Test debut of the 2024 SRAM RED groupset Effortless wins?
Lighter? Sure. Faster? Of course. SRAMs new flagship groupset ticks all the usual boxes, though it prioritises something completely different: ease of use. We found out what this means for the performance of SRAMs latest top-end road groupset.Effortlessness: Thats the common thread running through the new SRAM RED AXS groupset. That doesnt mean that cycling with the new RED AXS no longer requires any effort its just a groupset, not a motor. Rather, SRAM have aimed to make the new RED AXS as user-friendly as possible thanks to numerous improvements to its functionality, adjustability, ergonomics, performance, and connectivity. And with SRAMs acquisition of Hammerhead, the new RED AXS introduces another big novelty. The 2024 Hammerhead Karoo bike computer was developed in close collaboration with the new SRAM RED AXS groupset to offer seamless integration. We put SRAMs latest and lightest electronic groupset to date to the test in various scenarios to find out where it does and doesnt perform.SRAM RED AXS | 2,496 g (manufacturers specs) | 5,130 (including Hammerhead Karoo head unit, casette and powermeter crankset) | Manufacturers websiteThe big innovations of the 2024 SRAM RED AXS groupsetRED, SRAMs flagship road bike groupset, has stood for the ultimate in shifting performance, speed, and minimal weight since its introduction in 2007. Youll typically find the groupset on bikes in the pro peloton, as well as glamorous high-end models beyond the 10,000 mark. The latest iteration of the groupset is even lighter and better. For 2024, SRAM have shaved a whopping 154 g off their top-tier groupset, now bringing the total weight to just 2,496 g with a 1028 t cassette and 48/35 crankset impressive! Most of that is due to the completely redesigned shifters, which have shed 83 g since the last edition. However, the rear derailleur, crankset, chain, and power meter have also been slimmed down for a sleek, fresh look.Opinions on SRAMs hoods are divided: some find the design too chunky, or find that the brakes feel too different from the other brands. But thats set to change as SRAM have taken this criticism to heart, making ergonomics one of the top priorities when designing the new hoods and carbon brake levers. For more control and braking power in the drops, the levers are curved outwards, making them easy to reach, even with the hoods tilted inwards. The new SRAM RED carbon brake levers are curved outwards making them easier to reach. The hoods have also undergone some significant changes. They almost look delicate compared to their predecessors. The widened contact surface and reduced height improve the ergonomics immensely, making them far more comfortable. The new hoods also offer significantly more space between the brake levers and the handlebar. No more pinching your fingers, even if youve got large hands. If you compare the silhouette of the new RED AXS controls with that of the previous RED eTap AXS models, you can clearly see the difference. The fresh new look isnt just due to ergonomic improvements, but also to significant mechanical updates. For example, the positions of the brake lever pivot point and the piston inside the hoods have changed significantly. According to SRAM, this reduces the amount of force required for one-finger braking from the hoods by as much as 80%!The new controls feature another change worth mentioning! Finally, SRAM have introduced additional buttons on the inside of the hoods. You can configure these to suit your preferences, assigning functions like operating the head unit, or shifting gears when youre climbing. The multifunction buttons allow you to shift gears or control any ANT+ capable device, like the new Hammerhead Karoo.Theyre positioned in such a way that theyre easy to reach with your thumbs.Easy adjustability seems to be the American companys new motto, because in addition to the tried-and-trusted adjustment aids for the front and rear derailleurs, the hoods now also feature a few clever adjustment features. Thanks to the line formed by the grip pattern on the top of the hoods, theyre easy to align with the handlebar. Brake lever reach is now easier to adjust, with a hidden screw on the lever blade. The pattern in the rubber grip forms a straight line along the spine of the hoods, making them easy to align with the handlebar.Theres a small screw hidden behind a flap on the brake lever, allowing you to adjust the lever reach. But thats not all, because you only get the full SRAM RED AXS experience when its paired with the new 2024 Hammerhead Karoo. The head unit connects itself to the groupset via the new Auto-Connect feature, and is initially only available as a set with the Hammerhead Karoo. This set, which includes shifters, brake discs, chain, front and read derailleur and Karoo, is priced at 3,350. The cassette and crankset are not included in the set to provide flexibility in choice. The crankset with power meter costs 1,345, and the cassette an additional 435. This brings the total price to a proud 5,130 for the complete RED setup, inclusive of the Hammerhead Karoo head unit and a powermeter. The 2024 SRAM RED AXS groupset in detailThe new SRAM RED AXS groupset also features machined aluminium chainrings like its predecessor. The 50/37, 48/35 and 46/33 t crankset configurations havent changed either, and neither has the option of using an aero 1x setup, something which wont just appeal to time trial riders and triathletes, but also to gravel racers. The