Atherton's first eMTB uses the most important motor on the market and it's cheaper than its competitors
Atherton Bikes has finally released its first eMTB, combining the DJI Avinox motor everyone is talking about with its S.170 enduro bike and the price is competitive. The S.170E uses the 120Nm, 1,000W DJI Avinox motor and a 'full size' battery, although the precise capacity is as-yet unspecified. Like the non-assisted S.170, the Atherton S.170E uses the same DW4 suspension and geometry, along with its mixed wheel-size setup and aluminum frame construction. Read more: The DJI Avinox is the best eMTB motor Ive ever used, but not because its so powerful What we know about the new electric-assisted Atherton The DJI Avinox motor is combined with a DW4 suspension system and aluminium frame. Atherton Bikes This is the first electric mountain bike created by Atherton Bikes, and details are scarce, but we expect the frame will be similar to the non-assisted S.170 enduro bike. The S.170, in turn, is based around the more expensive and boutique carbon and titanium-lugged AM.170, so expect similar geometry. The only numbers confirmed so far are a 64 head angle and 77 seat angle. The highest-spec version includes Fox Factory suspension and a SRAM X0 Eagle drivetrain. Atherton Bikes There are three build specifications available. For 6,999, you get 'Build 3', with RockShox Select suspension a Zeb fork and Vivid air shock, with SRAM Eagle 90 mechanical transmission. Build 2 costs 7,999 with RockShox Ultimate suspension and SRAM GX Eagle electronic shifting, which Atherton Bikes says, intriguingly, is integrated with the Avinox drive system. Build 1 costs 8,999 for a Fox Factory 38 fork and X2 shock, with SRAM X0 Eagle transmission and a carbon handlebar. The frame and geometry are based on the existing S.170 enduro bike. Atherton Bikes These competitive prices, in combination with a well-respected brand name and a proven suspension design, could make the first Atherton eMTB an attractive proposition. DJIs Avinox motor has quickly gained popularity thanks to its performance and monster power, even prompting some riders to question how much power is too much. This motor sets the benchmark for eMTB power and is one reason the new bike will be on many riders wishlists. Read more: Electric bike motors explained comparing Bosch, Shimano, Fazua, Yamaha, Specialized and ebikemotion systems Sizing and availability With 14 sizes on offer, it's possible to choose precisely the reach you want based on your height and preferences. Atherton Bikes With 14 sizes on offer, the S.170E is not custom, but it's certainly more tailored than other bikes in this price bracket. The S.170E will be available from April 2026 for UK and EU customers; the first 50 units will be available for a 1,000 deposit. Worldwide distribution is in the pipeline.

John Barnett Built More Than Bikes He Built the People Who Keep Them Rolling
Some people leave a mark on cycling not by winning races or launching products, but by shaping the hands and minds of the people who keep the entire industry moving. John Barnett was one of those people.John passed away on December 17 at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy that quietly touches thousands of bikes and just as many mechanics every single day. (Photo/Jordan Villella)Barnetts Path to CyclingBarnetts path into cycling was anything but conventional. Long before he became synonymous with professional mechanic education, he lived a life shaped by curiosity, movement, and work that was often physical and grounded. He bounced between schools, jobs, and places, spent time in bike shops, sold flowers on street corners, and even worked on wildfire duty. Cycling wasnt a career plan; it was something that naturally fit into a life built on hands-on problem-solving.When he settled in Colorado in the late 1970s and later took on the role of service manager at Criterium Bicycles in Colorado Springs, the industry itself was still figuring out what it was becoming. Mountain bikes were emerging, race support was evolving, and bike shops were learning how manage the rapidly changing equipment. Barnett was part of that first wave of builders and mechanics helping shape early mountain bikes. Along with Criterium Bicycles owner and founder Chris Caunt, the duo mirrored what was happening at the same time in places like Northern California. But Johns most enduring contribution didnt come from the service stand. It came from teaching.(A small piece of the curriculum of the BBI, how to set up drop bar brake levers. An example of how John Barnett differed in approach in teaching bicycle repair. Photo/Jordan Villella)Barnett Bicycle InstituteWhat started as small, off-season mechanic classes grew into the Barnett Bicycle Institute (BBI), a place that would train generations of professional and amateur mechanics. I myself went to BBI, learning from the man himself. It was the first time that I felt professional; the staff at BBI treated the job of bicycle mechanics with respect. BBI didnt glamorize the job. It treated bike mechanics as a craft, something worth learning properly, respecting deeply, and passing on responsibly. View this post on Instagram For many, BBI was the first place that made wrenching feel like a profession rather than just a job. Its manuals (I still have mine), courses, and philosophy became embedded in bike shops across the country. Rock stars of the industry, like the now-retired Calvin Jones of Park Tool fame, were among the schools advocates and students. Even now, long after the school itself has closed, its influence remains obvious in the way good shops operate, and good mechanics think. After selling BBI in 2016, John stepped away from the industry he helped shape and leaned fully into family and personal passions. As of 2019, BBI is now closed, having changed hands a few times since the initial sale, but the legacy live on.(My work apron, just as I left it on my last day, DOOM, Wrath Cobra pins, and the iconic BBI Logo. Photo/Jordan Villella)Lasting Legacy of Barnett & BBIMy time at BBI was inspirational and transformative. I met so many like-minded people who want to build careers in cycling. I rode new trails, I learned the value of a good torque wrench (and how one could not calibrate their arm as a torque wrench), and harnessed skills that I still use daily. A few pages from BBI Selling Service BBI didnt just teach you how to turn a wrench or about mechanical advantage; it helped you in every way to make shop labor work. The BBI Selling Service book puts the mechanic and great service ahead of bike sales, or at least on par with them. Showing how-tos and best practices for shops to turn repairs into profits and charge a fair wage for service. It laid out everything to the T, how long a repair should/could take, and how to move from the ever-popular Walking Bird tags to computer software to track sales and turnaround time. Up until my last days working in a bike shop, I wore my BBI apron, and today it hangs on my wall as a reminder of those times. Thanks, John Barnett, for everything. Ill pour out a bottle of Loctite (or fako-tite, as some BBI graduates might remember) and play some Grateful Dead in your honor.
