Who are the favourites for the mens World Championships Road Race 2024?
CyclistWho are the favourites for the mens World Championships Road Race 2024?The crowning moment of the cycling season, the World Championships will conclude this weekend with the mens road race on Sunday 29th September in Zrich, Switzerland. At a total length of 273km with 4,470m of elevation gain, this course is akin to LigeBastogneLige (which has roughly 4,300 metres of elevation gain). Therefore, this should be a race for the Ardennes specialists, albeit on a route a couple of hundred kilometres away from the Belgian hills.Mathieu van der Poel will come back to try to retain his title. After winning the rainbow jersey in Glasgows George Square last year, Van der Poel is unlikely to keep the jersey with the stiff opposition of Tadej Pogaar and Remco Evenepoel on the startlist. With the ultimate rainbow-coloured prize on the line, the roll call at this years World Championships is packed with Grand Tour champions, Monument winners and real contenders for a medal. So with all that in mind, who do the bookmakers peg as the favourites to win the 2024 World Championships Road Race? Here are some of the most hotly-tipped riders.Tadej Pogaar, SloveniaDean Mouhtaropoulos/Getty ImagesTop of our list and probably everyones list is Tadej Pogaar. The Slovenian has been dominating the 2024 cycling calendar. Hes claimed a Monument, two Grand Tours and a bunch of stage races and Classics. Everything points towards another Pogi show in Switzerland. The course suits him well, but any course does. 2km in length and at a 6% gradient, the crucial climb on the route is the perfect springboard for Pogaar. Hes also got the appropriate kick on him to win it from a reduced sprint. Even last year, he defeated Mads Pedersen at the end of a long day of racing.I dont think weve ever had a rider more worthy of winning the rainbow jersey than him. Dont forget, if he does win it all, Pogaar would also seal the Triple Crown after his Giro-Tour double earlier this year.Rating: 5/5 Related Posts Flashback Friday: When Peter Sagan dominated the World Championships Cyclist Magazine Podcast episode 114: Tadej Pogaar on the Tour, Vingegaard, hating being in yellow, and his work with PlumeStrong Pro cycling transfers 2024/2025: Castrillos choices, Astana signings, Van Aert signs his life away and Chabbey leaves Canyon-SRAM UCI Road World Championships 2024: Routes, how to watch and all you need to know Remco Evenepoel, BelgiumZac Williams/ZW PhotographyWinner of this event back in 2022, Remco Evenepoel will undoubtedly be one of the men to watch in Zrich. Bear in mind, this course is harder than the one he triumphed on two years ago. However, Evenepoel is a climber who is unlikely to be taking tight stock of elevation gain figures. His team will support him well we would imagine. Tim Wellens and Tiesj Benoot are likely to play leading roles in this race. Wellens, in particular, could be a strong second card if things dont quite go to plan for Evenepoel.Remcos exploits at the Olympic Games last month may serve as a cautionary tale for whats to come. That said, its rare that someone can follow him when hes on one of those days. However, we havent quite seen how Tadej Pogaar would react to the long-distance Remco effort. Maybe the Slovenian is the only person who can block Remco from taking another rainbow jersey.Rating: 4/5Marc Hirschi, SwitzerlandAnthony Anex/KeystoneOh, Marc Hirschi. The Swiss rider has had quite the career so far, and hes only just turned 26.Hirschi is on an impressive streak at the moment. He has won the past five races that he has taken part in. Not even Pogaar has done that this season. Yes, some of the races are a little Mickey Mouse, but this streak includes wins at the WorldTour Bretagne Classic and Klasikoa San Sebastian.Hirschi has been giving us glimpses of his old form this summer. Hes looking sprightly in the hills and his top-end kick seems to be back. Four years ago, he claimed a medal in the road race. Perhaps he can add another one to his collection this year before he heads to Tudor Pro Cycling in the winter.Rating: 3/5Pello Bilbao, SpainA.S.O./Charly LopezSpain will be led by Basque rider Pello Bilbao. The Bahrain Victorious rider has been a little underwhelming over the past six months. A blunt Tour de France and an anonymous August have been turned around in the past week following two top ten placements in Qubec and Montral. At the latter, he claimed a podium place behind winner Pogaar.Bilbao also held his own in Montral to keep the gap steady between himself and Pogaar out in front. Given how similar that race is to this, I wouldnt be too shocked if we see him on the final podium in Zurich. With his strong climbing legs, willingness to attack and race-savvy mind in one-day races, Bilbao is a strong each-way bet for the podium. Dont forget about his kick as well, hes easily one of the better sprinters amongst the climbers.Rating: 3/5Primo Rogli, SloveniaUnipublic / CxclingA former LigeBastogneLige winner himself, Primo Rogli will start as Slovenias second-best chance of scoring the rainbow