Mondraker Leaves Something to the Imagination with Early Tease of Avinox-Powered ZENDIT eMTB
Mondraker is releasing the details of its new ZENDIT eMTB in two phases. In the first, were learning almost everything about its new Avinox-powered e-bike, including frame design, suspension, features, models, and specs. In the second, on April 9th, well get the full details, including the Avinox drive unit model, power numbers, and other specs. Is this an updated version of Avinoxs highly regarded motor system? Sounds like well know more soon. Its a somewhat unusual approach for a brand in the bike industry, but it seems Mondraker has taken a page out of the exotic dancer playbook. By showing us almost everything about the ZENDIT, theyre clearly hoping to build some serious anticipation and interest in this soon-to-be-released bike. Get your dollar bills ready, because soon enough, Mondraker is going to take it all off.But as we anxiously await the full details, heres what we know about the new Mondraker ZENDIT so far.The new ZENDIT is a long travel eMTB with aggressive angles for getting after it.Mondraker ZENDIT DetailsMondraker says it is designed for aggressive riding on the nastiest climbs and descents, ZENDIT is the result of over 11 years of eMTB development, combined with the no-holds-barred approach to suspension performance from the Mondraker Factory Racing development team. To that end, the ZENDITs carbon frame gets 165mm of rear wheel travel using the brands updated ZERO suspension platform. Thats being paired with 170mm forks and a mixed wheel size configuration.Of course, the Stealth Air Carbon frame itself has been designed around the Avinox drive system and battery for seamless integration. Mondraker states the frame is highly advanced in both design and manufacture, and that theyre using 6-axis CNC machines for frame drilling and finishing. Notable frame features include a one-piece carbon rocker and the same twin-sealed bearing system on the new Summum. The frame also has fully guided internal cable routing, rubber and plastic frame protectors, and a drive system display unit integrated into the top tube.Mondrakers ZERO suspension design controls the 165mm of rear travel and has been updated to suit the unknown power levels of the Avinox drive system.ZERO SuspensionMondraker states that its ZERO suspension platforms kinematics have been completely revised to reflect the power of its drive system. Its a fairly complicated-looking suspension layout with the shock passing through a hole in the seat tube. But, Mondraker says it is both supportive and active, while anti-squat figures maintain a balanced, efficient ride with every pedal stroke. Additionally, the brand has worked with Fox on ZENDIT-specific Float X and Float X2 tunes to maximize its performance and ride feel.Unfortunately, we dont have charts to share, but for those who enjoy hearing about kinematics, here are a few details. The leverage ratio is stated to have 27% progression, which is claimed to work well with todays larger-volume air shocks. Anti-squat at sag is claimed to be 105%, and anti-rise is listed at 99% at sag.We dont have the full geometry chart just yet, but heres a sketch Mondraker provided showing some of the important numbers. FORWARD GEOMETRYA while back, Mondraker really shook things up with its FORWARD GEOMETRY concept and was arguably a driving force in what we now consider to be standard geometry figures. Since most other brands have incorporated longer front center and reach measurements along with slacker head tube and steeper seat tube angles, Mondrakers FORWARD GEOMETRY doesnt really stand out like it once did. That said, the ZENDITs geometry chart shows a bike purpose-built for the aggressive riding Mondraker says its best suited for.Mondraker also included geometry-adjusting flip chips, so riders can take the bike from slack in the high setting to even slacker in the low setting. Flipping the chips results in a 5mm change to bottom bracket height and a 0.35-degree head and seat angle