High Fives & Good Rides with Jamis Bikes New Redesigned Versatile Renegade V2 Gravel Bikes
Jamis Bikes redesigned the Renegade line this year and I was excited to see the latest, greatest version. While at Sea Otter this year, I made a point to stop by their booth the see them up close and personal. Since its inception back in 2014, the Jamis Renegade gravel bike has always been a versatile and utilitarian, do-everything kind of bike. A bike thats kinda right in my wheelhouse, quite frankly especially the steel versions. But in this article, we will be mostly focusing on the Jamis new carbon versions, Renegade C1, C2, C3, and C4. These are some really handsome bicycles, and along with the redesign comes the Renegades renowned versatility. The Renegade is built for gravel and off-road use but is versatile enough to throw a 30mm tire on it and commute or ride your weekend group ride.Renegade Tire ClearanceWith tire size and tire clearance being so important in the gravel community, Jamis saw to it that the redesigned Renegades could clear tires up to 50mm wide. The wider the tires the more traction you can achieve while off-road, shralping some single track. It also helps when youre bikepacking. And, the new Renegade is set up for light to mid-weight bikepacking trips. Perf! Flippin the Flip ChipIts true, just flip the chip on the fork and take the bike from a gravel and off-road machine to a versatile commuter or a comfortable, all-day weekend road machine. The Renegade runs a 71 head angle through the whole size run and with the flip chip up offers 50mm of offset. A 50mm offset helps increase stability and balance while riding off-road. Flip the chip down to achieve an increased offset of 55mm. 55mm is a great offset for riding all of the roads. Renegade Frame FeaturesThe new Renegade is equipped to run either a 1x or 2x drivetrain. There is a little front derailleur cover and a clean cable organizer to keep things all tidy. There are 21, yes 21 mount locations on the frame. For water bottles, storage, cargo cages, and a bento box. The frame is capable of running full-length fenders and a dropper post if thats your jam. It has a UDH derailleur hanger and 386 EVO bottom bracket. Renegade Geometry HighlightsRunning an overall relaxed geometry, the new Renegades are running lower bottom brackets by a smidgen. This is meant to help with stability and drop the center of gravity. With a lower bottom bracket, you may also find yourself feeling like youre in the bike, as opposed to on the bike. They set the seat tube at 72 and specd a straight post which, they say, sets you up perfectly to run a dropper post. Jamis stretched out the wheelbase some as well, adding to the overall stability and balance of the bike. They finished it all off with a longer top tube. The longer top tube positions your weight in the center of the back instead of aggressively over the front. GeometryThe Renegade comes in six sizes, 48, 51, 54, 56, 59, and 61.Renegades 5 Builds and RetailJamis Renegade V2 C1 (Photos/Ron Frazelle)Renegade C1Retail: $8999 (Frameset: $1799)SRAM RED XPLR eTap AXS 12-speed group with power meterZIPP XPLR 101 Carbon Tubeless wheelset, i27WTB RADDLER Tubeless, 700 x 44c, Dual DNA Compound, Aramid beadRenegade C2Retail: $4999SRAM RIVAL XPLR eTap AXS 12-speed groupBOYD Jocassee Carbon Tubeless wheelset, i26WTB RADDLER Tubeless, 700 x 44c, Dual DNA Compound, Aramid beadRenegade C3Retail: $3999Shimano GRX 800 12-speed groupBOYD Jocassee Carbon Tubeless wheelset, i26WTB RADDLER Tubeless, 700 x 44c, Dual DNA Compound, Aramid beadRenegade C4Retail: $2399SRAM APEX XPLR eTap AXS 12-speed groupBOYD CCC Alloy Tubeless wheelset, i25WTB RADDLER Tubeless, 700 x 44c, Dual DNA Compound, Aramid beadRenegade S2Retail: $2399 (Frameset: $1099)Shimano GRX 800/600 11-speed groupBOYD GVL Alloy Tubeless wheelset, i25WTB RADDLER Tubeless, 700 x 40c, Dual DNA Compound, Aramid beadThe name of the Jamis Renegade has always been versatility. The 8 best moments from the spring Classics 2024
CyclistThe 8 best moments from the spring Classics 2024The 2024 cycling spring Classics season is over so its time to look back at the best bits before Grand Tour season really kicks off at the womens Vuelta and mens Giro. This year has bestowed some incredible racing upon us, from brutal attacks over punishing cobblestones to unfathomable breakaways, maiden wins and record-equalling victories. Its hard to narrow it down, but these are what weve deemed the eight best moments from the last few months of one-day racing. Related Posts Who are the favourites for the Vuelta Femenina 2024? Pfeiffer Georgis Paris-Roubaix podium reactionThe delight witnessed around the world.23-year-old Pfeiffer Georgi arrived at the Roubaix velodrome in a strong leading group of pre-race favourites including the likes of Lotte Kopecky and Marianne Vos, all vying for cobblestone glory. She was so focussed on her final sprint that she didnt realise shed pipped Vos to third place on the line, and it made for some spectacular viewing when she found out. Beautiful moments like these are what makes cycling great.Read more: Id love to win a Classic in the spring: Pfeiffer Georgi