Build it, and they will come cargo bikes line up for Dublin school run
Up to 25 cargo bicycles outside a school; must it be the Netherlands? No, its becoming the norm at some Dublin schools along newer, higher-quality cycle routes.Parents use cargo bikes to carry children as an alternative to cars, and businesses use them to carry goods as van replacements for some trips. Cllr Lorraine Hall, a councillor for Dn Laoghaire-Rathdown, is highlighting that a range of box bikes and long-tail cargo bikes are now pulling up outside primary schoolsin Blackrock and Dn Laoghaire near routes such as the Coastal Mobility Route (pictured). This week she said she counted 25 cargo bikes at the one school.Cargo bikes were an oddity in Dublin a decade and a half ago when IrishCycle HQ was based there, but they have now become a common sight in the city. But 25 outside the one school is a record in Ireland as far as this website knows.Cllr Hall said: Build it, and they will come. The Coastal Mobility Route and slower traffic are having a positive impact on mobility choices in Dn Laoghaire. The school in question is close to the Coastal Mobility Route, between Blackrock and Dn Laoghaire, and near other local cycle routes built by Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.Weve seen extraordinary success from the Coastal Mobility Route in Dn Laoghaire. During the week, I counted 25 cargo bikes parked outside a local school beside the route, many of them carrying two or more children, said Cllr Hall. She said: People are responding positively to slower traffic and safe, segregated cycle lanes. Build it, and they will come. One of the issues is finding space to park bikes safely at school drop-off, which is not a bad complaint to have, she said.Cllr Hall added: Families want to cycle. It helps them beat the traffic, its enjoyable, and it makes the school run much easier. When people are given safe infrastructure, they use it.
