- BIKERUMOR.COMHJC Furion 3 Aero Road Helmet Combines Unmatched Fit, Safety & Solid Value: ReviewThis new HJC Furion 3 is an updated version of the Korean helmet makers aero road bike helmet, with tweaked aerodynamic shaping, new safety features inside, and an updated fit system. Overall, it looks like a pretty standard high-end aero road helmet thats not quite as expensive as much of the competition. So when they added a new hi-viz orange option last autumn, we thought it was the perfect opportunity to give one a try while we tried to avoid sitting inside on the trainer as the days got colder and darker.HJC Furion 3 vented aero road helmet with SLID anti-rotation(All photos/Cory Benson)Developed for racing in the pro peloton with the Total Energies squad, HJC created the new HJC Furion 3 to be a top-performing aero road race helmet with top-tier safety, as well. But, HJC also worked to keep it in line with their overall more affordable ethos, making it a versatile all-rounder for regular road & gravel riders, too.So instead of simply adding on a 3rd-party rotational impact protection system, they created their own Sliding Layer Impact Distribution (SLID) solution, not dissimilar to POCs original SPIN pads. For HJC, though, located strategically just at the top of your head, these low-density gel SLID pads are designed to protect the rider from both rotational and lower-g linear forces, most common in real-world cycling crashes. The selective application of these two large SLID pads on a slim plastic bridge across the top of the helmet ultimately allows for quite unrestricted airflow through the helmet and over the top of the riders head, making the Furion 3 exceptionally well-ventilated.Another key revised feature is the Furion 3s new dial adjustability, offering a uniquely adjustable and customizable fitSneaky Wide Range, One-Time-Adjust Comfortable FitWhile most premium helmets offer a wide range of fit adjustability through a rear dial adjustment, the Furions SelFit Pro dial pulls in just 7.5mm of strap per side, which doesnt seem like much at first. But thats not even half of its real fit story. In fact, the Furion 3 is really much better than most in wide fit adjustability. Thats because, beyond the dial, the front attachment point for the side straps that lead into the dial adjuster has 5 positions, also 7.5mm apart. That means the 15mm of rear dial adjustment adds to 60mm of front attachment adjustability for a real fit range of 7.5cm. Our size S helmet opens up fully to 58cm (typically a size L figure) and cinches down to 50.5cm. What that means in practice is that if you are on the cusp of sizes, you almost certainly can size down for a smaller, lighter shell. But equally nice, if you are on the lower end of their range, you can really tailor the fit to your head. Plus, theres also 36mm of rear height adjustability in 13 steps, to really dial in your perfect fit.But thats still not all to be said about its fit. Its actually the springiness in the fit thats the HJC Furion 3s real secret. The HJC SelFit Pro is all about setting your fit once, and then not needing to readjust the dial every time you put the helmet on, or take it off. Once you set your fit, SelFit Pro will stretch almost 6cm to make it easy to take the helmet off your head. But, then it returns to securely hold the helmet in place on your head, in the precise fit youve already dialed in. No more need to adjust your helmet with every ride. The full range of adjustment is still always there, though perfect for when seasons change and you need a winter cap to stay warm riding year-round.Riding with the new HJC Furion 3Out on the road, the truly light 230g small Furion 3 feels light on the head. The aero design focuses most of its vent openings across the open front of the helmet, while leaving the middle of the shell smooth over the top for less aerodynamic drag. Yet the vents and internal channels do a great job of moving plenty of air across and around your head to keep cool. Weve been wearing the Furion 3 in cool to cold autumn and winter rides only since it arrived. But the ventilation is obvious enough that weve ridden almost exclusively with wind-blocking caps or at least a light Buff to stay warm, so far. Were pretty confident that it will do a solid job of keeping heads cool in warm weather, too.And undoubtedly, with its unique stretch fit, the Furion offers one of the best-fitting, most customized-feeling fits of any helmet weve tested. The fact that it now comes in this hi-viz orange shell is simply an added visibility bonus this time of year, as daylight always feels in short supply.Tech details5-piece polycarbonate shell in-molded with EPS foamSliding Layer Impact Distribution (SLID) linear & rotational impact protectionCoolPath central support bridge and internal air channel system360 SelFit Pro dial adjustable retention systemIonic+ silver-infused antimicrobial padstested to European CE EN 1078:2012+A1:2012 & Korean B531R50724001 safety standardsUKCA testing is currently underway, but HJC does not currently sell bike helmets in the USA, so no CPSC testingavailable in 3 sizes: S 51-56, M 55-59 & L 58-63cm245g claimed weight, +/-10gHJC Furion 3 Pricing, options & availabilityThe new HJC Furion 3 aero road helmet sells for 209, including free delivery. The 23-year-old, who had just finished racing the AlUla Tour before arriving on the island, said he felt helpless, fragile and completely at the mercy of