Polygon Teases Lightweight eMTB with Cut-Out Top Tube
Polygons current full-power Siskiu eMTB trail bikes use Shimanos EP-series drive units with a large 504Wh and 630Wh batteries and a simpler four-bar, Horst Link suspension design. That layout is a departure from their IFS 6-bar linkage system on the longer travel Collosus enduro bikes (both electric and analog), and this new Siskiu TLE-R adds another design to the mix.It has a unified rear triangle rotating on two different lower links to control its motion. It looks solid, and like the IFS it should give them good control over anti-squat and anti-rise for smooth pedaling without compromising suspension performance.A third upper link drives the shock forward, inline with the top tube. With three links, Im thinking it should have minimal lateral load on the shock, helping it last longer and run smoother. It has 150mm rear wheel travel paired with a 150mm Fox 36 Performance Elite fork. The top tube has a cutout, which may help you set sag on your own, but also likely gives the air can a little room to move up and down as the rear swingarm articulates upward. Creating space for that with a cutout lets them get the top tube as low as possible for increased standover clearance and a low center of gravity, too.Target weight is in the low forties (pounds), and it goes on sale in August 2024. Pricing TBA. Weve inquired about the motor and output and will report back. In the meantime, heres something shiny to distract you:This bright blue anodized Collosus DH9 had a deep glimmer that caught the sun just right and made it look ultra blue. Note the fade from a darker blue at the bottom, and a few speckles throughout made this one of the best finishes I saw at Sea Otter. As usual, a camera doesnt do such things justice, but you might be able to get one of your own through BikesOnline for North America.PolygonBikes.com and BikesOnline.comThe post Polygon Teases Lightweight eMTB with Cut-Out Top Tube appeared first on Bikerumor.

Cyclist Revisited: If cycling did an American-style draft, what would happen?
CyclistCyclist Revisited: If cycling did an American-style draft, what would happen? In 2021, when I was just a few months into my time at Cyclist I wrote an article mocking up what might happen if the mens WorldTour did an American-style draft to sign young talent. Now, I wasnt exactly a scout so I cheated slightly and took a pool of the youngest riders already in the WorldTour, but lets just equate that to college players already being well-known and forgive me in the name of #content.Three years on, on the night of the NFL Draft which hopefully will mean I wake up to pictures of Drake Maye in New York Giants blue and now with the keys to this here website, I thought it might be fun to revisit my selections and see how its shaping up. The best players in that years NFL draft are starting to get their first big contract extensions, so the timeline should be a good indicator of who is actually good. Though of course there should be plenty of time in cycling for a few late bloomers.Have a skim, let me know how I did in the comments or on social media. Pre-warning, yes I missed Carlos Rodrguez, I think about that every day, but remember Tom Brady didnt get picked until the 199th pick. David Lappartient steps up to the podium and begins, With the first pick of the 2021 UCI WorldTour draft, Israel Start-Up Nation selectIts absolutely bonkers, but thats American sports and given last night was the first round of the NFL Draft, we thought it would be fun to imagine what it might look like if mens cycling had a draft. For the purpose of the exercise, lets just forget everything thats plausible or realistic yes, if this actually happened an actual Tour de France winner wouldnt be involved. To have some semblance of realism, we used the UCIs team rankings from the end of the 2020 season in reverse order for parity and a list of the 100 youngest WorldTour ridersand off we go.1. Israel Start-Up Nation Tadej PogaarDario Belingheri via GettyMuch toCyclistdigital editor Joe Robinsons disgust (big Remco guy), Pogaar is the only selection here. He already has a Tour de France and a Monument under his belt and looks almost unbeatable every time he gets on the bike.A sensation with the potential to win any race on the calendar.2. Qhubeka-Assos Remco EvenepoelLaurie Dieffembacq/Getty ImagesThe fact that young Remco hasnt yet been fully unleashed onto the WorldTour is a travesty, were praying that his recovery has gone well enough that he can compete at the Giro dItalia. Not only does he think hes the GOAT but Joe is adamant he would be picked first in any draft.3. Intermarch-Wanty-Gobert Matriaux Tom PidcockHis potential was no secret before the season began, but the longer it goes on the more Pidcock cements himself as GB cyclings next hero. A win and a half in the Classics only scratches the surface of what he can do, lets see how he goes at the Vuelta a Espana.Hed rock Intermarchs fluorescent kit too.4. Cofidis Marc HirschiHirschis stock is plummeting as the days go by, if this had been done in January then he couldve been higher. Bora could strengthen both their Classics and stage racing squads.15. Team DSM Max KanterSprinters are the running backs of cycling, a necessity for the top teams but not necessarily valued as highly as your GC contenders, therefore they only start to pop up at the end of the first round. Plus hes called Max Kanter and hes a sprinter!16. Ineos Grenadiers Jake StewartA huge British talent, Ineos would need mere seconds to make this call. Stewart announced himself in a big way bagging second at Omloop Het Nieuwsblad, and that was only the beginning.17. UAE Team Emirates Quinn SimmonsControversial? Yes. Talented? Yes.18. Deceuninck-QuickStep Mikkel BjergBjergs engine would get Lefevere another win or two. Despite not being Belgain, several U23 World titles in the TT more than show his talent. In real life they would trade all their picks for the next three years to move up and bag Remco though, its the only way.19. Jumbo-Visma Matteo JorgensonLets give the Killer Bees another rider with big GC potential to close out the first round. The high mountains would be like that episode of Black Mirror, Pogaar swarmed by yellow and black. Roglic, Van Aert, Kuss, Bennett, Vingegaard, Gesink, Kruijswijk, Jorgenson. Should you sit or stand when climbing on a bike?
