Redshift Mousetrap Review: Turn Any SPD Pedal into a Flat Pedal with a Simple Snap
Redshift Sports is no stranger to producing clever bicycle products that find solutions to problems you didnt know you even had. And today, they launch the new Mousetrap Pedal Adapters, which are no exception. The new Moustraps conveniently address a common, everyday cycling challenge. Without using any tools, the Moustraps easily convert SPD clipless pedals into flat pedals.(Photos / Redshift Sports)Lets say you have guests over, or one of your kids wants to ride your bike, but it has little SPD clipless pedals, and there are no SPD shoes that fit. Just grab the Mousetraps, and in seconds, that bike becomes rideable with regular shoes. Problem solved. How do They Work? The Mousetrap adapters attach to existing SPD pedals, creating an 80 x 105mm platform that lets cyclists wear regular shoes for quick trips to the store, casual rides, or unexpected detours. That platform size is one of the key elements to the Mousetrap design. This is not the first clipless pedal adapter to make it easier to pedal in flat shoes. But this may be the first to offer such a large platform that can be easily installed and removed without tools. The solution eliminates the need to carry cycling shoes or struggle with sneakers on bare clipless pedals.Like a regular cleat, slide the front pedal knub into the front of the SPD pedal. Then insert the back of the mousetrap into the rear section and close the grey lever to lock it in. Boom, in seconds, youre ready to roll.Like a regular cleat, slide this into the front of the pedal. Then lace the back into the pedalAnd close it to clamp it inThere you have it, ready to roll.Installing the Mousetraps is easy-peasy and requires no tools. The Mousetraps simply snap onto your fave SPD pedals by hand. The result provides secure retention that wont accidentally release during use.Theyre only 10mm thick, and they sit within the clipless mechanisms existing profile. That means riders dont need to adjust seat height when using them, which is great. Magnets keep them together. Compact & Easy to StoreThe Redshift Mousetraps use built-in magnets that keep them together during storage and transport. The two adapters simply snap together, making them a compact unit that fits easily in a jersey pocket, frame bag, or backpack. The Mousetrap Pedal Adapters work with dual-sided SPD pedals (and likely some single sided SPD pedals as well). And depending on what kind of shoes you have on, this gives riders flexibility to use one or both sides, depending on their needs. What did I think of the Mousetraps?I thought the Mousetrap pedal adapters were really clever and easy to use. When I want to quickly run into town and dont feel like taking my Clem Smith Jr. down, I grab the closest bike I can get my hands on.You can use either side, with the Redshift Mousetraps; its your choice.More often than not, thats my Salsa Blackthorn mountain bike. With the Mousetraps, I can grab em, install em, and in literal seconds, I am on my way to the store while wearing regular shoes. They have a claimed weight of 176g per pair, but mine came out a little under that, at 173g. Thats pretty light and makes them almost undetectable when stored in a pocket or pack. Redshift Mousetrap Retail & DetailRetail: $59.99Material: Glass-Filled Nylon (Composite)Weight: 176g per pairDimensions: Generously sized 80mm x 105mm platform x 10mm thick (when installed, sits level with top of clipless mechanism)Colors:Black/Gray available everywhere via redshiftsports.com & retailers worldwideLimited edition Purple/Black, Teal/Pink, and Blue/Orange available via redshiftsports.com in the US & select retailers worldwideCompatibility: SPD and most SPD-compatible clipless pedalsIn ConclusionI think the Redshift Mousetrap adapters offer a very practical solution for cyclists who want to use their primary bike for all kinds of various activities where they dont want/need to be clipped in. With these handy lil problem solvers, you dont have to deal with the very real hassle of pedal swaps or carrying multiple pairs of shoes. The Mousetraps are a relatively low-cost, quality product. Speaking of price, I would have actually liked to see the price come in a little closer to the $39.99 relm. But, theyre still cheaper than a quality platform pedal and way less hassle than swapping pedals. And, you have to put some value in the ease of use and simplicity of the installation. They expand the versatility of clipless pedal-equipped bikes for everyday use while maintaining the option to clip in when desired. They seem very well thought out, which isnt surprising coming from Redshift, but they seem very durable as well.Ive been using mine for a little over a month, and I find that they will, more than likely, last for several years. If the Mousetrap SPD Pedal Adapters seem like something thatd be useful for you, I would not hesitate to recommend you get a pair. And if youre into these, youd be into a lot of stuff that Redshift has to offer, so hit the link below to peruse their site.RedshiftSports.comThe post Redshift Mousetrap Review: Turn Any SPD Pedal into a Flat Pedal with a Simple Snap appeared first on Bikerumor.

