6 talking points from Opening Weekend
Cyclist6 talking points from Opening WeekendThe cycling season is officially in full swing, with Opening Weekend kicking off the mainstream European season in typically grimy conditions. With the action now in the rearview mirror and the peloton already switching its focus to the next challenge, here are six of the biggest talking points to take away from the action at Omloop Nieuwsblad and Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne.Business as usual as favourites winTim de Waele/Getty ImagesWhile the underdogs won the mens and womens Omloop Nieuwsblad last year via the breakaway and a bunch sprint respectively, the favourites came to the fore this year to ensure that wouldnt happen again this time around.Mathieu van der Poel made his debut at the race, starting his road season earlier than usual after another dominant cyclocross campaign, and attacked the lead group on the Muur van Geraardsbergen. It was less of a blistering attack and more a case of simply riding away with ease to go solo in the last 16km. Red Bull-Bora-Hangrohes Tim van Dijke and UAEs Florian Vermeersch battled it out behind to complete the podium. No rider has won both Omloop Nieuwsblad and the Tour of Flanders in the same season, and to break the curse Van der Poel will have to get the better of defending champion Tadej Pogaar. Easier said than done.In the womens race, FDJ United-Suez leader Demi Vollering broke clear with Canyon-SRAM-Zondacrypto star Kasia Niewiadoma-Phinney after a blistering setup from Vollerings new teammate Franziska Kochon the Muur. In a battle of Tour de France Femmes victors, the duo came to the finish line together and Vollering prevailed, with her former SD Worx-Protime teammate Lorena Wiebes winning the sprint for the final podium spot 20 seconds later.British riders shineLuc Claessen/Getty ImagesMovistars Cat Ferguson is having a great season so far, kicking things off with victory at Trofeo Llucmajor and a stage win at Setmana Ciclista Valenciana. She was one to watch despite it being just her second Classics season and wasted no time in making her presence felt, finishing fourth just behind Wiebes at Omloop Nieuwsblad, while British National Champion Millie Couzens of Fenix-Premier Tech finished a few places behind in eighth her best result in a Classic yet.Visma-Lease a Bikes Matthew Brennan then became the first Brit since Mark Cavendish to win at Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne in a sprint that blew away the rest of the field. Brennan was put in a perfect position by Christophe Laporte and finished the job with ease. Its finally some good news for the team after Wout van Aert was forced to delay his road season through illness. Laporte started celebrating the win before Brennan had even crossed the line, earning himself a yellow card after the race.It wasnt all good news for British riders, however. At Omloop Nieuwsblad 21-year-old neo-pro Noah Hobbs of EF Education-EasyPost suffered a puncture and a mechanical, and then managed to get lost. This guy picked me up and took me here [to the finish in Ninove], he said. Hes a good guy. Without him, I think Id still be somewhere in Belgium.Jasper Philipsen tries to channel Van der Poel? View this post on Instagram A post shared by TNT Sports Cycling (@tntsportscycling)Jasper Philipsen was particularly active during Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne. The Belgian was seen on the front of the peloton on the Mont Saint-Laurent, leading the charge up the cobbled climb and driving a fierce pace to cause splits behind. The main bunch all came back together though, and Philipsen kicked into life again on the next climb, muscling his way towards the front of the group once more and pushing on. He later punctured, had to ride his teammates bike for a while before swapping back in the final few kilometres to contest the sprint, only for the defending champion to finish a disappointing 18th.Death, taxes and trains disrupting a Classic View this post on Instagram A post shared by UCI Womens WorldTour (@uci_wwt)Some bad luck befell Alison Avoine as she attempted to make her way into the days four-rider breakaway at Omloop Nieuwsblad. The Ma Petite Enterprise rider threw up her arms in light-hearted exasperation at the closed level crossing, ultimately scuppering her more as she was forced to stop. Its by no means the first time a train has disrupted a race. Back in 2020, a train caused the womens race to briefly stop, and in 2015 many riders jumped the tracks at Paris-Roubaix after the barriers came down. Lets hope the only trains disturbing the rest of the Classics are leadout trains.Crashes put paid to many Classics campaignsUAE Team Emirates XRGA number of riders came down in bad crashes over the weekend, with slippery conditions making affairs a bit sketchier than normal. Tudors Stefan Kng broke his femur at Omloop, while teammate Rick Pluimers broke two teeth after hitting the ground on the Molenberg in the crash that ultimately created the decisive group. Meanwhile Ineoss Ben Swift fractured his pelvis and will be out for months, and Bahrains Vlad Van Mechelen broke his collarbone. Its bad news for Tadej Pogaar too with Milan-San Remo fast approaching. One teammate, Tim Wellens, was sidelined with a broken collarbone suffered at Kuurne, while another, Jhonatan Narvez,is already sidelined following multiple vertebrae fractures at the Tour Down Under. Those two just happen to be the pairing that led Pogaar out on the Cipressa for his big attack in 2025. The responsibility now looks to have shifted to Isaac del Toro and Florian Vermeersch.Tudor Pro Cycling come to the foreChris AuldDespite having so many injuries in their ranks that they couldnt field a full team for Kuurne-Brussel-Kuurne, Tudor Pro Cycling managed to pick up a second and third place through Luca Mozzato and Matteo Trentin. Following their stage win at the AlUla Tour with Yannis Voisard, second place at Trofeo Andratx Pollena with Mathys Rondel and third place at Classic Var with Rick Pluimers, it marks their fourth and fifth podium of the season so far.Theyve definitely taken a hit in losing Kngfor the Classics, but their depth is showing in these early races and they have riders capable of making a difference in the hilly Classics too.For more on the Classics, visit our hub page. The post 6 talking points from Opening Weekend appeared first on Cyclist.