profile2. Kasia Niewiadoma ends almost five-year road victory drought Luc Claessen/Getty ImagesStraight from one emotional moment into another. Kasia Niewiadoma had to wait almost five years for a win on the road despite hopping on plenty of podiums in the meantime, including a recent second place at the Tour of Flanders. She won the Gravel World Championships at her first gravel race last year, but when lining up at La Flche Wallonne, there was a chasm of 1,770 days since her last individual win at the Womens Tour in 2019.The finale of La Flche Wallonne inevitably came on the brutal Mur de Huy. One last leg-sapping effort needed. Niewiadoma broke clear on the steep slopes and held on for a long-awaited moment of raising her hands in celebration.I hope this race will inspire many people to keep believing and pursuing their dreams, she said afterwards. Ive had so many second, third and fifth places. Deep inside, I knew this was my day. After five years of not winning a road race, I will enjoy this moment with my team and teammates. I enjoy this process and the path that Ive had to get there. Winning is special. I believe in personal development. If I can make progress in myself, help my teammates, stay patient and keep the faith high, then Im okay with this path.Yesterday, my partners grandmother passed away, and we said I ride for her. I have her engagement ring, and I thought of her as soon as I crossed the line. This victory is an even more special moment.Winning isnt everything and the journey to victory can teach you a lot more than achieving your end goals. Niewiadoma is an inspiration.3. Marianne Vos hits 250 wins and keeps goingIts a blessing to be around to watch the historic career of Marianne Vos, one that has spanned across road, cyclocross and gravel, with rainbow jerseys, Classics victories and an Olympic gold medal among the highlights of her enormous palmars.Given her prowess, its surprising that shes still finding any races to win for the very first time, but thats exactly what happened at this years Dwars door Vlaanderen. She held off Shirin van Anrooij (Lidl-Trek) in a sprint finish for her second victory of the season, notching up her total to a whopping 250. Vos said, Its a number you dont dare to think about at the beginning of your career. Over the years you can make a lot of memories of different highs and lows. This is definitely a very nice highlight. She hasnt stopped there. Her 251st win arrived soon after at the Amstel Gold Race, and with her current contract running until the end of 2025, theres no telling how many more races shell win.4. Mathieu van der Poels ferocious attacks and historic Flanders tripleDario Belingheri/Getty ImagesThe king of spring. Mathieu van der Poel has been on fire on the road this year after a dominant winter in cyclocross. He set the bar at the E3 Saxo Bank Classic but had to settle for second place at Gent-Wevelgem behind Mads Pedersen, only to bounce back a ridiculous statement, yet such has been his consistency in delivering wins with another enormous solo breakaway just a few days later at the Tour of Flanders. His 45km attack launched on the Koppenberg was one no one could follow. He unclipped after the finish line and held his bike aloft. With this achievement, Van der Poel had won a record-equalling third Tour of Flanders title, writing his name alongside Johan Museeuw, Tom Boonen and Fabian Cancellara. He repeated his dominance on the unpredictable cobblestones of Paris-Roubaix, where he broke away with 60km to go until the fanfare of the Roubaix Velodrome, dodging a fans stray cap in the process. It was a particularly impressive race for his Alpecin-Deceuninck team with Jasper Philipsen winning the sprint for second, meaning they successfully replicated their 2023 1-2 finish. It was only unfortunate that we couldnt have another Van der Poel vs Wout van Aert battle in the spring Classics, as the Belgian broke his collarbone and several ribs in a crash at Dwars door Vlaanderen. Hopefully that makes Van Aert even more determined next season.5. Tadej Pogaars 81km solo breakawayTim de Waele/Getty ImagesSo much goes into the art of a successful breakaway, especially in the Classics. If youre Tadej Pogaar, you simply go alone from an outlandish distance and ride to glory.Long solo breaks were the story of this years mens Classics, but its Pogaars 81km raid at Strade Bianche that was the longest. Eighty-one kilometres. Alone. The audacity. 