Conn Mc Dunphy was the leading Irish rider on the opening stage of the Lloyds Tour of Britain Men in Lincoln on Wednesday 2 September, finishing 54th as Lewis Askey won on home roads at the top of Michaelgate.Askey (NSN Cycling Team) covered the 182.5km around Lincolnshire in 4:02:44, countering a late attack from Florian Vermeersch on the final ascent of the 11.3% climb to win by two seconds from Filippo Ganna, with Tim Wellens third on the same time. Jasper Stuyven, Daan Hoole and Matteo Trentin followed at nine seconds.Ive been pretty close to victory quite a few times this year, Askey said. To cross the line first with my hands in the air, thats why I ride my bike. I came here with an eye on the GC in the first place I knew this stage would decide the GC. I think others didnt expect there to be such big time gaps.A six-man break went early and included Adam Lewis (APS Pro Cycling by Team Cadence Cyclery), who took the combativity award after being among the last caught with 41km remaining. Michal Schuran (Team United Shipping) takes the mountains jersey on 13 points, and Elliot Rowe (Great Britain) is the leading young rider after eighth on the stage.Askey leads the general classification by nine seconds from Ganna and 11 from Wellens, and heads the points classification on 35.Irish RidersMc Dunphy came home 54th at 3:30, the best of the five Irish riders, with Ryan Mullen 69th at 4:16 in the winners team and Sam Bennett 91st at 6:08.
