Zwift Celebrates 10 Years with New Features, Races, Maps, and Events
Has it been 10 years already? Seems like just yesterday we were learning about smart trainers and this new video-game-like training program called Zwift. In those 10 years, there have been a LOT of users logging a LOT of miles on Zwift more than 8 billion kilometers ridden or run, with over 81 billion meters of climbing. Over that time 15 future pro cyclists have been discovered, with more to come. Watopia Expansion! If you love Zwift, you probably love Watopia. Zwifts beloved world was its first, and the home of the most popular route of all time: Tempus Fugit. Now, its about to get even bigger. From now until Stage 5 of the Tour of Watopia on November 24th, you might notice something rising from the ocean, just off the coast of Watopia. The teaser makes them look like some kind of ancient Stonehenge-like structure, but only time will tell!Updated Heads Up DisplayFollowing community feedback, the updated Heads Up Display (HUD) now will allow for customizable metrics including cadence, heart rate, average watts, and w/kg. Runners get an update as well, with a fixed display of a heart rate zone distribution bar, heart rate, and steps per minute. Wahoo KICKR Run owners will also see the new Dynamic Elevation display when utilizing Incline Control.New Challenges and RewardsStarting September 9th, riders will have some optional new challenges including the Cardio Crusher and Route Chaser. These can be accessed via the Challenges section on the Home Screen and can be completed alongside one additional main challenge Everest, Italy, or California.Cardio Crusher Sept 9Catering to a wide range of fitness goals and for time-crunched athletes, the Cardio Crusher Challenge offers five new workouts, all under an hour. Zwifters who complete all five workouts will unlock 250 XP.Route Chaser: The Grade Oct 3Ideal for users looking for a Challenge to earn new badges. Zwifters must complete five routes to complete the challenge, three of which are new Mayan 8 (23.1km with 241m elevation gain), Radio Rendezvous (20.5km with 736m elevation gain), and Power to the Tower (44.7km with 1492m elevation gain).Zwift Racing ScoreZwift claims the new Zwift Racing Score (ZRS?) will revolutionize racing on Zwift making sure youre in the right category from the start. The score dynamically adjusts based on your current fitness and also your performance in races. With improved matchmaking and rewards for strategic racecraft, Zwift Racing Score is designed to elevate the competitive experience. That will come in handy with all the events on the Zwift Racing Calendar:zRacing Monthly Year-round racing with new racing routes landing each month. Zwift Racing League The largest team event in cycling with 2,610 teams participating in the 23/24 Season, the league brings Zwifters together offering 3 rounds consisting of 6 races each between Sept and Feb.Zwift World Series Five races spanning from Sept to Jan, the tailor-made courses offer three tiers of monthly monument racing challenges.Zwift Games Launching in March, the Zwift Championships will return for a second year, offering Zwifters the chance to race for Community and Elite levels with more to be revealed in the coming months.Zwift Garage Updates & Halo BikesSoon, it will be easier than ever to customize your bike in Zwift by completing upgrade challenges to unlock future upgrade purchases with Drops. All bikes will have five stages of upgrades for enhancements in weight reduction, aerodynamics, and lower rolling resistance. There will also be new Halo bikes like the Pinarello Espada with high performance and, thanks to the price, high street cred among the Zwift community. Apparently Only the most brand-loyal Drop Shop customers will be invited to purchase Halo Bikes, with more details to come. Zwift Academy, Camp, and Birthday CelebrationTo celebrate Zwift turning 10, there will be a season-long celebration from Sept. 4 to Dec. 3, including a Big Birthday Party Weekend Sept. 27-30. Zwifts modular frame can convert a smart trainer into a smart bike
