- WWW.CYCLIST.CO.UKThe biggest breakthroughs of the 2026 pro cycling seasonCyclistThe biggest breakthroughs of the 2026 pro cycling seasonEvery season sees a crop of new pro cycling stars emerge, with young riders coming of age to bring fresh faces the fore in the worlds biggest races.Last year saw the likes of Isaac del Toro, Matthew Brennan, Florian Lipowitz and Oscar Onley catapulted into the cycling spotlight with breakthrough performances, and 2026 saw another highly talented group of youngsters competing for victories and playing their part in writing the stories of the season.Paul Seixas (Decathlon CMA CGM)Xavier PereyronPaul Seixass potential has been long discussed, and after capping off his debut pro season in 2025 with third in the European Championships and seventh at Il Lombardia the hype grew to unprecedented levels. He didnt shirk away from it though, he embraced it. He burst into life in 2026, starting the year off with a strong second at the Volta ao Algarve, finishing second behind Tadej Pogaar at Strade Bianche, dominating Itzulia and romping up the Mur de Huy to win La Flche Wallonne before another runners-up sport to Pogaar at Lige-Bastogne-Lige. He was met with a hiccup at the Tour Auvergne-Rhne-Alpes though, being forced to abandon on Stage 8, just three weeks out from the most highly anticipated Tour de France debut in living memory.Nevertheless he lined up at the Grand Dpart in Barcelona as not only the youngest rider on this years cohort, but the youngest in almost nine decades to grace the field. Shouldering the mantle of youth seemed to work in his favour, however, with limited expectations despite the fanfare. But you dont get to Seixass level by settling for a participation medal, and he was open about riding for GC in his very first Tour. He stayed consistent without going into the red, sitting tenth in GC after the opening TTT and never dropping lower. Four top tens in the opening week and third to Le Lioran brought him into the top five, and third on Le Markstein pushed him into fourth overall suddenly the concept of a podium felt realistic. He remained solid through the mountains and gave everything in an all-or-nothing effort on Stage 20 to try to put Isaac del Toro under pressure, but had to settle for fourth. A valiant effort and a tantalising sign of whats to come.Cramp would scupper his hopes in the dying kilometres of the World Championship Road Race and Seixas would give an overly harsh assessment of his performance however there was one last opportunity for a win in 2026. Il Lombardia would not see a sixth consecutive victory for Tadej Pogaar after crashing out of the Vuelta, so the final Monument of the season was there for the taking. Seixas made his move with the race still together on the Civiglio, powering up the climb with riders dropping off his wheel one by one before he found himself alone with jusst 18km to ride to the line in Como. One Monument already in the bag, and hes just getting warmed up. Watch out 2027.Paula Blasi (UAE Team LImad)Unipublic / Cxcling / Angel CamarenaPaula Blasi only joined the WorldTour midway through 2025. Did she need much time to settle in? No.She started the season well, with third place at the Tour Down Under, but her first big results came in the Ardennes, taking a shock solo win at Amstel Gold Race and proved it was no fluke with third at La Flche Wallonne and fifth at Lige.Fresh off those results, it was time for her debut Grand Tour at La Vuelta Femenina. Blasi stayed steady in the GC throughout the race, holding around tenth until the final two stages and the mountains. She catapulted up the standings on Stage 6 after taking second place on Les Praeres behind Anna van der Breggen and put in a huge performance on the final stage up the Alto de lAngliru, again finishing second but defeat cycling great Van der Breggen to take a famous overall victory. It felt as though she couldnt stop winning after that, adding victories at the one-day Durango Durango Emakumeen Saria and GC wins with impressive climbing displays at the Volta a Catalunya and the Tour Fminin des Pyrnes. Then next up was the Tour de France Femmes.UAE Team LImad came to the race with a stacked squad, including newly crowned Vuelta winner Blasi, two-time Giro dItalia victor Elisa Longo Borghini, the 2025 Tours fourth overall Dominika Wodarczyk, World Championship Road Race bronze medallist Mavi Garca, and last years breakout star with back-to-back breakaway stage wins MavaSquiban.Despite her clear form, both Blasi and the team controversially