optional, integrated power meter is tried and tested too, though its still a bit of a shock to your bank balance when it wears out, despite SRAM offering a discount on replacements. The hidden gem of the new SRAM RED AXS groupset can be found at the rear of the bike this is where the weight reduction measures are most obvious. The new rear derailleur is strongly reminiscent of drilled and filed DIY weight-weenie conversions, with its svelte and airy design. Its great that you can now get it like that from the factory! As usual and expected, the new rear derailleur is compatible with cassettes from 1028 to 1036 t. The new derailleur cage is right on trend, with a carbon construction and oversized design. They even take things one step further with two-piece jockey wheels. The new rear derailleur looks more delicate. Is this oversized yet? The pulley wheel has definitely grown in diameter. The new cassettes remain largely unchanged in terms of both looks and function. Besides weighing a few grams less, the new SRAM RED AXS groupset also comes with two additional cassette options: 1030 and 1036 t. As such, you can now choose from the following cassettes:1028, 1030, 1033, 1036 t.While visually and functionally unchanged, the new 12-speed cassettes are a few grams lighter than the previous generation.Yes, even the chain has been slimmed down considerably. The Flattop chain now features small recesses in the links to save weight wherever possible. You might already be familiar with this from SRAMs Transmission groupsets for mountain bikes. For added efficiency and durability, the SRAM RED AXS groupset relies on hard chrome-plated inner links and rollers. You can also get the chain and cassette with a rather divisive oil slick finish.Testing the 2024 SRAM RED groupsetThe elephant in the room with every SRAM RED AXS equipped bike has long been ergonomics. Its safe to say that it wasnt exactly the highlight of the previous RED groupset. Thankfully, the designers at SRAM have taken your feedback to heart! The slimmer, longer hoods are very comfortable to hold and use in virtually every position. Braking is easy, and you no longer have to be so careful of pinching your fingers between the lever and the bar, as was often the case with the predecessors. The rubber hoods are grippy and pleasant to the touch. Thanks to the integrated pattern, they promise a secure grip, even if you get sweaty hands.Compared with the previous model, the most noticeable difference is the performance and usability of the brakes. Theyre easy to modulate, offering a consistent bite point and plenty of power, delivering arguably one of the best braking performances available on drop bars.We were most impressed with the 1-finger braking performance from the hoods. Even though braking with just one finger takes a bit of getting used to, the SRAM RED AXS brakes scrub off speed reliably and bring the bike to a stop without much effort. This is particularly welcome on fast descents and rough terrain. In situations like these, you need a firm grip on the hoods, with just one finger on the brakes. The new hoods also offer a noticeable upgrade for gravel bikes, and youll be pleased to hear that the new SRAM RED components are completely downwards compatible.Everything under control: the new RED AXS brake levers seem to be optimised for 1-finger braking. We expect the shifting of SRAMs latest top-end groupset to be as fast and reliable as usual. And thats exactly what the SRAM RED AXS groupset delivers fast, precise and crisp shifts as it moves the lightweight chain between the sprockets of the new cassette.SRAM have also addressed the issue of front shifting. It now shifts quicker, and the shifting process is more precise and reliable. Thanks to a new template, setting up the front derailleur should be easier than ever. In direct comparison to SRAMs biggest competitor from Japan, the front derailleur still lags somewhat behind. We werent spared the obligatory dropped chain during our tests.Classic yet modern SRAMs latest RED AXS groupset features familiar lines. The new SRAM RED AXS gets a straight A for adjustability, not just making it easy to set your lever position with visual aids and easily accessible adjuster screws, but also making the front derailleur easier to set up with a new template. As usual, the shifter assignment of the SRAM controls works perfectly and intuitively, setting the bar in this respect. The new buttons also work excellently for quick operation of the Hammerhead Karoo head unit. Due to their placement on the inside of the hoods, similar to the Shimano GRX Di2, theyre easy to reach with your thumbs without robbing you of control. Our conclusion on the new SRAM RED AXSSRAM have taken our feedback to heart. The new SRAM RED AXS sets new standards in terms of usability and ergonomics, bringing their flagship groupset bang up to date. They paid particularly close attention to the hoods, introducing sophisticated braking ergonomics and revised hardware, setting the standard in terms of 1-finger braking power. Combined with a significant weight reduction, this results in an impressive groupset for performance-chasers and tech geeks who have deep pockets.Topsexcellent lever ergonomicseasy and wide-ranging adjustabilityreliable and promising braking performancefeatherweight groupsetFlopspower meter and chainring still one piece not the most sustainable or economical approachDer Beitrag Test debut of the 2024 SRAM RED groupset Effortless wins? erschien zuerst auf GRAN FONDO Cycling Magazine.