something I couldnt control.I was hit by a hit-and-run driver, he said, he was coming from behind, speeding, over 100 kmh, well over the speed limit. I was perfectly visible. I was wearing a fluorescent yellow vest and had my red taillight flashing. Despite this, he didnt slow down, he didnt move, he didnt do anything. He came up behind me and hit me with his mirror and the front of the car. In that moment, I realised that if he had hit me head-on, I probably wouldnt be here today.Garofoli, who fortunately suffered no broken bones, returned to his hotel and saw the car, which had been left at the scene, and the police identified the driver. Im sharing all this not to be controversial, but to remind us how helpless we are on the road and how it takes just one second, one wrong choice, to change a life. Today, thats how it is. Tomorrow we start again, with a little more fear, but with so much gratitude for still being here, he said.Andrea Piccolo arrestedSprint Cycling AgencyFormer EF Education-EasyPost rider Andrea Piccolo was arrested last week after being found in possession of counterfeit money. - BIKERUMOR.COMRimpact Announces Updated Version of Its Tuned Mass Damper, the TMD V2Rimpact originally made a name for itself with its namesake tire inserts, but its product range has grown to include several items catering mostly toward the gravity-riding crowd. The brand also makes a direct-mount chain damping device/chainrings, and it just announced updated versions with more tuning options. Last year, Rimpact added to its list of damping products with the original TMD (Tuned Mass Damper), a vibration-damping system hidden inside the forks steerer tube. Now, Rimpact has announced the TMD V2, an updated version that builds on the success of its predecessor and aims to improve upon it.Rimpacts TMD V2 suspends a weight between two springs, and packages it to fit securely inside the forks steerer. What Is a Tuned Mass Damper? In gravity-oriented mountain biking, damping vibration is a problem with many solutions. Our frames, suspension, tires, handlebars, and grips are already working to manage vibrations. Adding to that list is the Tuned Mass Damper (TMD). TMDs are among the more recent advancements in vibration-damping technology to capture the attention of professional and amateur riders alike, and they have grown quickly in popularity among downhill and enduro racers. The oversimplified explanation is that TMDs work by suspending a weight between springs. The sprung mass absorbs vibration, thereby reducing the amount transmitted to the rider. By damping vibration, TMDs reduce rider fatigue, improve comfort and control, calm the bikes handling, and make it more predictable through rough terrain. While TMDs are more widely used in other applications, were aware of only a couple of TMDs specifically designed for mountain biking currently on the market. The Rimpact TMD and the CounterSycle. The CounterSycle is an externally mounted version that is more obvious, given its visible mounting location outside of the bikes head tube.Rimpact TMD V2The TMD V2 damps vibration discreetly, hidden from view inside the forks steerer tube.Rimpacts original TMD was arguably a more elegant solution compared to the CounterSycle, given that it was completely hidden from view. Like its predecessor, the TMD V2 remains incognito and is housed discreetly in the empty space within your forks steerer tube. It consists of a 250-gram brass weight, which is suspended between two springs. The suspended mass responds to inputs with the goal of counteracting vibration before it reaches the riders hands. With the V2 update, Rimpact states that it has added end-stroke elastomers to add even more composure and control on the biggest hits. Additionally, Rimpact chose springs with extended travel to allow the mass to respond to inputs more quickly. While the previous version came with three sets of springs for varying conditions, the aforementioned extended travel apparently combines the best of all three into a single, carefully tuned spring setup: letting the mass respond faster to trail inputs while maintaining control through the biggest hits no swapping required. The Rimpact TMD V2 fits most bikes, is easy to install, and could improve your comfort and control on the bike. According to Rimpact, the TMD V2 requires only a 4mm allen key and a 10mm spanner to install, and it will fit any fork with a1- metallic steerer. It is optimized for steerer lengths 180mm or longer, but were told it can fit shorter ones using conventional headset spacers. Interestingly, Rimpact states that the TMD V2 is not compatible with gravel bikes, but that a gravel-specific unit is in the works. Color us intrigued.Rimpacts TMDs are already widely used, including by athletes on a number of World Cup DH teams. These include Trek Factory Racing, Canyon CLLCTV, Scott Factory DH, Cube Factory Racing, and NukeProof Axess Racing. With that type of acceptance among the fastest gravity riders in the world, it would certainly seem like theres something to it.Rimpact TMD V2: Pricing and AvailabilityIf youre interested in Rimpacts TMD V2 or any of its other products, head to the Rimpact website to learn more. The TMD V2 is priced at 199.99 and is currently available to preorder, with shipping starting March 16, 2026.rimpactmtb.comThe post Rimpact Announces Updated Version of Its Tuned Mass Damper, the TMD V2 appeared first on Bikerumor.0 Reacties 0 aandelen 437 Views
