Teenager killed as driver of vehicle flees crash site
A teenager was killed in a hit-and-run while they were using what was described as an e-bike the driver of the other vehicle, which was not described, failed to remain at the collision site. A spokesperson at the Garda Press Office said: Garda are seeking witnesses following a fatal road traffic collision that occurred in Cloonlara, on the Clare-Limerick border, on Friday, 4th September 2026.Shortly after 11pm, emergency services alerted Garda after an e-bike rider, a male in his mid-teens, was found unresponsive by the roadside on the L3050 at Cottage Cross near Cloonlara. He was pronounced deceased at the scene, the spokesperson said.Garda said that a second vehicle involved in the incident failed to remain at the scene and did not mention the driver or any actions by the driver. When contacted today (Saturday), the Garda Press Office was unable to clarify what it means by the term e-bike. Department of Transport, Citizens Information and others define e-bikes as pedal-assisted bicycles, but Garda in the past have referred to e-mopeds or e-motorcycles as e-bikes.The scene has been preserved for examination by Garda Forensic Collision Investigators and local traffic diversions are currently in place. The Coroner has been notified, and a post-mortem examination will be arranged, the spokesperson saidThey added: Garda are appealing to anyone who witnessed the incident to come forward. Road users who were in the Cloonlara area at the time and may have camera footage (including dash-cam) are asked to make it available to investigating Garda.Anyone with information or footage is urged to contact Henry Garda Station on (061) 212400, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.