Hammerhead Karoo Reboots w/ Sleek Design, More Compatibility & Companion App
Developed in conjunction with the new SRAM RED group, the all-new Hammerhead Karoo finally gives them a companion app and makes it easier than ever to pair devices. Combine that with a better display, improved button layout, and their built-in keyboard, and its a proper contender.Heres everything you need to knowMore storage, brighter screens, better buttonsHammerheads two main goals were to make it easier to pair and connect sensors, and to simplify workout and route syncing. But they also made it easier to control and see, too. And it looks better than ever, with a slightly longer, more angular appearance. The new model is the third iteration of the Karoo, but rather than call it Karoo 3, its just Karoo.Internally, it has 64GB storage, twice as much as before, with 4GB RAM to fit more of their free global maps. And it has more than 2x processing power over Karoo 2, with better efficiency, which helps it render maps and navigation faster while also lasting longer. They claim up to 15 hours of battery life using all features, but theres a battery-saving mode thatll extend that.It has a glossier Gorilla Glass screen, but with better glare reduction and an improved display with ambient light sensor with automatic brightness adjustment to make it easy to see in all light conditions.Theres also now a dedicated power button on the bottom, and the side buttons are bigger and further apart with better haptics. This makes it much easier to use while riding, even with full-finger gloves. Its also a touch screen, giving you multiple options for controlling it. Raining? Lock the screen so raindrops dont mess with your display.Lastly, if youre upgrading from the Karoo 2, just log into your account and itll perform a quick sync during initial setup that automatically ports over all of your info, bikes, and modes, so youre ready to roll in just a few minutes. Theres also a new Single Sign On option that marries your Karoo and AXS app accounts.iOS companion app (Android, too!)The Hammerhead products have always been (and still are) built on the Android operation system. They already have an Android companion app, but that OS had presented challenges iOS. Also, it was an internal resources issue, Hammerhead was a small company prior to SRAMs acquisition. Now, they finally have an iOS mobile companion app, but its not exactly what you think. Unlike Wahoos reliance on the app to customize the screens and data fields (which you do directly on the Karoos screen, and its very easy), the Karoos app is mainly there as a bridge to mobile data.Meaning, once paired with your phone, you can add or sync routes and workouts while away from WiFi, regardless of whether you prefer robots or apples. However, its done a little differently than how it syncs over WiFi:Quick Navigation Send a pin from Google Maps or Apple Maps to Karoo, so you can navigate to it or save itas a Pin. Route File & Workout Importing Share a Route File or a Workout File to your Karoo via the Companion App by using your phones native share feature, selecting the Hammerhead Companion App, and your route/workout will be made available on your Karoo. The only trick with mobile route syncing is that you have to install the base map for the region where the route is over WiFiso, be sure to download your area prior to leaving home. And, as nice as it is to have some mobile functionality, their browser-based dashboard is still where the heavy lifting is done if you want to create new routes with their free builder.Strava, Training Peaks & other integrationsUsing the Karoo or their browser-based dashboard, you can link your various accounts for automatic syncing and uploads. For racers, Training Peaks and TrainerRoad