Car brain mentality reaction to Wexford cycle lanes criticised by campaigners
The building of the Newtown Road Active Travel Pathfinder Scheme in Wexford has prompted a car brain mentality as highlighted in local media coverage, local cycling campaigners have said.Car brain and the more academically sounding motonormativity are phrases coined to be shorthand for a sort of status quo bias relating to the dominance of car use, the forgiveness of poor driver behaviour such as speeding and protectionism of the current street and road design which favours car and often encourages speeding. The Newtown Road Active Travel Pathfinder Scheme has a reported price tag of 3m for a 1.3km phase of the project. The work has included new footpaths with safer junctions, segregated cycle tracks, and full roadway resurfacing.Several local newspaper articles published in the Wexford People year including in which councillors from the nearby Rosslare area complain that the project exceeded the road maintenance budget for their area have incorrectly claimed or implied that the Newtown Road works were just cycle lanes. This is a recurring issue with projects nationally, which include substantial footpath works, road resurfacing, and other works that are claimed or implied to be just cycle lanes. The project, in this case, included both footpath replacement and a redesign of footpaths aimed at giving more priority to pedestrians and slowing cars to improve safety. It also included not just basic resurfacing but road strengthening in at least some locations. Cormac Mac Gearailt, chairperson of Wexford Bicycle User Group (WexBUG), said: There have been a number of articles in the local press recently which have focused on perceived negative aspects of active travel schemes and activities in Wexford.Article continues after the video in the tweet.A quick spin along the Newtown Rd. Amazing, the sky was still intact No residents hemmed in.No emergency vehicles being held up.No extra collisions.Nope everything just running along as smoothly as it was pre active travel scheme but a lot safer Top job @wexfordcoco pic.twitter.com/Pup8NrN1XO WexBUG (Wexford Bicycle User Group) (@WexBug) October 12, 2024WexBUG contends that there has been insufficient balance in the below articles and wishes to address this imbalance. At a time of increased fatalities on our roads and an ongoing climate emergency, its important to reflect on the full facts of the below in order to prevent the spread of misinformation, he said.Another example published in the Wexford People in July article was headlined, 3m cycle lane works causing chaos in Wexford estate We want our entrance back the way it was. End of story. The story outlines the annoyance of residents of the 70-house Coill Aoibhinn estate.Mac Gearailt said that this frames the improvement works to footpaths designed to improve pedestrian safety as negative, as it slows down vehicular traffic. The purpose of the improvements is to slow down vehicles in order to improve safety. The reporter said without attribution and in a matter-of-fact way: That entrance, already narrow, has been tightened up even further since the works on the cycle lane began, making life very difficult, and very dangerous, for those who live in Coill Aoibhinn. The article also included the claim from a resident that it was only the last few months that we noticed they had done one side of the footpath and how narrow they were making the entrance and then, all of a sudden, it was really narrowed, it was already a narrow entrance, which has now been made even narrower. By all accounts, especially for its location on a hill, the entrance is on the narrow side now, but it was previously very wide at its widest point. When the newspaper article was written the photographs accompanying it show that the entrance was temporally narrowed further by unfinished surfaces and traffic cones on both sides of the carriageway at the entrance. This situation, of course, will be worse than the road when the works are finished, but it is not uncommon for the media to imply that temporary issues will last longer than the construction phase. In the same article, the newspaper reporter said: Adding to the sense of frustration, is the lack of prior consultation as if this was a fact. This line was not quoting anybody and was not an directly attributed claim, it was also stated as fact. There was, however, prior consultation. As explained by a councillor later in the article, the residents claimed they were unaware of it.A resident was also quoted as having said: Were just really angry about it there was no consulting anyone beforehand, WCC [Wexford County Council] seem to think narrowing the road will reduce the speed. This is one of the busiest roads in the county and its prioritising cyclists and pedestrians over the people who live in this estate.Reducing traffic lane and entrance widths are proven measures to reduce speed on roads something an angry resident might be somewhat forgiven for not accepting, but important context that is the responsibility of a newspaper to include. Somewhat paradoxically, the same resident complained of other motorists travelling at speed while residents were trying to exit the estate in their cars. IMAGE: Before and after the entrance to Coill Aoibhinn.Another published in the same newspaper in July, was titled Wexford roadworks branded the most frustrating weve ever seen.Mac Gearailt said this article misrepresents delays to motorists as being caused by the addition of cycle lanes when it had already been clarified by the engineers that these delays are due to poor historical road engineering, requiring massive remedial upgrades. He added: These upgrades would have been necessary regardless of whether or not the cycle lane was being installed. Improvement to bus stops, footpaths, and junctions were also completed under this scheme.Another article, in May, outlined