Jakob Omrzel (Bahrain Victorious) won stage 12 of the Vuelta a Espaa at Calar Alto on Thursday 3 September, riding the last 12km alone to become the youngest Slovenian to win a Grand Tour stage.At 20 years, five months and 13 days, Omrzel beats the mark Tadej Pogaar set at the 2019 Vuelta by nearly six months, and is the youngest Grand Tour stage winner of any nationality since Celestino Prieto in 1981. He took the 166.6km stage from Vera in 4:29:53, 1:56 ahead of Urko Berrade with his teammate Santiago Buitrago third at 2:13.Calar Alto, at 2,153 metres, is the highest finish of this Vuelta. Omrzel went with the days breakaway and rode clear on the upper slopes, also climbing four places to sixth overall.Nearly three minutes behind, Enric Mas distanced his rivals to extend the red jersey. He now leads Primo Rogli by 1:45, having taken half a minute from him, with Felix Gall third at 2:06 and Richard Carapaz up one to fourth. Oscar Onley crashed early in the stage and finished more than five minutes down, but keeps the young rider jersey by 30 seconds from Omrzel.Wout van Aert leads the points classification on 194 and was named most combative. Buitrago extends his mountains lead to 52 points and Decathlon CMA CGM hold the teams classification, with Bahrain Victorious climbing six places to second after their one-three on the stage.Irish RidersEddie Dunbar (Pinarello Q36.5) came home 66th at 29:17 on the hardest summit finish of the race and drops four places to 50th overall. He remains 33rd in the mountains classification on 23 points.
