Im happy with my position councillor says when challenged by a local advocate.A Galway councillor, Cllr Shane Forde (Fine Gael), has vowed to block any future project to make roads safer for pedestrians and cyclists while hes still on the council.This morning he posted a photo of the September traffic on Castlepark Road on Facebook, and said: This is the direct result of multiple traffic lights on the new scheme and the taking away of the slip lane at ATU. Absolute disaster.In the comments section, David Corley, a Galway-based active travel and accessibility advocate, said: Much safer for pedestrians and cyclists now I look forward to seeing more of this safe infrastructure being rolled out across the city.Cllr Shane Forde said: You wont see anymore of it in Galway City East during my time on the council.Another member of the public said: Will there be a push back on the Monivea road? in reference to the Monivea Road (East) Active Travel Scheme, which is currently at its public consultation review stage. Cllr Forde said: Yes, and Ill be leading the charge.Other views on the page range from ripping the active travel project out to adjusting the traffic light sequence. In further comment, Corley said: Imagine a politician blocking safe travel infrastructure for children. What a bizarre stance to take, especially in light of the escalation in road deaths and serious injuriesCllr Forde replied: Im happy with my position. I think you believe you are the only parent in the world who worries about kids and safe infrastructure. I offered to canvas 100 houses with you and you can pick the homes around Ballybane, Ballybrit and Castlepark and see if anyone agrees with your perspective.He added: Im for active travel that includes Bus priority lanes and if it does not include this then our community doesnt want it.The idea that bus lanes have to be included in all active travel projects has been recurring in the area. In the consultation pages for the Monivea Road (East) Active Travel Scheme, Galway City Council has a Q&A including Why is no bus lane included? The councils response is: This project will also deliver upgraded facilities at all existing bus stops along the route. It will not include any bus lane, as this would require the compulsory purchase of properties including lands owned by local businesses and peoples front gardens.The Monivea Roadproject is planned to run the length of the road and links the new cycle paths on the Ballybane Road and Castlepark Road with the underpass to Parkmore Road.
