Review: New Schwalbe Pro One AllRoad Tires Split the Difference Between Road & Gravel
The new Schwalbe Pro One Allroad isnt entirely a new tire. In fact, its a bit of a mashup of the old Schwalbe G-One Speed gravel bike tread on a newer Pro One road bike tire casing and with the latest Addix Race rubber. But by combining the gravel and road tech, Schwalbe has managed to create a more versatile tire, perfect for those longer and faster road rides that inevitably end up on slippery cobblestones or back roads that devolve into dirt. Schwalbe Pro One AllRoad blurs line between road & gravel(All photos/Cory Benson)Schwalbe first introduced a road tire with little dots for tread all the way back in 2015 when they dove into road tubeless. That tire was called the S-One. And designed for racing Paris-Roubaix, Schwalbe only offered it in a 30mm width. At the same time, they launched their gravel tire family with 35mm & 40mm widths of the first G-One, with a similar look but taller dots with little sipes cut across them for better grip. A gravel tire that still exists as the G-One Allround with a lot more sizes. A year later, that S-One officially became a gravel tire, reimagined as the G-One Speed, again only in a 30mm width. Now, the G-One Speed gets replaced by a similar-looking Pro One AllRoad with new construction inside that kicks performance up a notch, and shifts it back over to the road category where it really belonged all along. But, I didnt like the G-One SpeedAfter having ridden the 35 and then 45mm versions of the G-One Allround (and later the 45mm), which rolled quickly but still offered plenty of grip, I tried the G-One Speed on my road bike with high expectations back in around 2018-19. But I was sorely disappointed. The heavier gravel casing and narrower width meant that I had to increase pressure, making the ride feel stiff. And without the sipes, the harder narrower tire simply didnt offer anywhere near as much grip. Sure, Swiss Side declared a newer 35mm version the most aerodynamic gravel tire in 2022, and I even rode that wider size on a cargo bike for a little while. But I was already burned. So, what made me give the new Pro One AllRoad a fresh chance?Schwalbe kinda tricked me into it. They teased that a new all-road tire was coming, without telling me more than that it was Pro One supple, yet off-road ready with 30-40mm widths available. If I would have known it was a reboot of the G-One Speed, I probably would have passed. But they sent me a pair of 40mm tires, which measure 37.5-39mm on 22mm DT Swiss ERC wheels. And so, I mounted them and went out for a ride.I think now, I went in with low expectations. And I was very pleasantly surprised. The new casing is clearly more flexible than the last version I had tested. The larger volume meant I could run lower pressure for more grip and a lower rolling-resistance feel. And combined with Schwalbes latest Addix Race rubber compound, and theres a feeling of ample grip on cobbles, sold asphalt, gravel, and dirt roads.Of course, they arent magic. The ice & snow I encountered was still slippery, as was wet mud and grass. But it was worlds better than any slick road tire in slick conditions, while still not feeling sluggish on smooth pavement. And unlike most file tread tires, the constant height and spacing of the dots from shoulder to shoulder make for consistent, predictable grip no matter how far you lean over in the corners. All in all, it feels like much better positioning for Schwalbe to have moved this tire back into their road family, where it is a much more appropriate fit. But it is a tire that works well for road riders who cant resist taking the occasional dirt road detour!Tech details35mm40mmroad-inspired 3-layer Race Pro 67tpi casing constructionmanufactured with fair-trade natural rubber and recycled carbon black lower rolling-resistance at the same weight of the previous gravel version, thanks to optimizing the arrangement of the carcass layerswider V-guard puncture protection belt under the tread, plus reinforced sidewallsAddix Race rubber compound optimized for precise grip in wet conditions and race performanceTLR tubeless-ready & hookless compatibleE-25 ebike-rated30mm (340g), 35mm (425g) & 40mm (465g) claimed weight35mm 418-432g and 40mm 440-461g actual weightsSchwalbe Pro One AllRoad Pricing, options & availabilityThe new Schwalbe Pro One AllRoad tire comes in just one top-tier level, selling for 75 a piece. They offer it in 30mm, 35mm & 40mm sizes, and only in all black. That makes this the widest tire option available in the Schwalbe road tire family. Forbidden Bike Co. Introduces Titanium Hardtails for MTB & ATB Both with Flat Bars
Forbidden Bike Co. is known for producing MTBs and eMTBs with high-pivot suspension linkages, but the B.C. based brand has just broadened their horizons with two new titanium hardtails. The new Puritan rolls on 700c wheels and leans towards gravel/adventure riding, while the Heathen is a more traditional hardtail MTB.With Forbiddens roots in MTB, its not too surprising the Puritan is designed to run a flat handlebar. An interesting aspect of the Heathen is its slack head tube angle, despite its short travel fork. Forbidden says these bikes are Designed to be ridden hard and kept for a lifetime. These frames will be offered as a limited production run, so if youre tempted by them dont wait too long!Forbidden Bike Co. PuritanThe new Puritan is a titanium All-Terrain Bike built for adventure rides, gravel rides, singletrack trails, or as Forbidden states Whatever else you think you shouldnt be doing on a 700c bike. This bike was built to offer a balance of efficiency alongside ride comfort and