And its a bit wider than normal cycling caps, helping better push that wind and any moisture off to the sides. Lastly, its shaped, but deconstructed, so it wont get all bent out of shape if you need to stuff it in your jersey pocket. The drop-down ear cover can be flipped up and tucked inside if conditions warm up slightly. NTA continues to force Irish Rail to stay on X despite child sexual abuse material scandal
Irish and international experts have said social media platform X was generating child sexual abuse material, as well as nonconsensual undressing images of adults, but the National Transport Authority (NTA) is continuing to hold Irish Rail to a contractual obligation to post updates and to reply to messages on the platform formally known as Twitter. The NTAs lack of movement on the issue reflects the Irish Governments position to stay on X, but the authority did not answer questions relating to whether there has been any mandate from Governmenal level or if it would remove the contractual obligation put on Irish Rail as a public service obligation provider to be active on X.It was reported yesterday that the European Commission has launched an investigation into X after Grok, the AI system linked to the platform, generated millions of undressing images. The Center for Countering Digital Hate estimates that Grok is responsible for generating around 3 million sexualised images, including about 23,000 that appeared to depict children. It said that Elon Musks AI tool produced an estimated 190 sexualized, user-generated images per minute over an 11-day period.A number of passenger and campaign groups, as well as the Green Partys spokesperson on transport, have criticised the transport authoritys inaction.Four groups South East on Track, Cork Commuter Coalition, Dublin Commuter Coalition, and the Galway Commuter Coalition have written to the NTA, while a fifth, Rail Users Ireland, also said Irish Rail should be released from its contractual obligation to post and respond to messages on X.Cllr Feljin Jose, a Dublin City councillor who is also the Green Partys spokesperson on transport, said: Its not acceptable that the only way to get live service updates for Irish public transport is by having an account on X, which is now under investigation for CSAM. The National Transport Authority and Iarnrd ireann / Irish Rail need to start providing accessible and reliable updates on their own platforms instead of relying on X.The four groups wrote: We are writing as rail and commuter advocacy groups across Ireland, to request that Iarnrd ireann move its real-time service updates regarding cancellations and delays from the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to your own website and official channels.Currently, passengers seeking up-to-date information about service disruptions must have an active X account to view these critical updates, the groups said, outlining how this creates several significant problems The groups said that the current setup requires passengers to maintain an account on a third-party social media platform to access essential public transport information creates an unnecessary barrier. Many passengers, particularly elderly travellers or those who choose not to use social media, are effectively excluded from receiving timely service updates.Recent controversies surrounding X, including serious issues with child safety and content moderation failures involving Grok AI, make it an increasingly inappropriate platform for a state-owned public service to rely upon as its primary and in some cases, only communication channel. Iarnrd ireann should not require its customers to engage with a platform facing such significant ethical and safety concerns. Dublin City Council have this week stopped posting on the platform because of these concerns, the letter said. The four also said that there are service reliability issues in relying on a third-party platform. The groups want real-time service updates, including information on delays/cancellations/amendments posted directly on irishrail.ie, and on the TFI Live and the Irish Rail apps. The groups also said that they want clear, specific information about all accepted alternative services to reduce passenger confusion and stress during disruptions, and for the practice of saying delays or cancellations are due to operational issues to end.The groups wrote: Other international providers have recently switched to a more detailed information provision in the events of issues or delays. For example, Dutch Railways, instead of saying operational reasons, now say a fallen wire, or broken down train, [and] that allows passengers to more accurately determine whether to find alternative transport or to wait. It may also be useful to include a scale, letting the customer know whether or not the incident is minor, notable, or major where possible. An NTA spokesperson said: Transport operators communicate with customers through a variety of channels, including their own websites, social media outlets, and the TFI Customer Contact Centre. In the case of planned or foreseen disruptions, operators notify the public via those channels and where appropriate, via ad campaigns across traditional and online platforms. In the case of unforeseen disruption, the most up-to-date information is communicated to customers in a number of ways, including on-board and at-station announcements along with passenger information displays where available, the spokesperson said. The NTA spokesperson added: It is also made available via social media and, where possible, on operator websites. Customers can also contact the TFI Customer Contact Centre in these situations. NTA continues to engage with operators to improve ways to provide clear and timely information to customers.

