Add in the boosted capabilities that came with the slightly longer travel ebike version Neuron:ON that debuted three months later with a 4th-gen Bosch CX motor & 750Wh battery. Now, dial it back to the latest lighter-weight but powerful Bosch Performance Line SX motor and a 400Wh battery, and the new Canyon Neuron:ONfly.Canyon calls it: Less weight. More power.The Neuron:ONfly sits in the middle of the Neuron family with the full-power Neuron:ON as the go-to choice for all-day adventures in the alpine, while the Neuron is a 100% human-powered bike for those who want to keep it traditional.What changes from Neuron:ON to the new Neuron:ONfly?You still get 55Nm or torque out of the latest Bosch SX motor compared to 85Nm out of the CX. But you get the benefit of a more natural feeling pedal assist, while still getting a high 600W peak power output for punchy climbs. And the SX motor itself is 750g lighter than CX. Plus, its 400Wh battery is a claimed 2400g lighter than the CXs 750Wh battery. Thats more than 3kg lighter, or nearly 14% weight savings over the complete Neuron:ON CF 8 that I rode last summer. Beyond the powertrain, the carbon frame itself isnt identical to the heavier Neuron:ON, but its very similar. Obviously, the downtube could be made smaller with the smaller, lighter 400WH internal battery. And the chainstays have dropped a bit with the extra space available around the smaller motor casing.But what about lightweight range?Sure, range is genuinely decreased from that huge 750Wh battery to this 400Wh one. But the Bosch SX motor is said to be more energy efficient. And the more natural ride feel offers welcome support on the climbs, but encourages you to step up your pedal power output, as well. It also is much more reasonable to pedal a light eMTB in Eco mode. And still bearable to pedal it uphill with a drained battery, compared to the full-power ebikes out there.Range-wise, Canyon claims the new Neuron:ONfly will still give you support for 1000m of climbing in Turbo mode. Thats plenty to cover most regular mountain bike trail rides. And why carry extra battery weight around if you arent going to use it. I live and ride in the mountains. And 1000m is a solid ride ranging from 25-60km in length depending on how hard you want to push the steep hills. And if you do actually need extra power occasionally for some longer riding. The SX-powered Canyon Neuron:ONfly is compatible with Boschs 250Wh PowerMore range extender bottle battery. So you can get 62.5% longer range, just by attaching the 1.6kg extra battery.All-Trail GeometryHandling-wise, another year means even more progressive geometry than the recent Neuron:ON. This new lighter Canyon Neuron:ONfly slackens out a further degree to a 64.5 head angle now, paired with the same steep 76.5 seat tube angle and same Stack & Reach figures.That should match well with the 140mm of Canyon Triple Phase 4-bar rear suspension and matching 140mm forks. Inevitable winners, interminable broadcasts and attritional storylines have made this the toughest season in recent memory to justify your pro cycling fan status. Bluntly, we are in the cycling fan ice age.In the doldrums, mens cycling is crying out for some serious competition, action and drama. We are already four months into the programme for this year and the light at the end of the tunnel is looking dim. With Tadej Pogaar destined for Giro glory and Tour de France competitors in hospital beds, theres little reason to hang up the yellow bunting this summer.While womens cycling has served up a veritable buffet of surprises, the mens calendar is looking a whole lot less fruitful. Whether its one-day races, stage races or Grand Tours, we are stuck with a measly offering of domination, sterilisation and exhaustion from the new post-pandemic cycling paradigm. In lieu, we bore witness to a dirge of one-man shows.Apart from the last one percent of Milan-San Remo, the Monuments this year have been a snoozefest. Watching Paris-Roubaix felt like a chore and the Tour of Flanders lost its spark. I learnt my lesson by the time we reached the Ardennes. Once Pogaar was away on La Redoute, I switched off and got back to cleaning my apartment and doing the laundry.When either Pogaar or Mathieu van der Poel took to the startline, the end result looked inevitable. These guys are in their mid-to-late twenties now, so theres every likelihood their domination could continue for seasons to come. Maybe Wout van Aert could have saved the day, but as Jos Mourinho once said, If I speak, I am in big trouble.The Giro dInevitabilityA.S.O./Gatan FlammeThe Giro dItalia is normally the iced tea of the cycling calendar. We get eased into Grand Tour sweetness with an intriguing battle between those who are too cool to go to the Tour.In a start list notably lacking in big names this year, Italys Grand Tour seems to have the cycling community puffing out a collective sigh in 2024. A race thats usually a refreshing contrast to the Tour de France looks instead like it will be a test of patience and resilience for the viewer. Be prepared for Pogaar to dart away in the Dolomites and sew up the maglia rosa as early as possible in order to ease his Tour de France preparations.Even in the days of Chris Froome and the Texan we dont talk about anymore, the Giro dItalia offered a chance for some real Grand Tour action free of the sterilised affairs in a Tour de France sanitised by dominant figures and superteams alike.In 2024, we dont even have the prospect of an open battle for pink. Instead, the most exciting part of the Giro is likely to be predicting the second-place finisher behind Pogaar. And whoever it is will inevitably be forgotten