adjustment, going from 63.5 to 63.15 at the front and 77 to 76.65 in the back.Reach numbers are spot on by todays standards, with 20mm of growth between sizes, starting at 440 on a small and topping out at 520 on the XL (480mm on a large frame). On that note, there are five frame sizes: S, M, M/L, L, and XL.Long, low, and slack. The ZENDIT looks ready to send it.For proportionality, Mondraker increases the chainstay length from 450mm on the S, M, and M/L sizes to 455mm on the L and XL frames. The ZENDIT comes stock with mixed wheel sizes, but Mondraker says that it can be switched to a full 29 setup using a lower flip-chip, which increases chainstay length by 7mm. This flip chip reportedly maintains suspension kinematics, bottom bracket height, and key geometry angles. The ZENDIT RR S is the mid-range complete build in the lineup.ZENDIT Models, Specs, and PricingAfter the unveiling of the ZENDITs motor details and its official launch on April 9th, it will be offered in three complete builds. All of these are built around the same frame and Avinox motor, battery, and other components.ZENDIT XR: $15,499 USD / 12,499 / 10,999Vortex GreyAdmiral BlueFork: Fox Podium Factory, 170mmShock: Fox Float X2 FactoryBrakes: SRAM Maven UltimateDrivetrain: SRAM XO AXS TransmissionHandlebar: Onoff CarbonWheels: DT Swiss CarbonTires: Front: Maxxis Assegai 29 x 2.5 DD, Rear: Maxxis DHR II 27.5 x 2.5 DDSeatpost: RockShox Reverb AXSFrame Colors: Admiral Blue / Oxford Blue / Racing Silver, Vortex Grey / Black / Charcoal GreyZENDIT RR S: $12,999 USD / 10,499 / 9,299Hunter GreenVortex GreyFork: Fox Podium Factory, 170mmShock: Fox Float X FactoryBrakes: SRAM Maven SilverDrivetrain: SRAM XO AXS TransmissionHandlebar: Onoff CarbonWheels: DT Swiss AlloyTires: Front: Maxxis Assegai 29 x 2.5 EXO+, Rear: Maxxis DHR II 27.5 x 2.5 DDSeatpost: Fox Transfer FactoryFrame Colors: Hunter Green / Moss Green / Foxy Gold, Vortex Grey / Black / Charcoal GreyZENDIT RR: $10,699 USD / 8,499 / 7,399SaturnVortex GreyFork: Fox 38 Factory, 170mmShock: Fox Float X FactoryBrakes: SRAM Maven BaseDrivetrain: SRAM S1000 AXS TransmissionHandlebar: Onoff AlloyWheels: DT Swiss AlloyTires: Front: Maxxis Assegai 29 x 2.5 EXO+, Rear: Maxxis DHR II 27.5 x 2.5 DDSeatpost: Onoff Pija Adjustable lengthFrame Colors: Saturn / Relic Metallic / Racing Silver, Vortex Grey / Black / Charcoal GreyMondraker ZENDIT: Stay TunedPart two of Mondrakers two-phase ZENDIT launch is coming on April 9th. Taipei Unofficially Confirms It: 32 Tires Are Here for XC, Trail, Gravel & Entry-Level Bikes
Let me start by saying that tires from these six manufacturers are truly just the tip of the iceberg. 32 was a concept a year ago. Now, it is a literally unavoidable trend!Bikerumor has spent the past three days scouring the Taipei Cycle show for evidence of 32 from frame, suspension, wheel, and tire suppliers (plus a few extra-drop stem makers, too.) And our consensus is that 32 wheels are coming very soon, and theres no avoiding it from an XC perspective. And, now we know for sure that 32 Trail will be a thing.Wats a little surprising though is the uptake from gravel. Even though the bulk of these tires are adapted 2.4 mountain bike tires, they are still being positioned as gravel, too.But ultimately, were gonna just have to see how it workMaxxis Aspen was the real impetus of 32The 32 tire started with a simple concept. Can it make top level XC racers faster in a real race situation? Our short tests have been pretty inconclusive. From what weve heard, it feels a tiny bit slower, yet it is incrementally quicker. Thats great for an elite racer, but less so for my relatively slow rides. While Maxxis debuted the 32size last year, it was nice to see their more affordable CST partner debut a lower-priced tire that could make sense. The CST Patrol is a logical, versatile tire for regular XC to trail riding.Weve seen it unlabeled for almost half a year, but the 32 x 2.4 Maxxis Dissector is a game changer. It is traditionally an all-rounder trail tire. But now it is closer to being