Even now I watch it back and think, How did I do that?: Matthew Brennan Q&A
CyclistEven now I watch it back and think, How did I do that?: Matthew Brennan Q&ACyclist: What was your highlight of a successful 2025 season?Matthew Brennan: There are two my first pro win at the GP Denain, more of a Classics-style race; then going on to the Volta a Catalunya and winning my first WorldTour race [Stage 1]. Not just the win, but doing it by managing the gap almost perfectly. Even now I watch it back and think, How did I do that? You kicked on from there, with your win count for the season ending well into double figures. What did that dramatic Catalan win on a rainy run-in do for your confidence? It gives a lot of belief in yourself and what is possible. I dont sit here believing Im the strongest rider in the peloton, but this is whats good about bike racing theres much more to it than just power. Its about knowing where to be at certain points, managing your energy levels. What have been some of the biggest lessons youve learned at Visma-Lease a Bike in your first year?I got my first proper coach. I started getting daily schedules of some of the best sessions I can do to help stimulate my body, and have worked with strength coaches. You start to look at your nutrition and we have chefs on the races. These are big ten-per centers Ive not been exposed to before. Were not even talking about altitude at the moment, because why look for a one per cent improvement over those? I think thats what happened this year: we found a lot of big areas where weve managed to find improvement. How did that affect you in past races? It sounds simple: dont eat gluten. But how do we stop traces, eat properly, keep healthy? When Giles Pidcock [boss of Brennans previous team, Fensham Howes-MAS Design, and father of Tom] used to take us to junior races, we ate carbs, bread, pasta. Halfway through my first junior season I was diagnosed and they did a really good job of looking after me with gluten-free pasta and the like, but at the end of a race Id always finish with fuzzy eyes and almost like a bonking sensation.I just thought I wasnt eating enough. Obviously I didnt know anything about adapting to a coeliac lifestyle. Giles jokes with me now that if I can still get a top ten in a UCI junior race without being able to fuel, then I can win whatever bike race I want in the future.Who got you into cycling? My dad, Kevin. There was a big, fast group ride up north [in Darlington], racing to the cafe and home. Every week it was a case of how far can you get? That was a big thing for me. It brought a lot of good things and improves your group etiquette, looking after others to make it work to your advantage, especially when youre small, hanging on and hiding in the wheels. You see a lot of pro riders who dont actually know how to ride as a group and that surprises me.If you werent a pro cyclist, where would you be now?Id be at Loughborough University, studying biomedical engineering. That would have been my Plan B. This is the better life.Matthew Brennan seriously impressed during his first season at Visma Lease-a-Bike, winning 12 races and absorbing as much information about training and diet as possible.James YorkWeve seen you win sprints and do well in cobbled races, hilly races and short time-trials. In your own words, what kind of rider are you?I dont class myself as a rider of any kind of specificness. For the moment, I try to push myself in everything I can. Im not saying Im not a TT rider because Im only 20 years old. Guys in their prime are 27 or 28. Who knows, in eight years time I could be a fantastic climber. At the moment it seems to be dictating towards a hard day and then a sprint finish or a reduced group for me. But were finding out that with the right helpers I can potentially beat some of the pure sprinters too. Its just an exploration project at the moment. When you were younger, which riders did you look up to?I always thought Micha Kwiatkowski was quite cool. Hes a really good role model. Its nice racing with him; you can see he knows what hes doing. Hes so underrated, capable of winning his own bike races and guiding others. If hes moving up and you dont know why, theres always a reason for it.What does winning a bunch sprint feel like?Leading into it, youre trying to spot the patterns and understand who is where and which riders you know will be there at the finish, but also trying to not get involved in the messy parts because that wastes a lot of mental energy. Its about trying to get there with the least stress possible.Last year, maybe I was stressing a bit more than I should have been in these bunch sprints. It doesnt add anything. I settled down in my thought processes, swept the rubbish away and focussed on whats actually happening. When you do that, you bring in the important things.Emotion doesnt really play a part in the bike race, to be honest. Your goal is to get across the line first. If you do that, thats great; if not, its frustrating but I dont associate my feelings as much with sport now. I think it has been really good in the development process to not kick off and have a tantrum. Just sit down, see what happened and look at what you can do next time.If you had to pick one race youd love to win, what would it be?The Tour of Flanders. Paris-Roubaix as well. Any Classic. Im going to ask for Milan-San Remo next year lets see whether I get it.The post Even now I watch it back and think, How did I do that?: Matthew Brennan Q&A appeared first on Cyclist.

