Jump to the Irish ridersBarry rode clear to win alone in 4:17:35 at an average of 40.58km/h after thirteen laps of the Mount Royal circuit, 53 seconds ahead of Hctor lvarez of Spain, who took silver from Jesper Stiansen and Aubin Sparfel on the same time.It is a result with some family history behind it. Barrys mother, Dede Demet-Barry, won the junior womens road race world title in 1989, and his father Michael Barry rode for Canada, finishing seventh in the elite road race at the 2003 championships. Liam OBrien was 84th at 13:30 and David Gaffney 90th at 16:00, both riding their first events of the championships.The four rode together at the head of the main bunch for several laps, controlling the pace as they chased the early breakaway. Dunwoody (106) abandoned at the 90km mark after a long spell on the front, leaving the other three to press on. He had crashed in Mondays time trial, sliding out on a corner before recovering to 56th.Super glad to be here. We rode pretty ballsy, and I was glad we were able to ride as a team, Dunwoody said afterwards. We were productive in the race, even though were obviously not happy with the way it unfolded. I guess had we pulled it off we would have been class, but now that it didnt we dont look great but honestly we go out with our heads held high.OBrien said: Feeling pretty empty and knackered. It was always going to be a hard day and we expected it. Unfortunately we just didnt have it in the end, just ran out of gas to be honest. Its been a super enjoyable experience and its nice to be here with such a good bunch of lads.