insisted she was only there for experience and to help her teammates, and ultimately Longo Borghini finished a career best third overall with Blasi two spots further back in fifth, even after appearing to sacrifice her own chances along the way.Blasi will join Movistar on a three-year deal from 2027, after splitting with UAE mid-contract. Will Tour freedom see her take another leap next year?Afonso Eullio(Bahrain Victorious)Tim de Waele/Getty ImagesOnly one rider can win the Giro dItalia, but sometimes another riders performance grabs more of the attention, and in 2026 Afonso Eulliowas the talk of the town.Eulliofound himself with newfound freedom early on after Bahrain Victorious leader Santiago Buitrago abandoned on Stage 2, and didnt wait to take his chance. He got into the two-man breakaway with UAEs Igor Arrieta and, despite a chaotic finale in which both riders crashed, they had enough of a gap for Eullio to end the day in the maglia rosa. He wasnt going to let the jersey go easily either, valiantly defending his lead over multiple mountain stages, remaining in pink for over a week until Jonas Vingegaard finally took control of the race. But Eullios job wasnt done. Still in a strong GC position and in the white jersey, he persisted, impressively fighting on to score sixth overall in only his second ever Grand Tour.Antonia Niedermaier (Canyon-SRAM)A.S.O./Gatan FlammeCanyon-SRAM might be losing Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney in 2027, but this season proved they have another excellent GC prospect in 23-year-old Antonia Niedermaier. The Germans talents were already well known, with several notable Giro dItalia performances in her young career, but 2026 solidified her status as a real challenger for Grand Tour glory. She started the season strongly with consistent stage race performances including fourth at Valenciana and fifth at Itzulia, but came alive at the Giro. Off the back of fifth overall in 2025, Niedermaier entered the race as Canyon-SRAMs leader and catapulted into the top five with fourth place on Stage 4s uphill time-trial. She wouldnt look back from there. On the shortened Queen Stage to the Colle delle Finestre, Niedermaier looked comfortable in the lead group of four, and on the chaotic final stage was part of the key move that split the race up early on, ultimately finishing the stage in third to move up to second on the final podium.Following that success, she was called up to the Tour de France squad as Niewiadoma-Phinneys mountain domestique, but found herself in fourth overall after the punchy Stage 5. She lost one place the following day to Elisa Longo Borghini and rode to a strong sixth on Mont Ventoux, with Niewiadoma-Phinney taking the stage and overall lead up the road. Another pair of solid performances in Nice saw Niedermaier retake fourth place with Marlen Reusser slip down the standings to make it two Canyon-SRAM riders in the top five and secure the white jersey in the process.Davide Piganzoli (Visma-Lease a Bike)Sara Cavallini/Getty ImagesThis season marked Davide Piganzolis first season at the WorldTour level having joined from Polti VisitMalta, and he lined up at the Giro dItalia with team leader Vingegaard as the hot favourite for the pink jersey. Vingegaard eventually rode away with the lead with ease, but behind him Piganzoli was writing his own story too.Continuing to ride after leadout his team leaders attacks, Piganzoli was a warrior over those three weeks. Third on Corno alle Scale, fourth at Pila and top ten results in the mountains at Car, Pian di Pezz and Piancavallo had many wondering just how far he could go. He couldnt quite catch Eullio to steal the white jersey but he ended the race eighth overall, giving Visma even more cause for celebration after securing the pink jersey with Vingegaard.Piganzolis 2026 didnt end there though, he ended up winning two stage races after his impressive Giro in La Route dOccitanieand the Tour de Luxembourg, with another less successful domestique stint at the Tour de France sandwiched in between, and he then topped his season off by beating Tom Pidcock to win the Giro dellEmilia at the start of October.Isabella Holmgren (Lidl-Trek)A.S.O./Billy CeustersIsabella Holmgrens impressive rise continued in 2026. The Canadian raced to seventh on debut at the Giro dItalia in 2025 and returned this year off the back of a strong showing in the Ardennes with ninth at Fleche and sixth at Liege. The 2025 Tour de lAvenir winner rose to fourth overall on Stage 5 and held on through tough stages