'We will seize them and they will be destroyed' police force issues warning to illegal e-bike riders
A London police force is clamping down on illegal e-bikes by seizing and destroying them. Since its formation in July 2023, City of London Polices cycle team has detained over 800 non-compliant e-bikes and scooters. The teams sergeant, Stu Ford, told Cycling Weekly he has witnessed a massive increase in people riding illegal e-bikes in recent months. Last week, for example, his team seized 18, including one that showed a top speed of 70kph on its speedometer. What were finding are these non-compliant bikes that are overpowered and have got a throttle to make them go rather than pedals, Ford said. Under UK law, an electrically assisted pedal cycle (EAPC) must have pedals, cannot be propelled to more than 15.5mph (25kph), and cannot exceed a power input of 250 watts. Ford and his team have been seizing bikes under Section 165A of the Road Traffic Act, which treats them as uninsured vehicles. Once confiscated, the bikes are taken to a pound and destroyed after 15 days. When we first started doing this, you could literally walk out of the police station and two or three would be right in front of you, Ford said, adding that the majority of the users are gig economy workers, such as food delivery riders.I understand that theyre in an economy where its very low income, they have to work long hours, and the quicker they can get to and from calls the better, but weve still got to stick to the laws of the road, Ford said.People are getting badly injured and in some instances killed by these bikes flying around, and theres no accountability for these people because theyre not on licenses. Theres no way to necessarily trace them. We need to do something, and what were doing at the moment is what we can with the powers we have. Cycle Team seized another 18 high powered non compliant bikes last week! Doing our bit to keep the city streets safe for all road users! PS10 pic.twitter.com/hcVAOsuxjHSeptember 2, 2026Around 200,000 cyclists pass through the City of London, the square mile district on the north side of the River Thames, between 8am and 9am every weekday. Ford and his team of 10 on-bike officers rely on certain markers to identify non-compliant e-bikes, such as the presence of a throttle and a dinner plate-sized hub containing a high-powered motor. We even had one bike that had a 2,000-watt motor on the front, and a 2,000-watt motor on the back, and it was just ridiculously fast, he said. According to Ford, the vast majority of these motors are bought online, and can carry fire risks from their lithium-ion batteries. Eighteen people died and nearly 700 were injured in the UK due to fires caused by e-bikes and e-scooters between 2019 and 2025, a freedom of information request made by the BBC showed last week. What Im trying to do now is education, engagement and enforcement, Ford said. Ive been talking to numerous other forces and assisting them, setting up the same [cycle teams], so they can understand the best practice of doing this. What this has meant for the City of London Police is a strict clamp down. The force made its stance clear in a warning to illegal e-bike riders posted on X: If you ride non-compliant e-bikes in the City, we will seize them and they will be destroyed. For more information about the rules around e-bikes, visit our 'electric bikes and UK law' page.

Its My Cloud And Ill Yell At It If I Want To
Hey! While I was away on vacation there was a custom bike show! Lets take a look at what I missed!Oh, never mind:Sorry, I dont want to see 32-inch bikes, I dont want to see drop bar mountain bikes, and I definitely dont want to see 32-inch drop bar mountain bikes, the Official Fad Machine of 2026. So Ill be sticking my fingers in my ears, closing my eyes, and going LALALALALALA until it all goes awaythough nothing really ever goes away, does it? It just lies dormant for awhile until someone brings it back with a new name. Remember before gravel was invented and these sorts of things used to be called monster cross bikes? Whatever happened to that?[This image of an old man yelling at a cloud is proudly 100% AI-generated and unsustainably sourced from the data center on top of where you used to ride your monster cross bike.]So in order to avoid any more trendy content I headed over to the terminally uncool Bicycling site, where I was unable to read anything because I dont have a subscription, though I didnt really need one since I already know everything. To wit:No.No. Unless you have a crank you want to use and its a different length from the one youre already using. Then yes.Because they wont let your fat ass use the drive-thru at McDonalds:McDonalds supports the health and environmental benefits of cycling, however it is our practice not to serve cyclists using the drive-thru lane or drive-thru service windows. The use of the word however is strange here, since incompatibility with fast food drive-thrus is in fact the primary health benefit of cycling.Hey, Ill do you one better (or I suppose two better), because here are the top three tire pressure mistakes to avoid:3. Using too much air2. Using too little air1. Using no air at allYoure welcome.Id also have accepted using liquid