- BIKERUMOR.COMUnlock Power With Wahoos Speedplay PedalsImproving your cycling is never easy. You must put in the physical work. But no one ever said that you need to accept discomfort as part of the journey. And when it comes to the crucial linkage between body and machine, the pedal connection often goes overlooked as the root of any issues.Phil Burt breaks it down in simple terms: Pedaling is really just walking on a bike, he says, so the pedal system has to reflect how that rider naturally moves.Phil Burt (photo/Wahoo)Burts take is that riders should not have to adapt their bodies to match their pedals. It should work the other way around: The right system should (and can) properly re-align a rider to reduce strain, prevent injury, and boost performance. Burt should know; he literally wrote the book on Bike Fit, having helped earn over 30 Olympic medals and five Tour de France victories, serving as the Head Physiotherapist for British Cycling and a consultant for Team Sky.As a pioneering expert in solving ridings physio puzzles, the British bike fitter-innovator is a fierce advocate for upgrading to pedals that optimize your strengths and that reflect your preferred movement pathway. Heres what Burt has discovered by converting to Speedplays, and the impact he sees with what he considers the industrys only truly custom pedal system. The Speedplay Zeros fit into the standard tension cleat (photo/Wahoo)Learn more about Speedplay ZeroLearn more about Speedplay PowerBIKERUMOR: What are the main problems you see with elite athletes on the wrong pedals?PHIL BURT: The biggest issue is usually not a simple power number you can measure; it is pain, compensation, and inefficiency. If the pedal system or cleat setup does not suit the rider, you tend to see the overuse issues of knee pain, hip pain, IT band tightness, rocking on the saddle, and asymmetrical movement. If the foot cannot move as the rider naturally wants to, the stress gets pushed up the chain. What was your first impression switching over to Speedplay? For most riders, Speedplay feels unusual at first because it is so much less constrained. I always say it can feel like pedaling on an ice cube for the first ride or two. But once riders adapt, they usually realise how restricted they were before. The common feedback is that the bike starts moving with them rather than against them. And from my side, you often see excessive knee movement settle down very quickly once the rider is allowed to move more naturally. With prolonged use, what are the gains of adopting Speedplays into the full fleet? The long-term gain is not always about some dramatic, instant jump in peak power. More often, the biggest gain is allowing the rider to pedal more naturally, more comfortably, and more consistently. In elite sport, that often means fewer recurring issues, less physio input, and a better chance of holding aggressive positions without the body fighting back. It is not always about one dramatic jump in watts it is about removing the barriers to performance.Did the pedals have a particular impact with any team riders?Bradley Wiggins is a good example: as he accumulated miles and got older as an athlete, his hip started to kick out more. Changing to Speedplay helped that immediately because it gave him the freedom he needed. We also used Speedplay in the Rio team pursuit setup because the lower stack height and aerodynamic profile were genuine advantages, especially when you are trying to hold a very aggressive position. If the pedal lets the foot, knee, and hip sit more naturally, it becomes much easier to sustain that position and perform in it.Which type of rider is best suited for these pedals?Any rider who feels they are struggling to pedal naturally, fighting the pedal system. If you come off the bike with tight knees, move your feet around excessively, struggle with asymmetry, clip the cranks with your heels, or feel your knees are not tracking naturally, Speedplay is worth a serious look.Is their benefit a function of how much time you spend riding? It is less about hours ridden and more about whether your current setup is letting you pedal the way your body wants to. Speedplay is particularly useful for riders who need more float, more freedom of movement, or more options around stance width. That can apply to elite athletes in aggressive positions, but it can just as easily apply to everyday riders carrying old injuries or simply trying to get comfortable. The Speedplay Zeros (photo/Wahoo)What about mere mortal recreational riders? Why should they care about pedal fit and connection? In many ways, recreational riders should care even more. Elite riders often have the resilience, support, and time to work around a poor setup. Most ordinary riders do not. A pedal system that gives you more freedom to find a natural, pain-free movement pattern can make riding more comfortable, more sustainable, and more enjoyable.Any overlooked Speedplay features you really enjoy? The most overlooked feature is stance width. I think stance width will be the next big conversation in bike fit, because not every rider wants to stand or pedal at the same width. Speedplay gives you meaningful options there the variable spindle widths help you line the foot up properly under the knee and hip and that can be a game changer. Add in the low stack height, aerodynamic shape, and tunable float, and it becomes a very complete system. It is the only truly bespoke, custom pedal system, in my opinion. The real intangible, though, is simple: once it is set up properly, riders often stop noticing the pedals altogether. And that is usually a very good sign, because it means the bike is finally working with them rather