about in the future matrix of cycling feats.The prospect of spending three weeks witnessing greatness doesnt do much to motivate the viewer to tune into the Corsa Rosa. Why tune in when you know the winner? Is there really any point?What about the Tour de France?Tim de Waele/Getty ImagesWhile the Giro is set to be a walkover for Pogaar, and a pity party for all behind, the Tour de France doesnt look much rosier either.Remco Evenepoel, Primo Rogli and Jonas Vingegaard are all recovering from injury following the barbaric fourth stage of the Tour of the Basque Country. The chances of seeing Vingegaard even race at all this year now look fleeting given the severity of the crashes he suffered on the Basque roads.With Pogaars odds narrowing by the minute, the Tour de France looks set to return to Pogaar world order. Evenepoel is already considering his 2025 plans, while Rogli is fading into the back of our minds following a disappointing start to his tenure at Bora-Hansgrohe.The promised Tour to end all Tours looks like it has been spoiled by cyclings cruel wheel of fortune. A stunted battle looks imminent, with only the Olympic Games motivating us through this three-week whitewash around France.No more saving gracesTim de Waele/Getty ImagesNormally, we can at least rely on the one-week stage races to dish up a healthy serving of unpredictability. In 2024 form, however, our plate is looking nutrient deficient.If youre struggling to guess who will win the major UCI WorldTour stage races, just choose one of the big riders namely Pogaar, Vingegaard, Evenepoel or Rogli. If its not one of them bringing home the bacon, be sure to namedrop of their luxury domestique-turned-leader types (were looking at you, Matteo Jorgenson and Juan Ayuso).We now live in an era where winning week-long stage races by over a minute has become normalised. This was not the case ten years ago, heck, even five years ago. The old anarchical world of the week-long stage race is lost in the postmodern cycling landscape we find ourselves in.Perhaps we can rely on the Vuelta. The Spanish three-week-long crusade usually fosters a wild-west battle for supremacy. However, in the past three years, this sparkle has been lost. Quite frankly, its the Grand Tour racers afterthought. Maybe the Vuelta will become a rehab race for the walking wounded once again, but the script seems up in the air and unappetising.Fleeting gold medal hopesDario Belingheri/Getty ImagesIts not all doom and gloom. The Olympic Games are returning this summer. A city-centre circuit around Paris will have an unfamiliar look compared to what were used to seeing on the final day of the Tour. Say farewell to the Champs-Elyses and hello to the cobble climb of Montmartre.Cobble climb, you say? Expect to see Van der Poel targeting this with laser-like precision. And he rarely misses when hes locked on target. Alongside a devilish Dutch team, its hard to imagine any scenario where someone else wins.The World Championships in Zrich will try to brand itself as one last hurrah for the 2024 season before we finally put it to bed. However, the Worlds are looking like they could be another scene of a Pogaar crime against our collective humanity. Expect a similar narrative to LigeBastogneLige. Some commentators have already claimed Pogi the gold medallist elect, five months before the racing starts in Switzerland.Get out the violinsDavid Ramos/Getty ImagesWe are on a sinking cycling Titanic. The band is playing as we get sucked into the icy North Atlantic of the 2024 UCI WorldTour calendar.There are few life jackets to save us here, we just have to accept the 2024 season for what it is. Maybe well look back on it and admire all these stout-hearted race wins. Thatll take some time, thats for sure.For now, lets pile into the lifeboats and prepare for the worst. If not shock, disbelief. It seems unreal. Last October I reported how the Road Safety Authority Road Safety Authority are looking into locked and welded shut pedestrian gates to its HQ and a missing section of footpath between the Ballina town centre and its location in Moy Valley Business Park.Were not talking about a remote location. The Road Safety Authority HQ in Ballina is just across the tracks from the train station and 1km from the town centre. Its located in a business park that also hosts a cafe and a number of other businessesIt also hosts a heavy goods vehicle truck yard that serves the Coca-Cola factory in the town. So, its not just cars or vans going in and out.IMAGE: The locked and welded gates flank the vehicular gates with the RSA HQ pictured to the right.IrishCycle.com is also located in Ballina, and I only noticed the gates closed around Covid when visiting the business park. At first, I thought it was maybe some weird reaction to Covid or that it was closed when the offices were. However, the gates and footpath have been the same since maybe when the RSA moved into the business park. Google Street View shows the gates locked in 2009. For myself, to try to combat the effects of Covid and then working from home for a few years, I started walking further for exercise last year. I already knew the design of my hometown was far less accessible and safety-focused than it should be, but walking in different parts of the town and in different ways than what Im used to highlighted the issues.Last year, as I was going past the RSAs headquarters, I wondered if the RSA staff had ever raised the issues? IMAGE: One of the gates is welded shut. As reported last year, a spokesperson for the RSA said: The RSA has contacted a representative of the Moy Business Park in relation to the issue of the pedestrian gates, and we are