National Transport Authority will consider future funding of BallyhaunisActive Travel Scheme
The National Transport Authority has said that it will consider any future funding application for the BallyhaunisActive Travel Scheme, which was previously funded but did not proceed beyond its preliminary design stage.According to a local media report, councillors recently complained about the lack of progress on the project in the town. The NTA has said that it was not satisfied that the project, as proposals, sufficiently addressed the evident need for active travel in the town.Mayo County Council told this website that any new proposal would need to be part of an overall transport plan, and it said that the National Transport Authority has indicated that its main focus of Active Travel investment is, more often than not, in locations with the greatest potential modal shift to active travel.A spokesperson for the National Transport Authority (NTA) said: NTA Active Travel allocations are granted on an annual basis for drawdown within each financial year. As projects progress through the phases additional allocations are provided each year, for works within that year.As the active travel programme has grown and all of the budget is drawn down each year (2022 and 2023) there is no scope to have projects that do not make progress to be retained on the programme, as this uses an allocation that could be used to build infrastructure elsewhere, the NTA spokesperson said.In relation to the Ballyhaunis Active Travel Scheme, the NTA was unable to grant gateway approval to Mayo County Council to further progress the scheme in its presented form (in 2023), as we were not satisfied that the scheme proposals, as then formulated, sufficiently addressed the evident needs. Therefore, the scheme was not sufficiently advanced to provide an allocation for 2024 as it would not be used within the year, the spokesperson added. They added: The NTA is willing to engage further with Mayo County Council on this scheme and should they wish to submit an updated proposal, we will consider it at that stage for a future years allocation.Mayo County Council said that in Q4 of 2021 that it identified a need for Active Travel Infrastructure along the N60 Ballinlough Road inBallyhaunis and then presented this need to the National Transport Authority (NTA).Cathy Mellett, a senior executive engineer in the Active Travel section of the council, said: The Project scope and purpose was discussed and agreed by both parties. Mayo County Council then sought funding for the Project and the NTA approved an allocation of 160,000 under the 2022 Active Travel Grant (now known as the Active Travel Investment Programme) for MO.22.0017BallyhaunisActive Travel Scheme.Mellett said: Due to the volume of work under the Active Travel Programme along with Mayo County Council resources, Scheme phases were not progressed in 2022.In Q4 2022, the Project scope and purpose was again discussed and agreed by Mayo County Council and NTA. Mayo County Council sought funding for the Project for 2023 and the NTA approved an allocation of 110,000 under the 2023 Active Travel Investment Programme. In Q1 2023, Mayo County Council progressed Phase 3 of the Project Preliminary Design. In September 2023 a Draft Preliminary Design was forwarded to the NTA, she said.Mellett said: On October 5th, 2023, Mayo County Council were informed that the National Transport Authority were unable to fully fund all proposed Active Travel projects and had to prioritise certain projects over others in order to remain within its allocated budget. Mayo County Council were informed that every funding application was given due consideration. She said: The NTA explained that the main focus of Active Travel investment is, more often than not, in locations with the greatest potential modal shift to active travel. The NTA determined that it was no longer appropriate to progress MO.22.0017 BallyhaunisActive Travel Scheme in its current format.Active Travel Projects are funded by the National Transport Authority (NTA) under the Active Travel investment programme. For a project to be eligible for funding under this Programme, the Project must be proposed as part of an overall plan e.g. Local Transport Plan, Safe Routes To School (SRTS) Outline Delivery Plan, Active Travel Plan, Mellett said. She added: An Active Travel Plan forBallyhauniswould provide a gateway to funding under the Active Travel Investment Programme.Mayo County Council are currently awaiting direction from the NTA with regards structure and development of Active Travel Plans. The council will continue to engage with the NTA to enable the provision of active travel infrastructure within and aroundBallyhaunisTown.