than against them. This article is sponsored by Wahoo. - BIKERUMOR.COMFrom Just 1156g & 47-49.5mm Deep, Hunts 4AM Wheels Are Both Super Light AND Aero! With specs like carbon spokes, nearly 50mm mid-depth and super-wide aero carbon rims, class-leading wind tunnel performance numbers, and a total wheelset weight of just 1156g the new Hunt 4AM Limitless Ti UD Carbon Spoke wheels look pretty amazing. When Hunt launched their 5AM Limitless ultralight aero wheels with carbon spokes just back in April, we were already surprised at how well they balanced leading aerodynamic performance with an ultralight weight of just 1212g. (And we learned that they were referring to rim depths being Aero Maximised, not ante meridiem, or getting up super early in the morning to ride road bikes.)And now Hunt are back here again with another, more versatile set of slightly shallower aero carbon wheels, and theyre even lighter still! Plus, those 5AMs and these new 4AMs also add more affordable and still aero versions with bladed steel spokes, too.Hunt 4AM Limitless ultralight aero wheels with carbon spokes(Photos/Hunt)Hunt describes these new 4AM wheels as optimized for ultralight responsiveness and category-leading aero efficiency for high alpine racing environments. But its hard for us to just get past the simple fact that they are super aero and ultra-lightweight. Hunt says they are wind tunnel tested to provide a 1.4-Watt aero advantage over the Tour de France-winning ENVE SES 4.5 Pro, while offering a 139-gram weight savings, which is pretty wild. And while these new Hunt 4AM wheels are some of the most expensive the brand has ever sold, theyre still 15% cheaper than Pogis wheels.Key Limitless Aero Maximised TechYou still get front- & rear-specific 23mm internal hooked carbon rims like the 5AMs, designed to go fastest with modern 28-30mm wide tires. Wider outside and deeper up front, where the wind is cleaner, and where its more important to keep airflow attached at higher yaw angles for controllable handling & stability, even in variable winds. Then, lighter, narrower, and incrementally shallower out back, where theres less aero effect. And you still only need 15 of the aerofoil bladed Vonoa carbon spokes up front, and 18 in the rear, all with recessed nipples for smooth airflow.Hunt describes their Limitless aero wheel design as a more holistic approach, a 5-stage process that includes initial CFD design, wind tunnel testing with wheel-only, in-bike, and then with a real rider, followed by real-world outdoor testing with AeroSensor drag sensors. Thats how their wheels go from aero design to Aero Maximised.Whats new, then for 4AM?Now for the new 4AM, the front rim is 49.5mm deep by 34.2mm outside, again with Hunts low-density polymer Limitless Width Aero Tech filler inside that keeps rim weight low. Out back, the rim is 47mm deep x 30mm wide external. Sure, theyre almost 50mm deep, but not quite, hence the 4 in their name. But still about 8mm shorter than the 5AM.How fast are the new wheels?Hunt says the new 4AM Limitless Ti_UD Carbon Spoke wheels outperform the best mid-depth 40-50mm deep aero wheels on the market. And they do it at both lighter weight and a more accessible (if not quite affordable) pricepoint. Hunt also says the 4AMs are pretty much as fast as some top wheels in the next deeper category, too.In wind tunnel testing performed at Silverstone Sports Engineering Hub (both wheels on bike), mounted with 30mm tyres at 45 km/h, the 4AM Limitless Ti_UD wheelset (1156g) tests 1.4 watts faster than the ENVE 4.5 Pro while being 139 grams lighter. Compared to the significantly deeper and heavier DT Swiss 55 ARC Dicut BD (1479g) and Reserve 57/64 Turbulent Aero (1554g) wheels, the 4AM Limitless Ti_UD performs within 0.1 watt.Read more if you want to nerd out in their full in-depth whitepaper on the 4AM & 5AM wheelsets, here.Tech detailsaerodynamic carbon rims made from a mix of T700, T800 & T1000 UD carbon fiberplus low-density high-mod Mitsubishi Pyrofil HR 40 12M fiber filler in the front rim49.5mm deep x 34.2mm wide front wheel47mm deep x 30mm wide rear wheel23mm internal hooked tubeless carbon rims, front & rearhigh-gloss finish for easy cleaning15 front &18 rear Ti_UD Vonoa aero bladed carbon spokes with 6AL-4V titanium hardwareCNC-machined 7075-T6 Hunt Chase SLC centerlock disc brake hubs48T, 7.5 engagement H_Ratchet DBL freehubsealed stainless steel or hybrid (ceramic balls + stainless races) CeramicSpeed bearingsoptimized aerodynamics for 28mm-30mm tiresETRTO compatible with 28-50mm tires, tubeless or clincherfrom 1156g wheelset weight (claimed)UCI approvedHunt 4AM Limitless aero wheel Pricing & optionsHunts new ultralight aero carbon 4AM Limitless wheels are offered in three versions. The fastest and lightest are the Hunt 4AM Limitless Ti_UD Carbon Spoke wheels with hybrid CeramicSpeed bearings, selling for 2449 / $3159 / 2859, or fifty buckaroos less than the 5AMs. Next up are the 4AM Limitless Ti_UD Carbon Spoke wheels with stainless steel bearings at a slightly more approachable 1959 / $2559 / 2299, again a bit cheaper than the same 5AMs. New for the 4AM family are wheels with more conventional triple-butted, aero bladed Pillar SuperWing 20 spokes, too. - GRANFONDO-CYCLING.COMHot or Not? New Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Road Bike Helmet in ReviewWith the Evade 4, Specialized promise to deliver everything in one package: a lightweight aero helmet that offers improved ventilation and superior cooling, without compromising on aerodynamic drag. Sounds too good to be true? We took a closer look at the new successor to arguably the most famous aero helmet series in cycling history.Specialized S-Works Evade 4 | 281 