New Surly Moonlander 'floats' over terrain with 6.2in tyres and Pinion gearbox
Surly has updated its Moonlander expedition bike with a Pinion gearbox, wider tyres and increased ground clearance. The bike is designed to float over a variety of terrain thanks to its 24x6.2in tyres. These have been developed to be the widest possible platform without creating a new hub and standard or exceeding acceptable Q-factor tolerances.Surly says the Moonlander is designed for rocky shorelines, sand, snow and "landscape not yet ridden".Pricing is set at 4,699.99 for a complete build, with the Moonlander Frameset, featuring a Pinion gearbox, available in some territories.Shoot for the moonThe Moonlander certainly has a lunar-exploring aesthetic. - SurlyThe Moonlanders frame is made from Surlys Chromoly Steel and features a small front triangle to lower standover height and make it easier to mount when riding tough terrain. The bike has been designed to navigate all types of terrain, from rock crawling to sand surfing. - SurlySurly says it has given the bike a longer rear triangle to increase stability, and balance the weight between the front and rear axles for better riding characteristics. The bottom bracket height has been increased to allow for better ground clearance, enabling you to clear more obstacles and hit your crank arms less in rocky terrain.Centring the weight low in the bottom bracket area should improve handling characteristics. - SurlyBuried in the bottom bracket area is a Pinion C1.9 XR 9-speed Gearbox, which uses a sealed set of gears similar to those found in automobiles.Gearboxes are popular with expedition riders for many reasons, with durability, ease of maintenance and longevity often cited as benefits over traditional derailleur designs.Fat tyres are designed to be run at low pressures and conform to the ground below. - SurlyThis is the first time Surly has integrated a Pinion system into one of its frames, with the brand saying the drivetrain protects the gears when travelling through inhospitable terrain.Gearboxes also enable you to use a belt drive, although Surly has specced the Moonlander with a chain.Wider than everThese are some of the widest bike tyres on the market. - SurlySurly has developed the new Moolander alongside the Molenda tyre and Clown Royal rim.The bike has the same Q-factor as the brand's Ice Cream Truck. The Moonlander will also fit 26x5.1in, 27.5x4.8in and 29x3in tyres for those looking to ride trails a little more paved. The front triangle will take a single water bottle on the SM, two on the MD and three on the LG / XL. - SurlyAs with most modern adventure bikes, the Moonlander features a host of pack mounts all over the frame, with studs featuring on nearly every tube.Rack and fender mounts, as well as accessory mounts on both fork blades, should provide plenty of carrying capacity.Surly offers the Moonlander in four sizes: SM, MD, LG and XL, each featuring a head tube angle of 68.5 degrees two degrees slacker than the previous model. All sizes share the same effective seat tube angle of 73 degrees, while the reach measurement for a size-large bike is 443.9mm.Surly Moonlander spec and price detailsSurly MoonlanderOnly one spec level will be available for the Moonlander. - SurlyFork: Surly Chromoly SteelDrivetrain: Pinion C1.9 XR 9-speed GearboxSaddle: WTB Volt MediumWheels: Surly Clown Royal 24inx100mmTyres: Surly Molenda, 24x6.2inPrice: 4,699.99Surly Moonlander FramesetFork: Surly Chromoly SteelDrivetrain: Pinion C1.9 XR 9-speed Gearbox

Limerick council says it is working on detailed design of South Circular Road project
Residents say they are experiencing aggression from motorists on the road to be calmed by the project.Limerick City and County Council has told this website that it is working on the detailed design of South Circular Road project and that it will tender for the construction work once the design work is finished. A revised design for the project was agreed upon in February 2023; it included retaining more parking by reducing traffic on a section of the project using filtered permeability. At the time, the council said that construction would be expedited to start in 2024.However, while the council was not definitive on the start date for the construction this week, it is understood that finishing the detailed design and then tendering for the project will likely delay the start of construction until 2025.IrishCycle.com asked the council questions after residents complained that motorists had been acting dangerously and aggressively on the road.Eoin Buckley, tweeted: Another 12 months (!) on with no change on the South Circular Road. Didnt take long for an impatient motorist to rev/tailgate me and my 9-year old all along by Mary Immaculate and then beep continuously because I stopped at the zebra crossing to let a child cross.Aine Farrell wrote: Another school year starts with no changes to South Circular Road. Twice in the past 12 months, I was nearly knocked off my bike, and my daughter was narrowly missed by a speeding driver who ignored the pedestrian crossing (a common occurrence). Why is the South Circular Road active travel scheme taking so long?A spokesperson for Limerick City and County Council said: A Part 8 planning application for theSouthCircularRoadActive Travel Scheme was approved by elected members of the Metropolitan District of Limerick in February 2023. The Scheme will be approximately 2.6km in length.Since the Scheme was approved, work on Detailed Design has been ongoing from engineering staff within the Active Travel Limerick team via assistance from the project consultants. Given the long and complex nature of the project, the Detailed Design process is taking time, the spokesperson said. The council said that each junction of the scheme is being assessed individually in respect of the detailed design process and that it is also working on the detailed design for kerbs, footways, paved areas, and landscaping.Limerick City and County Council said that radar counters have been installed to measure mobility levels in the area and that this data is continuing to be gathered and analysed by the team and is informing the Detailed Design process. It said that the project was allocated 500,000 from the National Transport Authority in 2024 and that, as the project progresses, the allocation is expected to be larger next year. The councils spokesperson added: It is anticipated that construction on the project will begin when this Detailed Design process is completed and following the outcome of a tender process for a construction contractor.

