'It was phenomenal' Great Britain earn two gold medals on second day of Track World Championships
Great Britain won two gold medals in the space of 20 minutes at the UCI Track World Championships in Shanghai, China on Thursday. Matt Bostock earned the nations first rainbow jersey of the championships with a hard-fought victory in the mens scratch race. A quarter of an hour later, the British womens team pursuit squad then set out and dominated their final against Italy, leading for more than three quarters of the 4km event, and winning by over five seconds with a 4:04.610. The quartet in the final included three riders who won the European title and set a world record in February Anna Morris, Josie Knight and Millie Couzens plus 19-year-old Erin Boothman, a four-time junior world champion. Megan Barker was also part of the winning team, having ridden in the first round earlier in the day."It was phenomenal," said the now three-time world champion Knight. "Last year, when we came third, we really wanted more. To come back this year and win in the way we did, with a fresh new team obviously, me, Meg and Anna have been doing it a while, but these two [Boothman and Couzens], its their first senior World Championships to come home with a gold is really special."Morris explained that the team's strategy in the final was to "come home like a train". That responsibility fell on Knight, Couzens and Boothman, the latter two on their senior Worlds debuts. "Im over the moon to even be riding with these girls, Boothman said. To come here, get the experience to even ride with them, but then to come away from gold is super special.Great Britain have now won the women's team pursuit nine times since the event was introduced to the Track Worlds in 2008, making them the most successful nation. Germany earned the bronze medal in Shanghai. Bostock in control(Image credit: Alex Whitehead/SWpix)While the team pursuit gold medal was a collective effort, Bostocks was one of individual brilliance. The Manxman animated the 40-lap scratch race from the beginning, before setting off solo after the breakaway Alex Vogel (Switzerland) around the halfway mark, and catching and passing him with around 10 laps remaining. Bostock then ploughed on at the front of the race to hold off the bunch by more than half a lap. Tom Sexton (New Zealand) finished second, with Lindsay De Vylder (Belgium) in third. "Its been a dream ever since I was a kid," Bostock said of his maiden world title."I stepped away from track and watched my partner [Megan Barker] at the Olympics and thought, You know what, Ill give it a go in the next few years and see where it could take me. A couple of years on, Ive got myself a world title. I couldnt be happier." Curiously, Bostock went on to explain that he wasn't originally meant to be in the British team for this week's Worlds. He also only got the call-up to race the scratch the night before. "After the Commonwealth Games [where Bostock won the points race] it was the plan to miss this and focus on next year," he said. "It's been, honestly, crazy." Danish pursuit supremacy(Image credit: Simon Wilkinson/SWPix)Also on Thursday, Denmark claimed the mens team pursuit title for the fourth consecutive year, romping past an Italian quartet that counted Filippo Ganna and Jonathan Milan. The team of Rasmus Pedersen, Frederik Madsen, Lasse Norman Leth and Carl-Frederik Bvort won with a comfortable five-second margin, clocking 3:40.865 in the final. The time put them within a second of their own world record 3:39.977 set, like the British women, at the European Championships in Konya, Turkey, in February. [The time is impressive] especially considering the circumstances of this track, said Pedersen. Its maybe not the fastest track, but we executed the perfect race. We have a great team. The bronze medal ride-off swung the way of Great Britain who, despite trailing for the middle two kilometres, overhauled their race against France to win by more than three seconds with a 3:47.245. The British team consisted of brothers Noah and Henry Hobbs, Ethan Vernon, Ollie Wood, and Bostock, who rode in the first round on Wednesday. Kopecky eliminates all(Image credit: Simon Wilkinson/SWPix)Elsewhere, Lotte Kopecky cruised to her third elimination race world title. The Belgian fended off Japans Yumi Kajihara in the final two, with the USAs Megan Jastrab rounding out the podium. A world title is always special. Its one of my favourite disciplines on the track so its really nice to get a win here today, said Kopecky, who missed last years event due to a fracture in her back. Abi Miller, Britains 18-year-old senior Track Worlds debutant, placed ninth. In the mens keirin, Harrie Lavreysen collected his second world title of the championships, a day after winning the team sprint with the Netherlands. The Japanese sprint event now makes up six of the Dutchmans record 22 track world titles. Max Dornbach (Germany) came second and Shinji Nakano (Japan) third. No British man made it into the quarterfinals of the keirin. The nations hopes had been pinned on the European champion Matthew Richardson, until he was sent home on Monday amid reports of serious misconduct regarding discriminatory posts and behaviour.Richardsons withdrawal from the squad came too late for Great Britain to swap another rider into the event. Olympic team sprint champions Emma Finucane and Sophie Capewell powered through the first rounds of the individual sprint and will compete against each other in the semi-finals on Friday. Finucane is already a two-time world champion in the event. The other womens sprint semi-final will be made up of Chinas Yuan Liying and Japans Mina Sato.