enduro & eMTB ready.More 32 XC tires from other tire makers, tooBack on the XC front, Schwalbes 32 Rick Race was the first non-Maxxis modern 32 tire that I saw in person. Its still not officially launched. And off the record when I spoke with Schwalbe about some upcoming tire launches, this one wasnt even on their radar. I wouldnt be surprised to see it being raced on the XC World Cup this season under sponsored racers. And well probably be able to get a set to test this spring/summer. But since 32 commercially-available wheels, forks & frames are stil so limited, I would expect to see these other 32 tires make real-world availability until at least the end of next summer.Kendas new 32 Dagger XC tire is exactly the same story. This tire is winning accolades in the 29er version for the eco-friendly fabrics inside and its recycled content. But it hopes to shine on the XC circuit with the improved roll-over, extra grip, and lower rolling resistance of larger wheel size. Time will tell on that front/Budget 32 XC & gravel tires are what will make this really find tractionOne of the beauties of cruising the booths at Taipei Cycle is that manufacturers are psyched to hype affordable bikes and components. The big US & EU brands are always trying to convince our Bikerumor crew that their latest latest $10,000 bikes and fancy components are the best things since sliced bread. But what about products that all cyclists can actually afford? If you can make new tech or a new trend affordable, thats genuinely more interesting to me. (Who cant make a $15k bike great!)So, it feels like Taiwans manufacturing sector is proving that 32 wheels can make sense for the masses. Those dozen or so affordable 32 forks are the perfect example. Here we see a simple slick Innova Mimosa tire get a new 32 x 2.4 size. This is a tire that might make its way onto an affordable gravel bike or city bike. But the fact that it exists means that a mountain biker who buys a 32 XC or trail bike can always fall back and ride their new bike to work if the wantAffordable tires still need to be versatile if 32 wheels are going to take root.Ontrack is a perfect example of a tire maker youve never heard of. As a pretty baseline, mostly OEM-only tire maker, you could have their tires on a budget bike and not even know it. The folded-up 29er has a rudimentary label, but the several actual 32 versions of this tire that I spotted, all were entirely without any brand labeling.Their Transition is a simple fast-rolling XC tread. And like almost all 32 tires we saw this week it is officially a 2.4 (61mm) tire. Presumably that is based off a standard 30mm internal hookless rim. Almost every 32 Ontrack Transition tire i spotted looked quite a bit narrower on alloy rims that probably werent as wide inside.Maybe thatll prove to be a good thing?Affordability & practicality with bigger wheelsTo make 32 as a legit system work, you also need tube availability. Ive stretched a 27.5 butyl tube into a flat 29 tire on more than one occasion. The jump to 32 is a bit bigger, but weve already head plenty of anecdotal evidence from brands doing testing that a stretchy 29er tube will work in a pinch. But to get serious, its nice to see that Onward has also added a 32 TPU tube to their lineup. Looking at the next bike, Im sure someone has made a cheap butyl tube, too. I just havent help it in my hand yet.So for now, well leave you with this scary sceneThe first consumer 32 bike you might see hit the market could be this department store Safeway bike with QR axles, hydro disc brakes, an alloy frame, and steel fork. Theres nothing about it that I would especially describe as the safe way. But it does have that budget 32 Ontrack Transition tire on it, so itll probably roll over small bumps smoothly as an MTB commuter. And it might sell for as cheap as $500-600 in US dollars. At least the fork is on the right way.Fingers crossed. The post Taipei Unofficially Confirms It: 32 Tires Are Here for XC, Trail, Gravel & Entry-Level Bikes appeared first on Bikerumor.
