Scope Scales Down w/ New Lightweight, Aero R4.G Gravel Wheels
Scopes most eye-catching wheels are probably their Artech Aeroscale models, with scale-shaped molding providing maximum aerodynamics for road riding. Now, theyre smoothing it over for gravel, giving you most of the aero benefits but in a lighter, more affordable option. The new Scope R4.G Gravel wheelset has the same engineering DNA and proven rim profiles of the Artech 4.G, just without the Aeroscales. And it gets steel spokes, not carbon, yet still comes in at 1439 grams. The 28 mm internal width hookless rim is aerodynamically optimized for 45 mm tubeless tires. The hookless design is a departure from their road and triathlon wheels, which maintain a hook for better bead security at higher air pressures. But with the lower tire pressure typically used on gravel bikes and their wider tires, they went with hookless which they claim makes for easier setup. They say the wider rim provides better lateral stiffness, which is enhanced by the Sapim CX-Ray T-head aero spokes strength. Internal nipples are hidden inside the rim, adding a subtle aerodynamic gain. The rims also use Scopes Local Reinforcement carbon technology. Additional carbon layers around the spoke holes on the inside of the rim resist pull-through where extra strength is needed, but saves weight elsewhere in the rim.The new R-series hubsUpdated R-series hubs borrow more of their Artech-series hubs design to save weight. But, theyre not only lighter, theyre also stiffer and more durable. The lightweight, CNC-machined R-Series hubs use Scopes Diamond Ratchet engagement system for instant power transfer and long-term reliability. A mechanical labyrinth seal effectively blocks dirt from entering the hub, reducing maintenance needs. And, the hubs are designed specifically for bladed T-head spokes, preventing spoke twist.Theyre compatible with all major freehub body standards Shimano HG / Micro Spline, SRAM (X)DR, and Campagnolo / N3W.The new Scope R4.G are available through dealers or direct. MSRP is 1.698 ($1,798).ScopeCycling.comThe post Scope Scales Down w/ New Lightweight, Aero R4.G Gravel Wheels appeared first on Bikerumor.

Mass Damper Curious? Da Bomb Adds Dampers for MTB & Gravel to Your Steerer
Mass dampers arent necessarily new. Well, in the world of mountain biking, yes, more so. But mass dampers have been used in buildings, bridges, and even cars and motorcycles for quite a while. So, what is a mass damper doing? Im certainly not an engineer, but the simplest explanation is that they help with vibration damping. My apologies for using a part of the name in the definition. Essentially, a weight is suspended between two springs, and this sprung mass (literally) absorbs vibrations. As you can imagine, this means less vibration transferred to the rider.Whats the rub? Well, we already have quite a few things helping to absorb vibrations. First, and likely the most obvious, is suspension, but there are also other items we dont think of, such as the deformation of our tires. Even components like the wheels, handlebars, and frame help damp vibrations. So, lots of dampers on our mountain bikes. And, for good reason, as these help provide traction and comfort over rough terrain. So why not add more? Check out Da Bombs video of their damper in action on their Facebook page.Da Bomb has two mass dampers to choose from, all of which fit modern 1 steerer tubes. They have the option of a slightly smaller, lighter damper for gravel, XC, and trail riding, as well as a damper for enduro and DH.Enduro/DH damper (left) & Gravel/XC/Trail damper (right). Photo cred: Da BombThe enduro/DH damper is 20mm taller and 25g heavier.Unlike other mass dampers, such as Rimpacts, which lives inside the steerer tube, Da Bombs mount externally. Da Bomb has a couple of bracket options, including one for a dual-crown fork and a gravel seatpost. Both dampers ship with Da Bombs V1 bracket for single-crown forks. While they dont list the price on their website, Ive seen the price of $120 bouncing around for Da Bombs dampers. They also have quite a few other components, and even frames, for sale. So, do we need mass dampers? Well, they certainly add weight, albeit less than a pound. The enduro/DH damper weighs 303g, while the gravel/XC/trail damper is 278g. Not too much of an issue, but will they make you go faster?Honestly, we dont know. Maybe well have to get one in for some timed lapskeep an eye out for a future post.Damper DetailsGravel/XC/Trail DamperTube Material: AluminumSteerer Diameter: 1-1/8Height: 120mmInner Diameter: 34mmWeight: 278gIncluded: Bracket V1 (for Single-crown forks)Color Options: BlackEnduro/DH DamperTube Material: AluminumSteerer Diameter: 1-1/8Height: 140mmInner Diameter: 34mmWeight: 303gIncluded: Bracket V1 (for Single-crown forks)Color Options: Blackdabombmtb.comThe post Mass Damper Curious?