bands. The Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe rider is coming straight from a Vuelta victory and he will have spent more time on the roads given that he raced the time-trial as well. The climb suits Rogli and he has a strong sprint on him from a reduced bunch. If youre worried about an internal power struggle in the Slovenian camp, dont be. Rogli and Pogaar have worked closely before on the Slovenian national team. They collaborated at the 2020 World Championships and have a close personal connection. If Pogaar isnt up to the job which he surely will be Rogli is a sure enough contender for the final podium.Rating: 2/5Matteo Jorgenson, USAA.S.O./Charly LopezMatteo Jorgenson has been one of the revelations of the 2024 season. In winning Paris-Nice and coming just a couple of seconds away from the Critrium du Dauphins yellow jersey, Jorgenson has become one of the most marked men in the peloton.Jorgenson rode a strong race in Montral last weekend. He was active at the front of the race and visible even after Pogaar decided to fly off the front. He also impressed at the Olympic Games. This should come as no surprise. The American has finished in the top ten at the Tour of Flanders, Tour de France and E3 Saxo Classic. As one of the perennial figures in top tens this year, he will surely be at the pointy end of affairs on Sunday. The Idaho-raised rider will be backed up by Neilson Powless and Quinn Simmons. Together with Brandon McNulty, the American team will be one of the strongest on the startline in Zrich.Rating: 2/5Richard Carapaz, EcuadorMichael Steele/Getty ImagesAfter a feisty Vuelta a Espaa, Richard Carapaz enters the World Championships as the leader of Ecuadors team. A GC rider who has all the capabilities to hang on and even rustlesome feathers on this course, Carapaz is a name to keep in mind when making predictions about Sundays road race.Carapaz showed some real signs last Autumn that hes a strong one-day racer, particularly at this time of year. We also cant overlook his palmares-defining win at the Olympic Games three years ago in Tokyo when Carapaz demonstrated his racecraft in an international event.Theres no Jhonathan Narvez for support in the Ecuadorian squid, but that shouldnt hinder Carapazs chances to taste success this weekend.Rating: 2/5Mattias Skjelmose, DenmarkA.S.O./Billy CeustersThis might be a long shot, but Mattias Skjelmose was on a sharp upward trajectory towards the end of the Vuelta. The Dane was also a standout rider in the previous two editions of the World Championships. Last year, he broke up the peloton in preparation for a big filtration, while the year before he escaped away and almost made it onto the final podium. His riding style suits the Ardennes-esque course too.Dont overlook Denmark.Rating: 1/5Adam Yates, Great BritainUnipublic / CxclingLastly, we have to include Adam Yates of Great Britain. He may have only raced one Classic this year and that was the Muscat Classic in Oman but he is a solid pick for success in a race like this. As a UAE Team Emirates rider, Yates knows Pogaar more than most in the bunch and he might be able to read the situation better than his competitors. The Bury-born rider won the GP Montral last year, a telling sign that he might be a dab hand at these kind of races. He will also be supported by a strong lineup featuring his brother Simon and the recent Tour of Britain winner Stevie Williams, who could also get a surprise result in Zurich.Rating: 1/5Cyclists predictionA.S.O./Billy CeustersIf Tadej Pogaar doesnt win, it will feel like a missed opportunity. Everything is pointing towards a Slovenian victory and a chapter closed on the once unthinkable triple crown feat. For that, I have to back Pogaar for the rainbow bands. Barring incident, hes the man to beat.In the fight for second, Im feeling a strong showing from Remco Evenepoel. I know his recent form at the Tour of Britain wasnt convincing, but he might be the only rider to come close to Pogaar in a long-range attack.Im feeling partial to choosing Marc Hirschi for the podium. His recent results have really impressed me and hell have extra support from the home crowds. e*thirteen Sidekick Hubs Promise to Eliminate Pedal Kickback with Revolutionary Drive System
A quick glance at the state of the mountain bike in 2024 will reveal a lot of high-pivot designs. One of the motivations for the latest crop of high-pivot bikes is their ability to mitigate chain growth and pedal kickback but what if you didnt need an entirely new frame design to do it? What if it was as simple as changing your hub?Thats what the new e*thirteen Sidekick hub promises, well, that and more. By decoupling the drivetrain from the rear wheel when coasting, the Sidekick system claims to reduce drag, noise, and vibration while improving suspension performance by eliminating pedal kickback in nearly all situations.Sounds good? Lets dig in. How Does Sidekick Work?Sidekick starts with a proprietary freehub mechanism that contains an extra pawl. The pawl is on a timed pusher which allows the pawls to retract from the ratchet ring when coasting. Essentially, the drive pawls can slide up and down ramps