CyclistShould you sit or stand when climbing on a bike?At the 2014 Vuelta a Espana, two exceptional climbers went head-to-head on some of Spains most feared mountains. Time and again, Alberto Contador and Chris Froome slugged it out on the ascents, often equally matched, but rarely demonstrating the same technique.Contador, the eventual winner of that years race, tended to prefer an out-of-the-saddle style of climbing (dancing on the pedals as Phil Liggett would put it), while Team Skys Froome would usually stay seated and spin a fast cadence. Both techniques were effective, but which should we emulate? Its all about the steepness and length of the climb, says former BMC Racing rider Marco Pinotti. The shallower the climb, the faster you go, so you dont need to stand. Its also more aerodynamic when you sit.If its steep, you can enjoy a brief advantage by standing.Hard Knott fell (but we didnt)Andrew Grant / CyclistAs a six-time Italian National champion, Pinottis been there and burnt the quads, but does that broad anecdotal brush reflect textbook physics? Were sure that through beads of sweat and with an aorta thats at bursting point, youve pondered the mechanical work that you and your strained limbs are undertaking. If you havent, heres a reminder of the power required to tame Alpe dHuez:W = krMs + kaAsv2 + giMsWere all familiar with this of course, but just as a recap, W is power, kr is rolling resistance, M is the combined mass of cyclist and bicycle, s is speed on the road, ka is air resistance, A is the combined frontal area of cyclist and bicycle, v is speed through the air (including headwind), g is gravitational acceleration and i is incline. Its a convoluted way of saying that lighter riders with a high power-to-weight ratio tend to excel in the mountains. But does the technique of smaller riders such as Joaquim Rodrguez all of 5ft 7in and 59kg reflect scientific theory? Related Posts Aero vs. lightweight bike: Which is better for climbing? How to get stronger legs for cycling Cadence: High or low, which is better? How far do you need to ride to lose 1kg of fat? Climbing balancing actCharlotte Head / CyclistIn 2008, Professor Ernst Hansen discovered that road cyclists were better off remaining seated until the gradient hit 10%.From then on standing became more effective in terms of sustained power output, although the riders consumed 5% more oxygen when standing.During short (less than 30 seconds) all-out bursts, peak power output has been measured at 25% greater when standing compared to sitting, but there is trade off.Research has shown that even at shallower gradients of around 4%, ascending at 19kmh while seated requires 10% less oxygen than when standing.Thats primarily because the bodys centre of mass is supported by the saddle, conserving energy. Science and real life arent always happy bedfellows, but it seems Hansens Lycra-clad lab rats reflect the peloton. In general, Ill only stand up on steep sections around 10% plus, says Tejvan Pettinger, winner of the 2013 British Hill Climbing Championships, though standing up is more tiring so usually this is left to below 60-second bouts.Alex Duffill / CyclistThose brief out-of-saddle bursts are common across all levels of cycling, whether for varying the effort or accelerating away from a rival, though some riders stay standing long enough to raise eyebrows. At the 2013 Vuelta, American Chris Horner became the oldest winner of a Grand Tour. His 41 years dominated the headlines, but cycling aficionados were more interested in his climbing style.Ive never seen a rider spend so long out of the saddle, climbing in a big gear, says Professor Louis Passfield, who has worked with British Cycling as lead sports scientist. But clearly it worked.Standing has the potential to elicit greater power output due to differences in the kinetic chain, starting with the upper body. When standing, the rider can produce greater leverage from the handlebars, says Daniel Healey, who was formerly the head of sports science at BMC, and the wider the better to increase this lever.Horner at the Vuelta in 2013 had super-wide bars.Horners 44cm-46cm handlebars were purportedly down to a mechanic fitting the wrong ones several seasons back, and he stuck with them.Playing the anglesJuan Trujillo Andrades / CyclistStanding up also alters many of your bodys angles with a key one being at the hip, adds Passfield.By opening this up, you activate more muscles, including the glutes and more of the calves, which gives you more power potential. When seated, that closed hip angle can restrict power output. The range of hip motion from seated to standing rises from around 40 to 70. This range increases at the knees, too, from around 30 to 75. Finally, the range of ankle movement increases from a seated 25 to standing 40.These angles are close to what you get when running, says Passfield, which certainly pays off in the propulsive [down] phase.More power is possible when standing, then, but theres an energy cost. This sounds obvious but its down to efficiency, says Passfield. It comes down to factors like producing more power for less energy, how much heat you emit and so on.In the past people thought efficiency couldnt be trained but James Hopker and myself showed that it could. With regard to climbing, this