A new website promoting Irelands greenways mostly rural shared walking and cycling routes has been launched by the Department of Transport.Greenways.gov.ie includes route information and maps for most of Irelands longer greenways.The website includes details such as the distance, elevation, estimated travel times, the surface finish of the greenways, and the facilities available along different parts of routes, including public transport access, park and ride and toilets.As well as the online map, each route also has a PDF map and a GPX track which can be loaded into mapping apps.While there are warnings about surfacings, there are no warnings about restrictive barriers, which exclude many users and make it harder for loaded touring cyclists.Current inaccuraciesThe online mapping for the South Kerry Greenway on the website accurately shows how only some sections are built. But then confusingly uses solid green lines for sections of greenways which are not yet finished, including the Dublin 15 section of the Royal Canal Greenway and the Dublin City section of the Grand Canal Greenway.On the Grand Canal Greenway, the map warns of sections currently closed, but on the Carlingford Lough Greenway there is no such warning for the large closure and detour into a busy main road due to the construction of the Narrow Water Bridge.The website also inaccurately shows a mud surface on sections of the Royal Canal towpath in Dublin 15 that were recently repaved with a dust surface finish.