on the pusher a certain amount before sliding all the way up to engage the drive ring. But until the drive pawls engage the drive ring, the wheel is free to rotate, separated from the drivetrain. For the system to work, there has to be a deadband that allows the wheel to rotate before the pawls engage. Since not all riders and frames will need or want the same amount of deadband, it can be changed without tools from 12 to 15 or 18. BenefitsTo validate the system, e*thirteen has done extensive testing with a team of extremely talented racers including Aaron Gwin, Rnn Dunne, Rmy Mtailler, Fabien Barel, and more. Using a BYB telemetry system with a 1000Hz/sec sampling rate, e*thirteen found that the Sidekick allows riders to spend 7% more time in the mid-stroke of the suspension range (11-70%), while allowing 44% more (cumulative) use of the shock travel in that range. Sidekick was also responsible for 20% less crank movement than a traditional hub, which is where the elimination of pedal kickback comes into play. Claimed Rider Comfort & Speed BenefitsAssists riders to maintain a neutral position on downhillsFlat pedal riders will experience less kickback at the pedals, providing a planted feel with more comfort and controlEliminates drivetrain clatter and chain vibration when descendingAllows for smoother and quieter shiftingWhisper quiet when freewheelingReduced drag equals free rolling speedClaimed Suspension Performance BenefitsEliminates pedal kickback in nearly all situations, giving a chainless feel while descendingNo change is needed in rear shock compression and rebound tuneSimplifies suspension setup window by allowing free suspension movement (no pedal kickback!)More active suspension while brakingSpend up to 50% more time in the mid-stroke (sweet spot) of rear wheel travel giving the feeling of more available travelHow Does Sidekick Compare to Other Products like Ochain?I asked this question to e*thirteen co-owner and engineer, Greg Thrash, since it seemed like two products with a very similar goal. According to Greg, the most significant difference is how the two devices mitigate kickback with Sidekick, the cassette has to rotate through the deadband before the ratchet can engage, so there is zero resistance to chain movement during that period. With O-chain, those movements are resisted by a spring. So fast, dramatic suspension events that feed tension into the chain dont affect the suspensionwith Sidekick, whereas with O-chain, they may be blunted by the springbut are still present.A secondary effect, but probably what you notice the most, is that the normal chain vibration and noise you perceiveas you ride over rough surfaces just isnt there since the cassette can rock on the axle freely both forwardand backward without any intermittentratchet engagements. On top of that the hub is nearly silent. There is a single pawl in the system that makes it work, but it has a very light spring activating it, so you cant hear it operating over the sound of your tires on the ground.Between the super low drag pawl and your suspension working better, your bike seems to roll super fast, corners better, carries more speed; everything seems to work better.Who is Sidekick for? Many of those reasons are also why e*thirteen is marketing this to more than just downhill racers. Advertising it as beneficial for everything from aggressive short-travel trail bikes to full DH bikes, as well as Class 1 ebikes, the Sidekick system has benefits for a wide range of riders. Namely, improved suspension performance, lower drag, less noise, and reduced fatigue. What About High Engagement Hubs? It seems the bike industry has been pushing relentlessly toward higher and faster-engaging hubs. The Sidekick system seems to fly in the face of that, so what gives? According to e*thirteen, while those high-engagement hubs might help you out of a tight technical spot, they wont improve suspension performance. In fact, they might hurt it stating, while coasting at 15 mph (25 kph) a hub with 1-degree engagement can engage over 1000 times per second, leading to significant pedal kickback and poor suspension performance. A hub with 18-degree engagement in the same scenario can engage over 60 times per second, also resulting in a high likelihood of pedal kickback.Hub ConstructionNone of this matters if the hub isnt up to the task, so e*thirteen spent a lot of time obsessing over the details to make Sidekick durable enough to stand up to the worlds top racers. A steel axle ensures the hub is stiff enough and strong enough for World Cup DH abuse, and a captive thread endcap system allows for tool-free cleaning and maintenance. The ratchet ring is replaceable along with all parts for serviceability. At 452g for a Boost hub, the Sidekick hub is on the heavier side, but its likely less added weight than the extra chain and pulley to create a high-pivot frame design. J-Bend hubs will be available to build into your own wheelset, or e*thirteen will offer complete builds with their new Grappler Flux and Sylvan rims as well. Hubs and wheelsets will be offered in all modern sizes and freehubs to fit most bikes and drivetrains.