that Wexford councillors voice concerns over 3 million first phase of Newtown Road cycle scheme.Mac Gearailt said that it is implied that modern and safe active travel is not worth being done to a high standard but he thinks that Completing works to a high standard saves the state and taxpayer money in the long run.He said: Short-term thinking regarding the quality of infrastructure has led to the necessity for massive remedial works in this area. This scheme is attempting to reverse decades of car-centric road development in county Wexford.Another also in May, titled Concerns that Wexford County Councils 3m cycle track will spell disaster for emergency vehicles and buses, he said listed the grievances of car/bus/coach drivers relating to works that are designed and implemented to a national standard, but he added: There have been no issues with access for busses and emergency services vehicles to date. The Newtown Road project also includes central hatching for much of its length, where emergency services could overtake motorists.Mac Gearailt said: These articles, written and presented against a backdrop of a rise in fatal road traffic collisions and an ongoing climate emergency often give precedence to anecdotal incidents or perceived threats without relaying the facts for the reader. WexBUB also pointed to articles about electric scooters, which the group said contracts to clear law-breaking by motorists in relation to speeding, illegal footpath parking, and mobile phone use behind the wheel is conspicuous by its absence.Mac Gearailt said that the Wexford People published an article written by WexBUG founder and PRO Phil Skelton, that pointed out the benefits of active travel, cycling, and welcomed the then-incomplete Newtown Road scheme. But he said that that has been outweighed by the follow-on reporting, which has framed the project in a negative light with little or no balance.WexBUG is disappointed to see a lack of engagement with easily obtainable facts from recent reporting. Reading between the lines, recent articles seem to imply that the only viewpoint that matters is that which is observed through a car windscreen. The above examples portray the narrative that prioritising pedestrian safety and re-allocating road space for safe and segregated cycling infrastructure is not worth it, if it is perceived to inconvenience drivers, he said.An increase of safe, segregated active travel infrastructure also encourages a modal shift, getting people out of their cars and onto other modes of transport, reducing, in many cases, traffic at peak times. This is of benefit to all society. It is unfortunate that local media and some local representatives do not wish to represent those constituents who wish to choose or are choosing a more sustainable approach to travel, Mac Gearailt said.He added: We would call on the local media and councillors to engage with us, and to challenge the car brain mentality.IrishCycle.com contacted the Wexford People early on Monday morning to seek comment on the criticism of its coverage. A follow-up email was sent in the afternoon. No reply was received at the time of publication.

    Happy Unmentionable Day!
Todays post will be brief in observation of Columbus Day:Sorry, Indigenous Peoples Day. Streetsblog wants you to know the WONT be observing Columbus Day, but they WILL be taking the day off, thankyouverymuch:They also take pains to enumerate Columbuss many character flaws which include being rapacious, being Spanish, and being Jewish:A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, goes the oft-quoted line from the distressingly hetero-normative Romeo and Juliet. Does the same not hold true for federal holidays? Call it whatever you want, ultimately youre just fucking off from work. Speaking of polarizing subjects, the Internet was abuzz over the weekend with this video in which an extremely agitated older Fred accosts an extremely relaxed younger motorist over an alleged close-pass:Alas, between the attitude, the Saab jersey, and the backwards Fred-waddle when he goes to rattle off the drivers license plate to the cops, he makes us look bad enough:[Pro tip: dont keep straddling the bike when youre done riding.]But then he says the phrase that will ensure motorists will continue to hate and harass us for all eternity:Im riding a bike, I have more rights than you! While Ive mostly given up now, I spent many years actively fighting the myth that cyclists are nothing but a bunch of entitled elitists, and now here comes this guy and undoes it all in the course of a single viral video. And yet I also feel compassion for the cyclist, who clearly feels as though the world is out to get him. For example, he tells the police that he feels extremely unsafe because theres another person on the scene. We then see the other person:He looks absolutely terrifying. And of course anyone who rides bikes has experienced being passed too closely. Here in New York people pass you so closely you dont even notice unless you feel it in your arm hairs. Plenty of us have also been hit this way; I still think about the woman who sideswiped me, sent me sprawling, and then shrugged and said, I thought I could get around you. However, this does not seem to be what happened here:As the story notes, the video doesnt show the exact distance of the pass, but it also doesnt seem to convey anything even remotely harrowing. So is the cyclist here the Lycra-clad embodiment of entitlement? Or is he just a guy who, like all of us, has been subject to the aggression, indifference, and ineptitude of motorists and finally had enough? According to him its the latter:Though it seems more like a little bit of both.Either way, I submit this video as exhibit one billion of why confronting drivers is never worth it. Forget the passafter trying to detain a complete stranger hes lucky to be alive.

Pogaar vs Merckx: Who had the best season ever?