nitrogen instead of nitrogen gas.Too easy.Pedal faster, asshole.Oh well, having evolved fully into an old man who yells at clouds, its clear to me that whats old is new again and that all the cycling articles have already been written (in most cases many, many times over), which is why Im now getting all my bike-related advice from Vogue:Dont wear a helmet?Choose hats carefullyAlthough I generally ride quite slowly, or like a pensioner, as my partner would say, having to catch ahatas it flies away is inevitable. So if I really want to finish off an outfit with something on my head, I prefer options I can somehow keep under control. A baseball cap held in place by a ponytail or a securely tied scarf are my favourites. As a general rule, avoid wearing anything the wind could play havoc with.Dont wear synthetics?Avoid polyester and other synthetic fabrics that do not breatheEven if they meet all the criteria above in terms of cut and length, try to avoid polyester during the summer months. The effects of cycling will undo all your efforts to arrive somewhere looking polished and stylish. Breathable natural fabrics will help you stay fresh. Just in case, I never cycle anywhere without deodorant. If my destination is the office, there is often a spare T-shirt in my bag too.Wear whatever the hell you want on your feet? And finally, shoes! One thing that has always made choosing an outfit easier is that I have never really given too much thought to shoes, at least not in relation to cycling. Although it is obviously easiest to ride a bike in sneakers, this wonderful mode of transport can accommodate virtually anything you choose to wear on your feet. Boots, loafers, pumps, anything goes, which is a fairly good guarantee that you will ultimately be able to elevate an outfit you had to adapt for practical reasons. And yes, before I forget, simply get a basket for your bag! It is a lifesaver for carrying anything that might otherwise get in your way while cycling, and it also happens to look chic.Wow, I was skeptical going in, but this is unironically better than anything youll read in any mainstream cycling publication. Whod have thought one would have to turn to the world of high fashion in order to find refreshing pragmatism? Hey, Anna Wintour couldnt get that John Galliano thing off the ground, but maybe she can fte Grante Petersen at the Met instead. Anyway, soon you wont have any choice but to ride in sneakers and a t-shirt, because at this rate its only a matter of time before youre priced out of gravel:Wait, I thought MAMIL stood for Middle-Aged Man In Lycra. Isnt this a Young Woman In Lycra, or YWIL?Regardless, if youre looking for the perfect bike to bring with you on your superyacht, choose the Factor Elara:The above was all silly enough, but what follows is one of the dumbest things ever written about a bike:As you press hard into the cranks, youll immediately notice a solidity to the bottom bracket area. Its massively oversized, creating a rigid shell with the unflexing resoluteness of a carbon-fibre box girder.Wait, if your crank is properly attached to your bicycle youll immediately notice a solidity while pedaling it? Incredible.Anyway, once your bike is on board youll want to immediately have your crew set a course for some status gravel:All of the trips they describe sound lovely, but Id have go with this one:According to Mia Liefeld, the director of marketing at DuVine, what singles out its luxury experiences are the combination of premium bikes from Colnago and BMC, its carefully selected luxury accommodations and its unique focus on wine and dining. Its finest gravel trips include options like theColnago Tuscanytour, which takes in Italys famousstrade bianche(white roads) and starts at about $10,000 per person. Itsprivate villa portfoliospans Provence to California to Tuscany, and custom itineraries can also be built around this.Though I wonder if I could work out a deal with this operation to lead a tour:Founded by Cari Gray, this is the pinnacle of custom (not just cycling) travel, and may necessitate a redefinition of words like bespoke and luxury. There is no classic trip, Gray says: We do things all over theworld. Everything is created from scratch by a huge team of experts and logicians. Routes are prepped and mapped weeks in advance, and a pre-arrival team may be on the ground for up to two weeks before guests arrive to drive, walk and cycle every inch of the route and check in with every restaurant, hotel and villa. They arrive with a small army of support vehicles from SUVs to bike trucks. Pros and Olympians are flown in, chefs are shuttled around. Theres a cycling team (including mechanics and even paramedics if necessary), as well as a ground team co-ordinating everything off-bike. Every trip is a huge production behind the scenes, Gray says.It costs what it costs, theres no price list, this is simply zenith level travel planning/organisation for adventure-seeking billionaires. Why be the millionth person to ride the Strade Bianche and then quaff wine when you can moor your yacht in the Hudson, come to the Bronx, and then ride with me on the finest gravel Yonkers has to offer?Ill even lend you one of my Rivendae so you can leave that ugly-ass Facctor back on the boat.