stable handling. The Puritans geometry was crafted to accommodate front suspension. The frame kit comes with a 50mm travel RockShox Rudy XL fork and a Cane Creek headset. Max fork length is 460mm, and Forbidden recommends a 45mm offset. One key thing to note is the Puritan frame was built specifically to run a flat handlebar and a 60mm stem. Running a drop bar would lengthen the bikes front end and alter the geometry beyond what Forbidden intends. The Puritan frame can run up to 700x50c tires, and thats what Forbidden recommends for it. The frame includes a disc brake flat mount, and 160mm rotors are suggested. The bike sticks with easily serviceable, rattle-free external cable routing. As for fitments the Puritan features a 73mm threaded bottom bracket, and can run up to a 40t front chainrings. Out back is a 142x12mm rear axle, and UDH compatible dropouts. The Puritan accepts 27.2mm seatposts. With adventurous rides in mind, the Puritan offers accessory mounts for cargo bags on the top and down tubes, plus the frame provides adequate room for two 750ml water bottles or larger. The down tube features a three-bolt mount, offering placement options to help fit bottles and bags inside the front triangle. One nice finishing touch is the awesome head tube badge! In addition to the fork and headset, the Puritan frame kit is shown online with a seat clamp and rear axle. Ive reached out to Forbidden to confirm these parts are included with the frame kit watch this post for an update.Geometry:Forbiddens frames are built following the brands ONERIDE proportional sizing. As the above chart shows, frame sizes S1-S4 are available.MSRP for the Puritan frame kit is $4199 USD, $4599 CAD, 3299 or 3999 (including US tariffs and UK/Euro VAT).HeathenThe Heathen is a slack, aggressive hardtail MTB designed for XC trail rides or adventure rides through the backcountry.Given its 64 head tube angle you might suspect a longer fork would be ideal, but the Heathen is designed to run a 130mm fork. Forbidden says the shorter 130mm fork keeps the frame geometry more consistent under compression, so the bikes handling remains consistent and composed on rough terrain. A 44mm offset is recommended, and the Heathens maximum fork length tops out at 562mm.Smaller frame sizes (S1 and S2) are designed to run an MX wheel setup, while the larger S3 and S4 frames run 29 wheels. The wheel size split made it possible for Forbidden Bike Co. to maintain the front center to rear center ratio they desire, thus offering consistent ride qualities across the size range. Recommended tire width for either wheel size is 2.4 but all frames can run 2.5 max. The Heathens full length 31.6mm straight seat tube should accommodate any dropper post, and the frame features external cable routing designed to minimize rattling.Key fitments include a 73mm threaded bottom bracket with ISCG05 tabs for chain guides or bash guards, and ample room for up to 38t front chainrings. This bike runs a Boost 148x12mm rear axle, and has UDH compatible dropouts. The frame offers a 180mm disc brake post mount. For some backcountry versatility, the Heathen provides accessory mounts under the top tube, and enough room for one 750ml+ water bottle.Like the Puritan, the Heathen boasts an eye-catching head tube badge, and this off-road machine gets a chainstay guard to protect its lustrous titanium tubing. The Heathen frame is shown online with a seat clamp, brake adapter and rear axle installed. Ive reached out to Forbidden to confirm if these parts are all included with the frame kit, and will update this post ASAP.Geometry:The Heathens MSRP is $3399 USD, $3599 CAD, 2599 or 3199 (US tariffs and UK/Euro VAT included).*Images c. Forbidden Bike Co.The Puritan and Heathen are available now, so check out Forbidden Bike Co.s website for all the details. forbiddenbike.comThe post Forbidden Bike Co. Hey, Heres Another Airless Tire Will This One Catch On?
Every few years, the bike industry revisits the conversation of airless tires. Some are 3D printed, others are formed from a solid chunk of polymer. And some, well, are so high tech, they can go to the moon.Yet, aside from a booth at the occasional trade show, we rarely see airless tires out in the wild (except on a few hybrid bikes like the Specialized Alibi). Could Aipexs airless offering be the one that finally gains more widespread acceptance?Aipex Aireless TiresCurrently, Aipex isnt sharing much information about its airless tires. They are unreleased, and Aipex has an email sign-up to join a waitlist. From the pictures and video weve seen, which are a prototype, the tires have hexagonal cutouts in a 1-2-1 pattern. The tires also appear to have a road and dirt option. As for how they are constructed or what the material is, Aipex hasnt yet said. However, their airless motorcycle tires are manufactured by ND Rubber in Thailand. Aipex says this is the manufacturing giant producing over 3.5 million tires annually for trusted brands like Yamaha and Suzuki. Here is what Aipex tells us. The Aipex Airless Tires have tread that will last up to 6,000 miles. Once the tread is worn down, it can be replaced. They are obviously puncture-free and have a weight capacity of 200lbs.So, can we expect these to be the airless tires that catch on? Will we see them on any bikes soon? Well, not any bikes in my garage. At launch, these Aipex will only offer a 26 x 2.1 airless tire in the road or off-road tread. That said, Aipex also claims to have more sizes in the future. Hopefully, well also see a sneak peek into how to install the tires and replace tire tread.Who knows, maybe well get a set in for testing. But well need to get a bike with 26-inch wheels first.
