The Girona Adventure: Gravel, Castles, and Why We Train - SGRAIL100
Sometimes the best adventures aren't about chasing personal bests. They are about the places you discover and the people you share them with.Eight lads, eight gravel bikes, and a trip to Catalunya for a little swimming, cycling, running, and plenty of laughs. What could possibly go wrong?SGRAIL 100: A Triathlon With a TwistCreated by triathlon legend Jan Frodeno, SGRAIL 100 offers something a little different from your traditional race. It features:A 1.5km open water swim88km of rugged gravel ridingA 10.8km trail runAll of this is set against the spectacular coastline and rolling hills around Girona, Spain. The swim went smoothly, but it was quickly followed by some seriously challenging gravel terrain. We tackled rocky climbs, technical descents, and breathtaking coastal views. There were even a few steep sections where pushing the bike was considerably more sensible than riding it!The trail run was our final challenge. Our decision to wear matching Hawaiian shirts probably gave away the fact that we weren't taking our finishing times too seriously. It was a brilliant event with a fantastic atmosphere and a real celebration of endurance sport. Both Fusion athletes, Hugh and Leslie, put their training to good use and enjoyed a cracking day out on the course. The Adventure Didn't Stop at the Finish LineWith SGRAIL completed, the race was over but the trip was just beginning. We spent the next four days bikepacking around the Girona countryside with minimal luggage, gravel bikes, and a rough plan to explore as much as possible. Here were a few highlights from the road:Banyoles: A beautiful, relaxed town with a stunning lake.Rocacorba: A legendary cycling climb and, for me, the biggest climb I've tackled to date. It was a proper challenge, but worth every single pedal stroke. The Red Gravel Trails: Mile after mile of quiet tracks, deep forests, and epic mountain backdrops. Girona really is a playground for anyone who loves riding a bike.Just when we thought the trip couldn't get much better, our final night's accommodation turned out to be a spectacular restored castle-like property. It wasn't exactly your typical, rugged bikepacking digs, but it was a fitting way to finish an unforgettable trip.More Than Just TrainingBy the end of the week, there were plenty of tired legs, sore backsides, countless coffee stops, and questionable navigation decisions. We left with stories that will no doubt be retold for years to come. But that's exactly what makes these trips special. At Fusion Endurance, we're passionate about helping athletes become fitter, stronger, and more resilient. We don't just do this to help you chase race times. We do it so you have the fitness and confidence to say yes to adventures just like this one.Sometimes the greatest reward from all those hours of training isn't a PB or a medal. It's being able to explore incredible places, take on new challenges, and share the experience with great mates.SGRAIL 100 brought us to Girona. The adventure that followed made the trip unforgettable.Would we go back...?...In a heartbeat.Andy Fusion Endurance