integrations let you send workouts straight from those apps to the device, even when out on the road thanks to the new companion app.Live Tracking (when connected to the mobile app) lets emergency contacts see your location, but also lets you share you location with others so you can meet up.Strava Live Segments will show your position on the segment as youre doing it, with a graphic that slides up from bottom. That bottom bar also slides up for navigation cues, workout cues, and their Climb display. Swipe down to hide it, or click on the tabs to switch between these data fields. The new Karoo supports all ANT+ smart lights with controls, and all brands of rear-facing radars, including the new Trek CarBack. And it pairs with LEV-compatible e-bikes to show data like motor assist level, estimated range, motor output, and the bikes battery level.Routing & NavigationThe Karoo multi-band GNSS satellite reception pulling from GPS, GLONASS, GALILEO, QZSS, and BEIDOU satellites. For stored routes or your current ride, you can select ride in reverse to mix it up or get home and it will reroute based on any one-way streets or other limitations without affecting the saved route file.Choose your surface type preferences and itll help you create routes that prioritize those (road, gravel, or trail). Once a route is saved, itll then give you on-device alerts when the surface type is about to change. Theres also an easy POI capture while riding.Instant pairing, setup, controls & notificationsDesigned alongside the new RED group, it will automatically connect and pair all components on your bike. Which is great, but for many riders thats a one-time affair. Or, at least, a very occasional need. The real trick is that you can then set up those components, customize the controls, and see individual component battery levels directly from the Karoo. Even better, it also pushes low battery alerts to the app to remind you to charge batteries after a ride.Set the new RED Bonus Buttons to swipe through the Karoos screens, turn multi-shift on or off, or even change what the shift paddles do if you want to reverse their pattern. You can even set short and long press controls to show different screens on the Karoo using the Bonus Buttons. Continuous software updates and product feature improvements.Naturally, it has full AXS group integration to show gear selection, too. They say theyre working on getting Shimano Di2 integration re-added, but thats up to Shimano (the Japanese brand pulled back that data access when SRAM acquired Hammerhead). No word on Campy EPS data sharing.E-bike mode shows bike battery status, range estimation, battery burn rates, etc., and will also show that data in the Dashboard for post-ride analysis.A better mountThe new Karoo comes with an updated 31.8mm bar mount with an adjustable mounting plate lets you extend or retract head unit by up to 10mm. A reinforced support arm holds extra weight, so you can use the included accessory adapter for lights or an action camera underneath. The captured mounting bolt is hidden underneath the bar, keeping your cockpit clean without worrying about the bolt falling out during installation. Karoos unique mounting design is license-able (K-Edge already makes compatible mounts & adapters) so that 3rd party brands can offer them, too.All computers also include a standard quarter-turn adapter that lets you mount it to your Garmin-style mount, too.Pricing & AvailabilityThe new Karoo will retail for $474.99 (499.99 / 449.99). Weight is 118g (w/o mount), its IP67 waterproof, USB-rechargeable, and supports English, Spanish, French, German, and Italian out of the box.Hammerhead.ioThe post Hammerhead Karoo Reboots w/ Sleek Design, More Compatibility & Companion App appeared first on Bikerumor.

