, the bike had to be ridden a distance of 100 meters. To make sure no one died in the process, David was required to wear a safety harness attached to a zipwire (which Guinness points out did not assist in the cyclists balance in any way). The result is a new Guinness World Record.