CyclistPogaar vs Merckx: Who had the best season ever?Tadej Pogaar has finally called an end to his superlative 2024 season. This year, he claimed wins at the Giro dItalia, Tour de France and World Championships as well as two Monuments, the most recent coming last weekend at Il Lombardia. A season like this hasnt been seen in decades. Or has it?While Pogaar soaks up the deserving praise for his once-in-a-generation season, only one rider has come close to a season like this before. Like all cycling records, Eddy Merckx is the benchmark. The Belgian nicknamed The Cannibal for a reason had a frighteningly similar season in 1972 at the age of 27. That year, Merckx claimed two Grand Tours, three Monuments, an Hour record, two stage race wins and a handful of one-day races across Europe. Its considered the most illustrious year in his career. With every big race win, Pogaar is edging closer to entering the same ring as Merckx. However, before we get ahead of ourselves and claim him the GOAT, lets get one thing straight and take a look at Tadej Pogaar and Eddy Merckxs anni mirabiles.Eddy Merckxs 1972 seasonTo outline our point of comparison, lets remind ourselves of Eddy Merckxs 1972 season. In total, Merckx claimed 33 wins throughout 1972, including two Grand Tours and a handful of other impressive honours.Starting his Grand Tour odyssey, Merckx clinched the Giro dItalia despite a spring peppered with bad luck at least by Merckxs standards. After a rusty start to the race, he picked up momentum by the second week. With strong performance in the time-trials and summit finishes, he managed to win four stages en route to his third maglia rosa. At the Tour de France, he stepped up a notch to claim six stages (seven if you include the team time-trial). Half of those wins came against the clock, but he led the fight from the front and claimed the overall win by ten minutes.Alongside this feat, the Cannibal also gobbled up three Monuments during 1972: Milan-Sanremo, Lige-Bastogne-Lige and Il Lombardia. To add, he finished in the top ten at the Tour of Flanders and Paris-Roubaix. Outside of the Monuments, Merckx took home one-day wins at La Flche Wallonne, Brabantse Pijl, Scheldeprijs, Gran Piemonte, Giro dellEmilia, Trofeo Baracchi. However, he missed out on defending his road world title. This was countered by a different world title though. Merckx smashed the Hour record in 1972, clocking up a total length of 49.431km during his 60-minutes in Mexico City. Despite being set on a steel frame with drop handlebars, this UCI record stood for 28 years. Why 1972 and not another season from the Eddy Merckx archive? Why did we choose the year Merckx missed out on a rainbow jersey? Well, its down to numbers.1972 was his most victorious season when combined with Grand Tour victories. Plus, the three Monuments wins in a single season an accolade only achieved by Merckx himself helped 1972 stick out among the Belgians palmars.1971 saw a similarly strong season. He clocked up a total of 35 wins, with another three Monuments under his belt. However, there was no Giro title to complement his Tour win. In 1970, his other double Grand Tour season, Merckx scooped up two Monument wins, but no rainbow jersey. For a proper comparison of his peak, we have to consider 1972 as the ideal point of comparison against Pogaar. Related Posts Opinion: Il Lombardia shouldnt be a Monument in its current form GOAT Bingo: What does Tadej Pogaar still have left to win? Pro bike: Tadej Pogaars World Championships-winning Colnago V4Rs Cyclist Magazine Podcast episode 114: Tadej Pogaar interview How he won the Tour, Vingegaard, losing, winning again, and his work with PlumeStrong Tadej Pogaars 2024 seasonXavier PereyronI think were all very familiar with Tadej Pogaars palmars this year. However, heres a refresher if the wins fairly blur into one big yellow, pink and rainbow haze.Lets start with the big achievement. Pogaar sealed the Triple Crown this year, becoming the first rider since 1987 to collect the pink, yellow and rainbow jerseys in the same season. When embarking on this project at the Giro, Pogaar was untouchable. It only took two days of racing to claim his first stage win and move into the maglia rosa. From there it was smooth sailing for the Slovenian as he scooped up six stages in total. The Tour was a similar story. From Stage 2, Pogaar had already risen to the top of the main GC contenders. With a stage win on day four, the gold rush continued. In the end, another six stages came his way, with particularly dominant performances at Isola 2000 and Plateau de Beille.Elsewhere in the calendar, Pogaar picked up two Monuments at Lige-Bastogne-Lige and Il Lombardia. In winning the Race of the Falling Leaves, Pogaar clinched his fourth consecutive win at the race. Not even Merckx won a Monument four times in a row. The newly crowned World Champion only claimed one stage race outside of a Grand Tour at the Volta a Catalunya, however, wins at Strade Bianche and GP Montral kept the top-tier WorldTour wins coming during Pogaars