Boschs new Performance CX eBike Motor is Not More Powerful, But is Better, and Lighter
Theres an all-new Bosch Performance Line CX ebike motor. It has the same torque output, the same peak & nominal power, and even the same pedal-assist support multiplier. So, what makes it better?Bosch says the real upgrades are smoother, quieter operation, and a more natural feel while riding. Plus, they claims that it is 3% lighter, which boosts its power:weight ratio. And who doesnt want to save 100g.Bosch Performance CX eBike motor gets new upgradesBosch dubs this latest generation of their CX motor: Power meets Control. Its a combination of improved sensor technology inside combined with smarter power delivery management programming all inside a slightly lighter magnesium casing. Described as more responsive, more controlled, and more direct, Bosch says the new motor creates a more natural riding experience. And thats to refined materials and gears inside the gearbox, Bosch reduced the noise of the motor spinning for a quieter eMTB ride. The new Bosch Performance CX eBike motor (BDU384Y) weighs a claimed 2.8kg (down 100g from the previous generation.Whats actually new?By both improving and reinterpreting the live data Bosch collects from the internal motor inertial measurement unit, cadence, and torque sensors, the new CX motor can more accurately and more quickly react to real trail situations. A big benefit of that is the new Hill Start Assist feature that allows the motor to instantly react when you put power to a pedal, making it much easier to start climbing up loose terrain, with a newfound smoothness to maintain traction. (Photos/Bosch)Extended Boost is another similarly-linked performance improvement. Much like the signature longer power support you used to get only in the CX Race motor, now you should be able to quickly kick the pedals on the new standard CX motor to get more support through narrow technical sections where you might not be able to keep a smooth continuous pedal stroke. Bosch says this also helps eMTB riders pick up the front wheel to get over tougher obstacles, making it a more natural ride feel to get the most out of pedal-assist.Theres also the automated electronic shift integration with the new TRP A12 E.A.S.I derailleur system that we previewed at Eurobike, along with AI-managed smart assist levels and the new extra range Eco+ mode.New 600Wh & 800Wh PowerTube batteriesBatteries and their capacities are often the purviews of individual ebike makers. But now two new standard 600Wh & 800Wh PowerTube internal battery options will make it easy for many manufacturers to spec a lighter or longer range setup.Plus, theres the 1.5kg PowerMore 250Wh external range extender thats about the size of a water bottle (but requires a proprietary mount) to take you further,New Purion 400 displayBosch also has a new small handlebar-mounted color display to show you keep eMTB stats at a glance, without getting in the way. The new Purion 400 sits next to your stem, and looks strikingly similar to the typical Shimano display that has come with MTB Di2 & EP8 ebikes for years. That was one of the things I missed whenever I would switch from Shimano to Bosch systems, so this little display will be a big boost for usability in my book.Tech detailsnew BDU384Y CX motorYou still get a max 85Nm of torque, max 600W of motor power (still rated 250W nominal to meet ebike regulations), and a max 340% support factor multiplying the power you put in at the pedals. Go SX if you want something lighter and less powerful, or CX Race if you want even more power.Updated Bosch Performance CX system Availabilitya Pivot Shuttle AM modified to test the next-gen CX motorOf course, you cant just go out and buy a new Bosch Performance CX system and slap it into an existing ebike. But the new CX generation is already popping up in a bunch of new performance eMTBs. And we expect to see it gradually replace the previous iteration as ebike get updated through the rest of the year into 2025. Foe now you can check out new ebikes like the Focus JAM and the Santa Cruz Vala that get the new smoother motor and updated ebike drive system. Marins New Larkspur E Gets Lights, Fenders, and a Bosch Motor
A few years back I reviewed a pretty unique bike from Marin Bicycles, the Larkspur. Well, now theyve added a new model with the Larkspur E. The new city/adventure bike is all dressed up with front and rear lights, fenders, and a Bosch Active Line Plus motor.(Photos / Marin Bikes)The new Larkspur E still has the spirit of the original Larkspur adventure/mixte, but is now ready for some serious commuting. Dont get me wrong though, if you wanted to take the Larkspur E out on the fire roads around town, its up for it.The Larkspur E is a fully capable bike on any terrain. Be it exploring the neighborhood, grabbing groceries, commuting, or venturing on gravel trails, it can handle it all.It Comes with Good StuffThe Larkspur Es Bosch Active Line Plus drive unit gives a claimed range of 25-93 miles. This range depends on rider weight, the level of assistance used, and the terrain that is being ridden. The battery can be fully recharged in only 4 hours. It carries a top-assisted speed of 20MPH. The different assist modes are picked on the cleanly integrated display which sits next to the left grip. The E part of the Larkspur E uses the Bosch Smart System, has 50Nm of torque, and a 545Wh battery. The Larkspur E also sports a Shimano CUES drivetrain, which is designed to run specifically with center drive motors. Stopping power is delivered with Shimano hydraulic brakes and big 180mm rotors. Its also equipped with a dropper post in case there is some gnar on the way home from grabbing groceries. Or more realistically, it provides a way to comfortably stop at intersections and make getting on/off easier with a lower saddle. Hunt lowers weight, ups the aero on its new 40 Limitless Gravel Aero wheelset
