Paul Seixas, 20, becomes youngest ever winner of Il Lombardia as Ben Healy takes 12th
Il Lombardia 2026 ResultSaturday 10 October Bergamo Como 239kmPaul Seixas wins solo 5:49:28 41.033km/hBen Healy 12th at 1:20 Eddie Dunbar DNF 114 of 174 finishedPaul Seixas won the 120th Il Lombardia alone in Como on Saturday, attacking on Civiglio with 18 kilometres to go and holding off Enric Mas by 48 seconds. At 20 years and 16 days, the Frenchman is the youngest winner in the races history. He takes the record from Giovanni Gerbi, who won the very first edition in 1905 aged 20 years, five months and eight days. Only three riders have won a Monument younger Victor Fastr and Georges Ronsse at LigeBastogneLige and Rik Van Steenbergen at the Tour of Flanders, all Belgians.Giulio Ciccone took third at 1:05, his second podium in six days after European Championship silver in enur. Remco Evenepoel won the sprint for fourth from the chasing group at 1:20, with Brandon McNulty fifth on the same time.Seixas is the first French winner of Lombardia since Thibaut Pinot in 2018, and the first Frenchman to win any Monument since Julian Alaphilippe at MilanSan Remo in 2019. It is also the first Monument for Decathlon CMA CGM in the teams 34-year history. How it was wonThe race went from the gun at 11:15 with 174 starters. Fourteen riders built the days break on and after the Selvino: Michael Leonard, Maxime Decomble, Ben OConnor, Andrea Mifsud and Johannes Kulset went at 29km, Antonio Tiberi, George Bennett, Sylvain Moniquet, Fausto Masnada, Pau Mart and Gijs Leemreize joined them at 32km, Louis Vervaeke at 38km, and Julien Bernard and Victor Campenaerts at 47km. Their lead peaked at 2:46 at 105km.The Madonna del Ghisallo, which starts at 170km, split the break. Eight were left at the front, and Moniquet led them over the chapel at the summit. Behind, McNulty, Quinn Simmons, Matteo Jorgenson and Christian Scaroni went clear of the bunch near the top and crossed 47 seconds down, picking up Masnada on the way. They were caught at 198km.The break still had 1:05 with 37 kilometres to go, but that came down quickly on the finishing circuit. It was 46 seconds on the first ascent of San Fermo della Battaglia and 23 seconds with 20km to go, and the last of the escapees were caught at 220km.Civiglio decided it, as the route suggested it might: 4.2 kilometres at 9.7%, the hardest climb on the circuit. Seixas had planned to attack there but went earlier than intended, about two kilometres up, because the pace was lower than he expected. At the summit, 222km, he led Ciccone and Mas by 23 seconds, with Pidcock and Filippo Zana at 38 seconds and Evenepoels group at 50.The gap grew all the way to the line. It was 38 seconds with eight kilometres left. Soon after, Mas, wary of Ciccones sprint, attacked him and went on alone; Ciccone rode the finale on his own for third. Mas was 46 seconds down at the flamme rouge and 48 at the finish. The chasing group of nine came in at 1:20, where Evenepoel led McNulty, Pidcock, Pello Bilbao, Scaroni, Zana, Mathys Rondel and Ramses Debruyne home, with Ben Healy 12th.It was a race of attrition: only 114 of the 174 starters finished. What they saidThe plan was to attack on Civiglio, I just did it a bit before I wanted to, only 2km after the start of the climb, because I expected a higher pace, Seixas said. I was hoping to crest in first position with at least 15 seconds lead so nobody could catch me. I knew the rest of the course was nice for one man solo. It was exactly the type of effort I could manage alone. I didnt take any risk in the downhill. Its beautiful and crazy to win a Monument. I dont really care about being the youngest winner, I just care about winning. I hope itll be inspiring for young riders from my country as much as Thibaut Pinots win eight years ago was inspiring for me. I skipped the European championships because I wanted to win here. It makes it an awesome second pro season.Mas, who won the Vuelta a Espaa a month ago, matched his second place here in 2022. Today, Paul was stronger than us, he said. I knew Giulio Ciccone was a very fast rider in the sprint so I had to attack him. The world championships were a disaster for me but I recovered. I felt better at the Tre Valli Varesine so I came to Il Lombardia with confidence.Ciccone, third here for the second time after 2024, admitted he paid for trying to go with Seixas. I was suffering a lot on the second last climb, he said. Paul Seixas rode super fast up Civiglio and I made a small mistake to try and follow him. Hes super strong. The way he won this Monument, he deserves it. Its my third podium in a Monument, my second here. The first place would have been better but I can be happy.By the numbersSeixas is the 80th different winner in 120 editions, and was the youngest rider on the start line.France now has 13 Lombardia wins from ten riders Garrigou, Plissier, Bobet, Darrigade, Hinault, Mottet, Delion, Jalabert, Pinot and Seixas.Dorian Godon won GranPiemonte this week, making it only the second year French riders have won both races, after Christian Jourdan and Bernard Hinault.Sylvain Moniquet took the Pier Luigi Todisco award, presented by La Gazzetta dello Sport, for being first over the Madonna del Ghisallo.Next: the Roc dAzurSeixas is not finished yet. Less than 24 hours after his win in Como he swaps to a mountain bike for the 55km Roc dAzur in Frjus on Sunday morning, starting at 08:15 (07:15 Irish time), the last race of his season. Bruno Armirail, the European time trial silver medallist, is also entered.Irish ridersBen Healy finished 12th, in the chasing group that came in 1:20 behind Seixas. He followed the favourites across the Ghisallo and onto the finishing circuit, and stayed with them over Civiglio and San Fermo.Eddie Dunbar did not finish. He was one of 60 riders to abandon, among them his Pinarello-Q36.5 teammates Marcel Camprub, Mark Donovan and Quinten Hermans.IRLIrish RidersIl Lombardia 202612Ben HEALY (61)EF