SRAM Red AXS reclaims lightest groupset mantle and updates ergonomics
CyclistSRAM Red AXS reclaims lightest groupset mantle and updates ergonomicsFive years on from its 12-speed AXS overhaul, SRAM has updated its Red AXS groupset. The new design centres around refined control ergonomics and reduced weight, making it more competitive with Shimanos Dura-Ace in those regards.Tied to the altered shape of the controls are claimed improvements in braking. SRAM says the new levers provide better modulation and require less effort for the same braking power. While the chainset has been made a touch lighter, its changes are largely cosmetic and its chainrings and power meter stick to their one-piece arrangement. However, front shifting is said to be faster thanks to a thinner front derailleur cage and new auto-trim function.Hammerheads new Karoo 3 head unit launches at the same time as SRAM Red AXS, having been co-developed with the groupset for heightened integration.Another of SRAMs brands, Zipp, gets in on the fun too, releasing new tyres and a new set of bars designed to work the renovated Red levers.SRAM Red AXS is available immediately as OE on bikes from over 40 brands and aftermarket too, with prices from 4,090 / 4,570 / 4,090.Cyclist has had the opportunity to test the new SRAM Red AXS groupset over the last few weeks, so be sure to check out our full review.Read more: SRAM Red AXS groupset reviewRead more: Hammerhead Karoo 3 has new internals and longer battery lifeRead more: Zipp ups integration with SL 80 Race bar and Goodyear-made Vector R tyresSeeing the lightCharlotte HeadIf youve been to any hill climb event in the last ten years and taken stock of the bikes being raced, without a doubt youll have noticed that SRAMs old Red22 mechanical rim brake groupset was the most common choice on the more committed builds. It wouldnt have been for the groupsets shifting and braking abilities hill climbers dont do much of either, and while Red22 was fine in those respects, it certainly wasnt significantly better than Shimanos Dura-Ace or Campagnolos Super Record of similar vintages.Red22 was the preeminent choice because it was a damn sight lighter than both. Its 1,741g trumped Super Record by over 200g and Dura-Ace 9000 (incidentally, that groupsets finest ever incarnation) by half that again. However, while subsequent redesigns of Red have undoubtedly increased its functionality, such as the inclusion of disc brakes, wireless electronic shifting and an extra sprocket, they have also increased its weight, to the extent that an equivalent Dura-Ace arrangement has been lighter for a couple of generations now. Thanks to the modern features that are now a prerequisite in groupset design well never again get down to the dizzyingly light weights of old, but in a contemporary context SRAM says the latest Red revision takes back the lightest groupset mantle.Give by taking awaySRAMWhile its dependent on exact setup, new Red AXS is 2,496g, says Jason Fowler, SRAMs road drivetrain product manager. Thats 153g lighter than the previous version, and around 66g lighter than similarly specced Dura-Ace.Looking closely at the more skeletal appearance of the new Red groupset, its easy to see where SRAM has made plenty of the incremental gains necessary to achieve that weight loss. Cutout chain links contribute 13g, the carriers at the centre of the new Paceline X rotors are more aggressively pared back, shoulder sections of the brake callipers have been removed and the outer plate of the rear derailleurs parallelogram has been hollowed out (a feature that would no doubt appeal to the hill climbers that have unofficially done similar to their Red22 derailleurs).Hidden in the tweaked carbon layup of the crank arms, SRAM found another 29g, but by far the biggest contributor to Reds diet has been at the levers, which the brand says have dropped 41.5g each.Thats a considerable saving so high up the bike, says Fowler. It becomes apparent in the swing weight when climbing on the hoods.Yet it will be the revised ergonomics of the controls that will be more tangible to riders.SRAMWe were happy with the shape of the last generation levers, and theyve remained a success to this day SRAM Red was used by all six Grand Tour winners last year but we knew it was an area we could develop, says Fowler. Ergonomics arent something you can really model on a computer though. Real rider feedback was essential, and its been a four-year process to update the controls shape. Most obviously, the pommel of the controls is much smaller. The length of the body is longer by around six millimetres too. This is to makes them more comfortable to grip when riding on the hoods, says Fowler. The smaller pommel fits in the hand more comfortably, and the longer body allows more space for finger wrap underneath. This was allowed by shifting the piston arrangement inside the control body. It has gone from a vertical pull-piston in the pommel, where squeezing the brake lever pulls the piston downward to compress the hydraulic fluid and actuate the brakes, to a horizontal push-piston inside the lever body.Rearranging things like this, as well as reshaping the brake levers themselves, also allowed us to manipulate braking modulation. The lever pivot could be much higher, creating more leverage. Along with moving where the brake calliper applies pressure to the rotor further outboard, for the same force it now takes 80% less effort to brake from the hoods and 33% less effort from the drops. How and where the braking