Review: CEP Compression Socks Go the Distance
When we went to Japan for a couple weeks of cycling, there was a mix of riding styles on the docket, and we had to prepare for everything from sunny heat to lots of rain. CEP offered socks and (full disclosure) helped support our trip, so we dug through their sock drawer to find the best options for long days in the saddle and mixed conditions.CEP Compression is the sporting division of Medi, a German brand primary in the medical-grade compression socks business. Which makes it sound like these things would be tight. Maybe too tight. Fortunately, they turned out to be very comfortable, with their knee-height travel/recovery socks being much lighter than we anticipated, and much easier to pull on and off than some competing brands Ive tried. That said, CEP is not a cycling sock brand. Their current catalog is tailored for running, walking, hiking, or everyday/office use. So we over-shopped to make sure we had something that would work. My sock cube was stuffed, and over two weeks, we tried every possible option to see what worked best for cycling. A few stood out heres what we liked:CEP Hiking, Running & Wool socks are the bestMost of what we rode were the Mid Cut models. Our favorites were the Hiking Light Merino, Run Compression, and Ultralight Mid-Cut socks. The Ultralight (shown above in black, at top of post in white) are the closest thing they make to a pure cycling sock. Its extremely lightweight, making it great for hot weather. And the neutral white, black, gray, and navy color options should work with most cycling kits. If youre the type of rider who uses their socks to add a splash of color to your kit, look elsewhere. CEPs palette is rather reserved. The Reflective Mid-Cut Compression socks (on right in olive green) add two reflective stripes to enhance visibility. Theyre a general-purpose athletic sock that held up well, too, and was one of our faves. In fact, all of their socks held up really well throughout the trip, and continue to do so. Ive worn mine on a number of other road trips, hikes, and rides, and we spent plenty of time in Japan walking around in just our socks. Theyre showing no signs of wear, despite trekking across bridges, tatami mats, gravel, and more. All of their socks have extensive zonal knitting, adding compression here, padding there, and generally being very well thought out for the intended use. For cycling, I wish the cuffs were about one inch higher, but they never looked out of placeand Im kinda tall, so thats just my personal preference. Steve liked them just fine.Because of all that zoned construction, theyre left- and right-specific, which I like. All that knitting does tend to pick up stuff off the ground easily, so check the bottom of your socks before sticking your feet back into your shoes if youve been traipsing around in them. Most of their socks come in normal sizing schemes, but their full-height travel compression socks are based on ankle and calf size, so youll need to do a little measuring for those. We tested their lightweight Infrared Recovery model, which sounded like they were going to be hot, but ended up being very comfortable on the very long flight to and from Asia. The Hiking Light Merino (shown above in Low Cut, also available in Mid Cut) was one of our favorites on the bikepacking part of our trip. Its well padded on the bottom, but thin and light on top. That makes it comfy for hike-a-bikes and off-bike adventures, but without adding bulk or unwanted warmth. The merino wool also stayed stink-free throughout consecutive days of wearing and riding in them. Note that the style has changed slightly since we got ours, but the features are the same. Also note that all links in this story are to the mens versions, but they have womens versions of everything, too.The Run Compression Mid-Cut socks (on right) are the exception to their rule in terms of color. These offer a wide variety of hues with hits of brightness here and there. For kits, we wore all Gore Wear cycling kits and jackets. Surprisingly, we were able to find enough CEP options to match some of Gores latest Spinshift and other kits. So its not like theres no good colors from CEP, but most models are kinda limited to muted options. Almost all models have white, though, and we all know white is the fastest color, soTraining Socks and other stuff we triedSteve tried the Allday Compression Socks, which are very much like dress socks. These actually look the most like a traditional cycling sock from DeFeet or Swiftwick, with solid colors, minimal branding, and a very thin, lightweight knit. But sadly theyre not very good athletic socks mainly because the cuff would sag down after a few miles of spinning. If you want something lightweight and mildly compressive for office work, these should be great for that.I tried the Training Socks for two reasons. First, they seemed like a good all-purpose athletic sock. But second, and more importantly, I really like the way the stripes look on them, and I liked the navy blue color. Other colors also available. These are, indeed, very comfortable socks, but theyre also really thick. They were too warm for the heat of Japans summer riding, and a bit thick for my cycling shoes. I can see these being a go-to in winter and/or with larger-volume shoes, though.Final thoughtsOverall, CEPs range of socks are comfortable, supportive, and have enough variety to meet almost any need in any season. There are plenty of other models that are more specialized (warmth, arch support, etc.) that we didnt try. For cyclists, the Ultralight, Hiking Light Merino, and Reflective Mid Cut socks are probably the best options for most seasons.I also wore the socks while walking and hiking around Japan for another three weeks after the cycling segments, adding in a few of Low-Cut styles. Feature wise, the Mid- and Low-cut options are similar, so if you find one you like, youve got options. I like the durability and support, especially on really long days on our feet. Worth a look if youre trying to pack light for a variety of adventures.CEPcompression.comThe post Review: CEP Compression Socks Go the Distance appeared first on Bikerumor.