g in Size M | 329 | Manufacturers WebsiteThe popular S-Works Evade from Californian brand Specialized enters its fourth generation, still chasing the exact same goal: to be the fastest helmet you will actually want to wear for every ride. Thanks to redesigned vents, the return of the distinctive forehead MouthPort, an improved BOA fit system, and an optimized head shape, Specialized promise increased comfort and better cooling, without compromising on aerodynamics. We hit the road to find out how it performs in the real world during daily use. What is the Specialized S-Works Evade 4 Capable Of?The fourth-generation Evade aims to make a bold statement, not just aerodynamically but visually too. If you are looking for subtle understatement, you are definitely in the wrong place. The S-Works version we tested proudly and unmistakably displays the prominent Specialized S on top. Its design is an aggressive take on modern racing aesthetics. Deeply sculpted vents along the sides give the helmet its characteristic, streamlined silhouette, leaving no doubt about its high-speed intentions, even when sitting on your kitchen table.Putting the helmet on for the first time is a real aha moment. While its predecessor, the Evade 3, caused uncomfortable pressure points around the temples for some riders, the Californian development team have overhauled the internal shape for the fourth generation. The shell has become slightly wider and more rounded, allowing the helmet to hug your head. Fine-tuning duties are handled by the completely redesigned BOA fit system at the back of the head, which now features height adjustment too. This is a feature that makes all the difference on the road: with just a few precise, tactile clicks of the rubberized dial, you can adjust the fit down to the millimeter even while riding with full-finger gloves. The straps lie flat and neat against your face, which means there is no annoying wind flap at high speeds.Confident branding and aggressive lines: the Evade 4 does not skimp on visual flair.Precision fit: the height-adjustable BOA system eliminates pressure points in next to no time. However, Specialized make their biggest promise when it comes to temperature management. The Evade 4 sets out to banish the old stereotype that aero helmets inevitably cause your head to overheat. To achieve this, an old friend is making a comeback: the distinctive MouthPort on the forehead is back. Combined with the significantly larger internal cooling channels, the system is claimed to deliver 2.4 % more cooling capacity than its predecessor.Out on the road, the system proves it actually works. Even at moderate speeds, theres a noticeable refreshing stream of air supplying your scalp with fresh breeze. During our test rides in summer conditions of up to 25 C, the climate inside the helmet remained completely neutral. We will have to wait for our long-term review to see how the Evade handles record-breaking, scorching summer days. When it comes to aerodynamics, we have to remain just as pragmatic as we do with the competition: without our own wind tunnel data, it is difficult to say anything definitive. That said, the Evade 3 was already one of the absolute fastest models on the market in independent testing, so its successor is unlikely to lag behind. The return of the MouthPort: the distinctive forehead opening noticeably channels fresh air over your scalp. The rubberized sunglasses garage holds your eyewear securely in place.A genuine highlight is the sunglasses garage. Specialized have integrated a ribbed, slightly rubberized texture into the outer vents. You can easily slide your sunglasses in ahead of a long tunnel or a caf break, and they will stay completely secure and rattle-free.When it comes to safety, Specialized rely fully on the expertise of the Swedish specialists at Mips. The Evade 4 utilizes the ultra-lightweight Mips Airnode Pro system, which is integrated directly into the minimalist padding. However, if you are expecting the large, yellow plastic liner found in common mountain bike helmets, you are in for a surprise: this construction is fundamentally different. The system relies on subtle hook-and-loop connections designed to release the crucial twisting movement in the event of an impact, minimizing dangerous rotational forces.Since we were fortunately spared a real-world crash, we have to rely on the safety promises and laboratory results from California. Whether this scaled-back road racing version offers genuine added value or is simply a clever marketing move is something everyone will have to decide for themselves. With a real-world weight of 281 g on our scales, the Evade 4 is anything but a heavyweight for a full-featured aero helmet with integrated rotational protection. Instead, it is a carefully considered package that blends performance, aerodynamics, and great ventilation. Conclusion: Would We Buy the Specialized S-Works Evade 4?The Specialized S-Works Evade 4 is absolutely HOT! The Californian brand have diligently addressed the weaknesses of the previous model. Thanks to its more rounded fit and height-adjustable BOA system, it sits perfectly without any pressure points. The return of the MouthPort ensures sufficient cooling, while the rubberized sunglasses garage is a highly useful feature for everyday riding. The only bitter pill to swallow alongside the loud branding is the hefty price tag of 329. However, if youre willing to invest the cash, you get an uncompromising daily aero performance helmet.TopsExcellent comfortGood ventilationPrecise and height-adjustable dial at the back of the headFlopsHigher price compared to its predecessorFind out more at specialized.comDer Beitrag Hot or Not?