    Surly Preamble Review: Material Conditions
To replace one of its most beloved bikes, Surly launched the Preamble in 2023 as a light-duty commuter. With minor geometry changes, disc brakes, and an equally enticing price point, its unclear whether the Preamble can match the acclaim its predecessor, the Cross-Check, earned. Nic spent some time with this commuter-focused budget bike to see what works and what doesnt on one of the most affordable production bikes on the marketThe post Surly Preamble Review: Material Conditions appeared first on BIKEPACKING.com.

This Full-Suspension, Dropper-Equipped Scott E-Ville eBike Could Be the Perfect Commuter
Scotts urban e-bike push just got more interesting, care of an all-new E-Ville. Fresh off the Sweep commuter line launched in July around Boschs new Hub Line motors, the bikemaker has unveiled the E-Ville for 2027. The new mid-drive E-Ville is a full-suspension, low step-through e-bike that borrows more from the trail than the bike lane.MY27 Scott E-Ville full-suspension commuter ebike(Photos / Scott)Scott says the E-Ville is the one bike for everything: the grocery run, the commute, and the Ill just take the long way home detour that turns into two hours. To make that work, the E-Ville gets a 6061 alloy frame with a side-extraction downtube battery, an adjustable stem, and a Syncros dropper post. Yes, a dropper on a step-through commuter, which is totally a solid idea. The addition of a dropper on a commuter makes sitting flat-footed at stops much easier. Tap a button at the light, drop the saddle, and plant your foot like youve done this before.Bosch Performance CX Power for Both ModelsPower comes from a Bosch Performance Line CX, which delivers up to 100Nm of torque. Battery size depends on the model: 800Wh on the E-Ville 10 SUV and 720Wh on the E-Ville 20. Both can also add a Bosch PowerMore external range extender to go further. The ebikes full-suspension will also be a welcome addition for some commuters, as back comfort is usually a big deal. The new E-Villes rear suspension is classy and clean in its tidy execution. The rear shock is tucked inside the frame, just like on their Bold-inspired mountain bikes. So it stays out of the grimy street spray and, ideally, out of the repair stand. Plus, it adds a clean, fancy, and high-tech aesthetic. You didnt even notice that it was a full-suspension at first, did you?Scott E-Ville 10 SUVThe 10 SUV is the more capable of the two. It gets a 120mm RockShox Recon Silver RL fork, 100mm of rear travel from an SR Suntour Raidon shock inside the frame, 60mm wide Schwalbe Advancer all-terrain tires, a Shimano Cues 11-speed drivetrain, and a Bosch Kiox 300 display. It comes in tawny green or peach pink.FeaturesAll-terrain tires120mm front and 100mm rear suspension travelBosch 800Wh batteryBosch Kiox 300 displayThe Scott E-Ville 20The E-Ville 20 is the urban-leaning version, with 100mm front and rear travel, an SR Suntour XCM34 air fork and the same rear shock, Schwalbe Big Apple Performance tires, a 10-speed Cues drivetrain, and a Bosch Purion 200 display. It comes in tungsten grey or silt green.FeaturesUrban tires100mm front and rear suspension travelBosch 720Wh batteryBosch Purion 200 displayBrakes, Battery, Relaxed Geometry & BitsBoth models stop with Shimano four-piston MT4120 brakes and 180mm rotors. This seems like more than adequate for a bike that can weigh over 66lbs (30kg). Scott lists claimed weights of 68.7lbs (31.16kg) for the 10 SUV and 69lbs (31.3kg) for the 20.E-Ville 10 SUVE-Ville 20The E-Ville geometry seems a bit more relaxed than youd expect from a commuter. A 66 head angle (66.5 on the 20 with the shorter travel fork), 76 seat angle, and a low bottom bracket around 326 to 331 mm should make it stable and easy to live with. Frame sizes run S to XL, and all roll on 29-inch wheels. The everyday stuff is covered, too: a Racktime SNAPIT 2.0 rear rack, integrated front and rear lights, full fenders, and an SP Connect phone mount integrated on top of the stem. Its a bike built to do just about anything you can think of on a random Tuesday. It certainly looks like a great all-rounder commuter.Scott hasnt shared pricing or availability yet. Given the spec, expect it to sit well above entry-level commuters. Well update when we hear more.Hit the link for more info, as well as spec details. Scott-Sports.com

Vin Denson, pioneering British rider and Tom Simpson's close friend, dies aged 90
Vin Denson, who died on Wednesday 14 October aged 90, was the last survivor of the pioneering generation of British professional cyclists who established themselves at the highest level of European road racing during the 1950s and 1960s.Alongside Brian Robinson, Tom Simpson and Barry Hoban, Denson helped open doors for the generations of British cyclists who followed. Born in Chester, he developed his strength in the fiercely competitive world of British time trialling, track and road racing before crossing the Channel to pursue his ambitions.Denson became one of professional cycling's most respected domestiques, riding for two of the sport's greatest champions, Rik Van Looy and Jacques Anquetil. His finest years came with Anquetil's Ford France team in 1965 and 1966. "It was like being with Manchester United," Denson recalled. The riders were treated as celebrities, once attending a reception with Prince Rainier and Princess Grace in Monaco. But behind the glamour lay extraordinary hard work.In May 1965, Denson played a crucial role in one of cycling's greatest feats. Anquetil won the mountainous Critrium du Dauphin, then travelled overnight to Bordeaux to contest the 584-kilometre Bordeaux-Paris classic, starting at one o'clock the following morning.Denson and Jean Stablinski were entrusted with shepherding their exhausted leader through the night."Jacques was riding so close to me his shoulder would occasionally brush mine," Denson recalled. "To help him I pushed him for long stretches." At one point Anquetil leaned against Denson, apparently falling asleep while still riding. Somehow, he recovered and completed his historic double. The following year Denson made history himself, becoming the first British rider to win a stage of the Giro d'Italia. Riding for Ford France, he escaped on the mountainous ninth stage from Naples to Campobasso, dropping his breakaway companions and battling alone to victory. It was a landmark achievement for British cycling, and proof that Denson was far more than a willing workhorse. He also won the 1965 Tour of Luxembourg. The death of his close friend Tom Simpson during the 1967 Tour de France affected Denson profoundly. He eventually retired from professional racing in 1969.Strong, loyal, immensely capable and full of wonderful stories, Vin belonged to an era when British cyclists had to fight for every opportunity abroad. With his passing, the final link to that remarkable pioneering generation has gone.Cycling Weekly's thoughts are with Denson's friends and family.

