2027 Tour de France route revealed: beefed-up solo time-trial kilometres and more climbing dominate
A pumped-up volume of individual time-trial kilometres was the headline act at the launch of the 2027 Tour de France in Paris on Thursday. For years, race director Christian Prudhomme, who celebrates 20 years in the hot seat in 2027, has overseen a trend of ever-fewer time-trial kilometres in a bid to make the racing more dynamic and unpredictable. But the hegemony of Tadej Pogaar, whos shown an insatiable appetite for winning on all terrain, could see something of a reversal for 2027. In 2027 Tadej Pogacar will bid to become the first (official) rider to need two hands to tally his Tour de France wins. Getty Images 71 largely flat kilometres of time trialling, across two stages (7 and 16) will test the Slovenian in new ways, and give him food for thought. Remco Evenepoel, one of historys time-trial greats, will spy an opening. It's the most solo TT kilometres since the 2012 route (101km), which helped tee up Bradley Wiggins' win.The traditional Paris launch, attended by past greats such as Mark Cavendish, Chris Froome and Bernard Thvenet but few of the current crop of favourites, saw Prudhomme and Marion Rousse, director of the Tour de France Femmes avec Zwift, drop their respective routes for next summer. For those who had followed route rumours in recent weeks, particularly for the more frequently speculated mens route, there were few surprises on offer at todays official launch. The mens race will tackle 3,479km and 53,000m of elevation, with only three summit finishes but more climbing overall than four of the past five tours.A big part of that is thanks to the already well-trailed British Grand Depart, which will tackle hills through the Scottish Borders, Lake District, Pennines and mid-Wales as it makes its way across all three nations of Britain. The 2027 Tour de France stage 2 route. After an additional rest day on the first Monday of the race, the race restarts in France with a Cherbourg loop. A punchy 1km climb 10km from the finish will be a thorough test for those hoping to contest a sprint. The race then makes its way east, with the first 38km solo time trial on stage 7 between Blois and Chambord. The stage 7 route. Thats followed immediately by the longest stage (224km) a testing route with five classified climbs between Bourges and Le Creusot then the first mountain stage, in the Jura, that finishes atop Grand Colombier. The Annecy rest day that follows is a calm before two more mountain stages on 10 and 11; the first includes two ascents of the Cote de Domancy before a finish in Sallanches, host of the 2027 World Road Races, the second is 150km between Cluses and Les Saisies ski resort. This latter route will also host the 2027 L'Etape du Tour mass-participation event. Stage 11 is a mountain stage. A period of welcome calm will envelope the general classification fight on stages 12 and 13, before another mountain stage on 14 between Montpellier and Mende. This 199km, 4,300m stage features the stunning Cirque de Navacelles canyon in the southern edge of the Massif Central. The third and final rest day comes before another crucial day, stage 16s 33km solo TT in Toulouse. The route is flat-ish only 200m over the full course but one short, steep climb (800m at 12.5%) in the second half will complicate matters. Stage 16 sees Toulouse host a solo time trial. Then it's immediately onto the most severe mountain test of the race, stage 18s route from Pau to the summit of the Col de Portet. The climb, a turn-off from the climb between Saint-Lary-Soulon and the Pla dAdet ski resort, was first used in 2018 and again in 2021. The summit finish is preceded by ascents of the Soulor, Tourmalet and Hourquette dAncizan a truly monstrous day on the bike. Stage 18 provides the hardest climbing challenge. Stage 19 is the final day in the mountains, taking place in the febrile terrain of the Basque Country, and the Col de Marie Blanque 20km from the finish offers a short but severe final test before the Laruns finish.A transitional stage 20 to Libourne gives the sprinters succour after the mountain mayhem, before the finale in Paris.Despite rumours, the Montmartre climb circuit is retained. This summer, it produced a finish for the ages between Mathieu van der Poel and Tadej Pogaar (and a rampaging peloton behind the pair). Its reveal during the presentation got the biggest cheer of the day.