including a very close second place behind Demi Vollering on the Colle delle Finestre. On the final day Holmgren got caught on the wrong side of the decisive split and slipped from fourth overall to seventh, but held on to the white jersey with a performance to be proud of going into the summer. Her debut at the Tour de France Femmes came next and shed end the race eighth overall after a few standout performances including fifth on Stage 5 and sixth on Stage 9, where she attacked from the lead group securing the days combativity prize in the process. She finished the season with the silver medal at the U23 World Championships at home in Canada, and goes into 2027 with a few new faces on the team including Tour runner-up Niewiadoma-Phinney,with whom she should form a fearsome duo next summer.Jakob Omrzel (Bahrain Victorious)Unipublic / Cxcling / Antonio BaixauliThis was Jakob Omrzels first year on the WorldTour with Bahrain Victorious. Despite only turning 20 years old in March, the Slovenian was put to work in second tier races and wasted no time making his mark with a sixth place at the Tour of the Alps, eighth at the Tour de Hongrie and podium at the Tour of Slovenia, and he then raced to second and third in the Slovenian National Championships road race and time-trial respectively. From there it was time for his Grand Tour debut at the Vuelta a Espaa. After a slow start in the opening stages, Omrzel nestled into the breakaway on Stage 7 and finished fourth on the summit finish at Aramn Valdelinares to move to 11th overall. A couple of flat days to placate the sprinters preceded but he found himself up into the top ten in the second week. The end of week two saw Stage 12s Queen Stage in the south of Spain, with over 4,500m on the menu including the Alto de Velefique and a summit finish on Calar Alto. Omrzel once again got himself into the days move, and with compatriot Tadej Pogaar out of the race, the stage was there for the taking. He shook off Equipo Kern Pharmas Urko Berrade on Calar Alto to solo to a memorable victory, finishing almost two minutes ahead of Berrade by the top, hauling himself into sixth overall. He would end the Vuelta just one place lower in seventh after Sepp Kusss Hail Mary on the penultimate stage.A young Slovenian climber with a breakthrough Vuelta? Sounds familiarClia Gery (FDJ United-Suez)A.S.O./Gatan FlammeIn just her second pro season, former U23 World Champion Clia Gery took a massive step forward to become one of the strongest riders in the peloton. The Frenchwoman spent most of the season helping Demi Vollering to world domination with FDJ United-Suez, but along the way managed to win Brabantse Pijl, a stage of the Giro and the French National Championships Road Race as well as finishing just outside the top ten at Paris-Roubaix, claim a further three top tens at the Giro, and take second overall at the Volta a Catalunya. And all of that was before the Tour de France came around. At the Tour she was vital to Vollerings yellow jersey victory, with her most impactful moment coming on Stage 8 when she delivered her teammate into the bottom of the days final climb at the front of the peloton, and from there the maillot jaune was secured. After her next race of Koppenbergcross this weekend, Gery will be forced to pull the plug on her cyclocross season to have iliac artery surgery. At just 20 years old, Gery has a massive future ahead of her.Jarno Widar (Lotto Intermarch)Dario Belingheri/Getty ImagesJarno Widar came into his debut pro season having been Belgiums most hyped talent for the last few years. After a slow start to the year albeit with a handful of good results he really began to force his name into conversations in the latter half of the season. At the Vuelta, his debut Grand Tour, he started to warm up, taking second in Andorra on Stage 4 behind only Pogaar, seventh in the hectic finish on Alto de Aitana won by Enric Mas, and fourth on Stage 13, won by Wout van Aert. That was just the start of his late-season rise though, he came alive in the Italian Classics, storming past Tom Pidcock and Matteo Jorgenson to win the thrilling three-man sprint at Tre Valli Varesine. He then put Pidcock to the sword again a week later to win the Queen Stage and GC at the Tour of Guangxi. Hes fought off early claims of being Belgiums next big GC rider, instead claiming hes a puncheur, but either way, hes one heck of an entertainer. The post The biggest breakthroughs of the 2026 pro cycling season appeared first on Cyclist.0 Yorumlar 0 hisse senetleri 40 Views