MADE Show 2024 Video: All the Details on Madrone Cycles Modular Rear Derailleur
Madrone Cycles has been busy since we first caught up with them earlier this year at Sea Otter. Madrone is still offering SRAM AXS rebuild kits, but its their own prototype rear derailleur that has improved substantially since we last saw it. Now on the Gen 2 prototype, the derailleur is modular to allow it to work with 10, 11, 12, or 13-speed cassettes, different shifters, and even a UDH Direct-Mount or standard derailleur hanger mount. Madrone founder Aaron Bland walks us through the details. madronecycles.comThe post MADE Show 2024 Video: All the Details on Madrone Cycles Modular Rear Derailleur appeared first on Bikerumor.

A World Of Change Experiencing South Americas Dynamic Environments On Two Wheels
UPDATED September 3, 2024BY Guest AuthorINSouth American Epic no comments A World Of Change Experiencing South Americas Dynamic Environments On Two WheelsBenjamin Levin is the Content Creator on the 2024 South American Epic Cycling Expedition.Cycling across South America for five and a half months, from the Amazon rainforest to the icy peaks of Patagonia, is bound to bring with it a remarkable variety of experiences. Even with the grand expectations set for the South American Epic (one of TDA Global Cyclings four epics trips that traverse entire continents the others being Tour dAfrique, Silk Route & North American Epic), a journey that spans six countries from Cartagena, Colombia to Ushuaia, Argentinaparticipants have found themselves continually surprised by the dramatic changes they encounter, not only on a large scale, country to country, but also on a more granular level as well, during a single day. This adventure, designed to showcase some of the continents most breathtaking and remote locations, often feels like it is traveling through entirely different countries within a single day. The immense variety of environments, cultures, and challenges keeps riders on their toes and adds an unpredictable, yet exhilarating dimension to the adventure.Broad country to country shifts are what we expected and as the trip developed, they became quite apparent. Beginning in the Colombian Caribbean, it was hot and humid. Seriously hot and humid. Cycling in the tropical heat, the oppressive humidity always lying upon you was part of what I signed up for, but also difficult, John Benoit proclaimed as we chatted in Medellin, Colombia during the first weeks of the trip. There were a few nights at the beginning where when simply lying in your tent, you would drip sweat (as Shanny described earlier in his blog). Quite the juxtaposition to sleeping at 4000 meters in Ecuador where lying in your tent, you could not breath through your nose because you would not take in enough oxygen. Both places are stunning and both offer immensely different challenges. We knew these macroscopic changes would take place. Yet, we may not have known just how grand they would be.On the other hand, we had less of an idea of how our experiences would change on a granular scale, within a day. Talking to our tour leader Carolina in Cartagena, Colombia, she warned me that one of the most difficult aspects of this trip was going to be the change in climate and environment within a short period of time. I feel like the biggest challenge for the riders will be to deal with the variation of weather, especially during the same day when they will have all sorts of climates and temperatures, said Carolina, a day before the tour kicked off. Throughout the entirety of the trip this has proved to be true. Often we are in 4 very different places in one day. By starting at a low elevation in a big city, then going through little towns on rough back roads and into national parks, the geography changes, the climate changes, the vegetation changes exclaimed Mike Mossing, one of our Cartagena to Ushuaia riders. These changes present challenges that your typical cycling tour does not. Jim Fowler told me that he and a lot of the other riders carry a wide range of gear on their bikes because of the wide range of climates potentially faced during a single ride. We carry a couple layers for warmth and of course the ability to not wear them to keep cool That is really the only way to do it. It means you carry a bit more weight but its part of an