G is for Gravel? Grande? New Brompton G Line is big and versatile
CyclistG is for Gravel? Grande? New Brompton G Line is big and versatileThe new Brompton G Line has ripped up the rulebook on what a Brompton bicycle is, scaling up from the classic 16-inch wheels to 20-inch, and with it creating a whole new geometry and ride feel, but it still looks and folds like a Brompton. Its several years in the making and marks a big step for the company Brompton describes it as the brands biggest innovation in 50 years being the very first bike it has produced without 16-inch wheels, and thats not the only big change. It also has disc brakes and has been produced with custom gravel tyres so it can be ridden off-road. There are also major changes on the electric version in both hardware and software. The G Line frame is still made from the same materials with the same processes as every other Brompton and will also be made on the same factory floor in the companys London HQ.It comes in three sizes though all that changes is the stem and seatpost length, it has options for a rack and mudguards, and there have been plenty of accessories produced alongside the bike, including bags.Prices start from 2,399 and weight is claimed to start at 13.9kg for a small without mudguards and rack. What makes a Brompton a Brompton? Tapestry / CyclistThere are other bikes that are the same size, that also fold and dont look that different, but, as the companys website reads, Few bikes can claim to be as recognisable as a Brompton. So can a bigger Brompton still be a Brompton? We want more people to ride Brompton bikes and we accept the limitation of 16-inch wheels on our regular bikes, says Tom Kerr, Bromptons G Line design lead. It will continue to be the best bike for when youre riding around the city, nipping between traffic and jumping on and off the tube. But for everything outside of that when you just want to ride a bike, to enjoy riding and to be able to explore different terrains the world has the G Line is better for that. It bridges the gap between a small wheel bike and a full-size bike, and in todays world space is a premium, so it feels like a big bike but with all the benefits of a Brompton at the same time.Importantly, it definitely still looks like a Brompton and the way the G Line folds is exactly the same as the rest of the fleet. Tapestry / CyclistThe G Lines 20-inch wheels are fitted with custom, tubeless-ready Schwalbe gravel tyres or wide Continental slicks. It has a Shimano Alfine drivetrain with eight hub gears. Theres also hydraulic disc brakes, bigger pedals and wider handlebars with new, ergonomic grips. Theres an electric version too, which uses the same frameset but has a new motor and an improved battery versus previous Brompton e-bikes.The e-bike has 4-speed gearing and is claimed to weigh 19.5kg all in.It folds up to 690mm x 730mm x 402mm compared to the classics 585mm x 565mm x 270mm, and Brompton claims a size small weighs from 13.9kg. With a rack and mudguards, that weight will go up to 14.8kg.Tapestry / CyclistI wanted it to be the bike that everyone could get on with, Kerr says. We want it to appeal to a new Brompton consumer base that didnt previously see Brompton as a legitimate bike for them to ride. That meant coming up with a bike that has the greatest opportunity for versatility. Its walking this very fine line of being a capable bike for the people who need it to be a capable bike, and just being a great bike for people who dont care about that kind of stuff and just want reliable braking and a comfortable ride experience. And what does the G actually stand for? Officially, nothing, its just a letter.Brompton G Line pricingG Line 8-Speed: 2,399G Line 8-Speed with Rack and Mudguards: 2,499G Line 8-Speed with Lights: 2,489G Line 8-Speed with Lights and Rack: 2,589Electric G Line 4 speed: 3,499Find out more at brompton.com Related Posts Brompton P Line Explore 12-speed review Two wheels good: Will Butler-Adams, the man behind Brompton Brompton folding bikes: A full guide to the range Welcome to the fold: behind the scenes at Brompton The post G is for Gravel? Putting The E- In Entitlement
Further to yesterdays post, consider the following quote from the recent New Yorker article about Grant Petersen:Bikes are turning ugly, Petersen recently wrote. I personally have more respect, tons of respect, for somebody who rides around town, to work, for shopping, and for fun, than somebody who does front-flips on handrails with a fifty-foot dropoff on one side. What? Ridiculous!!! Cycling isnt about fun or about usefulness, its about performing death-defying stunts on bicycles of limited utility in order to promote overpriced clothing and overcaffeinated swill at the same time:Heres the video:Eh, frankly when it comes to action-packed videos that combine bikes and trains I prefer ones that feature Bromptons:Now thats what I call suspense.Sometimes you screw the watermelon:And other times it screws you.Speaking of everyday cycling, the smuggies are really pushing the idea that e-bike share trips need to be cheaper, and now a city councilmember is introducing a bill that would cap the cost of an e-Citi Bike trip:Im all for Citi Bike, and its a good thing that people have the option to choose electric ones, but I have not changed my opinion, which is that NOBODY OWES YOU A CHEAP RIDE ON A GODDAMN E-CITI BIKE. Who the hell cares what they cost? E-Citi Bikes didnt even exist until about six years ago. Now suddenly theyre a basic human right and we need a law so that they cost the same as the subway? Well, heres what the councilperson has to say:I promise you that absolutely nobody in New York City is making their major life decisions based entirely on Citi Bikes, electric or otherwise, though I do suspect Lincoln Restler is confusing the way normal people live with the comic subplots of 90s sitcoms:I also promise you that they are not replacing car trips in any meaningful way:In fact, ironically, e-Citi Bikes are causing more traffic because they require a fleet of drivers to service them:Of course in Restlers sitcom universe capping the price of Citi Bike will magically result in the costly construction of a vast underground electrical system that will replace the van fleet. This magic is called public investment, and it will fix everything. Dont believe it? Just look at what great shape the MTA is in! Its doing so wonderfully these same smuggies are telling us that it cant function without congestion pricing:Congestion pricing is the right policy for NYC and provides essential funding for buses and subways. After so many years of advocacy and planning any delay is outrageous. https://t.co/uLuBFhyF5J Lincoln Restler (@LincolnRestler) June 5, 2024I get that its fashionable to believe in a future in which drivers paradoxically abandon their cars and yet somehow fund a motor vehicle-free transportation utopia with their tolls, but Im beginning to wonder if the relative lack of public funding the system receives is the only thing thats saving it.In the meantime, if youre looking for a cheap e-Citi Bike just come to the Bronx and help yourself, theyre absolutely everywhere:Just make sure to bring a spoke wrench.Speaking of combining shopping and fun, I did just that yesterday, and on one of Old Man Petersens bikes to boot:Riding the trails in a populous area often requires you to share the trail with people who are walking dogs:Or, less often, birds:I suppose he just wants to give it some fresh air, but if anything it seems needlessly cruel, like marching a prisoner through the town square:Sure, sometimes when Im riding a bike in this town I too feel like a caged bird:But at least its easy to park.