efficiency is targeted, so if you train on climbs in the saddle most the time, thats where youll see the benefits; vice versa when standing.Passfield suspects your preferred climbing style arises from your experience from the moment you seriously ride a bike, which raises the question of the effect of nationality.Alex Duffill / CyclistDoes Colombias climbing culture, for instance, mean that the likes of Nairo Quintana and Rigoberto Uran tend to ride out of the saddle more than, say, Waless Geraint Thomas and Luke Rowe?I dont think so, says Pinotti. If there is acorrelation, its because that country might, in general, produce certain body types. The bigger you are, the more energy you waste, so standing is uneconomical. If youre light like Nairo Quintana [58kg], that doesnt apply as much. For the record, Contador weighed 62kg and Froome 69kg, which might be a factor in why the heavier of the two prefers to sit.Theres also the matter of cadence. Numerous studies have shown that 80 to 90rpm is optimum on the flat; slightly less on the hills.Research on the 2008 Tour de France showed that the average cadence on the 17.5km long and 1,208m high Galibier came in at 67rpm, while the 10.3km and 8.3% Saint-Lary-Soulan registered a lower 64rpm.As Pinotti says, Your cadence cant sink too low on the mountains or youll lose momentum and fall off.Its certainly not a problem high-revving Froome seems to encounter.Lightweights may dance on their pedals, derrires of heavyweights might remain planted to their saddles, but one thing unites all climbing hurts a lot regardless. This article first appeared on Cyclist.co.uk in May 2015 Related Posts Aero vs. lightweight bike: Which is better for climbing? SR Suntour Durolux 38 Spreads Out w/ New Chassis & Damper
The SR Suntour Durolux 38 moves their burliest single-crown fork squarely into the realm of enduro and all-mountain. A bigger chassis and wider stance give it a commanding presence, plus new EVO rear shocks and updates to their Auron and GVX forks round out the updates for 2025. Theres also an all-new damper at the top end of their fork range.2025 SR Suntour Durolux 38The Durolux upgraded to 38mm stanchions in 2021, so the big change here is its overall width. The Leg Center distance increases from 145mm to 151mm distance, which means they basically spaced the stanchions 6mm further apart. This made room for larger lowers giving it a wider stance, beefier body, and a hair more tire clearance.Dropouts come in flush to accommodate that growth, maintaining standard 110mm Boost spacing. It gets a new RC+ damper thats been in development for four years and simplifies the external controls to low-speed only for both compression and rebound. At one point, SR Suntours top damper was the R2C2, which provided external control of both high- and low-speed compression and rebound. Then they simplified by eliminating the high-speed rebound, and now theyre simplified it even more. Why? They say most riders would set the high-speed compression to almost the same spot, regardless of rider weight or riding style. And once they set it, they rarely changed it. So why bother with the complexity of making it adjustable? Its still internally adjustable via the shim stack for riders who really need something different. But wait, theres moreThe 2025 Durolux is their first fork with splash lube in the lowers. The damper cartridge has a bleed port at the top to expel any extra that it might ingest. A new machining process dramatically improves the tolerances and alignment between upper and lower bushings. They say this reduces friction so much that the stanchions will just slide down on their own when inserted into the lowers (before adding the damper and air spring, of course). The SKF seals carry over, but they add lubrication ports that use a disc brake bleed kit fitting to attach. It can be had as a Durolux 38 X model with integrated ABS mounts and a solid crown version for heavier e-bikes. Otherwise, you get a lighter hollow crown and no ABS mounts. Available in 160/170/180mm travel, weight TBA.2025 Auron 36The SR Suntour Auron bumps up to 36mm stanchions. Thats a bump from 35mm, which was up from 34, so its gone from downcountry to proper all-mountain fork and comes in 150-160mm travel versions. It also gets the new RC+ damper.Edge EVO inline shockThe new Edge EVO inline shock is their new top of the line XC/Trail/AM shock. It has a larger positive air chamber that makes it more tunable with spacers. Internally, a chrome steel inner shaft and increased bushing overlap makes it to resist lateral forces imposed by suspension yokes and links. It comes in two air can volume options (shown), with three damping cartridge controls:R external rebound only2CR external rebound plus open/closed compression3CR external rebound plus open/pedal/closed compressionGVX gravel suspension forkNot new or updated is the SR SUntour GVX gravel suspension fork. But they wanted to point out that it has the largest negative chamber volume by percentage of anything theyve made. That lets you run higher pressure so it has good support, but is still really compliant on the little stuff. Ive ridden it and it is indeed a rather good gravel fork.SRSuntour.comThe post SR Suntour Durolux 38 Spreads Out w/ New Chassis & Damper appeared first on Bikerumor.