Zwift has announced the frameset portion of the Zwift Ride smart bike is now available to purchase independently of a smart trainer for 749.99 / $799.99 / 799.99.This will enable owners of existing smart trainers to upgrade their indoor training setups provided they own a compatible option. The brand has also revealed an updated version of its Zwift Cog singlespeed conversion kit for smart trainers. Dubbed the Zwift Cog v2, and costing 79.99 / $79.99 79.99, it features greater adjustability for quieter running.A number of trainers from third-party manufacturers will be dubbed Zwift Ready, indicating their compatibility with Zwifts new hardware accessories.Solidifying its ongoing relationship with Wahoo, the price of the Zwift Cog-equipped Wahoo Kickr Core Zwift One has been reduced to $499.99.These announcements come alongside a host of seasonal updates and new features celebrating the apps 10-year anniversary.Click through to find out all about the new world expansion, features and content coming to Zwift this winter.Zwift Ride Smart FrameZwift's Ride Smart Frame is now available separately. The Zwift Ride was announced earlier this year, pairing a modular frame with a Wahoo Kickr Core smart trainer and a set of modified Zwift Play controllers. At 1,199.99 / $1,299.99 / 1,299.99, it was priced well below most of the best smart bikes, making it one of the most accessible options available. As hinted at the time, though, you can now buy the frameset portion of the Zwift Ride smart bike independently of a smart trainer.Gear shifts and the Zwift app can be controlled using integrated shifters / controllers on the handlebar. - ZwiftThe idea is that riders can pair the frame and a Zwift Cog with their existing smart trainer to effectively create their own smart bike.As before, the Ride Smart Frame is designed to fit riders from 5ft (152cm) to 6ft 6in (198cm) tall.It costs 799.99 / $799.99 / 799.99, including the new Zwift Cog v2.The Ride Smart Frame is adjustable to accommodate different riders and a number of smart trainers.Zwift says the Ride Smart Frame is compatible with the following Zwift Ready smart trainers:Elite Direto XRVan Rysel D100JetBlack VictoryWahoo Kickr CoreWahoo Kickr V6Zwift HubHaving discontinued the Hub smart trainer earlier this year, as it revealed a partnership with Wahoo, Zwift is now expanding its collaboration with other manufacturers. It says more Zwift Ready trainers will be announced in the coming months.According to the brand, all Zwift Ready trainers will support the apps virtual shifting protocol and will soon be available to purchase with the Zwift Cog v2 pre-installed (bundled with the Zwift Click shifter).Six smart trainers have been designated 'Zwift Ready'. - ZwiftAlthough the Zwift Ride Smart Frame may be physically compatible with other smart trainers, its worth noting that unless the trainer supports Zwifts virtual shifting protocol, youd be stuck with only one gear (because it uses a singlespeed drivetrain).Additionally, Zwift says the Ride Smart Frame fits Wahoos Kickr Move smart trainer, but can only be used with the trainers signature movement locked out.Zwift Cog v2The Zwift Cog v2 can be indexed to reduce chain noise. - ZwiftFollowing on from its original singlespeed smart trainer conversion kit, Zwift has announced the Cog v2.The v2 Cog differs from the original version in two ways it offers integrated indexing adjustments and updated graphics. The indexing is designed to help reduce drivetrain noise, by adjusting the Cog v2s singlespeed sprocket placement on the freehub for better alignment with your bikes chain. The slightly increased noise level compared to the narrow, profiled teeth of modern bike cassettes was one of the downsides we noted in our Zwift Cog first look in December 2023 (although we also noted it made up for this somewhat by reducing noise from gear shifts).Zwift has also given the Cog v2 new coloured graphics. - ZwiftThe updated Zwift orange graphics help it stand out a bit more. Zwift has also given a colour refresh to the Click virtual shifting remote, with the two buttons now orange and blue. This doesnt have any effect on functionality, but might make it easier to ensure you hit the right button at a glance when deep into a hard Zwift workout or race. The Zwift Cog v2 is compatible with a wide range of drivetrains. - ZwiftThe Zwift Cog v2 is available as an upgrade kit for compatible Zwift Ready smart trainers and costs 79.99 / $79.99 / 79.99.As with the original Cog, Zwift says the Cog v2 is compatible with almost any 8- to 12-speed bike.Wahoo Kickr Core Zwift One drops in price (with a catch)The Wahoo Kickr Core Zwift One smart trainer has dropped in price, but only if you buy it without a Zwift subscription. - WahooZwift has also announced the Wahoo Kickr Core Zwift One is now available at a lower price of 449.99 / $499.99 / 499.99, down from 579.99 / $599.99 / 599.99.Its worth noting this option doesnt include a years subscription to Zwift (which would normally cost 179.99 / $179.99 / 179.99), though, which is required to make the most of this trainer in its stock setup. This is because the Zwift Cog and Zwift Click are only compatible with the Zwift app, as things stand. That said, the Zwift Cog can be disassembled and a standard cassette installed in its place, should a rider wish to use the trainer with a different app.Likewise, Zwift reasons that riders with an active subscription to the app may not wish to pay extra for something they already have.

