30km/h limits backed by traffic calming, enhanced visibility treatments, and shared road markings and speed-activated signage are among the design features planned for a Quiet Road pilot project planned in Co Monaghan. Monaghan County Council is planning the project between the villages of Scotstown and Ballinode in Monaghan, with public consultation running until June 3rd, 2026, at 5pm.The narrow country road, in this case, the LT20001 Clontoe Road, runs parallel to a wider road, which is more suited to through traffic. Robert Burns, chief executive of Monaghan County Council, said: Innovation in rural mobility doesnt always require major infrastructure projects. It can start simply with rethinking how existing roadspace is allocated and how road layouts can be designed to enhance safety for all users.Burns points to other countries where such low-traffic routes are marked out and are traffic-calmed to enable safer walking and cycling.