New Scott E-Ville full-suspension ebike hides rear shock and comes in urban and all-terrain specs
Scott has launched a new urban electric bike with a low step-through, full suspension frame. The Scott E-Ville is, according to the brand, designed as a single bike for commuting, trips across town or longer recreational rides, with the higher of the two specs, priced at 4,999 / 5,299, offering off-road capability.Theres rapid saddle height adjustment thanks to a dropper seatpost, which Scott says also makes it easier to put a foot down when you have to stop. The bar height can be changed thanks to a variable height stem.Scott E-Ville details Scott encloses the rear shock in the frame, so it's more shielded from debris. Paul Masukowitz / Scott Sports Scott has enclosed the E-Villes rear shock within the frames seat tube, where it claims its protected from dirt and debris, which it says will help to reduce longer-term maintenance needs. The E-Ville provides electric support via a Bosch Performance Line CX motor, which offers up to 100Nm torque, while theres a choice of 720Wh and 800Wh removable batteries with on-bike or off-bike charging and you can also fit a range extender if needed. A dropper post makes it easy to adjust saddle height. Paul Masukowitz / Scott Sports The E-Villes alloy frame has a 160kg weight limit, so theres plenty of capacity for load lugging on the rear rack. Scott says that you can add a trailer if you need to transport more. The bike comes with integrated Lezyne front and rear StVZO lights and with Curana mudguards for all-weather riding. Theres a Bosch display integrated into the handlebars and a built-in SP Connect mount, allowing you to attach your phone to the stemScott E-Ville specs and prices The Scott E-Ville is available in an urban and an off-road capable spec. Moots County Line Splits the Difference Between Road and Gravel With 42mm Tire Clearance
The new Moots County Line is Steamboat Springs answer for riders who spend most of their time on pavement but dont turn around when the road turns to dirt. I know, its splitting hairs, and weve heard this pitch before, but damn, this bike looks so good that it doesnt matter. Its designed around a 38mm tire, clears up to 42mm, uses road gearing, and keeps relatively short 425mm chainstays.(All Photos/Moots)Moots calls it an all-road bike, and the new County Line replaces the Vamoots 33 in the lineup. The standard version uses straight-gauge 3/2.5 titanium tubing, while a lighter double-butted County Line RSL is coming in early 2027.Its a Moots Thats Not Quite a Routt, Not Quite a VamootsMoots already covers both ends of this range. The Routt has followed modern gravel toward bigger rubber and rougher terrain, and now centers on a 50mm tire. The Vamoots remains a dedicated road bike. The County Line lands between them.Moots designed it around the mixed-surface riding near its Steamboat Springs home, but the idea is familiar: a fast bike for pavement and smooth dirt roads. The kinda where you spend plenty of time on pavement before detouring onto fast county-road gravel and eventually returning to asphalt. For Moots, the goal is to keep the familiar feel and efficiency of a road bike while adding enough tire volume and stability for loose surfaces and rough pavement. Plus, it needs to bring that Moots energy, that classic look with a supreme road feel. This isnt a gravel bike with slick tires. Its a road-oriented titanium bike thats much less picky about what counts as a road.Designed Around a 38mm TireThe County Line is designed around a 38c tire, with clearance for up to 42c. 38mm is becoming a popular size, and were seeing lots of performance all-road tires pushing up to this limit. Speaking of which, the bikes come with Vittoria Corsa Pro Control 38c tires, which says a lot about where Moots expects this bike to live. These arent chunky gravel tires trying to make a road bike survive off-road. Theyre fast, high-volume road tires with enough cushion and grip for hard-packed dirt and broken pavement. Moots says the larger tire platform adds grip and comfort without bringing along the weight and volume of a full modern gravel setup. That makes the County Line a pretty different proposition from the Routt. If your rides regularly involve rocky doubletrack and deep gravel, the Routt still makes more sense. If gravel means well-maintained