4 Vuelta a Espaa storylines to follow in the final week
Cyclist4 Vuelta a Espaa storylines to follow in the final weekWith only a few days of racing to go in the 2024 Vuelta a Espaa, it couldnt be much closer at the top of the GC table. After a gutsy defence of his red jersey on the slopes of the Covadonga, Ben OConnor now leads Primo Rogli by a margin of just five seconds. As the race speeds towards its conclusion in Madrid, here are four storylines to follow:The podium fightUnipublic/Cxcling/Tony BaixauliThis Vuelta is certainly entertaining with a handful of stages still to go. After OConnor launched his blistering solo breakaway to work his way into the maillot rojo on Stage 6, he has so far defended it heroically from the stampeding Rogli. It hasnt been easy. Rogli has shaken off a 20sec time penalty received for drafting after Stage 15 and is licking his lips at the chance to jump away once more. Hell have plenty of opportunities and is bolstered by his strong teammates, especially Aleksandr Vlasov, who are supporting him far more compared to OConnor, who often seems isolated from his squad. The race continues in the high mountains over the remainder of the third week, where Rogli is in his element and where he will aim to win the red jersey for the fourth time in his career. His chances look high and even more so with the individual time-trial on the last day considering the lack of time-trialling quality in the rest of the top ten.Its very close for third place too. Enric Mas, Richard Carapaz and Mikel Landa all sit within less than a minute of each other, and have been attacking each other relentlessly at this Vuelta and will continue to do so. And theres plenty of time for one of them to crack the top two if OConnor continues to lose time. After 16 stages, three riders sit within one minute of each other. Carlos Rodrguez has moved back into the white jersey, with Lidl-Treks Mattias Skjelmose breathing down his neck only 7sec behind and Roglis young teammate Florian Lipowitz just 34sec back. These three riders have occupied the top three spots in the classification since Antonio Tiberis abandonment with heat stroke during Stage 9. A chasm then opens to the rest, with Israel-Premier Techs Matthew Riccitello sitting fourth, over 53 minutes behind Rodrguez.Ineos Grenadiers entered the Vuelta with Rodrguez and Thymen Arensman as co-leaders. Arensman abandoned with Covid-19 prior to Stage 11 and Rodrguez sits a strong seventh in the general classification, 3min 56sec down on current race leader OConnor. While he was distanced from the favourites early on the slopes of the Covadonga, he battled on to finish only 11sec behind. Its this kind of resilience that has seen him finish in the top seven of every Grand Tour hes ridden. He wont let the youth classification lead slip without a fight. But Skjelmose is equally determined. He just bunny-hopped Lipowitz in the standings after a particularly strong performance on Lagos de Covadonga and his strengths lie in the sort of terrain we have ahead of us, particularly with the final stage individual time-trial around Madrid, a discipline in which he is the Danish National Champion. Hes also experienced at the WorldTour level, having already won a staggering amount of youth classifications as well as the overall at last years Tour de Suisse.Lipowitz meanwhile has enjoyed four days in the white jersey since the start of the Vuelta. He was stable in second place for a while but Skjelmose has been steadily gaining time on him, largely helped by the brutally steep summit finish to Cuitu Negru on Stage 15.Are the mountains and points classifications over?At the start of Stage 16, Wout van Aert held both the points and mountains jerseys. The mountains classification was shaping up to be a particularly entertaining fight, with both Van Aert and UAEs Jay Vine on the same number of points. Van Aert was an attacking force throughout the day, increasing his lead, but a painful crash on one of the descents forced him to abandon.Vine now leads the mountains classification by 14 points from teammate Marc Soler. Theres plenty more points up for grabs over the next few days but it seems likely the jersey will, at the very least, stay within the team.As for the points classification, the green jersey is now on the shoulders of Kaden Groves. The Alpecin-Deceuninck rider leads the classification by a mammoth 87 points from Astana Qazaqstans Harold Tejada. Barring disaster, Groves is locked in to win it.What cant Max Poole do?Tim de Waele/Getty ImagesMax Poole is having an exceptional Vuelta. The young Brit started with a top ten on Stage 7, topped that with a third place on Stage 11 and went one better the next day with a second place on Stage 12.Then on the epic stage to Lagos de Covadonga, he made the breakaway, fought alongside Soler and Filippo Zana, and finished a fine third place on the day.The DSM-Firmenich-PostNL squad came into this race with Poole as their man for the general classification, but given hes just 21 there was little pressure on him to get results. Poole has risen to the task impressively, and the Vuelta has provided an environment for him to thrive. He has been one of the standout riders on his Grand Tour debut and is an exciting prospect for the future. Expect more surprises from him as the race continues. For more, visit our Vuelta a Espaa hub page.