Gravaa Declares Bankruptcy Despite Race-Winning Performances of its Pressure-Adjusting Hubs
While it might have seemed like yet another gimmicky product, Gravaas pressure-adjusting hubs were raced to high-profile victories that demonstrated their usefulness in the right situations. In fact, Marianne Vos won the 2024 Gravel World Championships and her 14th World Championship Rainbow Jersey while using the system. Last year, Team Visma Lease-a-Bike raced the Gravaa hubs to another victory at Paris-Roubaix under Pauline Ferrand-Prvot.We first reported on Gravaas innovative pressure-adjusting hubs back in 2021. The system, which became known as KAPS (Kinetic Air Pressure System), promised onboard, on-the-fly tire pressure adjustments via a unique hub design and handlebar-mounted controls, and seemed very promising. After all, we can think of plenty of times when it would be advantageous to adjust tire pressures without getting off the bike or even slowing down. The perceived performance benefits were backed up by those race-winning performances on the cobbled streets of Paris-Roubaix and the highly variable road surfaces of Gravel World Champs. The oversized Gravaa hub requires special brake rotors, which were included with purchase. So, we were a bit surprised to hear that Gravaa recently filed for bankruptcy. Unfortunately, it seems that just because something is a good idea and performs as intended doesnt mean its destined for commercial success. While the Gravaa system has enjoyed publicity from its partnership with Team Visma Lease-a-Bike, the aforementioned victories, and has been on the market and available to consumers, it sounds like sales volume wasnt quite high enough to keep the brand afloat. In a statement from Gravaas Commercial Director, John Zopfi, he said, To truly scale, two critical elements remained: a full tubeless setup and a lower price point. The tubeless setup was planned for launch in Q1. The lower price could only be achieved through volume. To reach volume, we needed to scale up. To scale up, we needed capital and firm commitments from potential volume customers.A look at the doodads inside one of Gravaas early hubs (photo from Gravaas Facebook). That statement highlights one of the shortcomings of the Gravaa system: the lack of a commercially available tubeless-compatible system. We were told that one of the biggest issues with tubeless compatibility was keeping sealant from getting into the hub. Apparently, the membrane used to keep sealant out of the valve/hub worked but required regular cleaning for the system to function properly. While that might be tolerable for pros with team mechanics, that would not be ideal for everyday consumers. It sounds like Gravaa finally had the issue solved, but unfortunately, not quite soon enough to improve the brands financial situation. And despite the fact that anyone running tubes or tubulars has been able to purchase complete wheelsets with Gravaa hubs, the price has been another barrier to entry. Complete road andgravel wheelsets with Reserve carbon rims cost 3.900 and rise to 4.400 with DT Swiss GRC500 rims. Even the most budget-friendly option, a limited-edition build with Handgespaakt rims, was going for 2.995. But as mentioned above, Gravaa was stuck in somewhat of a Catch-22 type of situation: they needed to scale to lower prices, but lowering prices was dependent on increasing volume, which required scaling, and so onThe Gravaa x Handgespaakt complete wheelset. So, is that the end of the Gravaa system? Maybe, but maybe not. What happens next is still uncertain. A curator has been appointed and will assess whether parts of the company, technology, or brand may continue under new ownership, said John Zopfi. At this stage, I simply dont know what that will look like or who will be involved.Given the performance benefits of Gravaas pressure adjustment system, we doubt its the last well see of it, or at least something quite similar. Well keep you posted if we hear of any new developments.gravaa.comThe post Gravaa Declares Bankruptcy Despite Race-Winning Performances of its Pressure-Adjusting Hubs appeared first on Bikerumor.

