Sam Bennett finished third on stage 2 of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men in Skegness on Thursday 3 September, on a day the crosswinds tore the race apart along the Lincolnshire coast.Tim Merlier (Soudal Quick-Step) won the sprint on the promenade, launching with 350 metres to go and winning by a clear margin from Olav Kooij, with Bennett (Pinarello Q36.5) third and his teammate Matteo Moschetti fourth. It is Merliers tenth win of the season.I was a bit boxed in and some other riders passed me before the corner, but there was still 350m to go and then I think some guys didnt really accelerate after the corner, Merlier said. I tried to surprise the others, and I think it worked out.A four-man break went from the flag and stayed clear for 120km of the 181.1km stage from Boston. Jnos Pelikn took both climbs, at Kirmond Road and Rothwell Hill, and Jonah Killy took the first intermediate sprint at Saltfleetby before the group was reeled in. Killy took the combativity award.The race exploded when it hit the coast at Mablethorpe, echelons forming across the road with Decathlon driving. A mechanical at the wrong moment left Filippo Ganna on the wrong side of the split and he never got back, ending his GC hopes. Matteo Trentin won the second sprint at Sutton-on-Sea, with race leader Lewis Askey third for a bonus second. Florian Vermeersch attacked inside the last 10km and built almost 30 seconds before being caught.Askey keeps the leaders jersey, now 12 seconds ahead of Tim Wellens and 19 ahead of Trentin, and holds the points classification by 15. Michal Schuran keeps the mountains lead and Elliot Rowe the young rider jersey.Irish RidersBennetts third place is the standout, and he was one of the riders who made the decisive split at Mablethorpe. He climbs 15 places to 76th overall. Ryan Mullen and Conn Mc Dunphy came home together in 53rd and 58th at 1:43, with Ronan OConnor and Cian Keogh in a later group at 15:39.