epic adventure. The diversity of landscape on this trip does not solely present itself as a challenge to the riders. It also makes for some of the most incredible scenery you can imagine. It is stunning, within just a few kilometres weve gone from a country side where youre seeing rice paddies to totally aridity and then the next day, after climbing just a few kilometres youre back to green lush vegetation, noted Jim.Everyone knew that they signed up to see the dunes in Peru, the kingdom of the Amazon in Ecuador, and the Colombian Andes. The scope, scenery, and variety of landscape have indeed lived up to promise that it would be epic and at times otherworldly. However, what many of us did not anticipate was the sheer diversity of ecosystems, ways of life, and cycling terrain that we would encounter in short periods of time.RELATEDTOURSouth American EpicThis challenging expedition offers you the best opportunity to explore the vastness and diversity of South America by bike. Surly Moonlander Takes Off with 24 x 6.2 Tires and Pinion Gearbox!
Just when you thought fat bikes couldnt get any bigger, Surly swoops in with a new Moonlander. Now, this is not your typical Moonlander. Sure, the model was known as Surlys biggest fat tire bike at a time when 4 was still considered large, but this is different for a few reasons.24 x 6.2 Tires! The biggest (literally) of these may be the all-new 24 x 6.2 Surly Molenda Tires. Yes, you read that right. Surly downsized the rim, and upsized the tire for even more extreme flotation on all terrain. Surly states that the Moonlander frame can also roll on 26 x 5.1, 27.5 x 4.8, and 29 x 3 tires. Molenda tires feature a 2-ply 60 tpi casing that is tubeless ready, and have a claimed weight of 2200 2300g and will cost $150 each.If you dont want to run tubeless, youll need to use Surlys new TPU inner tube in the matching 24 x 6.2 size that supports low pressures (2-10psi). The inner tubes alone are $49 a piece, but given the size that doesnt seem too bad considering regular TPU inner tubes are pushing $30-40.To mount those gargantuan Molenda tires, Surly has also introduced a new 24 x 100mm Clown Royal Rim. The 32h rim requires the use of the Surly 24 Nylon rim strip, and will be available aftermarket to build custom wheels. Rims will run $280 each with another $8 for the rim strip. One of the goals of the Moonlander project was to create a fat bike with the largest tire footprint possible without creating any new standards or q-factor that was unrideable. To that effect, the Moonlander uses standard 197 x 12mm hubs front and rear (rear hubs on both), and has the same q-factor as the existing Ice Cream Truck. To accomplish that, the Moonlander uses a longer rear end which allows the proper tire/chain/crank clearance while also increasing stability. Surly claims that the Moonlander looks, feels, and rides like a normal bike in spite of the comically wide tires.A Gearbox? While the 100% Surly Chromoly steel frame is familiar, the drivetrain is decidedly not at least for Surly. On a bike like the Moonlander, weight and efficiency play second and third fiddle to reliability in extreme conditions. Thats why Surly opted for the Pinion 9-speed gearbox instead of a traditional derailleur system. This is Surlys first-ever use of the Pinion system, citing that it protects the drivetrain from inhospitable conditions and offers higher ground clearance than the typical fat bike thanks to a higher BB shell. GeometryOffered in four sizes from S-XL, the frames have a smaller front triangle for better standover and easier on/off. Those front triangles can house one water bottle for small frames, two on the medium, and 3 on L/XL frames. Youll also find accessory mounts on the fork blades, and plenty of mounts for racks, fenders, and more. The frames are internal dropper post compatible and run a 30.9mm post. How much does it weigh?Complete weight is claimed to be about 45 lbs for a medium frame. Just the frameset alone (frame, fork, collar, axles) is 12lbs, 4oz. Not light. But look at it!Pricing & Availability Pricing is set at $4,199 for the complete bike and $1,199 for the frameset (which doesnt appear to include the gearbox). Moonlanders are available for order on Surlys website, including the option to ship to your home from a participating dealer close to you.