high-flying 2024.In total, Pogaar pinched 25 wins this season (including overall classifications). All his wins bar the Giro dellEmilia were on the UCI WorldTour level. Altogether, this means that he won 38% of the stages he started (including one-day races) and was undefeated in stage races this year. Pogaar finished on the podium in all the one-day races he started except one, the GP Qubec, where he was seventh. The head-to-headA.S.O./Gatan FlammeNumber of wins: 33 (Eddy Merckx), 25 (Tadej Pogaar)Win rate: 39.4% (Eddy Merckx), 38.0% (Tadej Pogaar)Race days: 127 (Eddy Merckx), 58 (Tadej Pogaar)Grand Tour wins: 2 (Eddy Merckx), 2 (Tadej Pogaar)Other stage race wins: 2 (Eddy Merckx: Escalada a Montjuc, Travers Lausanne), 1 (Tadej Pogaar: Volta a Catalunya)Monument wins: 3 (Eddy Merckx: Milan-San Remo, Lige-Bastogne-Lige, Il Lombardia), 2 (Tadej Pogaar: Lige-Bastogne-Lige, Il Lombardia)Other one-day wins: 8 (Eddy Merckx: Brabantse Pijl, Flche Wallonne, Grand Prix de Momignies, Scheldeprijs, GP Union Dortmund, Gran Piemonte, Giro dellEmilia, Trofeo Baracchi), 3 (Tadej Pogaar: Strade Bianche, Grand Prix Cycliste de Montral, Giro dellEmilia)World Championship titles: 0 (Eddy Merckx), 1 (Tadej Pogaar)Comparing the twoDario Belingheri/Getty ImagesLooking at the big victories, the two look very similar. 25 wins in comparison to 33 is a small difference. Particularly when you factor in the big differences in race days, they have fairly similar results. Both dominated the Giro and Tour, claiming numerous wins along the way. I would argue that Pogaars victories are more impressive given how strong he was across multiple terrains and disciplines in an age where riders appear hyper-specialised. Pogaar also picked up more road stage victories at Grand Tours in 2024 than Eddy Merckx in 1972.Although Pogaar took part in fewer stage races than Merckx did in 1972, Pogaar had an unbeaten record in them this year. Merckx missed out on Paris-Nice by six seconds and finished 33rd at the Tour of Sardinia. Pogaar, therefore, wins on the stage racing front. The pro-Pogaar argument faces some difficulty when we look towards the Monuments. Bagging top ten finishes at all five Monuments is mightily impressive from Merckx. In spite of a broken vertebrae and a heavy crash at Paris-Roubaix, Merckx still claimed three Monument wins. Moreover, he bagged Brabantse Pijl and Schedleprijs, two staples of the Belgian calendar yet to be claimed by Pogaar.Pogaar winning Lige and Lombardia doesnt seem quite as impressive given that they are both climber-friendly Monuments either. If he had added the Tour of Flanders or Milan-San Remo this year, it would be a different discussion. On the other hand, though, Eddy Merckx didnt come close to winning Lombardia by over three minutes in his triumphant 1972 season.Although widely accepted as his strongest season, Merckxs 1972 misses a rainbow jersey. This gives Pogaars 2024 season a huge advantage. Plus, during Merckxs Triple Crown year of 1974, he failed to win a Monument. To this date, Pogacar is the only rider to win a Monument and the Triple Crown in one season. For that, his 2024 record could be considered unassailable. Is a rainbow jersey equal to Mercxs extra Monument win? Yes. If anything, it outweighs it. For that, Pogaar certainly edges clear of Merckx territory and into unknown cycling territory. Our verdictThe battle for the best season in mens cycling history comes down to a photo finish, but I lean towards proclaiming Pogaars 2024 as the GSOAT (greatest season of all time). Its incredibly hard to separate the two. How Pogaar dominated around half of his race days was almost dictatorial. Even with increased opposition and a streamlined professional peloton competing against him all year round, he still managed to decimate his rivals throughout 2024. In comparison, Merckx was wobbled by his opponents in 1972. Raymond Poulidor beat him to the Paris-Nice title and Jos Manuel Fuente had him on the ropes during week one of the Giro that year. This year, Pogaar was rarely shaken by his opposition. However, I cant look past Eddy Merckxs ability to succeed in any type of race. The Belgians 1972 Grand Tour stats are almost identical to Pogaars, even down to the winning margins at the Grand Tours. However, Merckx gets an edge for me when it comes to the one-day racing. Pogaar was maybe a little too pragmatic with his race days this year. Merckx ticked every box in 1972 apart from a rainbow jersey. The Belgians ambitious yet successful Hour record attempt definitely gives him a niche over Pogaar, however the Slovenian successfully pulled off the Triple Crown and then some. With Monument wins on top of the three most prestigious jerseys in the sport, Pogaars 2024 season will be held as the true ceiling in cycling for decades to come. Merckx had a few of these seasons in his legs, so we can only guess that Pogaar is just getting started. If he can pull this off at 26, it wouldnt surprise me if Pogaar has another season like this left in him.Triple Crown and Paris-Roubaix next year? Why not?
