Refreshed Bus ireann site has some wrinkles
Comment & Analysis: I was delighted to find a sleek new look when I visited Bus ireanns website the other day. Sadly, I ran into niggles that are minor but can have a major impact. Please bear in mind that I am only one user, and my experience could very well be an exception. My site visits are exclusively to see what times a given bus service runs so I can plan accordingly. It is good for them that they have news, but their news is unlikely to be the primary reason people visit their site.I scrolled down and thought Id found what I wanted:Alas, the Routes & Timetables page was not useful at all. It lists routes by number, so if you are searching for a route but dont know the number, youre out of luck. There is no search function I could find, nor any options to list routes by a different metric. Youre therefore faced with a very long list and no way provided through the site to hone in on the route you want:I tried the menu, which looked like this:Plan Journey looked like the obvious choice, but your options are:I didnt need to buy tickets, nor did I need to find a fare or any of the other options listed there. I wanted to know what my options would be for getting from Cavan to Dundalk on a weekday.I thought Id try the fare finder, but this led me to the same problem I had with the routes list: its listed by route number, and I had no idea what route number I was looking for:Fine, I thought, perhaps the booking tickets function was my only choice. No doubt it would be possible to see options or a link to the route timetable so you could just see what your options were for the day between two destinations.I happened to know there is a service that runs directly between Cavan and Dundalk, but I couldnt remember the number. I just wanted to see what times it ran and how long the journey would take. From a design perspective, I like this. Its nice and clean. But I really didnt like that I was forced to input a specific time. I didnt want to see my options for a specific time. I wanted to see the timetable for the route for the whole day. But okay, no doubt the thinking was that this would also serve that purpose. The result I got was this, and to be fair, kudos to the designers for showing people their journey in one go with connections included, similar to Irish Rails site, but in my case, the result was woeful:Now, if you spot what I missed, you win a lollipop. As it was, I saw options listed by time and looked until I got to an arrival time of 18:44, which would be too late for my purposes. Also, FOUR HOURS?? What the hell? I was so sure there was a route directly between Cavan and Dundalk without a detour to Dublin.I ended up going back to the routes list, and using the find in page function of my browser to finally find what I was by now risking blowing a gasket to unearth. It is only when I sent a torrent of screenshots to a friend, venting about the tragedy of this lovely new design being so frustrating to use, that I noticed at the bottom of the listed options the service appeared that I had been looking for from the beginning.I am at a complete loss to understand how anyone thought that a potential passenger would want to see results listed by service rather than by departure time. I want to have a conversation with the decision-makers behind this because I really want to know how they thought this was a good idea.I happened to know there was something better than the four Expressway options listed before the two direct options, so I kept looking for details on the route. Would someone without that knowledge do the same? Would most people look through the whole list, even if theyre in a hurry, or am I not unique in checking arrival times within the timeframe that might work for me and then stopping? If the first four items in a list appear by departure time, what would make you assume that options lower in the list would not follow that same order?I found it extremely frustrating to use this site, but the changes I would suggest to eliminate my difficulties would be relatively small (though they could be technically difficult):Add a button right at the top of the site to take you straight to the ticket booking page. List results by departure time, not by service, by default.Add an option to list results by service, if that is how people want to see it presented.Solving the problem of a massive routes list ordered by number, which non-regular users would not know, is more tricky and would probably not meet enough peoples needs to be worth the work, but if youre not going to let people just zoom in to the route theyre looking for you need to be more mindful with how you list results.Redesigning the site must have been a huge job, and its been well done for the most part. This is a small, but significant problem that I hope Bus ireann can solve.