New Santa Cruz Hightower v4 29er Blurs Lines with 150mm Travel Jump & Better VPP
This new 4th-generation evolution of the Santa Cruz Hightower is more capable than ever, shifting the 29er all-mountain bike a little further towards enduro, and blurring lines between disciplines a bit further. Just like the recent Bronson overhaul, the new 4th-generation Santa Cruz Hightower gets a completely reshaped VPP for a burlier ride, plus a longer travel boost, too! Sure, it might now be harder than ever to pick between the Bronson and this new Hightower. But 29er fans will be pretty psyched to get a more capable all-mountain bike!2024 Santa Cruz Hightower carbon 29er all-mountain bike updates(Photos/Santa Cruz)If you loved the updates to the latest playful do-it-all-mountain Bronson gen 5, but still feel like you really need big 29 wheels for a faster enduro-tastic ride, this gen4 Santa Cruz Hightower is going to be right up your alley. Now, the Hightower gets the same 150mm rear wheel & 160mm fork travel as the Bronson. And its really just the wheel sizes that set the two bikes apart.Slacker geometry than before and a lower-slung and more efficient VPP suspension design, this is the one bike to rule them all for wagon wheel fanatics. Think of it as a shorter-travel, more realistic Megatower the solution for mountain bikers looking for the mythical do-it-all bike.Whats new?The real big shift here is from the 145/150mm travel of the gen3 29er Hightower to 150mm out back & 160mm up front for the Santa Cruz Hightower gen4, still with 29 wheels. 5mm more at the rear wheel, 10mm more at the front wheel. More travel simply means more capability on the steepest and most technical trails. This is a fast-rolling bike meant to fly over all sorts of terrain. And more travel means more fun- whether on all-day adventure rides or trips to the bikepark. Then, exactly like on the Bronson, Santa Cruz reconfigured the Hightowers long-running VPP (virtual pivot point) suspension layout. By moving the key lower link forward and the main pivot slightly down, Santa Cruz say theyve lowered the bikes anti-squat. The result is a more supple bike that can soak up the big bumps even when you are standing on the pedals and filter out trail chatter even when you are pedaling. Theres also a side benefit that the new bike is approved for coil shocks too, with more room to fit everything low in the frame.Santa Cruz call it all-around better VPP performance for a better all-rounder bikeReduced pedal kickback on square-edge hits. Remains active while pedaling up and across rough, technical terrain. Less anti-squat benefits descending sensitivity due to the reduced pedal kickback associated with standing on the pedals.New 29er All-mountain geometryWith longer travel, the new Hightower also gets slacker geometry at around a 64 headtube angle depending on flip-chip position. The change is relatively small just 0.6 slacker than the previous generation but it pairs to almost 2 steeper seattubes and slightly longer (+5mm) frame Reach to shift weight forward for more control going up and down. The new bike also gets slightly longer chainstays again sticking with size-specific rear center dimensions to provide a consistent balanced ride feel to mountain bikers of all sizes.Tech details5 sizes (S-XXL) with proportional geometryGlovebox secure internal frame storage in the downtube under the bottle cage mountenclosed fully-guided internal cable routing from the sides of the headtubeC carbon frames are compatible with mechanical shiftingnow CC carbon frames only include internal routing for a rear brake & dropper post wireless electronic shift-only2.5 max tire clearance, front & rearBoost 148mm spacingPost Mount brakes with 200mm front /180mm rear rotorsISCG05 chain guide mountsBSA Threaded bottom bracketSanta Cruz UDHIS 1.5 tapered headsetLifetime frame warrantyEasy-to-source, easy-to-service bearings2024 Santa Cruz Hightower Options & availabilityThe new Hightower now comes in two colors Old Growth green and Matte Deep purple and in 6 complete bike build options.