    How to Wash Cycling Clothes
I will never forget the time that I was on a group bike ride with a friend. We were talking about our favorite bike shorts. Both of us were absolutely obsessed with the Pearl Izumi PRO Short, and we were both wearing them!I told her they were my first pair ever. You see, I had them for YEARS, and the chamois was like new. I loved them so much I got a second pair, even though they are pricey. She said Oh. Really? Mine are great too! I am not sure how long they will last, though. I throw them in the dryerI probably shouldnt?Well, I am not going to lieI was a little horrified. Hopefully, I recovered well and wasnt TOO dramatic about what an intrinsically bad idea it is to put cycling shorts in the dryer. Then, it got me thinking. Maybe there are other women out there who arent really sure how to wash cycling clothes, too!So, if you have ever wondered if you are washing your clothes the right way, or what the must follow rules are vs. the ones that you can be a little more free withor even how to get that stink out of your sweaty cycling kits, my friend, read on. This article is for you!Quick Tips for Washing Cycling ClothesConsider using mesh laundry bags for delicate itemsWash cycling kit right away after each rideAlways check labels firstZip all zippers, fasten velcro, and turn items inside Use cold water with mild detergent Never put cycling clothes in the dryerTip #1: Wash Cycling Clothes Right Away or Hang Up Until You Can WashGiven the nature of the material of cycling clothes and just how much we sweat when we ride, you really want to wash your cycling kit right away. The longer it sits, the more it is going to smell, and the more bacteria will build up.Its especially important that you dont throw your clothes in a hamper or bin. So, if you cant wash them that day, be sure to hang them up until you can. And, my friend, cycling clothes arent like that pair of pajama pants that you only wear to bed. They really do need to be washed every single time you wear them. If its possible, try to avoid multiple wears between washes. Now I understand that on a bikepacking trip this may not always be possible. However, at home, do your clothes a favor and make sure they are washed between each wear.I have found that once certain fibers get really stinky, sometimes there is just no way to fully remove the smell.Tip #2 Check All the Labels Before You Wash and Consider Your Washer SettingsYou really want to give those labels a once over, at least before the first time you wash. You want to make sure you arent trying to wash something that needs to be spot cleaned. For example, a lot of cycling gloves are spot wash only because of the components that are in the gloves. Now I will be honest, I dont usually bother checking the normal jersey or shorts for their wash instructions. I just figure that no one would ever make ones that you couldnt put in a washing machine! However, some may be hand-wash only, so you might want to use the hand-wash cycle on your machine if you are being super careful.Full disclosure, I am not super careful myself. So far, I have gotten away with washing everything on the normal setting. But, if you are a big rule follower and want to make sure you handwash where handwashing is specified? Definitely check the labels first.Tip #3 Consider Washing Your Cycling Clothes Separately From All Other Clothes Especially If They Are StinkyNow you will note that I say consider hereand I say that for a few reasons. There have been several times I have thrown my cycling clothes in with everything else and have gotten away with it.However, if my clothes were especially sweaty or stinky, I wouldnt want to take the chance that the smell would permeate my whole load and not come out. It hasnt happened so far, but if it did how terrible would that be?Also, I have definitely had scenarios where my bra hooks have gotten stuck on the mesh of my cycling bibs. It pulled them, and that wasnt ideal. It could have really damaged the bibs because I wasnt careful.Tip #4 Zip Zippers, Fasten Velcro, and Turn Some Items Inside Out (Read on to See Which Ones!)Cycling clothes can take a little more prep than your normal laundry, but its worth it. This can really get them clean and protect them from the machine/other pieces of clothing. The first thing you want to do is make sure that all zippers on your jackets/jerseys are zipped up. Then, you will want to turn these items inside out. This will protect the zippers from hitting the sides of the machine during washing and possibly breaking/getting damaged.I have never had any of my cycling zippers get messed up. However, I have had a few sweatshirts over the years that have been an issue. I didnt zip them, put them through the washer AND dryer, and the zipper part of the zipper fell off. If you dont want this to happen to your cycling clothes, especially those pricey jackets, be sure to zip them up and turn them inside out!Now this is a big one, you really want to take the time to fasten all velcro. So, for example, we have these arm sleeves that you can wear in cooler weather and they fasten closed at the wrists. If we dont fasten them and make sure all of the sticky parts are completely covered they will absolutely latch on to the delicate fabric of jerseys and pull them. Yes, if you are wondering