dirt roads between stretches of pavement, the County Line is aimed directly at that use.Road Gearing StaysMoots didnt use the extra tire clearance as an excuse to go full gravel with the drivetrain. The County Line uses a 45mm road chainline and supports both 1x and 2x configurations. Maximum chainring size is 50T for 1x or 52/36T for 2x, though Moots complete 2x bikes are specd with SRAM 48/35T cranksets.Thats paired with a BSA 68mm threaded bottom bracket, flat-mount brakes, 160mm front and rear rotors, and a UDH derailleur hanger. It fully supports front-derailleur setups, and electronic routing comes standard. Moots does not offer internally routed mechanical shifting.New Carbon All-Road Fork and Integrated Front EndThe County Line gets a new Moots carbon all-road fork with a D-shaped steerer.Brake hoses run internally through the Moots titanium stem and down through the fork, cleaning up the front end without abandoning the titanium stem that fits the rest of the bike so well. The updated fork measures 382mm axle-to-crown and comes in 45mm and 52mm offsets, depending on frame size.Moots uses the different offsets to keep steering feel balanced across the eight-size range. The smaller 48, 50, and 52cm bikes use the 52mm offset, while sizes 54 through 62 move to 45mm.More Stable Than a Road Bike, Without Gravel-Bike LengthThe geometry moves slightly toward gravel, but Moots didnt stretch the County Line into a long, lazy bike. Every size uses 425mm chainstays, short by current gravel standards, which should keep the rear lively.Head angles range from 70 degrees on the smallest 48cm frame to 72.75 degrees on the 60 and 62cm bikes. Seat angles move the other way, starting at 74.75 degrees on the 48 and gradually settling to 73.5 degrees on the largest sizes. The idea is more stability and confidence than a traditional road race bike, without the stretched wheelbase and slower handling that often come with a modern gravel chassis.Straight-Gauge Titanium Standard, RSL Coming in 2027The standard County Line uses straight-gauge 3/2.5 titanium tubing. Moots describes that as the more forgiving version and expects it to be the right choice for most riders. Then theres the County Line RSL. Starting in early 2027, buyers can upgrade the same platform to Moots ride-tuned, double-butted RSL tubing. The RSL frame uses less material where it isnt needed, dropping weight while giving the bike a quicker, more direct feel under power.Rather than maintaining two separate all-road platforms, Moots is treating RSL as a premium frame upgrade.Same bike, different tubing. That should make the decision pretty straightforward: standard County Line for the classic Moots ride, RSL if weight and sharper response matter more. Moots hasnt published a frame weight for either version yet.Fenders, Racks, and a Third BottleThe County Line may lean toward the road side, but Moots didnt strip away all the practical stuff. Standard frames get fender mounts, optional upper rack mounts, and room for a third bottle underneath the downtube. The RSL gives some of that up to keep things lighter. Moots lists the standard bike with fender mounts, while the RSL does without them. Both frames use a standard 27.2mm seatpost, and it supports electronic dropper posts if someone really wants to push the County Line farther into dirt territory.Moots County Line Complete BuildsMoots is offering four complete builds at launch, split between SRAM Force and Red and between 1x and 2x.The Force 1x gets SRAM Force XPLR E1 13-speed with a 44T chainring and 10-46T cassette. It rolls on HED Vanquish 45 rims with DT Swiss 350 hubs and Vittoria Corsa Pro Control 38c tires.Builds include a Zipp SL 80 Race handlebar, Moots titanium stem, Moots Ti Cinch seatpost, Chris King Inset 7 headset, Chris King TF30 bottom bracket, and custom WTB Gravelier Ti saddle. The Red 1x follows the same basic formula but moves to SRAM Red XPLR and Chris King R45D hubs. The 2x builds switch to SRAMs road drivetrains with 48/35T cranksets and 10-36T cassettes. All four complete bikes use the Moots Carbon Allroad fork, Zipp SL 80 Race handlebar, Moots titanium stem and seatpost, HED Vanquish 45 rims, and 38c Vittoria Corsa Pro Control tires.Moots County Line PricingThe standard County Line is available to order starting now, so go get yourself that Halloween present you know you deserve.