6. Hugs all round at Milan-San RemoSara Cavallini/Getty ImagesIts lovely seeing rivals being friendly off the bike, and thats exactly what happened after Jasper Philipsen beat Tadej Pogaar and Michael Matthews at Milan-San Remo. The trio were all hugging immediately after Philipsens victory: Philipsen jumped on Pogaar in celebration, Pogaar took photos with Matthews and his child, Pogaar air-kissed Philipsen on the podium. With Lance Armstrongs recent comment declaring his hatred of rivals hugging it out, we love to see this.7. Elisa Lamborghini Dario Belingheri/Getty ImagesElisa Longo Borghini is a real fighter, always such an enjoyable rider to watch and a part of a Lidl-Trek squad that has been providing some of cyclings most entertaining racing for a number of years now.At the Tour of Flanders, the Italian national champion won the sprint against Niewiadoma, with teammate Van Anrooij celebrating behind. It came nine years after Longo Borghinis first win in the race and her consistency at the highest level is remarkable. She didnt stop there. After skipping Paris-Roubaix, she broke away from Demi Vollering with 8km left of Brabantse Pijl and rode on to her 43rd career victory. Her focus on the Ardennes may not have resulted in a win for those three particular races, but it means she should have strong climbing legs for La Vuelta Femenina next. What a talent.8. Keep an eye on Maxim van Gils and Laurence PithieTim de Waele/Getty ImagesTalk about consistency. Maxim van Gils (Lotto-Dstny) and Laurence Pithie (Groupama-FDJ) have been two standout riders throughout the spring Classics.Earlier in the year, 24-year-old Van Gils had a successful Vuelta a Andaluca, where he won the third stage, the general classification, points jersey and combination classification. He carried that form into the Classics at Strade Bianche, where he finished third ahead of Tom Pidcock and Matej Mohori. At Milan-San Remo, he rode in the group of contenders and finished in a career-best seventh.Van Gils podiumed once more at Flche Wallonne, taking third place on a particularly harsh day when weather conditions only saw 44 riders finish. Just a few days later at Lige-Bastogne-Lige he was narrowly beaten by Van der Poel to the final spot on the podium. Keeping up with Van der Poel especially during his rampage this year should be medal-worthy in itself. At Gent-Wevelgem, Laurence Pithie managed to stay with the World Champion and Mads Pedersen at the head of the race all the way until the last ascent of the Kemmelberg. It was his performance at Paris-Roubaix though that really showed his strength. Hampered by a hard crash with 30km to go, he battled on to finish seventh on debut at the race at just 21 years of age.Two true stars in the making. The last few weeks have seen something of a renaissance in the career of Romain Bardet. HED Vanquish Aero Road Wheels get Wider & Faster
Its been a minute since weve heard from them, but the new HED Vanquish aero road wheel line brings updated profiles designed around wider tires. They also have lighter-yet-stronger layups, new depths, and they look better than ever, too.Top level, there are two versions Vanquish, and Vanquish Pro. All depths are updated, and theyve replaced hte 40mm with a deeper 45mm option. The entire construction is new, too, from carbon fiber material and supplier selection to layup and rim profiles. And theyre all still hooked, because they believe thats the safest option.Updated aero profilesThe new shapes are all within their patented profiles, but get minor updates that arent immediately obvious. Anne Hed told me the goal was to create a better handling wheel with improved crosswind stability without diminishing the overall aerodynamics that the Vanquish line was known for. And they needed to make it faster with modern, wider tires. To do that they reshaped the rims, with a blunter shape near the spokes. Interior width increased from 21mm to 22.4mm, with a corresponding growth on the outer width, too. The goal of all these changes was to improve aerodynamics with wider 28mm tires. It worked, and not just in CFD. HED took them to the wind tunnel to prove it:The result is a near-zero difference in drag between 25mm (above) to 28mm (below) tires. In the real world, the larger volume 28mm tires add compliance and traction while reducing rolling resistance, so the net gain is that youre faster with 28mm tires. The rims come out of the mold looking good, too, theres no paint or filler on the exterior. What you see on the outside of the rim is aesthetically pleasing, but its a functional layer. You can see how they do it in our Factory Tour post, but they say theyve refined their process even more since then and the wheels look better than ever.2024 HED Vanquish Pricing & OptionsThe standard Vanquish wheels come in 45mm and 62mm depths with 4-pawl hubs & 27-tooth ratchets for 13 engagement. Theyre built with Sapim CX Sprint bladed spokes and retail for $1,750 per set. Claimed weights are 1653g and 1710g.The Vanquish Pro series is lighter (and lighter than the prior versions), with a higher-modulus, lighter carbon. They rims are made in the same mold, but built with higher-end hubs with 5 pawls x 45 teeth (8 engagement) and Sapim CX Ray bladed spokes. The Vanquish Pro gets more options -45mm, 62mm, 84mm, and a full disc (shown at top of post)- and the naming now exactly matches the rim depth. MSRP $2,250/set.Anne said the prior Vanquish rims were already strong, passing 3x the required UCI test limits, but these new ones are stronger. All wheels go through a six-point test for impacts, lateral stress, load stress, drops, environmental stress, and more. And its all done in-house at their factory in Minneapolis, all surviving well past the required minimum testing standards.HEDcycling.comThe post HED Vanquish Aero Road Wheels get Wider & Faster appeared first on Bikerumor.