Apparently, Gates Belt-Drive May Owe Spot Bikes Millions in Unpaid Royalties
It looks like a lawsuit between Gates Corp. and Spot Bikes will be going to trial after a judges recent rulings. As reported in The Colorado Sun and The Denver Post, the two Colorado-based bike brands have been at it in the courts for nearly two years. And, thus far, things arent going Gates way.If proceedings continue to head in that direction, it might cost Gates tens of millions.A Bit of Background(Photo/Cannondale)Okay, so this story dates back to 2008not the lawsuit, but the story. Gates Corp. debuted its carbon belt-drive system that year, promising to revolutionize the bike industry. However, there was a problem. No, it wasnt the fact that for a hundred years bikes had been dominated by chain-driven drivetrains. The issue was how frames are designed.Bike frames have a solid rear triangle, and a belt needs to pass through it. Obviously, with a chain, there is no issue, since a link can simply pop apart and be reassembled. This isnt the case with Gates new carbon belts. So, Spot came up with a solution, creating the appropriately named Drop-Out. Essentially, the dropout area of the rear triangle separates, allowing the belt to slide over the chainuh, beltstay(?).Spots current Kobe Slider 3 dropout (Photo/Spot Bikes)Spot struck up a deal with Gates, allowing the belt-drive giant to license the technology to other frame manufacturers. In return, Gates promised to pay Spot a royalty on profits related to companies licensing the Drop-Out design from Gates.Well, apparently, Gates never paid up. And, the numbers are pretty big. By 2011, 54 brands used a belt drive on almost 100 different models. By the time Spot filed a lawsuit in 2024, 1,000 bike models from 135 brands were equipped with the belt-drive system. And, according to their original agreement, Spot says they are owed 8% on all of these. Adding the sales up over nearly 20 years, it is a significant chunk of change.Recent Court Rulings(Photo/Spot Bikes)A Colorado judges decision on February 17th denied Gates Corp.s attempt to countersue Spot. This ruling follows a September ruling, also against Gates, that claimed Spots design and patent on the Drop-Out was invalid. Now, a jury of their peers will hear the dispute between the two bike brands. Both previous rulings, in favor of Spot, mean that lawyers on both sides will now look to schedule a trial.Currently, Gates is attempting to appeal to a higher court, seeking to have the case bumped from the state to the federal level. However, the judge doesnt want to delay the proceedings longer.Perhaps these two will be in a courtroom sooner than later. The post Apparently, Gates Belt-Drive May Owe Spot Bikes Millions in Unpaid Royalties appeared first on Bikerumor.

Xtracycles Swoop ASM is Making This Dad Think Maybe Its Time to get a Cargo Bike
Xtracycle is a go-to brand for cargo bikes and e-cargo bikes. Their latest offering falls in the latter category and can carry up to three little ones. Kids, that is, of which I have two. And, after taking a look at what Xtracycle is doing with this new Swoop ASM, it has me thinking maybe I need one.Automatic Smile MachineXtracycle is so confident in their new e-cargo bike that they dubbed it the Automatic Smile Machine. (That is the ASM in Swoop ASM) Helping to provide those smiles are some Shimano components that make up the heart of the Swoop ASM.Xtracycle equipped the Swoop ASM with a Shimano STEPS EP6 Cargo drive unit. It outputs 250W (~500W max) and 85Nm of torque, reaching 28MPH.That makes this a class 3 e-bike.The EP6 drive unit is paired with a 630Wh battery, which can reach up to 60 miles between charges. The Swoop ASM also features Shimano Di2 shifting. This means automatic shifting for easy cruising, if you so desire.Rather than using cadence sensors, Xtracycle opted for torque sensors for the drive unit. Torque sensors better complement the ride experience, as they allow the motor to sense the riders input and assist from there. This provides a more natural assistance, rather than the on/off feel that can come with a motor with cadence sensors. The Swoop ASM is built with Xtracycles classic 24/20-inch mullet wheels. A few other standouts are a Suntour fork with 80mm of travel, Tektro 4-piston brakes with 203mm rotors, and Maxxis Metroloads tires.Check out the entire build spec on their website.Xtracycle Gives You All the AccessoriesTypically, on bikes like this, you see cool pictures of kids riding on a rear rack or a cargo basket for groceries. Then, upon ordering, you find out that all those things that made the bike seem so practical cost a significant amount extra.Well, apparently Xtracycle also thinks that is silly. So, a purchase of the Swoop ASM comes with:MIK Deck rackA Hooptie kid carrierPorterRack (front)Wheel skirtsFootrestsIntegrated lightsHeavy-duty kickstandThe new MIK Deck is the base on which you can build and accessorize the Swoop ASM to your needs. This is what youd attach the Hooptie to, which is sort of the all-purpose kid carrier. Xtracycle claims it will carry at least two kids. There may be room for a third kid, I suppose, if they are all small enough. While I couldnt find any weight limits for the racks, they say it can carry adults, so I imagine a few kids back there shouldnt be a problem. Xtracylce also says it can carry teens, but I dont think any teenagers would think its very cool to be cruising around with their parents.Luckily, my kids are only 6 and 8, and still think Im relatively cool.Xtracycle also built the Swoop ASM to fit a wide range of riders. Components such as a telescoping seatpost and a fully adjustable stem allow one frame to fit riders 410-65.The Swoop ASM retails for $4,499. There is a pre-sale that will knock $500 off the price, with the bike shipping (free) on March 31.xtracycle.comThe post Xtracycles Swoop ASM is Making This Dad Think Maybe Its Time to get a Cargo Bike appeared first on Bikerumor.