Sneaking In Through The Back Door
We are now on the other side of the autumn equinox, and little bits of color are starting to appear in the foliage:As the squirrel diligently collects nuts in anticipation of a long winter, so does the wise cyclist make the most of the fall by riding as much as possible. One could argue quite successfully that there is no better season for velocipeding: cool and crisp, set against a vibrant backdrop of changing leaves. Its also the best time of year to venture off-road. In the spring everythings all soft and mushy, and in the summer its downright swampy and you sweat right through your clothes whilst swatting away at a halo of mosquitoes. But in the fall everythings just right for dirt rambling in street clothes:While the Roaduno is, as its name would suggest, a road-oriented bicycle, it does seem to want to pull me into the shrubbery like a dog that keeps getting locked on a scent. Where I live there are the main routes in and out of town, but there are also numerous lesser-known portals, such as this one, which I used on my way home this morning:The buildings are in Yonkers, but the greenery beyond it is New York City, and heres how you access it:The opening in the fence is barely wide enough to pass through with a bicycle:And theyd rather you didnt:But there was no border czar to stop me, and I left no trace to betray my presence save perhaps the faintest impression of my Rock n Road tires in the dirt:From there I made my way to legitimate bicycle infrastructure, though these days theyre really bike lanes in name only, and the vehicle parked at the curb is far more indicative of what youll typically find in them these days:Years ago, in a former life, when this bike lane was merely a glimmer in the DOTs eye, I spoke in favor of it at a community board meeting, much to the chagrin and disgust of most of the other taxpayers (and youd better believe they made sure you knew they were taxpayers) who had assembled to stop what theyd have you believe was the destruction of the neighborhood, the city, and society as a whole. Now its been something like six years since the bike lane went in, and while the bike lane did not in fact usher in the apocalypse, it also didnt transform the neighborhood into a cycling utopia. Certainly its a net gainmostly because of the bus islands they also incorporated into the design, and while I havent checked lately Im fairly certain the street has gotten statistically safer for pedestrians thanks to the shorter crossings. But the same people who said, Gee, I think Id like to try biking! in 2018 still havent tried it, probably because the same highway entrance and exit ramps that were there before they painted the street green are still there, and also because Gee, I think Id like to try biking! is one of those things people always say but never do, like Gee, Id like to start eating healthier! or Gee, Id like to start saving money for the future! Those of us who do actually ride bicycles appear to be born with a certain gene and/or defect, and perhaps thinking people are going to start riding just because of a bike lane is as naive as thinking we defectives are going to stop riding because there isnt a bike lane.Speaking of advocating, nobody does hyperbole like Streetblog:The Parks Department will close off a mile-and-a-half stretch of the busiest bike path in America for six months, sending cyclists onto dangerous streets of the Upper West Side, with astoundingly little warning, starting today. https://t.co/6lEsSvNs78 Streetsblog New York (@StreetsblogNYC) September 23, 2024Not just little warning, but ASTOUNDINGLY little warning! Sure its annoying, but youd think cyclists were being lined up against the wall and shot. But according to Streetsblog the hyberbole is warranted, because already people are riding onto the highway to certain death:As I mentioned, in my neighborhood they built a bike lane right across multiple highway entrance and exit ramps, and I suppose one could argue that represents a failure of government. (They could have put it on the other side of the street, but, you know, parking.) But if I see this state of affairs and decide to ride my bike onto the highway thats not a failure of government, thats just me being stupid. Also, are journalists supposed to look at pictures and make up stories about them? How do they know this was the cyclists normal commute? Also, judging peoples actions based entirely on their attire and equipment is the job of semi-professional bike bloggers, not news sites, and even if you zoom in you cant see nearly enough to tell what kind of cyclist this is:The tires look kinda skinny and the pants look kinda tight but thats about all you can see. Is this a roadie? A triathlete? I cant even tell if theres a derailleur or not. Maybe its one of those crazy fixie people who rides on the highway on purpose:By the way, its closed because theyre fixing the path. Yes, I realize theyre not holding your hand and tickling your balls and whispering in your ear how special you are while theyre doing it, but Im sure people will survive this nightmarish detour onto Riverside Drive:Im old enough to remember when we actually rode there on purpose. But Streetsblog is eminently rational compared to its readers, who pine for the days before the Industrial Revolution:Ah yes, the good old days. There was slavery, women couldnt vote, and the age of consent was like 7 years old. As for health, the average life expectancy in 1800 was like 66 years, strep was a death sentence, and the infant mortality was like 46%. If you lived long enough to die from cancer it was nothing short of a miracle. But at least you never had to drive.