this has happened. It is definitely really sad when you have pulls on your favorite jersey! Finally, consider whether or not you watch each item to be washed inside out. As I mentioned you always want to wash anything with a zipper inside out. With other clothes I like to wash the most soiled side out. So if I am riding in the rain and get covered in mud I will wash items right side out.If I am not, I tend to wash most things inside out because that means the stinky parts (pits, chamois) will hopefully be washed a little better.Other than the zippers I am not sure how much it really matters if you wash things inside out or not. I do it because I like the idea of getting my clothes as clean as possible in each wash.Tip #5 Use Mesh Laundry Bags for Delicate ItemsA great way to protect the more delicate items in your cycling laundry is to just use mesh laundry bags. These are great for items like cycling caps to keep the brim from getting messed up. They are also good for gloves if they are machine washable (even just to keep them together). I also use them for bib shorts to protect the straps from getting pulled or stretched out.Additionally, I will also sometimes use these for those pesky velcro items too. This makes it a little more difficult for the velcro to snag. Finally, if I am short on time and really need to wash my bras with my cycling clothes this can keep the bra hooks from snagging on other items too.Tip #6 Use Cold Water With Mild Detergent, Sports Detergent, or BothSo now lets talk about the actual wash cycle. First of all, you always want to wash your cycling clothes with cold water. Hot water has a tendency to break down delicate fibers. Therefore, using cold water will prolong the life of your clothes.Additionally, its best to use a mild detergent for the same reason. I usually use either Seventh Generation detergent (I like the lavender scent, its VERY subtle), or All Free and Clear. But, when our cycling clothes are really stinky we will usually reach for a sports detergent like WIN. There are many detergents that are designed specifically for sports fabrics. I like to use the scented version of WIN. I tried the unscented, but I find that the scented one just seems to do a better job of getting the stink out. This could certainly be in my head, but that is my preference! I dont use it all of the time because it is definitely pricier than regular detergent.Sometimes I will use the regular detergent and sports detergent together for a double whammy if its really bad. Admittedly we have some pieces that we just cant seem to get the stink out of permanently. But, at least this gives them a bit of a reprieve so that they dont stink before we even put them on.Also, if there are any grease stains on the clothes, Ill treat those first with some Dawn dish detergent.Tip #7: Hang or Lay Flat All Cycling Clothes to Dry. Do NOT Put Them in the Dryer (Unless the Label Says Its OK)As I mentioned above, heat is NOT the friend of cycling clothing fabrics as a general rule. The only cycling items I will ever put in the dryer are socks, as long as they arent wool and the washing instructions say its OK.The chamois in cycling shorts in particular is something that you really dont want to break down. It can make for a very uncomfortable experience on the bike, so we want to preserve these pads as much as humanly possible.Dryers, even on lower settings, tend to get too hot for the majority of cycling fabrics, so I just tend to hang all of our cycling clothes up to dry. We have a metal drying rack in our downstairs bathroom right next to the washer and dryer for this purpose.Yes, its a bit annoying to have the rack there, but it is way better to be annoyed by extra drying time and the rack taking up space than to have to purchase the clothing sooner because it wears out. There is nothing worse than pulling on a pair of cycling shorts and finding that they are basically see through now because the fibers have been worn down. This does happen, but if you use heat in the dryer it is bound to happen more frequently than if you dont.Following These Tips Will Help You Keep Your Cycling Clothes in Shape for Literal YEARSMy husband and I have been cycling regularly now for almost a decade, and we have taken excellent care of our cycling clothes. I would say that they are some of our most cared for items in the home.As a result of washing them the proper way (with some noted exceptions), we have been rewarded with longevity, and only had to discard a few items over the years from straight up wear and tear. Now there have been a few items we have shredded in falls too, but we can hardly blame the clothing for THAT!With just a few precautions and reasonably priced tools like mesh bags and a drying rack, you too can protect your cycling clothes for years to come. And if you are wondering which of my items have held up the best? It would be my Pearl Izumi PRO Bib Shorts. I have two pairs and have been wearing them frequently for the past 6/7 years. My first pair admittedly is a little bit more worn than the second, but after years and years of trying all the bib shorts I keep coming back to these staples whenever I want a really substantial chamois and comfy ride. Be sure to check out our review of these excellent shorts and grab yourself a pair (if you dont have them already!).