power is applied isnt set in stone either, as the levers possess independent adjustment of reach (how far the brake levers sit away from the bars) and contact point (when in the lever travel the brakes engage). SRAM says there should be plenty of scope for both, too, because the shift paddles are now slimmer and longer, so theres more free space between lever and bars.Shifting gearsSRAMThe last time SRAM updated Red, the groupset went to 12-speed. That introduced SRAMs X-Range gearing concept, which uses a 10t smallest sprocket and more compact chainrings in an attempt to create both close steps and more range. The groupset also served as the starting point for three overhauled groupset tiers below it, as well as the extension of SRAMs mix-and-match AXS concept into its road portfolio. It was a biggie, so while it would be fair to say this new SRAM Red AXS groupsets weight and ergonomic changes validly grab headlines, ultimately its a simply a step on from the last generations step change. That is reflected in the gearing this time round. While there are some cosmetic changes in the machined one-piece chainrings, they are offered in the same three pairings (46/33, 48/35, 50/37 , with three extra 52/39, 54/41, 56/43 available aftermarket) and SRAM continues with its integrated power meter.I know weve taken flack for not making it separate to the rings, but the longer weve persevered with the design the more evident it has become that its simply not an issue. Our chainrings just dont really wear out, so the return rate of consumed units has been incredibly low, says Fowler.New cassettes have been added though, with 10-30t and 10-36t options doubling the number of options offered next to the preexisting 10-28t and 10-33t, all using the one-piece machined steel X-DOME construction. SRAMs Rainbow anodised finish is now an option across the board too, chain included. We see it in our AXS app data that the 10t is used a lot by pros, not just in sprints but on descents too, but we wanted to offer more options for climbing, says Fowler. Its common knowledge that riders such as Jonas Vingegaard and Wout van Aert have been pairing the 10-36T with our Red 1x chainring as well.SRAMDespite the extra ratios, all drivetrain setups are accommodated for with just a single rear derailleur now. SRAMs well-regarded Orbit Fluid damper is carried over to keep the chain under control, but the pulley wheels have been pepped up: they are now larger and come with hybrid ceramic bearings. Its the closest one of the groupset makers has come to producing their own OSPW system that specialist third parties such as CeramicSpeed offer as upgrades.SRAMFront shifting has historically not been SRAMs greatest strength, so Fowler says this was an area of focus this time round.Id say the first time a rider uses new Red, theyll notice the ergonomics, then the braking, and the front shifting not long after, he says. Its faster and more precise, thanks to a narrower cage, but there wont be any risk of rasp because it also has an auto-trim feature, so will micro-adjust depending on where the chain is on the cassette. As with the rear derailleur, no matter than chainring pairing the same front derailleur is all thats required, and SRAM says it aims for setup to be foolproof as well, thanks to a new guide tool. The digital ageSRAMAs soon as derailleurs and shifters went from communicating via cables, ratchets and springs to wireless protocols and servos, the potential for head units to play a key part in the function of a groupset was introduced. SRAM is the first to finally fully exploit that promise, as new Red is the first groupset to be co-developed with a head unit.Hammerhead was acquired by SRAM in 2021, so both the tech brands latest Karoo 3 computer and SRAMs flagship groupset could be developed in-house simultaneously. The latest Karoo build on the Karoo 2 by remaining an incredible computer in its own right, but functions on another level with Red, says Fowler. It connects to the groupset automatically, letting you configure shift settings direct from your bars or assess battery status. It works both ways too: the Red hoods have Bonus Buttons on the inside of the pommels that we like to set to control pages on the Karoo 3.SRAMThe computer will be supplied with the groupset as standard when its bought aftermarket, and appears as OE on stock bikes too. Refreshingly (were looking at you, Shimano) though new Red has only just been launched, customers shouldnt have to search too hard to find it. With the exception of one or two leaks, new Red has gone from being nowhere to everywhere: over 40 bike brands already offer builds and all SRAMs mens and womens pro road teams are now racing on the stuff. Old Red22 might still dominate the niche of hill climbs, but new Red AXS looks set to dominate almost everywhere else.SRAM Red AXS weights and pricingNew SRAM Red AXS is available in several guises. It is offered on stock builds from the following manufacturers:SRAMThe groupset can be bought aftermarket too. Base price is 3,000 / 3,350 / $3,000, that includes a Hammerhead Karoo 3 computer, but not a chainset or cassette. Their cost is extra and varies dependent on spec:Cassettes:From 390/435/$390 to 410/460/$410From 450/505/$450 to 470/525/$470 in a rainbow finishChainsets:With PM: 1,200/1345/$1,200Non-PM: 700/785/$700The larger chainring pairings (52/39, 54/41, 56/43) and the 48T and 52T 1x chainrings must be bought individually:Cranks: 400/450/$400Chainrings: 800/895/$800 (includes PM).