CyclistHunt lowers weight, ups the aero on its new 40 Limitless Gravel Aero wheelsetHunt Wheels has overhauled its premium gravel wheelset with the new 40 Limitless Gravel Aero using lighter hubs and offering the option to spec carbon spokes, which together result in a claimed 1,380g wheelset weight, some 220g lighter than its predecessor.Hunts wind tunnel test results indicate that the new wheelset is marginally second only to the 3T Discus 45 / 40 wheelset in a head-to-head test against a range of gravel bike wheels, when used with 40mm or 45mm nominal width Schwalbe G-One tyres.Prices for the new 40 Limitless Gravel Aero wheelset range from 1,479 with steel spokes and bearings, through 1,849 with carbon spokes and steel bearings to 2,449 with carbon spokes and CeramicSpeed bearings.Lower weightHunt launched its previous generation 42 Limitless Gravel Aero (LGA) wheelset in 2020. The feedback from Hunts gravel pros who raced on the wheels was that although they valued the aero performance and stability, they wanted lower weight. So Hunt set out to reduce its successor wheelsets weight while maintaining or improving the aero performance. It has achieved the former by incorporating into the new 40 LGA gravel wheels much of the tech it introduced in the road-going Sub50 Limitless Aero Disc wheelset, which was released in February 2024.Hunt WheelsThat includes adopting carbon spokes although steel spokes remain an option for the new wheels. The stronger carbon spokes have allowed it to reduce the spoke count to 20 from the steel-spoked variants 24 front and rear. At the same time, Hunt claims that the wheels are laterally stiffer, with the carbon spokes also transmitting less vibration to the rider than steel.Hunts carbon spokes use conventional nipples, so the wheels can be trued or a spoke replaced if needed. The brand offers a lifetime crash repair/replacement warranty on all variants of the wheelset.Hunt WheelsFurther weight reduction comes from Hunts latest 314g per set H_Ratchet DBL alloy hubs, which have a 48-tooth ratchet freehub with 7.5-degree engagement. Again, its tech ported over from the Sub50 road wheels. New aero rim profilesHunt WheelsHunt has aero optimised the 40 LGA wheels for 40mm and 45mm Schwalbe G-One Allround and G-One R tyres, as it says that these are the most popular widths for its gravel pros. With knobblier tyres, the side knobs dominate the results of aero testing. It started its aero development with a set of 42 different rim profiles, performing around 2,500 hours of CFD simulations to whittle this starting set down to three front wheel and five rear wheel profiles. These it progressed to wind tunnel testing with a complete bike, first with 3D printed mock-ups then with carbon fibre prototypes. Theres a full white paper available on Hunts website if you want to dig into the details. Its testing concluded that the best aero performance, with good handling and stability, was achieved with a front wheel thats 40mm deep, with a 36mm external/27mm internal width. At the rear it uses a slightly deeper 41mm profile thats 35mm wide externally and 26mm internally. Although wide, thats still quite a bit less than the width of the new Zipp 303 XPLR gravel wheels, which are 32mm wide internally, although theyre also heavier at a claimed 1,496g.Hunt says that aero performance is most important at the front wheel, where airflow is more laminar, while lower weight is a more significant consideration at the rear wheel, as airflow there is already turbulent.Hunt WheelsHunt has adopted a hookless bead design, as it says that this results in a better tyre profile, with straighter sidewalls. This still conforms to ETRTO guidelines and allows it to reduce rim weight and increase manufacturing consistency. Hunt says it also reduces the risk of pinch flats.Performance versus competitorsHunt WheelsHunt has wind tunnel tested its new 40 LGA wheelset against a range of wheelsets from competitors such as Enve, Zipp, Reserve, Cadex, DT Swiss, 3T and more. Its chosen wind and wheel rotation speeds were 40 and 45km/h and it tested over yaw angles between +/- 20 degrees. Tests took place at the GST Windkanal wind tunnel in Immenstaad, Germany. It claims that only the 3T Discus 45 / 40 wheels were more aero, but that this is achieved with 314g extra weight, so that once weight is taken into consideration its new wheels performance is best in class for aero gravel wheelsets.Prices and availabilityThe premium spec Hunt 40 LGA wheelset, complete with CeramicSpeed bearings and 20 carbon spokes front and rear has a list price of 2,449 / $2,989 / 2,898 and a claimed 1,328g weight.Swapping from CeramicSpeed to steel bearings, with the same carbon spokes, the weight remains the same, but the price decreases to 1,849 / $2,279 / 2,279.With 24 steel spokes and steel bearings, the claimed weight is 1,431g and the price is 1,479 / $1,849 / 1,849.The new Hunt 40 Limitless Gravel Aero wheelset can be pre-ordered immediately, with a limited number of wheelsets slated for delivery in late November.