awaiting their response on this matter. I can confirm that this issue has not been raised previously by RSA staff.On the lack of a continuous footpath, the RSA said: The RSA has contacted Mayo County Council in relation to the issue of the public path access to the RSA HQ on Primrose Hill. The Council has advised that the RSA make a submission on this issue to the Ballina Active Travel Plan and the RSA is currently drafting a submission as advised.The local area office of Mayo County Councils stock response to members of the public seems to be to brush any issue aside and tell people theyll have to wait for the Draft Ballina Local Transport Plan (which isnt just about active travel). This includes long-known safety-critical issues such as the new school on the other side of town that is opening on an 80km/h road with no footpath or crossing. The council doesnt seem to take the RSA any more seriously than it does residents. When this website asked the RSA for an update on the missing footpath, a spokesperson for the RSA this week said: Regarding Mayo County Council, the RSA made a submission to the Mayo County Council Active Travel Plan 2023 in late 2023. The RSA has asked for an update on this.On the locked and welded gates, the spokesperson added: Regarding the Business Park, the RSA have not received a reply to this query from the Business Estate Management Company. A reminder will be issued to them.IMAGE: An old lock (pictured last year, left) has been replaced with a new combination lock (right), but this gate was still locked within business hours this week.And its hardly just these two issues of a gate and a section of footpath. The two issues happening on the short road to the RSAs HQ are just stunning examples of the lack of systematic road safety on our streets and roads.A long list of examples comes to mind when walking just 10 minutes are so across the town. I dropped my children at an after-school activity on the other side of the town and walked to the RSAs HQ to get the photographs for this article and the list of issues is so long its best done in bullet points:The junction at the public street outside the area hosts the Ballina Swimming Pool, Ballina Sports Centre, Ballina Tennis Club and Ballina Boxing Club. It is focused totally on car movement children and others struggle there, and it is inaccessible to prams and wheelchairs.Theres a zebra crossing on the main road, part of the N59 route with a lot of local traffic too, but the side street has no crossing over it and high kerbs. The whole setup of one-way traffic around the bridges at the River Moy in Ballina is designed for traffic flow but hardly even works for that.The crossings on the towns bridges are too ambiguous most drivers yield, but a cheap, easy and significant improvement would be to install raised crossings with new zebra crossing signs. After the Salmon Weir Bridge walking and cycling bridge, Barrett Street and Water Lane are used as part of the traffic system in the town its not a national or even regional route, but its an official rat run for both local and national traffic. Traffic routes are needed, but there are no formal crossings and only dropped kerbs at one of the four sides of the mini-roundabout where the streets meet.At Water Lane and James Connolly St, there is heavy traffic from different directions, but again, there is no formal crossing. Worse still, there are two examples of dropped kerbs on the opposite side that dont have matching drop kerbs this is where the footpath is lowered (for wheelchairs, prams etc) and has tactical paving (for people with visual impairments) but no corresponding treatment on the opposite footpath.This junction is also often in desperate need of daylighting daylighting junctions are where footpaths are built out, and its made impossible to park right at the junction, meaning crossing points are left free to use, and visibility is made clearer for motorists turning and people crossing. Next, were out at the bus station and faced with the N26 national road, which has turning lanes but no crossing over to the bus station. If you dont want to run across, the choices are a 400-metre walk in one direction or over 500 metres in the other. Given that its a sign-posted route for national traffic, theres also tokenist drop kerbs here across the side street junction. On the side road going up to the RSA the design is complicated by the level crossing and the entrance to the train stations freight yard directly after it, but when HGVs are turning in and out of the yard, theres not even a sliver of a footpath. Then, of course, we have the totally missing section of footpath a bit further up, as featured in this article, followed by the locked gates.Even if those are fixed, then inside the business park, the zebra crossings are all but washed away, and the design is built more like it was just for trucks when there are a number of retail outlets in the park.Just beyond the business park, the council has weirdly extended the footpath before fixing the existing gap. Work has just been finished after it was left unfinished since last year. But its on the opposite side of the road to the one footpath beside the business park, and while theres a dropped kerb on the old footpath, theres no dropped kerb on the brand new footpath to match it. And the crossing is after a bit of a blind bend with a wall on one side, possibly blocking the view of a child about to cross. Maybe they plan to add a raised crossing? None of the above observations require an engineering degree. These are issues that can be found around most of our towns and in different parts of many cities. Can the RSA not see it?
